    So who and what is behind these heightened attacks on FLOTUS?? This obsessive effort to discredit her in any way possible, and by any means necessary. A coordinated and relentless effort which has now reached scary levels!! What is going on here? This is not just a right-wing effort, there’s of course a Clinton component, but there’s much more to this.
    Reels and reels of news articles on the minutest and silliest of what would ordinarily be routine, inconsequential and often expected and overlooked stubs by any speech giver; hyped up to make her out as sorely lacking and inadequate – the tat to Hillary Clintons tit: her underwhelming book tour interviews and showing over the summer. Because heaven forbid Michelle Obama be revered for her effectiveness as the Closer.

    And as has been the case these past 7 years, there’s absolutely no one rallying to Mrs Obama’s defense. Not even the Democrats who demanded that she get on the campaign trail. Crickets as usual. Instead there’s this insidious thing going on where there’s an attempt to boost the Clintons all at Mrs Obama’s expense.
    On another point, what has stuck out for me particularly, and shocked me greatly, is Joy Ann Reid’s dismissive treatment of FLOTUS. That is on the very rare occasion that she even acknowledges her. I would have thought that JoyAnn Reid of all people would be covering Mrs Obama much more respectfully, and so much better, but not so. Between her and Perry Bacon’s breathless and starry eyed coverage of the Clintons,their greatness and majesty, and Perry’s almost contemptuous allusions to anything related to Mrs Obama, it’s been way too much to take. I somewhat see even if I don’t necessarily subscribe to their need to kiss up to the right white butts in order to boost their careers; what I don’t get is their conscious demeaning of FLOTUS in the process. When Lawrence O’Donnell does a much better job of giving FLOTUS her due, respectfully covering her efforts, it’s glaring.

    Mrs Obama deserves so much better than this shoddy treatment and disrespect she’s been continually subjected to. And when some of us join in to validate that shoddy treatment be it by omission or by commission, we only set ourselves back in ways that may not always be immediately apparent to all of us.

    No way any white woman Democrat or Republican, will let Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, and even Ann Romney be so disrespected and dehumanized the way we’ve sat back and let them disrespect and dehumanize FLOTUS. Whether we like it or not, she is us. We can fight all the other fights, but if we stand by and let them destroy this woman, it will have consequentially far reaching, deeper and more lasting effects on us in the end, whether we realize it or not.

    The bulk of the whole Hillary Clinton as invincible and the voice and hope of women thing, stems entirely from, and lies entirely with white women identifying with, rallying for and protectively circling around her without fail. That’s it. She’s done precious little to earn or deserve it, yet she continues to enjoy and revel in it.

    White women do that even as some of them stealthily, and others more brazenly, denigrate and spearhead targeted and malicious attacks on Mrs Obama; and even subtly and not so subtly try to recruit black folks to join in. They’ll preemptively, or if you call them on it first, quickly invoke their undying love and respect for Oprah or for some other random black female celebrity to give them cover from accusations of racism. They’ll do their darnedest to elevate that random black female actress or singer and even try to project political relevance onto them if they think for one second that it dims Mrs Obama’s shine. But watch them quickly stump on these same black actresses and singers if the celebrity and notoriety they helped manufacture and promote for them to displace Mrs Obama, begins to threaten any of their white Annies in the industry specifically, or beyond.

    Sorry to go on this long tirade here, but it’s something I feel strongly about and have felt led to keep sharing even when some don’t want to hear it. Something I strongly believe we cannot ignore or overlook. Even as we tackle the myriad of injustices out there, we must keep an eye out and refuse to allow them destroy Michelle Obama. She is us. All they see in her is us. All they hate about her, us. Whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

    Christie wants GOP control of voting rules, election officials

    New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) stunned voting-rights advocates this week, arguing that Republican governors should control “voting mechanisms” in order to help the party win the 2016 presidential election.

    In remarks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the New Jersey governor said, “Would you rather have Rick Scott in Florida overseeing the voting mechanism, or Charlie Crist? Would you rather have Scott Walker in Wisconsin overseeing the voting mechanism, or would you rather have Mary Burke? Who would you rather have in Ohio, John Kasich or Ed FitzGerald?”

    Political scientist Norm Ornstein paraphrased Christie’s comments this way: “How can we cheat on vote counts if we don’t control the governorships?”

    The good news is, the Garden State governor decided to clarify his remarks yesterday. The bad news is, Christie made things worse.
    “Everybody read much too much into that,” he said. “You know who gets to appoint people, who gets to decide in part what the rules are, I’d much rather have Republican governors counting those votes when we run in 2016 as Republicans than I would have Democrats. There was no specific reference to any laws.”

    Christie noted that he was specifically talking about electing Republican governors and that it is state legislatures that are passing voter identification requirements.
    According to another local account, the governor added, “What I was talking about was, who’s going to be in charge of the state when the votes are being counted.”

    As Rachel noted yesterday, “That’s the kind of ‘clarification’ that makes things worse, not better.”

    Forbes wants death panels for the poor

    Now that I’ve gotten your attention, it is actually a Forbes writer who wants to block grant Medicaid and allow states to conduct explicit cost effectiveness decisions for what treatments Medicaid will fund. Those decisions will lead to numerous early deaths.

    an advisory board recommended that Arkansas’s Medicaid program cover Kalydeco, a cystic fibrosis drug whose…net cost to the state Medicaid program will only be $239,000 per patient year….the state is being sued on grounds that its policy violates a federal statute requiring state Medicaid programs to pay for all medically necessary treatments. This case illustrates some deep flaws in current Medicaid policy….

    The WHO considers a medical intervention to be “not cost-effective” if it costs more than three times a nation’s per capita GDP per year of life saved. With U.S. GDP per capita currently at $51,749, it is pretty obvious that $239,000 lies pretty far outside the bounds of what WHO would deem cost-effective. If the WHO criteria are viewed as legitimate enough for entire nations to decide what tax-financed national health programs should cover, why should it be illegitimate for state Medicaid programs to adopt similar thresholds?

    I’ve written about Kalydeco before as it is an excellent case study of specialty drug pricing and policy implications. Compared to the next best alternative, it is an amazing treatment in both prolonging life and dramatically improving the quality of life. It is also on patent and will be a quarter million dollar a year drug for life. Until it is off patent, treating a CF patient from birth to eighteen is a five million dollar tab. Most insurers will pick up the cost and then aggressively do everything possible to get that patient to be someone else’s problem next year. Medicaid entities are the payers of last resort and will pay as well.

    About Renee Zellweger’s New Face, Our Shock, and Folks Telling Us to STFU

    A woman got on the red carpet the other day, looking vaguely familiar. Or like the cousin of Robin Wright and Sarah Jessica Parker. Wait. WAYMENT. That’s Renee Zellweger! Shut my mouth wide open! WUT? What happened to her face? I mean, that’s kinda rhetorical because we know it’s plastic surgery but what HAPPENED? How much surgery did she get? Why goes she look so unlike herself? When did this happen? I haz so many questions and I am not the only one who does.

    The whole interwebs has been marveling at Renee’s new look for the past day, because she looks unrecognizable. Folks have asked for extra receipts to really prove it’s her. What happened to the squinty-eyed, round-faced adorabo actress we all knew? Now she’s all copy and paste face white woman who was created from a mating session betwixt Robin Wright, Sarah Jessica Parker and possibly a dash of Helen Hunt.

    In a world that does a piss poor job of protecting women and keeping us safe, when it does choose to fight for women, it’s usually for white women only. The rest of us can go fend for ourselves because STRONG BLACK WOMAN and SPICY LATINA WOMAN are tropes used to dehumanize us, excusing the bad treatment we receive. Because we can handle it, right?

    But NOOOO don’t come for the prototype of the Damsel in Distress. Don’t you dare criticize a white woman or the word “bullying” might get thrown at you real quick and everyone will run to play Captain-Save-A-She. Because at the intersection of racism and sexism is white woman privilege. And while some feel like they’re dismantling one system, they’re upholding another.

    It is what compels many people to come to the rescue of someone that people are just pointing out looks different while someone else has been the butt of jokes for a decade and no one bats an eye in her honor. It’s the same privilege that allows a woman to write an essay for The Guardian, where she admits to stalking and harassing a blogger who she said trolled her, without fearing consequences (because she’s really well-connected). It’s the same thing that allows people to STFU when a woman of color is being harassed because “this is not my lane.”
