Aretha Franklin celebrates 72nd birthday with Denzel Washington

NEW YORK (AP) — The guys love Aretha Franklin: Denzel Washington helped the Queen of Soul celebrate her 72nd birthday in style, and Andre 3000 and Babyface are working on new music for the icon.
Franklin held an exclusive and small party Saturday in New York City for her birthday, which is on Tuesday. Washington entered the Ritz-Carlton Hotel quietly, though the crowd got excited after realizing it was the Oscar winner under a baseball cap.
Franklin thanked the actor for attending. Just hours earlier, she saw him onstage in the Broadway play, “A Raisin In the Sun.”
Her longtime musical collaborator, Clive Davis, also attended.

Lifetime Secret Service Protection Restored for Presidents Bush and Obama
As a cost savings, Congress had ended lifetime security details for former presidents, cutting off Secret Service protection 10 years after a president leaves office. But in the post-9/11 world Congress decided that former chief executives may still be vulnerable and need protection.
President Obama has now signed the repeal. HR. 6620, the “Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012,” also gives Secret Service protection to former First Ladies and guarantees agents will continue to shadow children of former Presidents until they become 16 years of age.

Mitt Romney: My power to ‘see the future’ could have stopped Russia’s invasion

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Sunday suggested that he had a power to “see the future,” and could have stopped Russia from invading Crimea if he had been elected in 2012.
“The president’s naïveté with regards to Russia, and his faulty judgement about Russia’s intentions and objectives has led to a number of foreign policy challenges that we face,” Romney opined to CBS host Bob Schieffer on Sunday’s edition of Face the Nation. “And unfortunately not having anticipated Russia’s intentions, the president wasn’t able to shape the kinds of events that may have been able to prevent the kinds of circumstances that you’re seeing in the Ukraine, as well as the things that you’re seeing in Syria.”
“I think effective leaders typically are able to see the future to a certain degree, and are able to take actions to shape it in some way,” he added. “And that’s, of course, what this president has failed to do. And as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton as well.”

Family of missing girl Relisha Rudd, 8, makes plea for her safe return

The mother of a missing 8-year-old is pleading for the return of her daughter, who police believe was taken by a janitor at the homeless shelter where the girl’s family resides.
Shamika Young told FOX 5 DC on Friday that she is afraid for the safety of her missing daughter, Relisha Rudd, after police obtained an arrest warrant for the shelter’s janitor, 51-year-old Khalil Tatum, charging him with the murder of his wife, Andrea Tatum.
Andrea Tatum’s body was found Thursday in a Red Roof Inn in Oxon Hill, Md., one day after Relisha was reported missing. The discovery came as police also found the white truck connected to the case and believed to belong to Khalil Tatum, according to the Washington Post.
Andrea Tatum’s body reportedly showed signs of trauma, but police did not reveal how she died.
According to The Post, police said that Relisha’s family allowed her to be cared for by Khalil Tatum, whom a relative said the family had come to know during the 18 months they resided at the shelter.

Should College Athletes Be Paid By The NCAA To Play?
As sports fans sit and curse the likes of Mercer or Dayton for busting their March Madness brackets, the debate on whether or not colleges should pay student athletes is beginning to heat up.
This week, the NCAA‘s top five conferences were named as defendants in an antitrust lawsuit by a number of college basketball and football players. This has brought a long time debate onto the national stage. So much so, that two of the major Sunday morning news programs, NBC‘s “Meet The Press” and ABC‘s “This Week,“ both featured a segment on the possibility of student athletes unionizing. This has been something that has been danced around for a number of years, but seems to be picking up steam as students become increasingly aware of the revenue their efforts are bringing in.

It has been a recurring experience during my trips to Ghana and Nigeria in the past few years: seeing Africans do far more for themselves than the mainstream narrative about Africa would have you believe. More important, the methods used by local merchants—and even laymen who have to be ready at a moment’s notice to engineer solutions to everyday problems—are not only creative and innovative, but also sometimes a bit more efficient than some methods stateside.
Take the makeshift water system I saw operating in a hair salon a few blocks from my mother’s house in Accra, the Ghanaian capital. It was an arrangement consisting of tubes, a heating tank and several dispensers from which water flowed—all to make use of the limited water supply and nonexistent piping system. The entire apparatus worked amazingly well at getting the shampoo out of a patron’s hair. My mother and the salon owner told to me that the system conserved water better than some modern methods, a feat that Americans have been trying to accomplish for years.
Nigerian-American journalist Dayo Olopade explores this idea more thoroughly in her new book The Bright Continent: Breaking Rules and Making Change in Modern Africa.

University of Alabama Student Leaders Block Greek Integration Bill

Six months after the campus newspaper reported on apparent racial discrimination in the University of Alabama pledging system, the student government on Thursday failed to pass a bill to support full integration of the school’s system of Greek fraternities and sororities, according to AL.com.
The Senate of the Student Government Association (SGA) sent the measure to committee, where it is likely to die with the end of the 2013-14 Senate session, the report says.
In September, university President Judy Bonner released a video statement announcing plans to diversify the school’s sororities after The Crimson White, the campus’s student news organization, published a piece detailing how the daughter of a state senator and granddaughter of a trustee—a student with high grades—was denied a chance to pledge 16 of the primarily white sororities on campus. The report painted a picture of a staunchly segregated campus Greek system heavily influenced by alumni.
Some members of the student Senate subsequently drafted a resolution to promulgate the integration of the university’s entire Greek system. But Cole Adams, speaker of the Senate, told AL.com: “Many senators felt the resolution was not ready to be debated in its current form and were loath to suspend the rules on a resolution that seemed to be thrown together at the last minute without thought to the implications of its language or without gathering evidence to support said language.”

There are families diverse in sexual orientation, spirituality and even ethnicity. And black life is not all “struggle.” A Hampton University conference scrutinizes contemporary portrayals of African Americans.

In the decades since 1978, when Hampton University held its first conference dedicated to unpacking the issues facing black families, plenty of aspects of American life have changed for people of all races. At the 36th annual event, held this week on the campus of the Virginia HBCU, participants took a critical look at the media’s ability to stay up to speed when it comes to portrayals of contemporary African Americans.
“Essentially Black: Media and the Modern Family,” hosted by the school’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and chaired by its dean, Brett Pulley, featured input over three days of discussions from speakers including Black Entertainment Television co-founder Sheila Johnson, CBS News’ Michelle Miller, ESPN’s Chris Broussard and ABC News Chief National Correspondent Byron Pitts. It also included a focus on what Pulley called “the evolving media portrayal and images of black families.”

A related forum titled “50 Shades of Black” invited the audience to join media professionals in “exploring evolving portrayals and images of modern black families across the burgeoning universe of digital and traditional media.”
Overall, said panelist Broussard, an ESPN sports analyst and ESPN.com columnist, the media often “misses the nuance of black life,” noting, “We’re not monolithic. We’ve got many different types of families and different types of people.”
For example, he said, “Black men get a bad rap, but I’ve always been around black men who are happily married and taking care of their children. You don’t see a lot of those types of black men on television or in the media.”
Attendees linked those negative images on-screen and in print to real-life—and potentially deadly—consequences, blaming stereotypes about black men in particular for the deaths of African-American teenagers Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, who many believed were killed because their race and gender alone caused white men to deem them threatening.

Black Youths Attending Princeton Conference Pulled Over by Police, Then This Happened

Exchanges between black youths and the police don’t always have to end in violence.
What began as an unfortunate incident of alleged police profiling in Princeton, N.J., ended with a public-forum discussion with the officer who did the profiling.
According to one member of the Black Youth Project 100, or BYP100, a youth-centered black activist group, the police pulled over a car carrying members who were leaving a gathering on Princeton University’s campus on Saturday, March 8. The black officer cited a broken taillight, but upon investigation the vehicle was found to be intact.
The unidentified officer let the group go after asking them where they were headed and saying that he would “beat them there,” Fresco Steez, one of the members present at the incident, told The Root. It was when the members arrived at the Nassau Hotel and actually saw the officer pulled up there waiting for them that the discussion was triggered.
The group approached him, questioning the motive for his actions. The officer insisted that he wasn’t trying to criminalize the black youths and said that his feelings were hurt at the accusation. But then the officer offered the young people free parking as an apology, which got a conversation started.
The video below shows about half a dozen young black people huddled around the police car, talking to the black officer about why his actions had hurt them.
“You guys have a responsibility to protect and serve,” 24-year-old Devin Darrington-Ward can be heard telling the officer. “As black youth we don’t feel like we get that level of protection; we don’t get that benefit of the doubt … like regular white students running around Princeton campus [do].”

In November 2005 the Cartoon Network debuted The Boondocks during its late-night Adult Swim programming and gave us a glimpse into the fictitious Freeman family, who had just moved from the South Side of Chicago to the mostly white, made-up suburb of Woodcrest. In the premiere, viewers heard 10-year-old Huey Freeman proclaim that “Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the devil and the government is lying about 9/11.”
They got to see the penis of Robert Jebediah Freeman—aka Granddad—during an in-home, butt-naked infomercial workout, and they were treated to a stirring rendition of Uncle Ruckus’ “Don’t Trust Those New Niggers Over There!”
The show was edgy and racy and all the adjectives that can describe supremely well-done black satire. And then, after only three seasons and 45 episodes, it was gone. Fans took to the Internet wondering if the controversial cartoon had been canceled. There was speculation about the creator Aaron McGruder’s schedule and how long it took to craft each episode. There was speculation about the liberal use of the word “nigger,” and Tyler Perry’s alleged anger over his depiction in the “Pause” episode in season 3, as reasons for its sudden disappearance.
There had been no activity on the official Boondocks Facebook page since last year after a failed attempt at a Kickstarter campaign to fund a movie centered on Uncle Ruckus.

Chicago Police Search for Mom After ‘Precious Baby Girl’ Found Abandoned

Chicago police are searching for the mother of a baby found abandoned in the lobby of a South Side apartment building, NBC Chicago reports.
Thomas Freeman told police he found the child wrapped in a purple blanket about 11:30 p.m. Friday at the building in the 8200 block of South Justine Street. The child was in good condition and taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, police said.
Freeman said he made the discovery after a young woman, whom he now believes to be the baby’s mother, approached him and asked to use his cellphone. She then told him it appeared that someone had left a baby in the hallway of a nearby apartment building.
Freeman said he immediately set out to determine if the woman was telling the truth.
“When I looked in there that’s when I realized there was something laying in there. It was a little baby, a precious baby girl,” he told the news station.
He said he and his girlfriend, Arleasia Lee, then called police and went inside to check on the young girl, who was left with a bag of diapers and a sippy cup and was lying next to a gas can.
“I was like, please don’t let it be hurt or anything,” Lee told NBC.

Paul Ryan Gets An Earful From Constituent Who Will Save Hundreds Under Obamacare

RACINE, Wisconsin — Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) has been one of the primary architects of the GOP’s ongoing crusade to repeal and replace Obamacare. Most recently, the Budget Chairman has indicated that Republicans will attempt to pass individual reforms to roll back the health law’s provisions piece by piece.
But not all of Ryan’s constituents agree with his position. On Wednesday, the Republican congressman was confronted by one such voter at a town hall in southeast Wisconsin.
“ACA subsidies are a good thing,” Michael Martincic, 64, of Oak Creek told Ryan, criticizing his Party’s repeated attempts to get rid of the health reform law.
Martincic works as a roofer and is currently paying $700 for his health insurance through his union. However, upon browsing Healthcare.gov — “it was so easy to get on the site; the whole thing only took 15 minutes,” Martincic told ThinkProgress afterward — he found that he qualified for subsidies and could be paying as little as $200 for coverage.
Martincic also told Ryan about others who had been helped by Obamacare as well, including a friend with leukemia whose out-of-pocket expenses had been cut in half. At several points, the crowd clapped and cheered for him.

Sandra Chereb: Nevada Sees Surge In Medicaid Enrollments
Nevada Medicaid enrollments under federal health care reform have surpassed initial projections and are on pace to reach 500,000 by summer, a mark initially not expected to be reached until the end of the 2015 fiscal year, a state official said. Mike Willden, director of the Department of Health and Human Services, said his agency has a backlog of 60,000 pending Medicaid applications, and he may need to speed up hiring to keep up with the demand. “We’ve doubled capacity. We really need to triple capacity,” Willden told the Board of Examiners on Tuesday. The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services began receiving electronic enrollments through Nevada’s health insurance exchange,
Nevada Health Link, in October. At the start, the agency was receiving about 121 applications per day electronically, representing about 40 percent of all Medicaid applications, Willden said. By December, “the floodgates opened” and enrollments jumped dramatically, sometimes reaching 3,000 per day, Willden said. “Since mid-December, the pipeline is wide-open and we are getting thousands of Medicaid applications each and every day,” he said. Under President Barack Obama’s health care law, states were given the option to expand Medicaid eligibility to include people up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level. When the current fiscal year began July 1, Nevada had 320,000 enrolled in Medicaid. By February, that number spiked to 402,000

Jonathan Cohn: The Koch Brothers Are Accidentally Advertising The Benefits Of Obamacare
Some new advertisements attacking the Affordable Care Act actually show why the law is working. The ads are running in Colorado and Louisiana, two states where incumbent Democratic senators face difficult reelection fights. They come from Americans for Prosperity, the conservative organization backed by the Koch Brothers. In short, these stories may generate sympathy but they are rarely the stuff of tragedy. And that’s because of the protections Obamacare provides—which is to say, the very things that Koch-funded right-wingers want to gut.
After all, it’s Obamacare that sets a minimum standard for insurance, so that all policies include comprehensive benefits and set limits on out-of-pocket spending. It’s Obamacare that puts coverage within financial reach of many more people than before, by offering those subsidies and then, for some people, reducing out-of-pocket expenses even more. In the old days, it wasn’t so hard to find tear-jerker anecdotes: People without insurance or with inadequate insurance were filing for bankruptcy, losing their homes, and missing out on essential medicine. Now those stories are less common and, for the most part, they are among people who had these same problems previously. Telling the stories of these people would be a rationale for expanding the Affordable Care Act, not repealing it.

Yahoo: How Obama Crippled A Russian Bank With A Stroke Of A Pen
He may not take shirtless horseback rides across the steppes, or have a black belt in judo, but on Thursday, President Obama sent a message to Russian president Vladimir Putin about strength. Specifically, economic strength. The message was this: Whenever I decide to, I can pick up a pen, and kill a significant financial institution in your country. Obama’s victim was the St. Petersburg-based Bank Rossiya. In response to Russia’s takeover of the Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, Obama yesterday authorized the Treasury Department to add 20 members of Putin’s inner circle, as well as Bank Rossiya, to the Office of Foreign Asset Control’s list of “specially designated nationals.”
The designation makes the individuals named ineligible to do business with U.S. financial institutions, which is likely a major personal inconvenience. But for Bank Rossiya, the designation is something like the kiss of death. Bank Rossiya is not the largest bank in Russia by a long shot, but its significance lies in its clientele rather than its size. In announcing the sanctions, the Treasury Department noted that Bank Rossiya “is the personal bank for senior officials of the Russian Federation” including members of the Ozero Dacha Cooperative, an exclusive community where members of Putin’s inner circle live. In addition, it provides financial services to the single largest segment of the Russian economy – the oil, gas, and energy sector.

Michelle Obama Praised For Style, Warmth In China

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. first lady Michelle Obama brought the importance of education to the foreground on Sunday on the third day of a visit to China, where she has won praise for her approachability and admiration for her comments supporting freedom of speech.
Mrs. Obama, traveling with her two daughters, has been photographed at famous spots including the Forbidden City and Great Wall during the first independent trip by a U.S. president’s wife to China. She has won compliments for her elegant clothing and her interactions with ordinary people in a country where it is rare to see leaders’ spouses or children in public.
“She is very warm and frank, and when she is talking to people she conscientiously listens to what they have to say,” said Wu Qing, a retired professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University who met Mrs. Obama on Sunday.
“In China, we usually use weather to express our mood or state of mind, so the fact that the weather has been so nice these few days means she is very welcome in China,” Wu said.
Mrs. Obama hosted a discussion about education with a handful of Chinese professors, students and parents, as well as the new U.S. ambassador to China, Max Baucus, at the U.S. Embassy on Sunday morning. In the afternoon, she visited part of the Great Wall in the northern Beijing suburbs with her daughters, 15-year-old Malia and 12-year-old Sasha, and her mother, Marian Robinson.

On this anniversary, ThinkProgress takes a look back at all of the milestones in the GOP’s ongoing campaign to undermine a law that has defined national politics for half a decade:
MARCH 23, 2010: An immediate push to repeal.
Immediately after President Obama signed the Senate health care bill into law, 13 Republican state attorneys general file a federal lawsuit against the overhaul and Sens. Jim DeMint (R-SC), Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Rep. Steve King (R-IA) introduce legislation to repeal the law. King even offers a discharge petition. “If we can get to 218, we can force Nancy Pelosi to bring a repeal to the floor for a vote. If the Senate can do that…we have a chance to put a repeal on President Obama’s desk and make him veto that bill,” King explained. “Repeal and replace will be the slogan for the fall,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) predicts. Hillary Rodham Clinton told a group of enthusiastic college students Saturday that she is “very much concerned about the direction of our country” but was still deciding whether to pursue another presidential campaign.
During a forum at the Clinton Global Initiative University, Clinton fielded a question from Vrinda Agrawal, a student at the University of California, Berkeley who asked, “If you don’t represent women in politics in America as a future president, who will?”
More than 1,000 students roared with approval and applauded while former President Bill Clinton smiled, whispered into TV host Jimmy Kimmel’s ear and clapped along.
The former first lady said she appreciated the sentiment but was still deciding.
“I am very much concerned about the direction of our country and it’s not just who runs for office but what they do when they get there and how we bring people together and particularly empower young people so we can tackle these hard decisions,” Clinton said.

Well, she should know. She was elected to the Senate and then didn’t have the courage to vote against the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Why is that so egregious, one might ask. Well, Hillary knew damn well what the invasion was really about because the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) wrote to her husband in 1998 about all the reasons why the US should invade Iraq, but Bill declined. And we know who the PNAC members were – Cheney, Wolfowitz, Bolton, Rumsfeld, and so forth.
Hillary thinks everyone has a short memory. But not all of us do.
