Biden: Why Not Me?

We’re at that silly stage of the 2016 presidential cycle where media folk are challenging potential candidates to rule themselves in or out. It’s interesting that it’s considered news today that the sitting Vice President of the United States ruled himself in until some sort of self-imposed failsafe point in the summer of 2015.
It’s pretty evident from early polling that barring unforeseen developments Biden (like ever other “mentioned” candidate) is toast if Hillary Clinton runs. One of the few recent polls (from Quinnipiac last May) rating the field in HRC’s absence shows Biden with 45%, 30 points more than any other named rival. A Clinton-less race, of course, would attract a larger field, not to mention the kind of visibility for people not named Joe, that would likely reduce his lead.
But what the hell, why should he rule himself out? Observers tend to forget he built a consequential Iowa organization way back in 1987 before the “plagiarism” scandal drove him from the race. He built another one going into 2008 before being crushed by the Big Three of Obama, Edwards and Clinton. He knows what to do when he is confronted with a bale of hay at the Iowa State Fair (climb up on it and bloviate!). And there’s really no telling who he would be fighting for the nomination; the 2012 Republican nomination contest shows it’s possible to beat a cast of clowns and ideologues with little more than high name ID and big sacks of cash.
I personally think HRC is going to run and Biden won’t, but there’s no reason to push old Joe out until a lot more shoes drop. And he’s certainly earned the right to nourish his presidential fantasies until he really just can’t.

Looking toward the 2016 presidential race, Paul began hammering the Clintons several weeks ago, saying that Hillary Clinton was unqualified to defend women’s rights because her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had cheated on her with an intern in the White House.
In one interview, Paul went as far as to accuse the former president of “violence” against women. And more recently, the Republican presidential hopeful declared that Bill Clinton should “return any contributions that Bill Clinton’s either raising for people or giving to people.”
“This is smart politics it seems to me,” Crowley told Stoddard on Sunday. “Here’s Rand Paul kind of expanding what his dad had, he’s got the libertarian side of him: He’ll take on drones, he’ll take on privacy, he’ll do that. Then, he’s got the social conservative side of him. I think that’s where this comes in.”
“He’s actually more in tune with the needs and the demographic liabilities Republican Party than most wannabe 2016 contenders,” Stoddard asserted. “He’s actually speaking right now to the Wall Street managerial wing of the party. It’s very worried that Chris Christie collapsed.”
“And what it’s saying is, ‘I have the guts to take on the Clintons, I think we need to, I know we don’t have a candidate right now,'” she continued. “So in the middle of this panic, he’s saying, ‘I can do this. And that actually is going to bring him more ears.”
George Will Complains That Obamacare, Like Social Security, is a Disincentive to Work

Fox’s George Will doubles down on the latest GOP talking point, that having access to health care is going to turn Americans into a bunch of lazy moochers that don’t want to work.
During the panel segment immediately following Sen. Roy Blunt suggesting that Obamacare is making Americans lazy, Fox News Sunday regular George Will decided to double down on Blunt’s remarks, and to attack progressivism as a whole.
Will probably didn’t realize it, but he just inadvertently turned himself into a punchline in Jon Stewart’s latest rant, where he was bashing the pundits on Bullsh*t Mountain for their lies about the CBO. I’m not sure who Will is trying to appeal to here, but I don’t think the slogan, “We’re Republicans and we want you to work until you drop dead” is a winning message for them.
WALLACE: So, this sounds like a GEICO commercial, George. But is giving people a cheaper way to get health insurance without working so much — is that a good thing or a bad thing?
GEORGE WILL: It’s a bad thing but it’s an intended thing. No one should be surprised about this. Everything big government does has big consequences. When it has taxes, it changes the incentive structure for citizens. When it has payments which are 67 percent of the federal budget, it changes the incentive structure.
People forget Social Security was advocated, Chris, in the 1930s, as a way of getting people to quit working, because they thought we were confined to a permanent scarcity of jobs in this country. Second, it is the point of progressivism, is to put in front of the American people an increasingly rich menu of temptation to dependency on government. In order to change social norms and eventually national character, the president said, “I want to fundamentally change America”, and these disincentives to work are part of it.

In a new twist on attacking Obamacare by Republicans, Senator Roy Blunt suggested that Obamacare is incentivizing laziness.
Republicans/conservatives have been attacking Obamacare from all sides with little respect for the truth, such as the recently discredited claim that Obamacare will kill jobs. Oh, whatever will Republicans do now? I know, just make up a new insane piece of sh*t reason why Obamacare most be stopped. You know, something that’s tied into the bible and the seven deadly sins. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Blunt: I think any law you pass that discourages people from working can’t be a good idea. Why would we wanna do that? Why would we think that’s a good thing? How does that allow people to prepare for the time when they don’t work?
Obviously this is a load of crap, but that never stops Republicans from spreading it on thick. People always need to work, period. Are they going to sit home and not eat and not clothe their kids because of Obamacare? Chalk up job choice as yet another item that Republicans hate the working class to have.

Could the ACA help the millions of Americans drowning in debt? A new study of Massachusetts health care reform offers some clues.

Everyone knows that expanding health care coverage will have a positive impact on health and well-being. But what about its effect on household debt? Medical debt is a terrible problem that is more or less unique to the United States. In fact, medical debt is so prevalent that it is the main cause of personal bankruptcy in this country. Studies show that medical debt has caused many Americans to go without food and heat and even forego medical treatment.
One of the most important reasons for passing the ACA was to rein in the medical debt epidemic. But will the ACA really succeed in reducing medical debt? An interesting new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago offers some clues. The study examined the impact of Massachusetts’ 2006 health care reform on household finances. As the researchers note, the Massachusetts reform bears strong parallels to the ACA:

The Chicago Fed study analyzes data from a credit reporting agency from before and after the reform across different counties and age groups in Massachusetts. While researchers didn’t look at medical debt as such, they did examine a variety of other household financial outcomes. Here’s what they discovered:
We found that the Massachusetts reform improved fi nancial outcomes across many dimensions: it improved credit scores, reduced delinquencies, lowered the fraction of debt past due, and reduced the incidence of personal bankruptcy. We found a particularly pronounced reduction in large delinquencies of over $5,000, but observe almost no eff ect on delinquencies of smaller amounts. We also fou nd suggestive evidence that the reform reduced third-party collections and total debt.
Schumer: Delay Date Immigration Overhaul Would Take Effect

A key Democratic senator proposed to delay implementation of a proposed new law until after President Barack Obama leaves office.
The suggestion floated by Sen. Charles Schumer, D- N.Y., was an attempt to mollify Republican concerns about Obama not enforcing the law.
“Let’s enact the law this year, but simply not let it actually start ‘til 2017 after President Obama’s term is over,” he said on NBC’s Meet the Press.
Of course, we can’t have PBO getting credit for any reformation on immigration! And who can’t see that Schumer is setting the stage for Hillary to accept credit for it, should she get elected president. Just like GLADD giving Bubba an award for gay rights. What has this man done for gay rights? DOMA & DADT.
Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.
Thanks to Abstrakt Goldsmith for this nugget of history that most of us never learned in school.
SG2, I hunted down the Harlem Boys Choir version of “Change” on CD last week and the only recordng seems to be the 17th track on an album by Mase. There was no MP3 version on Amazon. Does make me wonder who is the lead vocalist, my gosh, what a voice.

Election supervisors and the League of Women Voters have a new complaint with Gov. Rick Scott and the Legislature over early voting.
After years of complaints by supervisors who struggled with historically long lines at the polls in 2012, lawmakers last year expanded the list of early voting sites to include fairgronds, civic centers, courthouses, county commission buildings, stadiums, convention centers and government-owned community centers.
But when the city of Gainesville — which is heavily Democratic — asked if it could use the University of Florida student union for early voting in next month’s municipal elections, the state said no.
“The Reitz Union is a structure designed for, and affiliated with, a specific educational institution,” says an advisory opinion from Maria Matthews, director of the state Division of Elections, which is run by a Scott appointee, Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “The terms ‘convention center’ and ‘government-owned community center’ cannot be construed so broadly as to include the Reitz Union.”
The opinion noted that the 2013 Legislature rejected an amendment that would have further expanded the definition of early voting sites to include “educational facilities.”
“I’m very upset about this,” said Polk County Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards, president of a statewide supervisors’ group. “I just can’t understand why they feel the need to be so restrictive about where people are allowed to vote … This is strategic. They’re worried about young people voting.”
The union, named for former UF President J. Wayne Reitz, is used as a regular voting precinct in county, state and national elections. About 50,000 students attend UF, and the city said the request to use the Reitz Union for early voting came from a group of students.
Republican Party wing creates 18 fake websites for Democrats

If you support Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick’s bid for reelection, stay away from annkirkpatrick.com. The site might greet visitors with a welcoming photo of the Arizona congresswoman and a screaming “Kirkpatrick for Congress” logo, but that design belies its true agenda.
Funded and created by the Republican Party’s congressional campaign wing, the site’s true aim is in the fine print: to defeat Kirkpatrick, described as “a huge embarrassment to Arizona.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee bought up hundreds of URLs ahead of the 2014 election cycle and has created nearly 20 websites appearing to support Democratic candidates in all but the small print, a spokesman for the campaign confirmed Thursday.
The websites include donation forms that accept credit cards and encourage viewers to contribute up to $500, but instead of money going to the Democratic candidates, it goes to the NRCC.
And they gave this woman a non-White child to adopt?

A contract is generally a written agreement, often concerning business, tenancy, or employment that is intended to be enforceable by law and because it is an agreement it is safe to conclude that two sides negotiated the contract’s conditions which are why they are enforceable by law. Around the nation public sector employees are seeing their defined retirement benefits from protected pension funds being slashed because Republicans claim deficits are unsustainable and that states and the federal government are broke. And yet the deficits are not enough to stop corporate tax subsidies that exceed the cost of funding retirement benefits.
In a new analysis from taxpayer watchdog group Good Jobs First, 10 states claimed they were drowning in budget deficits to justify Draconian retiree benefit cuts, but in those 10 states “the total annual cost of corporate subsidies, tax breaks and loopholes exceeds the total current annual pension costs.” The practice is part of a tactic an American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) sister organization funded by the Kochs, the State Policy Network (SPN), is ramping up to eliminate public sector pensions on a nationwide scale. The idea that pension and retirement funds are fair game for the wealthy is a Koch brother and Wall Street philosophy that Republicans in states are willingly implementing with impunity because they utter the term “deficit.”
For example, in Louisiana Republicans claimed the state’s annual pension contributions of $348 million is unaffordable and used the alleged shortfall to call for cuts to public employees’ negotiated retirement incomes. However, while claiming they are broke the same Republicans support giving subsidies, loopholes, and tax breaks to corporations at five times the cost of the state’s obligation to retirees every year. In Illinois, Governor Pat Quinn, a Democrat, just signed legislation to cut state workers’ pensions even though the state spends $500 million more each year on corporate subsidies than it cost to fund its pension system. in Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to propose similar cuts to municipal employees’ retirement benefits and cited a budget shortfall to close schools, but supports $300 million in spending on corporate subsidies, including a massive gift to a private university to construct a new basketball arena.

State blocks use of UF student union as early voting center

Election supervisors and the League of Women Voters have a new complaint with Gov. Rick Scott and the Legislature over early voting.
After years of complaints by supervisors who struggled with historically long lines at the polls in 2012, lawmakers last year expanded the list of early voting sites to include fairgronds, civic centers, courthouses, county commission buildings, stadiums, convention centers and government-owned community centers.
But when the city of Gainesville — which is heavily Democratic — asked if it could use the University of Florida student union for early voting in next month’s municipal elections, the state said no.
“The Reitz Union is a structure designed for, and affiliated with, a specific educational institution,” says an advisory opinion from Maria Matthews, director of the state Division of Elections, which is run by a Scott appointee, Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “The terms ‘convention center’ and ‘government-owned community center’ cannot be construed so broadly as to include the Reitz Union.”
The opinion noted that the 2013 Legislature rejected an amendment that would have further expanded the definition of early voting sites to include “educational facilities.”
“I’m very upset about this,” said Polk County Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards, president of a statewide supervisors’ group. “I just can’t understand why they feel the need to be so restrictive about where people are allowed to vote … This is strategic. They’re worried about young people voting.”
The union, named for former UF President J. Wayne Reitz, is used as a regular voting precinct in county, state and national elections. About 50,000 students attend UF, and the city said the request to use the Reitz Union for early voting came from a group of students.

Republican Party wing creates 18 fake websites for Democrats

If you support Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick’s bid for reelection, stay away from annkirkpatrick.com. The site might greet visitors with a welcoming photo of the Arizona congresswoman and a screaming “Kirkpatrick for Congress” logo, but that design belies its true agenda.
Funded and created by the Republican Party’s congressional campaign wing, the site’s true aim is in the fine print: to defeat Kirkpatrick, described as “a huge embarrassment to Arizona.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee bought up hundreds of URLs ahead of the 2014 election cycle and has created nearly 20 websites appearing to support Democratic candidates in all but the small print, a spokesman for the campaign confirmed Thursday.
The websites include donation forms that accept credit cards and encourage viewers to contribute up to $500, but instead of money going to the Democratic candidates, it goes to the NRCC.

ALEC Spearheads Effort To Steal From Employees to Give to Corporations

A contract is generally a written agreement, often concerning business, tenancy, or employment that is intended to be enforceable by law and because it is an agreement it is safe to conclude that two sides negotiated the contract’s conditions which are why they are enforceable by law. Around the nation public sector employees are seeing their defined retirement benefits from protected pension funds being slashed because Republicans claim deficits are unsustainable and that states and the federal government are broke. And yet the deficits are not enough to stop corporate tax subsidies that exceed the cost of funding retirement benefits.
In a new analysis from taxpayer watchdog group Good Jobs First, 10 states claimed they were drowning in budget deficits to justify Draconian retiree benefit cuts, but in those 10 states “the total annual cost of corporate subsidies, tax breaks and loopholes exceeds the total current annual pension costs.” The practice is part of a tactic an American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) sister organization funded by the Kochs, the State Policy Network (SPN), is ramping up to eliminate public sector pensions on a nationwide scale. The idea that pension and retirement funds are fair game for the wealthy is a Koch brother and Wall Street philosophy that Republicans in states are willingly implementing with impunity because they utter the term “deficit.”
For example, in Louisiana Republicans claimed the state’s annual pension contributions of $348 million is unaffordable and used the alleged shortfall to call for cuts to public employees’ negotiated retirement incomes. However, while claiming they are broke the same Republicans support giving subsidies, loopholes, and tax breaks to corporations at five times the cost of the state’s obligation to retirees every year. In Illinois, Governor Pat Quinn, a Democrat, just signed legislation to cut state workers’ pensions even though the state spends $500 million more each year on corporate subsidies than it cost to fund its pension system. in Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to propose similar cuts to municipal employees’ retirement benefits and cited a budget shortfall to close schools, but supports $300 million in spending on corporate subsidies, including a massive gift to a private university to construct a new basketball arena.
