Holiday Candles 26Jingle Bells is a song featured in the 1948 album, Christmas Songs by Sinatra.

Sinatra rerecorded this song in his Capitol album, A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra.

A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra is a Christmas album by American singer Frank Sinatra, originally released by Capitol Records in 1957.

This was Sinatra’s first full-length Christmas album. It features the Ralph Brewster Singers along with an orchestra conducted by Gordon Jenkins.

Capitol reissued the album in 1963 with different cover art and a new title, The Sinatra Christmas Album, both of which also featured on the album’s initial 1987 compact disc pressing. The original title and cover were eventually restored for subsequent CD pressings in 1990 and 1999. In 2001, the album art was altered from its 1957 version.

Funny about the outrage and uproar by the usual racists over FLOTUS using a rather innocuous instance of her trip to Target, to discuss stereotyping and racism in America.

We all know that if she actually decided to discuss the racism she and her family have been subjected to these past several years, and the racism she’s encountered before that as a black girl from a poor family – if she’d decided to really go there, that America could not possibly handle any of it.

America is lucky that she’s restrained, and an infinitely more gracious woman than I’ll ever be. Or by now, those same brazen racists would be dealing with some really heavy truths. I’d really give them something to talk about, good reason to be outraged, and they’d be so busy nursing their wounds, there’d be very little room for their attempts at mockery. America and the loud racists that try to shout down the truth about racism in America, would be nursing some serious ego wounds by now.

Having said that, I do hope that one day Mrs Obama tells her story. I hope she tells her truth and that there is no white-washing the dehumanization and very personal and vicious attacks she’s been subjected to as the first black First Lady in a country that still thinks of black women as less than.

A country that thinks that black women are unappealing and undeserving of love, respect or chivalry. A country and world that for some inexplicably warped reason, thinks that Kate Middleton, Angelina Jolie and the others, by virtue of the color of their skin – and absolutely nothing else – are so much more worthy and deserving of elevation, love, respect and chivalry than the Princeton/Harvard educated, great partner and mate to her husband, and the great mother and daughter that is Michelle Obama.

“A Father Wants a Legacy. A Son Wants Acceptance” in New Promo for ‘Empire’

By Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and Act
    December 18, 2014 at 12:57PM

Here’s another look at FOX’s new drama “Empire,” the “epic family battle,” as the press release states, that debuts, with limited commercial interruption, on Wednesday, January 7, from 9-10 PM ET/PT, following “American Idol XIV.”

From Lee Daniels, Danny Strong (“Game Change,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”) and producer Brian Grazer, comes a drama about a family dynasty, set within a world of music, glamour, danger and power. Featuring music by prolific producer Timbaland, the series stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.

Jussie Smollett, Macy Gray, Bryshere Y. Gray (aka rapper Yazz The Greatest), Trai Byers, Gabourey Sidibe, Malik Yoba, and Grace Gealey make up the starring cast.

Howard plays Lucious Lyon, a charismatic, but tough chief of a record label titled Empire Entertainment, which is on the verge of an IPO.

Meanwhile, Henson is Cookie Lyon, the ex-wife of Lucious Lyon, who’s described as a “total badass” with a prison record (she served 17 years for dealing drugs, and used the money to help finance Lucious’ growing music empire, when it was still in its early days). She’s now out of prison, and has come for what’s hers!

The “Hannibal” and “Suits” actress is moving to the Hamptons to join the cast of ABC’s “Revenge” this season (its 4th), playing an aspiring socialite named Natalie Walsh, who has dreams of conquering high society, after coming from “humble-but-ambitious roots.” And, naturally, she has a few Hampton;s residents on her shit-list, though we don’t know who they are just yet.

This will be a recurring role for Torres.

The Best in Black Television of 2014

For the first television season in some time a lot has been made about diversity on television, primarily on the major networks. So for the end of the year, here is an assessment of standout Black shows and also some Latino ones.

By Curtis Caesar John | Shadow and ActDecember 18, 2014 at 1:18PM

For the first television season in a long time a lot of hubbub has been made about diversity on television, primarily on the major networks. While there has been a greater emergence of one or two Black characters on various shows over the past few years – in some cases token characters, but most often not really – the major difference for the new 2014-15 television season is that many of the hyped shows are headlined by very recognizable Black talent and in a few cases also produced and created by Black talent. There is another difference – a lot of them are really good!

So for the end of the year, here is an assessment of these banner shows. Included is a focus on Latino-helmed shows, as well as other programs with standout Black talent making a significant impact on TV viewing. If you have not seen them, catch up on them during the holidays and watch the new episodes come next year.

There are some SPOILERS abound, so be careful what you read.

    Black-ish

The most controversial of the list is easily Black-ish. Why? Well, come to find for no real reason at all. But we shall review some history behind the show for the sake of clarity. Once the advertisements for the show began to appear so did an instant and undeserved divisiveness over it. Some audiences were confused what the name even meant (not black enough vs. black $#*% vs. huh?), while others knew flat out did not want any airing out of Black/African-American issues on major television. Then there were the audiences who were upset to have a show with ‘Black’ so prominent in the title.

Nonetheless, the Anthony Anderson starring showing about a father who is concerned about his four children maintaining their would-be proud Black culture while living in a mostly White suburb premiered with high ratings and maintained such a comfortable place there too a full season was quickly ordered. While the pilot had its share of critics, by episode five, in which the youngest son is primed to get a spanking, the majority of the audience that did not find the show amusing got won over.

And how could they not? With Tracee Ellis Ross’ return to a major comedy since Girlfriends as wife Rainbow, powerhouse Laurence Fishburne as Dre’s highly critical father, and four very talented young actors as the kids, including Marcus Scribner as the geeky and always befuddled Andre Jr., Yara Shahadi, graudated from syndicated sitcom The First Family into a major one as pretty girl Zoey, and cuties (but not overly precocious) Marsai Martin and Miles Brown as Diane and Jack, the Kenya Barris created comedy was primed to succeed regardless of unwarranted comparisons to The Cosby Show. Personally, I had more faith in Barris’ and Anderson’s talent more than anything, and was happy to confirm that my pre-viewing thoughts on the show were surpassed.

That is not to say that room for improvement does not exist. Dre is not as boorish as some professional critics and audience members would contend, but he can be a bit too manchild-like at times. But then what comedy TV dad in this era is not? (Go through the list in your head right now…see?). That is not an excuse, yet Anderson’s Dre is very proactive at being a good father and is not afraid of defining himself as straight up Black, which should not be an issue to many people but ultimately is.

Oldest U.S. black college on verge of financial collapse
HARRISBURG, Penn. Wed Dec 17, 2014 5:03pm EST

(Reuters) – The nation’s oldest black college, Cheyney University, one of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-run universities, is on the verge of a financial meltdown that threatens its ability to continue operating, a state official said on Wednesday.

Cheyney’s student body has shrunk by two-thirds, to about 1,000, since its 1983 peak, and its four-year graduation rate is just 9 percent. A quarter of students never receive a degree, and student loan defaults are high.

“Cheyney is in dire, dire, dire straits,” the state’s auditor general, Eugene DePasquale, said. The university has had a deficit for four of the last five years, growing to a cumulative $12.3 million shortfall as of June 30, 2013.

Cheyney’s fiscal problems – students who are unable to repay debt and increasing pension costs – were exacerbated by cutbacks in state higher education funding.

Chicago Police Tortured Dozens of Black Men. Now, Victims Are Demanding Reparations.

Momentum is growing for a bill to finally help heal the wounds of years of torture of black men by the Chicago Police Department.

    BY F. Amanda Tugade

In front of the Chicago Police Headquarters yesterday on the city’s
South Side, a group of about 100 marchers, flanked by clusters of police officers on the sidewalk, huddled together with signs reading “Two Decades Too Many” and “Reparations Now.”

“We [are here] for the survivors of this heinous wrong … perpetrated
under the uniform and the badge of the city,” said Adam Green, a
University of Chicago history professor and a member of the Chicago
    Torture Justice Memorial (CTJM).

Members of activist groups We Charge Genocide (WCG), Project NIA and Amnesty International marched alongside members of CTJM Tuesday afternoon to deliver 40,000 petition signatures in support of the Reparations Ordinance. The five-mile march also held a memorial at City Hall to honor the survivors of police torture under former Chicago Police Officer Jon Burge, as well as to pay tribute to victims of policeviolence like Michael Brown.

Green said Tuesday’s demonstration was inspired by WCG’s recent visit to the United Nations’ Committee’ Committee Against Torture and
compelled the “city to act” on the “lack of true accountability for the
officers and system that perpetrated this violence.”

For nearly 20 years, Burge led a “torture ring of white Chicago detectives” and used violent measures to get confessions from their suspects. In 2010, Burge was convicted of perjury for lying about the police torture. After serving most of his four-year sentence, Burge was released from prison and transferred to a halfway house in Florida to complete the rest of his sentence.

“For too long, their witness, truth and human dignity was denied by a
department and a city that ignored facts and obstructed justice,” Green
    said.

Obama Protects Bristol Bay, Alaska from Future Oil and Gas Drilling

In a YouTube video released Tuesday evening, President Barack Obama announced a ban on future oil and gas drilling in Bristol Bay, Alaska by way of a Presidential Memorandum. Bristol Bay is one of the most productive wild salmon fisheries in the world, and is surrounded by sensitive tundra. Environmental groups and Native Alaskans have been working for years to secure protection for the area.

“Bristol Bay has supported Native Americans in the Alaska region for centuries,” Obama said in the video announcement. “It supports about $2 billion in the commercial fishing industry. It supplies America with 40 percent of its wild-caught seafood.”

“It is a beautiful natural wonder, and its something that is too precious for us to just be putting out to the highest bidder,” Obama said.

…Earlier this year, Newsweek caught up with Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, 25, a professional snowboarder and member of the USA Olympic snowboarding team. She is Alaska Native and hails from Bristol Bay, where she grew up commercial fishing with her family. Chythlook-Sifsof was in Brooklyn, New York, preparing for the People’s Climate March held in New York City in August. At the time, she said she was using her platform to speak out against Pebble Mine.

“The politics of Anchorage and the few other large communities just completely overpower anything that anybody else in these rural villages,” Chythlook-Sifsof said. “Nobody listens. It’s just what’s happening in all of rural Alaska, with mines and oil drilling. It’s taking over our state. The people who make these decisions don’t ever go out to these rural villages.”

In his announcement Tuesday, Obama gave credit to Native communities and local groups who have pushed for years for permanent protection for the Bay.

“Because of the great work that was done by local communities, Native Alaskans, folks who cared about making sure that we preserved this natural wonder for generations to come, we were able to take action that is going to take [Bristol Bay] off the bidders block and make sure that it is preserved into the future,” Obama said.

    Excerpt:
BUTTE, Montana (AP) — At least 786 children died of abuse or neglect in the U.S. in a six-year span in plain view of child protection authorities — many of them beaten, starved or left alone to drown while agencies had good reason to know they were in danger, The Associated Press has found.

To determine that number, the AP canvassed the 50 states, the District of Columbia and all branches of the military — circumventing a system that does a terrible job of accounting for child deaths. Many states struggled to provide numbers. Secrecy often prevailed.

Most of the 786 children whose cases were compiled by the AP were under the age of 4. They lost their lives even as authorities were investigating their families or providing some form of protective services because of previous instances of neglect, violence or other troubles in the home.

    It’s A Split Decision
Posted by Zandar at 9:06 am Dec 182014

As you may have heard, my hairpiece of a junior senator Rand Paul may be playing for the White House in 2016. But a funny thing happened on the way to the Oval Office for ol’ Rand. Kentucky law says that a candidate’s name can’t appear twice on the same ballot for different races, so Rand either has to run for Senator or for President, but not both. Rand and the KY GOP want to change that law or even go around it. But any election law business has to go through Kentucky’s current Secretary of State.

    You know, Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Six weeks after she lost her own bid for the U-S Senate, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (R-Kentucky) tells WHAS11 if U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) tries to appear on the same ballot for both Senate and President in 2016, she will challenge him in court.

“The law is clear,” Grimes said. “You can’t be on the ballot twice for two offices.”

Kentucky Democrats are not cooperating as Paul considers mounting simultaneous campaigns for Senate and President. Democrats maintained control of the Kentucky House in last month’s election, a roadblock to legislation favored by the Republican Senate to remove the prohibition. House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D-Prestonsburg) declined to consider a Senate bill to that effect earlier this year.

Paul may challenge the law in court as the Republican Party of Kentucky also discusses whether to hold a presidential caucus rather than a primary, which would allow Paul to follow the letter of the law by not appearing on the primary ballot, twice.

“We haven’t made a final decision one way or another,” Paul told WHAS11 last month, “other than I have decided I am going to run for reelection for the US Senate.”

Grimes was asked about the potential battle after a meeting at Kentucky’s Board of Elections on Tuesday.

“I will not be bullied,” Grimes said. “I think hopefully the people of Kentucky understand that over the course of this past year, and I will not hesitate to seek help and assistance in the opinion of a court.”

Pressed whether she would also seek an opinion from Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway (D), who lost to Paul in the 2010 Senate race, Grimes reiterated that she would rely on the courts.

“We’ll look to the court for any guidance that is needed,” Grimes said. “And at the end of the day, we’re not going to be bullied. I’ve done my job as Secretary of State for the people of Kentucky and I’ll continue to do that.”

New Jersey Paid Fees To Mary Pat Christie’s Firm After State Investment Was Terminated
    By David Sirota @davidsirota d.sirota@ibtimes.com on December 17 2014 8:13 AM

When the New Jersey pension system terminated a $150 million investment in a fund called Angelo, Gordon & Co. in 2011, that did not close the books on the deal. In the three years since state officials ordered the withdrawal of that state money, New Jersey taxpayers have forked over hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees to the firm. As those fees kept flowing, Angelo Gordon made a prominent hire: Mary Pat Christie, wife of Gov. Chris Christie, who joined the company in 2012 as a managing director and now earns $475,000 annually, according to the governor’s most recent tax return.

The disclosure that New Jersey taxpayers have been paying substantial fees to a firm that employs the governor’s spouse — years after state officials said the investment was terminated — emerged in documents released by the Christie administration to International Business Times through a public records request.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Treasury Department, Christopher Santarelli, said via email that while New Jersey “ended its investment” with Angelo Gordon in 2011, the payments were legitimate because the state continues to hold an “illiquid” investment in the firm. Christie officials declined to disclose details of what exactly that illiquid investment is and the justification for continuing to pay fees to Angelo Gordon. The governor, Mary Pat Christie and executives at Angelo Gordon all declined to comment.

What I’d advise Katherine Timpf is to stop bemoaning that the University of Michigan protects people from being discriminated against for their race, gender, or sexual preference but not for their political leanings, and ask herself why it is that so many educated people of conscience no longer see her political party as a legitimate participant in the national debate.

Obviously, Ms. Timpf has a point. Michigan communications Prof. Susan J. Douglas came out and wrote an article about why it is completely understandable to “hate” Republicans. Presumably she teaches some Republicans, so how does this not create some kind of hostile environment? If she said it was just fine to hate blacks or men or Jews, we’d be outraged.

If you actually read her piece, you’ll realize that she is really lamenting the fact that the Republicans have become so filled with hate that they’ve polarized the country to the point that the left hates them right back. She isn’t saying that this is a good outcome or hoping that it continues. She’s just saying, “you started it.”

And that’s fine. We all wish there were still progressive Republicans who deal with facts and simply have different priorities than we do. But there aren’t any of those Republicans left.

Today, this is a party that is animated by religious fundamentalism, that rejects science, that is hostile to racial and ethnic minorities, that is hostile to women’s rights, that is hostile to gay rights, that tries to deny people the right to vote, that intensely dislikes intellectuals, artistic folks, secular people and religious minorities, and that aggressively promotes xenophobia.

Unless you’re a white guy who was born here and speaks english, this party hates you.

The ‘Obama refuses to lead’ crowd falls silent
    12/17/14 04:56 PM
    By Steve Benen
Kevin Drum pauses today to take stock of the recent actions from President Lame Duck.
So how have things been going for our bored, exhausted, and disengaged president? He’s been acting pretty enthusiastic, energized, and absorbed with his job, I’d say.
It’s funny, in a way, to think about how long ago the midterm elections seem. Seven weeks ago, President Obama was apparently supposed to be a defeated man, crushed by an electoral rebuke, pushed into irrelevancy by an ascendant far-right majority in Congress. It was up to the White House, the Beltway said, to start looking for new ways to make Republicans happy.

There’s a script that lame-duck presidents are supposed to follow, and gosh darn it, Obama would be expected to play by the rules, slipping further and further out of frame.

But given today’s developments, it’s striking to realize what the president has done over the 58 days since the midterms.

Obviously, there’s today’s historic announcement about U.S. policy towards Cuba. There’s also Obama’s breakthrough climate agreement with China, the successful secret mission that freed American prisoners in North Korea, and the sharp reduction of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

And that’s just foreign policy. Closer to home, the president has unveiled a major new immigration policy that will bring new hope to 5 million immigrants; he’s taken the lead on net neutrality; and he’s scored a series of confirmation victories in the closing days of the Senate.

All of this comes against the backdrop of an improving job market, a highly successful ACA open-enrollment period, falling gas prices, a Russian crisis that arguably benefits the United States, and the number of Ebola cases in the United States falling to zero.

The White House’s many critics don’t want to hear this, but if Obama were a Republican, it’s likely we’d be inundated with coverage about how “President Comeback just got his mojo back.”

Now, after pressure from the show’s critics, who say it portrays black Greek life in a negative light, some advertisers are reconsidering airing ads on the network.

Carmex announced that it would pull its ads from the network until VH1 cancels the program.

Putin accuses West of trying to sideline Russia

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed Thursday to fix Russia’s economic woes within two years, pledging to diversify the gas-dependent economy and persuade businesses to help prop up the collapsing ruble.

While using a litany of accusations against the West, Putin acknowledged that Western economic sanctions over Russia’s course on Ukraine was just one factor behind the Russian economic crisis, saying a key reason was the nation’s failure to ease its overwhelming dependence on oil and gas exports. He estimated that sanctions accounted roughly for 25 to 30 percent of the ruble’s troubles.

As Putin spoke, the Russian currency was trading around 62 rubles a dollar, slightly lower than last night but up 12 percent after plummeting to historic low of 80 earlier in the week. Russia’s benchmark MICEX index rallied by 5.5 percent by midday Thursday.

Speaking with strong emotion, Putin sought to soothe market fears that the government could use administrative controls, such as obliging exporters to sell their currency earnings, to help stabilize the ruble.

He accused the West of trying to infringe on Russia’s sovereignty, adding that the Ukrainian crisis was just a pretext for Western action.
