War Dance – Many tribes practiced a War Dance on the evening before an attack to observe certain religious rites to ensure success. The warriors took part in a war dance while contemplating retaliation and the dance stirred emotions and filled the braves with a profound sense of purpose as they prepared for battle. Though the ceremonies varied from one tribe to another, there are common points among many including singing, often extending over an entire day and night, interspersed with prayers, handling of sacred objects or bundles, and occasional dancing. Often a sweat lodge or other purification ceremony was also held, incense burned, faces might be painted, and a pipe was frequently passed between the participants. Generally, the only musical instruments used in these ceremonies are rattles, drums, and whistles. In the Pacific Northwest, the Pueblos of the Southwest, and the Iroquois of the Woodlands, participants often were dressed and masked to represent the various gods or supernatural creatures and who acted out parts of the ritual.
War Dance names vary among Indian communities, with the Fancy Dance incorporating war dance rituals of the Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, and Kiowa – Apache tribes. To the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes, the wolf is symbolically linked to a warrior and the ritual is called the “Wolf Dance.” The LakotaSioux ‘ Omaha dance is named after the Omaha tribe, who taught the dance to the Lakota, and the war dance is known to Utah’s Paiute tribe as the Fancy Bustle, in reference to part of the dancer’s costume.

Yes, the slaves were eventually freed because, according to DeMint’s conflation of history, it was in the Constitution that “all men are created equal and have inalienable rights”. They were also freed due to the efforts of William Wilberforce, noted English anti-slavery campaigner, who just happened to die in 1833, thirty years before the Emancipation Proclamation and the `13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution. Government had no role in the freeing of the slaves. It was all people power!
But, wait, why did we need amendments to the Constitution if the freedom of slaves was in it from the start? Because, of course, nothing of the kind was in the Constitution. Slavery was allowed to continue, and the slaves were counted as three-fifths of a person for purposes of the census. I’m sure they were very glad to know that not only were they not full human beings under the Constitution, but that even that diminution of their humanity allowed slave states to have an outsized influence in Congress, since those slaves counted towards apportionment of House seats.
The fact is that history doesn’t look too kindly on the successors to those slave holders. They are, rather correctly, excoriated.

What’s worse than a politician saying something that’s demonstrably untrue? The politician repeating the falsehood after learning it’s demonstrably untrue.
Gov. Rick Scott is standing by two misleading campaign ads that falsely suggest 300,000 people in the state already lost their health insurance plans due to Obamacare.
“Clearly, the ad’s accurate,” Scott told reporters Wednesday in Miami, declining to elaborate.
Clearly, Scott isn’t being honest with the public.
At issue is Florida Blue, the state’s largest private health insurer, which has already said Florida’s Republican governor, in the middle of a tough re-election fight, is wrong.
In a public statement, Florida Blue spokesman Paul Kluding said, “To date, most of the members in our pre-ACA plans have kept their plans…. Technically, there were a couple of hundred members with unique plans that were not continued. We chose to migrate those plans to new ACA-complaint ones instead of making changes to their existing benefits.”

Nancy Pelosi: ‘Race Has Something To Do With’ Delay On Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) had some harsh words Thursday for Republicans who won’t allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform, saying she believes it would be an easier haul for the GOP if undocumented immigrants were mostly from somewhere like Ireland.
“I think race has something to do with the fact that they’re not bringing up an immigration bill,” she said at her weekly press conference. “I’ve heard them say to the Irish, ‘If it were just you, this would be easy.'”
Pelosi and other Democrats have urged House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to allow a vote on an immigration bill that has support from a majority of the Democratic caucus and three GOP members.
So far, they haven’t had any luck: Boehner promised a piecemeal process, if anything, and has said passing even smaller-scale legislation could be difficult given distrust of the president within the Republican conference. Despite releasing principles for reform in January, there have been no votes on immigration legislation since then.
Pelosi said she believes the bill would pass if Boehner allowed a vote.
“Let’s have a debate,” she said. “We think the votes are there. We’re absolutely certain that they’re there.”

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Thursday morning defended the Koch brothers, the wealthy conservative donors who have been repeatedly bashed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on the Senate floor.
“People want jobs. You don’t beat up people. I mean, I don’t agree with their politics or philosophically, but, you know, they’re Americans, they’re doing — paying their taxes,” Manchin said on “Fox and Friends” when host Brian Kilmeade asked if Reid’s speeches criticizing the Koch brothers “helps or hurts the cause for the country and for Congress.”
“They’re not breaking the law. They’re providing jobs,” Manchin continued.
The senator said that criticizing the Koch brothers is not going to help Democrats with voters.
“If you’re trying to rally the base, the bases have already been rallied. The right and left bases have been rallied,” Manchin said. “It’s us in the middle that have to start making something happen here in Washington to move this country forward.”

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) doesn’t think it’s a coincidence that many of President Obama’s harshest critics reside in the states that made up the Confederacy.
The New York congressman, who’s never hesitated to accuse the tea party of racism, said Thursday that he’s been dismayed by the level of opposition the Obama administration has faced.
“So it seems to me that if you were to follow where the slave-holding states were and where the Confederate flag flown, you will see even today not only Obama’s most serious critics but those people that don’t abide by the Voting Rights Act even today,” Rangel told MSNBC’s Chris Jansing. “So it’s a painful thing to see that with all of the progress we’ve made that a handful of people with so much hatred in their heart are willing to take this great Congress and country down because of that.”

Rupert Murdoch Reveals His Top Choices For 2016, Says He ‘Could Live With Hillary’

Billionaire media tycoon Rupert Murdoch provided a wish list for the 2016 presidential race in a rare interview published Thursday.
Murdoch told Fortune that his top choices are “between four or five people.”
“It’s not necessarily, although slightly, in order of preference: Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan, whom I have particular admiration for. I do for both. [Chris] Christie could recover,” he said. “Scott Walker, whom I don’t know, and Rand Paul, whom I agree with on a great number of things but disagree strongly on some things — too strongly perhaps to vote for him.”
Murdoch said he disagrees with Paul most strongly on foreign policy. He then detailed what he likes so much about Bush and Ryan.
His kind words for Ryan come as no surprise. After the Wisconsin congressman was tapped to be Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012, Murdoch hailed it as an “almost perfect choice.”

Analysis: Top White House Women Out-Earn Their Male Colleagues
Thursday that although an American Enterprise Institute study
showed that female staffers earned 88 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earned last year, the salary data also showed that women actually out-earned men among the highest-paid White House staffers.
Based on the same 2013 salary data, the Examiner found that 70 of the 150 White House staffers making more than $100,000 were women. Those top female aides earned $128,600 on average compared to $120,600 for top male aides, the publication found.
As the Examiner pointed out, those salary figures represent an

Ezra Klein’s new venture Vox is up, and so far, so OK — some fairly interesting pieces, and nothing like Nate Silver’s lamentable decision to make a professional concern troll his chief writer on climate. I am troubled by Ezra’s big inauguratory think piece, but that’s because I think the piece raises a genuine intellectual puzzle.
What Ezra does is cite research showing that people understand the world in ways that suit their tribal identities: in controlled experiments both conservatives and liberals systematically misread facts in a way that confirms their biases. And more information doesn’t help: people screen out or discount facts that don’t fit their worldview. Politics, as he says, makes us stupid.
But here’s the thing: the lived experience is that this effect is not, in fact, symmetric between liberals and conservatives. Yes, liberals are sometimes subject to bouts of wishful thinking. But can anyone point to a liberal equivalent of conservative denial of climate change, or the “unskewing” mania late in the 2012 campaign, or the frantic efforts to deny that Obamacare is in fact covering a lot of previously uninsured Americans? I don’t mean liberals taking positions you personally disagree with — I mean examples of overwhelming rejection of something that shouldn’t even be in dispute.
Or look at how liberals reacted to the woes of healthcare.gov. We heard a lot of talk about how it was Obama’s Katrina, or his Iraq. But was there anything like Bush’s “heckuva job” moment — which was matched by widespread insistence on the right that he was actually doing a great job? Was there anything like the years-long denial that anything was going wrong with the Iraq occupation? On the contrary, liberals were quick to acknowledge that the rollout was a disaster, and in fact sort of freaked out — which, as Noam Scheiber says, is what they usually do in the face of setbacks. And what’s more, as Scheiber says, that’s a good thing: faced with setbacks, liberals rush to fix things, rather than denying the problem. Hence the stunning Obamacare comeback.
At this point I could castigate Ezra for his both-sides-do-it article — but instead, let me pose this as a question: why are the two sides so asymmetric? People want to believe what suits their preconceptions, so why the big difference between left and right on the extent to which this desire trumps facts?

UPS Rehires 250 Workers After Firing Them For Protesting

UPS, one of the country’s largest shipping and logistics companies, has reached an agreement to give 250 New York-based drivers their jobs back. The workers were dismissed last month after protesting the firing of a longtime co-worker.
The deal was struck following Wednesday’s negotiations between top executives at the delivery company and union representatives from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 804, according to the NY Daily News.
The agreement will restore the jobs of those who protested the firing of longtime coworker Jairo Reyes in February. Reyes was fired after a dispute over the number of hours senior staff were able to work.
As part of the agreement, the workers will receive a 10-day, unpaid suspension. The union also will pay UPS for damages from the lost productive time.
“The company received acceptable terms and acknowledgement that the walkout was non-contractual,” wrote UPS spokesperson Steve Gaut in an email to The Huffington Post. “Our desire is to return to normal operations.”
The UPS workers welcomed the news. Steven Curcio, who has worked as a UPS driver in Queens for more than 19 years, attributed the reversal to the “insane amount of support from the local communities we deliver to.”
“Thank God it’s over,” Curcio told HuffPost by phone. “It affected communities. It affected families. It affected employees, but we can all get back to normal now.”
During recent weeks, more than 100,000 people have signed petitions calling on UPS to rehire the workers. On one day, more than 3,000 supporters called UPS CEO D. Scott Davis to complain about the firings, according to Joe Dinkin, the communications director at the Working Families Party, a progressive politics group that mobilized support for the employees.

Scarborough: Obama And Holder Should Stop Playing The Race Card (VIDEO)

Joe Scarborough said Thursday that the Obama administration plays the race card too often when addressing its critics.
A day after Attorney General Eric Holder said in a speech that he and President Obama have dealt with unprecedented levels of criticism, MSNBC’s resident conservative mocked Holder for suggesting that racism is at play.
“Because of racism, I mean, Holder, that’s what Holder suggested, the attorney general suggested yesterday, right?” Scarborough asked Politico’s John Harris.
“There’s no question,” Harris said. “That’s what he’s trying to get at. I don’t see any other reading of it.”
From there, Scarborough was off.
He argued that Holder, the first sitting attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress, has received the same treatment as Janet Reno, the attorney general under Bill Clinton.
Reno, he said, “was accused of murder by Republicans” after the Waco siege.
Scarborough went on to say that Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), the tea party congressman who’s dabbled in birtherism, would have been just as hard on Reno as he was on Holder. Moreover, Scarborough contended that Clinton dealt with just as much hostility as Obama.
“So when you’re going to say that Barack Obama and Eric Holder have been treated worse than anybody else in the history of American politics because of their race, well, you’re not even going back 20 years let alone 200,” Scarborough said.

MSNBC Forbids Ed Schultz From Dem Fundraiser But Allows Joe Scarborough to Raise GOP Cash

The MSNBC double standard is on full display as the network made Ed Schultz cancel an appearance at a Democratic fundraiser, but is allowing Joe Scarborough to speak at a Republican cash grab.
In December of 2013, Ed Schultz was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for the Broward Democratic Party’s big Unity Dinner in Florida, but he was forced by his bosses at MSNBC to cancel the appearance and claim that he didn’t know it was a fundraiser.
However, Republican Joe Scarborough is being allowed to deliver a keynote address for Cheshire County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner in New Hampshire in May. The fundraiser that Scarborough is appearing at costs $50 per person, and all of the money goes to the Republican Party.

Holder says GOP treats him differently

Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday castigated House Republicans for their treatment of him.
During a speech in front of a civil rights group founded by Al Sharpton, Holder said the administration has made significant strides “even in the face, of unprecedented, unwarranted, ugly and divisive adversity.”
“Forget about me, you look at the way the attorney general of the United States was treated yesterday by a House committee — it has nothing to do with me, forget that,” Holder told those attending the National Action Network convention in New York. “What attorney general has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment? What president has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment?”

Opposition to Medicaid Expansion Killing Republican Governors’ 2014 Election Hopes

Forget the media narratives that say Democrats could lose because of their support for Obamacare. While that convenient narrative is easy for beltway reporters to regurgitate, it is not supported by polling evidence. Polling data suggests that contrary to the dominant narrative, health care is a winning issue for Democrats not Republicans. This has become especially apparent in the many contests or the state house across the country.
Recent polling done by Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows that five incumbent Republican Governors who oppose Medicaid expansion are in danger o losing their bids or re-election. Not surprisingly, Maine Republican Paul LePage and Pennsylvania Republican Tom Corbett trail in their bids for re-election as their right-wing policies are far out of line with their blue-leaning electorates. However, even in Georgia and Kansas, Republican incumbents are losing to Democratic challengers. Even in these deep red states, a solid majority of voters want their Governors to expand Medicaid.
No Governor has made opposition to Medicaid expansion more a cornerstone of his campaign than Rick Scott in Florida. Yet, by a 58-33 margin, Florida voters want their Governor to accept the federal funding for Medicaid expansion. More than four in ten Florida voters say Rick Scott’s dogmatic opposition to Medicaid expansion makes them less likely to vote or him. In a head to head match-up with Democrat Charlie Crist, Rick Scott is losing 49-42 percent. GOP opposition to Medicaid expansion will prove to be Rick Scott’s undoing.

The ideologue Left – more aptly referred to as the emoprog cadre – a meltdown over President Obama’s comments in Brussels, part of which took on the callous, fundamentalist, and anti-American talking point spread by Russia and its allies that the United States’ invasion of Iraq makes it hypocritical for Americans to now criticize Russian annexation of Ukraine. President Obama, reiterating both that he opposed the American invasion of Iraq and that he’s the president that withdrew American troops from Iraq, nonetheless laid out the prima facie case why Russia’s assertions held no merit.
Nothing exemplified the Left’s latest jump-all-over-Obama phrase than Common Dreams’ hair on fire bloviating about Obama “defend[ing] US invasion of Iraq” – something the President, you would be shocked to learn, never did. This is the passage of the President’s speech to European youth that seems to have sparked so much Leftist poutrage at home:

Why GOP Wins In 2014 Could Mean A Democratic President In 2016

This fall, in a strange aligning of the electoral stars, Republicans will defend governorships in several key presidential swing states: Florida, Iowa, Nevada and Ohio. Pennsylvania and Wisconsin could also be added to that list, which expands the proverbial map a little bit more.
One might think that, if the GOP manages to hold onto those seats, they’d be setting themselves up to take back the White House in 2016. In conversations TPM had with a few independent strategists, that conventional wisdom was the norm. It feels like it makes sense: Why wouldn’t holding the state’s highest office help? Especially if the governor is popular, he can show up at campaign events with the presidential candidate and mobilize the ground game.
Flip five of those six states in the GOP’s favor on the 2012 map, and we’d currently be in the 15th month of the Mitt Romney administration. So Republican wins in 2014 should therefore give the party a better chance of seizing the White House two years later, right?
But it doesn’t. In fact, according to the same kind of political analysis that shattered the horse-race perception of the 2012 presidential race, the opposite is true: GOP gubernatorial wins this year would actually hurt the party’s chances of reclaiming the presidency in 2016.
Three Columbia and Harvard University professors, often cited by the now-famous Monkey Cage blog, explored this question in September 2012. They concluded that the governor’s party loses three percentage points in presidential elections. Especially in the two biggest swing-state prizes, Florida and Ohio, the lost votes could mean the difference between winning and losing the state.

Poll: Republican Guvs Trail Dem Challengers In 5 Races

A new set of polls by Public Policy Polling finds Republicans on the defensive in a number of governor’s races.
The polls, conducted by the Democratic-leaning PPP on behalf of MoveOn.org found the Democratic candidates in Maine, Kansas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Florida leading the Republican candidates.
• In Maine PPP found Republican Gov. Paul LePage (pictured) trailing Rep. Mike Michaud (D) 37 percent to 44 percent.
• In Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback (R) trails Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis 41 percent to 45 percent.
• In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Corbett (R) is behind the generic potential Democratic candidate by double digits. PPP found Corbett trailing the generic candidate 56 percent to 34 percent.
• In the Georgia gubernatorial race, state Sen. Jason Carter (D) just barely leads Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) 43 percent to 42 percent.
• In Florida, former Gov. Charlie Crist (D) leads Gov. Rick Scott (R), 49 percent to 42 percent.

Friends, I’ve been feeling down for a couple of weeks.
As Obamacare was surging to success, I couldn’t quite delight in it. Something niggled at me. That’s why I wrote this piece. The hoops through which Barack Obama has had to go through just to get anything done is without parallel in US political history.
But then it was revealed that Pres. Obama asked the major networks for primetime space to speak to the nation about ACA reaching its most generous enrollment targets, and what this meant for ordinary Americans, alone among industrialized nations denied the security of access to basic healthcare. The networks denied him.
Now I’m riled up. This disrespect shown Pres. Obama by the Big 3 networks was the last straw.
The media went on a jihad after the failed rollout of healthcare.gov, loudly trumpeting every failure, every glitch, every frustrated user of the website. The blandishments were endless and incessant. For weeks, newscasts led with the problems faced by the website, as if the website were the totality of the Affordable Care Act. It would feature every detractor of Obamacare on its newscasts, would consign the entire enterprise to dismal doom. As AP so famously put it, it would “take a miracle” for the law to reach its target.
But reach its target it did. In fact, it has surpassed it, to the consternation not only of the right wing wurlitzer, but of the perspicacious segments of our failed media experiment, the supposed gatekeepers of all that is newsworthy.
For all the attention which the supposed failure of the law received, it hasn’t received even one tenth of the attention for the success beyond all media imaginings.

There’s a certain splender to Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint’s retelling of the history of the Civil War. It’s almost as if DeMint and Sarah Palin are both graduates of the same finishing school for garbled buffoonery. I think this comment belongs on a plaque in the Smithsonian as a living testament to what has become of conservative “thought leaders” in this country.

An analysis of government data released Wednesday shows that the cost of drugs administered by doctors accounts for a growing piece of Medicare’s spending and varies widely from region to region in the United States, raising questions about whether some physicians may be misusing the pharmaceuticals.
Most of the 4,000 doctors who received at least $1 million from Medicare in 2012 billed mainly for giving patients injections, infusions and other drug treatments, those records show.
