Friday Open Thread |Buffalo Springfield | For What It’s Worth

buffalo springfieldBuffalo Springfield was an American-Canadian rock band known for both its music and as a springboard for the careers of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay. Among the first wave of American bands to become popular in the wake of the British invasion, the group combined rock, folk, and country music into a sound all its own. Its million-selling song “For What It’s Worth” became a political anthem for the turbulent late 1960s.

Formed in April 1966, Buffalo Springfield was plagued by infighting, drug-related arrests, and line-up changes that led to the group’s disbanding after just two years. Three albums were released under its name, but many demos, studio outtakes, and live recordings remained and were issued in the decades that followed.

Despite the band’s short tenure and limited output it was one of the most influential of its era, earning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognition and spawning fellow Hall honorees Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, as well as popular acts Poco and Loggins and Messina.

Obama warns Russia ‘there will be costs’ for any military intervention in Ukraine

In unscheduled remarks at the White House Friday afternoon, President Obama said the United States is “deeply concerned” about military movements by the Russian federation inside Ukraine, and warned that “there will be costs for any military intervention.” He added that “any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty… would be deeply destabilizing.”

ThinkProgress: Federal Government Expands Access To Healthy Food For Low-Income Moms And Babies

A government program that gives federal food assistance to an estimated 9 million women and children is getting revamped for the first time in more than three decades. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children — more commonly known as WIC — will now provide low-income Americans with more options for culturally specific food, as well as increase funding for some healthy options.

WIC is a nutritional assistance program intended to help women and their babies afford healthy food. It diverges from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, because it’s specifically targeted at improving healthy pregnancies and birth outcomes. This year, the program marked its 40th anniversary.

Molly Redden: This Program Is Helping Crush Childhood Obesity. Guess What Republicans Want To Do To It

Researchers are still exploring what factors caused the early childhood obesity rate to plummet43 percent over the last decade. But a group of health experts at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill think that they have found at least part of the answer: changes to the federally funded Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that gave poor mothers the means to purchase more fresh produce for their children.

This program, which is better known as WIC, provides billions of dollars per year in nutritious food vouchers for low-income pregnant women, breast-feeding women, and children younger than five. WIC was created in the 1970s, but it wasn’t until 2009 that it provided mothers with vouchers for fruits and vegetables. That’s the change that the North Carolina researchers think may have contributed to the stunning decline in obesity rates. Republicans looking to slash federal spending have targeted WIC in recent years. In March 2012, for example, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives tried to cut $243 million from WIC.

Eugene Robinson: My Brother’s Keeper: A Helping Hand For Young Men Of Color

“My Brother’s Keeper” has a much nicer ring than “stop and frisk.” It also promises to be a more effective, less self-defeating way to address the interlocking social and economic crises afflicting young men of color. I’ll go out on a limb and predict that President Obama gets some heat for launching a program whose benefits are aimed solely at African American and Hispanic men and boys.

The nation’s first black president gets slammed by critics who accuse him of “playing the race card” every time he acknowledges that race and racism still play a role in determining opportunities and outcomes. But obviously they do. My Brother’s Keeper, which Obama announced Thursday, is the kind of targeted public-private initiative that might actually do some good, even without tons of new federal money thrown in.

The Vets’ Best Friend is a Socialist
    by BooMan
Fri Feb 28th, 2014 at 11:32:35 AM EST

I knew it would happen. I knew that when Sen. Bernie Sanders took possession of the Senate Veteran’s Affairs Committee gavel, that he would soon ingratiate himself with millions of our country’s retired soldiers. I knew he would bring forth worthy legislation, and I wondered what the cultural impact would be once it became clear that a Vermont Socialist was the best advocate that veteran’s have on Capitol Hill. Sen. Sanders has probably opposed virtually every mission that our soldiers have been sent on over the last sixty years (although he did approve using military force in Afghanistan). On the covert side, at least, many of those missions have been aimed at crushing socialism. In our country, where straightforward Democrats like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are routinely denounced as communists, Sen. Sanders must strike a lot of veterans as a radical. But he’s not among the radicals who just screwed over our vets.
Yesterday, all but two Senate Republicans voted against a motion to take up Sander’s bill. They didn’t do it, for the most part, because they opposed the bill, but because they wanted to slap sanctions on Iran. The administration is in delicate talks with the Iranian government and does not want Congress to make aggressive moves that could undermine their negotiations and potentially lead to an unnecessary war. Even AIPAC has urged Congress to show restraint.

America’s main pro-Israel lobby came out against an immediate vote on Iran sanctions Thursday, just hours after 42 Republican senators demanded a vote.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) issued its statement after the bill’s author, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), took to the Senate floor and obliquely criticized the GOP push.

“We agree with the Chairman that stopping the Iranian nuclear program should rest on bipartisan support,” AIPAC said in an emailed statement, “and that there should not be a vote at this time on the measure.”

An AIPAC official confirmed the email’s validity and said the organization has never pushed for an immediate vote.

“We have not and are not calling for [an] immediate vote,” the official told The Hill.

Despite this, the Republicans demanded an immediate vote, and they used the veteran’s bill as a hostage

  12. Obama reversed Tom Delay’s ban on Houston Light Rail

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/02/27/1280983/-Obama-reversed-Tom-Delay-s-ban-on-Houston-Light-Rail#

In 2003, voters in the Harris County Metropolitan Transit Authority’s (HCMTA) service area approved a referendum on the expansion of light rail. Tom Delay intervened, and overrode the voters’ choice. Light rail expansion in Houston was blocked by the George W Bush administration for five years. Suddenly, in 2009, the ban was lifted by the President’s new FTA. Every year, the FTA has sent the HCMTA at least $150 million for light rail expansion. On December 20, 2013, the first new line, Northline-Houston Community College, went into service. This year, two more light rail lines will open.

The suburbanites are complaining because HCMTA is concentrating on the democratic-majority Houston center city. They want commuter light rail to their outlying areas but keep electing republicans who are adamantly opposed to rail expansion. Somehow Houston suburbanites have not made the connection between whom they vote for and what kind of transportation they get.

HCMTA recently announced that additional cars have been added to Northline (named after a 1950’s shopping mall) because passenger boardings have exceeded forecasts. HCMTA removes motor vehicle lanes and allocates them to rail. Unlike other new light rail systems, HCMTA is operating the lines as limited-stop streetcars, which is unique in the modern US. Northline has cut the travel time in half from the 15 Fulton Bus which it replaced. I talked to many passengers, and every person I talked to is thrilled about the huge improvement in service. The new line runs every 12 minutes, seven days a week. I recently took a Sunday photographic stroll on the line and uploaded the video to You Tube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrKIxqdBgEY

None of this much-needed expansion would have been possible without President Obama. Thanks to federal help, and the backing of Democratic Mayor Annise Parker, these lines are going in fast. On the Northline, it took less that 3 years from the original groundbreaking to the start of service. Houston, which was the least-likely city to embark on electric rail transit 15 years ago, has an aggressive rail transit program underway. Elections do make a difference.

    GET.IT.DONE. De Blaiso!

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration has blocked three charter schools from using space inside public school buildings, reversing a decision from his predecessor and making good on a campaign promise to rein in the influence of private education providers.

De Blasio, a Democrat, accused former Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration of trying to “rush” the co-location decisions to give free space in city-owned buildings to the charter schools in the final days before leaving office last year.

Bloomberg was a strong proponent of the taxpayer-funded but privately run charter schools, which grew from 17 to 183 during his time in office, while de Blasio has pledged to charge rent to “well-resourced” charter schools and has called for a moratorium on allowing new charters to share buildings with traditional schools.

“We were handed a series of last-minute moves by the Bloomberg administration approving a number of co-locations,” de Blasio said Thursday. “We knew that if they could get away it, they would.”

New Jersey lawmaker: Chris Christie ‘needs to think about resigning’

Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, a 12th District congressional candidate and a member of the committee investigating the George Washington Bridge scandal, tonight called on the governor to consider resigning over his staff’s role in the controversy.

Watson Coleman was discussing newly released text messages between former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official David Wildstein and Bridget Kelly, former deputy chief of staff to Gov. Chris Christie, in which the pair disparage a rabbi and jokingly discuss creating traffic problems outside his house.

“And this really is what they’re all about, transactional deals, dismissiveness, remarks that are totally, totally unacceptable in a civilized society,” Watson Coleman said during an appearance on MSNBC. “And you know what? The governor needs to think about resigning, and he needs to take all his friends with him because this is sickening.”

America plays its role in a changing world right
By Fareed Zakaria, Published: February 27 E-mail the writer

As America navigates a changing world, the people who seem to be having the greatest difficulty with the adjustment are the country’s pundits. Over the past few weeks, a new conventional wisdom has congealed on the op-ed pages: The United States is in retreat, and this is having terrible consequences around the world.

This week, The Post’s Richard Cohen presented the usual parade of horrible things happening around the world — chiefly Syria — for which President Obama is to blame, and he added a few new ones for good measure, such as Scotland’s and Catalonia’s possible moves toward secession. In the face of all these challenges, Cohen asserted, Obama refuses to be the world’s policeman or even its “hall monitor.” Yes, if only the president would blow a whistle, the Scots and Catalans would end their centuries-old quest for independence!
