An 11-year-old reported being raped twice, wound up with a conviction
Almost seven years ago, a troubled 11-year-old girl reported that she had been raped — twice — in her Northwest Washington neighborhood. Despite medical evidence of sexual assault, records show that no suspects were arrested and the cases were given only sporadic attention by the police . Instead, in the second case, the police had the girl, Danielle Hicks-Best, charged with filing a false report.
After Danielle’s family agreed to what her parents say was a poorly understood plea, she was convicted and made a ward of the court. She spent the next few years in and out of detention and secure treatment centers between episodes of running away. She never finished high school, had a baby at 15 and is struggling to move forward with her life.
“After 11, she lost the rest of her childhood,” said Danielle’s mother, Veronica Best, who campaigned for years with her husband, Mayo, to get the police to focus on the assaults, contacting officers all the way up the chain to D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier and her deputy, Peter Newsham.
Last fall, after inquiries from The Washington Post, the department launched new investigations into the cases and the way they were handled, according to the Bests and a law enforcement officer familiar with the matter.
Danielle and her parents have spent years urging the police to charge the suspects and seeking an explanation for the way the criminal justice system treated an already disturbed young girl who was sexually assaulted.

Capital New York traced around 85 NYPD IP addresses to the Wikipedia edits, which have altered and attempted to delete entries on stop-and-frisk, scandals, and prominent city figures. In Garner’s case, phrases such as “Garner raised both his arms in the air” were changed to “Garner flailed his arms about as he spoke.” An NYPD spokesperson has said the “matter is under internal review.”

‘Good Samaritan’ pastor arrested for lying to police about being shot and robbed by a black man

A Virginia pastor has been arrested for lying to police officials after he filed a report stating he had been robbed at gunpoint by a muti-racial couple after he acted like a “Good Samaritan” and stopped to help them with car trouble, CBS6 is reporting.
Pastor George Hunley of Louisa, Virginia, was taken into custody and then released after being charged with making false statements to police, which is a misdemeanor.
Earlier in the week Hunley called police, telling them that he had been shot after pulling over in his car to help a couple who appeared to be having car trouble. According to Hunley, the man — whom he described as African-American — pulled out a gun and demanded money. Hunley told police he struggled with man and was shot twice before escaping and driving to his home where called the them.
Hunley described his attackers as a black male and a white female wearing a stocking cap, who had a child with them in their late model Ford Taurus.
According to police, Hunley’s story immediately fell apart after they could find no evidence of his blood in his car, but did find his wallet and a checkbook that he claimed had been taken.
According to Louisa Sheriff’s Office Major Don Lowe, there was no robbery.
“Everything right now points to us believing there was no armed robbery,” Lowe explained. “There was no bi-racial couple, none of that really happened.”
The sheriff’s office did not speculate on how Hunley came to have two bullet holes in his leg, but did indicate that he may be asked to pay the police department back for expenses related to searching for his assailants.
His beady eyes were already a dead giveaway that pastor is a crook.

In the world of co-opting, appropriation, Iggy Azaleas and Kardashians, it seems as though, in the words of the great Paul Mooney, everyone wants to be a black woman until it’s time to actually “be a black woman.”
I get it.
Black women are the s–t. And we have been since the beginning of time. Black women have fought hard to be accepted in society, past and present. Black women are trendsetters and revolutionaries. So I understand why other women try their hardest to emulate us. But when it comes to imitating and appropriating, they all fail. There’s this thing called “authenticity.” You either have it or you don’t. And some women try really hard to “have it.”
Here are the top 6 things black women have that other women want:
1. Lips
Back in the day, big lips were made fun of, but nowadays women are going to extremes to have their lips inflated for a fuller, more succulent look. It all started with collagen injections, but now there’s a simpler way to give your mouth that extra boost.

Loretta Lynch’s A.G. nomination goes down to the wire

As of this morning, Loretta Lynch was nominated to serve as U.S. Attorney General 118 days ago. By some measures, the federal prosecutor, the first African-American woman ever to be nominated to the post, has waited longer than any previous Attorney General, for reasons Senate Republicans have struggled to explain.
What’s more, it’s been more than two weeks since Lynch cleared the Judiciary Committee, a move that ordinarily prompts the Senate leadership to schedule a confirmation vote on the floor soon after. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), however, delayed the vote for no reason, and still hasn’t said exactly when the vote will be, other than a vow to bring the nomination to the floor “next week.”
Will she prevail or not? At this point, the votes are probably in place – there are 46 Senate Democrats and four Senate Republicans who support her (Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, Jeff Flake, and Orrin Hatch). That’s 50, with Vice President Biden breaking the tie.
Roll Call’s David Hawkings noted this week that this will very likely be the closest-ever vote for an A.G. nominee.
As the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, Lynch has earned just the sort of tough but fair reputation that’s customarily made for bipartisan smooth sailing in the Senate. But at least three-quarters of Republicans are going to oppose her anyway, mostly because of a single position she’s taken as the nominee: Obama was on solid legal ground in deferring deportations of as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants.
For essentially the first two centuries under our Constitution, senators afforded the president free rein to stock his Cabinet as he chose, except in the most extraordinary circumstances…. It would not have been newsworthy at all – let alone a rationale for disqualification – for an attorney general nominee to take the same position as the president who nominated her in a balance of powers battle with Congress. (In fact, it would have been much more problematic for a nominee to openly break with the president in such a dispute.)
It’s almost as if Senate Republicans believe if they defeat Lynch, Obama will nominate an A.G. who opposes the White House’s immigration policy. (He won’t.) But as Hawkings added, “The single biggest reason Republicans oppose Lynch is that she disagrees with them on a single matter of public policy.”
The Senate simply isn’t supposed to work this way. Indeed, it’s never worked this way before, and it arguably can’t effectively work this way now.

Audra McDonald, George C. Wolfe & Savion Glover Team Up for ‘Shuffle Along’

Producer Scott Rudin said today that 6-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald is returning to Broadway next March to star in a show that looks at the making of the 1921 hit “Shuffle Along” – one of the first Broadway musicals to be written and directed by African Americans.
To be titled “Shuffle Along, Or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed,” the show will have a story by George C. Wolfe, who will also direct, with choreography by Savion Glover, who last worked together with Wolfe on the 1996 hit “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk.”
Previews are to begin March 14, 2016, at the Music Box Theatre.
The original “Shuffle Along” was a dance-heavy show that centered on a 2-way mayor race in a small Southern town.
According to Broadway.com: “In May 1921, Shuffle Along became the unlikeliest of hits, significantly altering the face of the Broadway musical as well as that of New York City. By the time Shuffle Along stumbled into town after a back-breaking pre-Broadway tour, it was deeply in debt and set to open at a remote Broadway house on West 63rd Street. In a season full of spectacles, such as Sally—a Ziegfeld musical comedy—and another edition of George White’s Scandals, Shuffle Along’s failure was almost a foregone conclusion. New York City was still in the throes of the Depression of 1920. And despite being celebrated, vaudeville performers, Miller and Lyles and Sissle and Blake had never performed on Broadway, much less written a musical. However, with an infectious jazz score and exuberant dancing, Shuffle Along ignited not just Broadway but all of New York City. NASA chief schools Ted Cruz for trying to downplay global warming research

Two days after bombing in a speech before a firefighters’ union, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was rebuffed in a Senate subcommittee hearing while trying to criticize NASA’s increased emphasis on studying climate change, Mashable reported.
“We can’t go anywhere if the Kennedy Space Center goes underwater and we don’t know it — and that’s understanding our environment,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told Cruz on Thursday. “It is absolutely critical that we understand Earth’s environment because this is the only place we have to live.”
The exchange came during a meeting of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space, which Cruz now chairs. Cruz expressed skepticism toward President Barack Obama’s $18.6 billion budget request for the agency — specifically recent increases in funding for studying Earth phenomena compared to a slight decrease in money for space exploration efforts.
“I would suggest that almost any American would agree that the core function of NASA is to explore space,” Cruz said. “That’s what inspires little boys and little girls across this country. It’s what sets NASA apart from any agency in the country.”
Holden explained that the decrease in funding for outer space-related projects was due in part to a desire to reduce the cost of those types of missions.
“The fact that earth science [funding] has increased, I’m proud to say, has enabled us to understand our planet far better than we ever did before,” Holden added. “It’s absolutely critical.”
For example, Holden said, NASA supports studies in Cruz’s home state of Texas that measured the effects of emptying out the state’s aquifers on local land elevations.
“That’s just looking at our environment, trying to make sure that we have a better place for all of us in which to live,” he told the senator. “I think that’s critical.”
The committee’s ranking member, Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) also knocked Cruz’s rationale, pointing out that the funding increase he criticized was actually a rebound from cuts levied under former President George W. Bush’s administration.
“The chairman has mentioned that he wants science to drive the process here,” Peters said. “Here we have leading experts in our country on science saying that the cuts that we saw in earth sciences were disastrous in the Bush era.”

Institutional racism is a known and proven reason why African Americans are disproportionally affected by poverty and all the social ills associated with it. Of course there are other factors, two of which have been outlined in a report by the Urban Institute.
According to the Urban Institute, two primary reasons why African American families do not accumulate nearly as much wealth as their White counterparts is that they have higher student debt and a very significantly lower likelihood of getting large amounts of money from family members.
Using nine charts, the report shows that in the last 50 years, there has been no improvement in the financial well-being of the Black community and the wealth gap between Black Families and White families has not closed.

Pastor Allegedly Killed and Set on Fire By Young Man He Had Mentored for Almost 10 Years

A St. Louis man has been charged in Clay County for the murder of a pastor who recently moved to the Kansas City area and whose dead body was found outside his apartment early last month.
On Friday, the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office charged Malcolm L. Bentley with first-degree murder for the Feb. 10 slaying of 49-year-old Darron Washington, reports the Kansas City Star. The 24-year-old, who was jailed in St. Louis awaiting extradition, is also facing charges of first-degree arson and armed criminal action.
The body of Washington, a former St. Louis resident, was found outside his apartment in Liberty when the local fire department and police responded to a call to help with a fire at the 200 Wilshire Blvd building. The authorities believed the fire must have been started intentionally by someone.
It was observed that a red 2013 Ford Fusion belonging to Washington had been moved from his apartment. The St. Louis police found the stolen vehicle where it was abandoned later that same day.
The Kansas City Star reports that Washington, who had been working with Ford for over 28 years, was recently transferred to the Claycomo plant of the company from St. Louis. He used to travel to St. Louis every weekend to lead New St. Louis Park Baptist Church, where he was the senior pastor.
Washington was known to be a mentor to young men in his community. He was said to have taken Bentley, who he had known since the young man was 15-years-old, into his apartment on Feb. 8. A woman said the late pastor had told her that Bentley, who had recently been released from jail, would be staying with him for a week, according to KCTV5.com.
Court records reveal that Washington was shot two times in the back of his head while he was asleep. Investigators found his body outside his apartment with bedding wrapped around it.

Just days before her nomination as attorney general goes to the Senate floor, Loretta Lynch is stubbornly stuck right around 50 votes — suggesting a confirmation fight the Obama administration once seemed certain to win with relative ease will go down to the wire.
Barring an 11th-hour surprise, Lynch is likely to be confirmed. But with four GOP senators currently backing her along with unanimous support from Senate Democrats, Lynch would secure the bare minimum required to be installed as the nation’s top cop – as long as senators hauled in Vice President Joe Biden to break a tie.

Scott Walker and the ‘home-state haters’ problem

As he makes the case for his national candidacy, Gov. Scott Walker (R) frequently touts his success in his blue-ish home state. When it comes to presidential elections, Wisconsin is considered a key battleground, but it has voted Democratic in seven of the last seven races, including two easy wins for President Obama. And yet, as Walker is eager to remind folks, he’s also won twice – three times if we count the recall election.
The point is obvious: the Republican governor has demonstrated an ability to appeal to voters in a state that leans in Democrats’ direction. That’s the kind of quality that should matter, the argument goes, as GOP voters weigh their 2016 choices.
The problem with the pitch, though, is that Wisconsin doesn’t seem too keen on Walker’s White House bid.
Gov. Scott Walker may be soaring in national presidential polls, but his job performance rating in Wisconsin has dropped to its lowest point since the 2011 protests, according to the latest Wisconsin poll from Public Policy Polling. […]
Those who say they approve of the job Walker is doing fell to 43 percent, while those who disapprove increased to 52 percent. In late October, the same Democratic-leaning poll found 49 percent approved of Walker’s job performance, while 47 percent disapproved.
In a hypothetical general election match-up against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the poll shows Walker trailing in his own state by nine points.
This is obviously just one poll, and the governor hasn’t even formally announced his presidential campaign just yet, but at this point, the governor has been in office for over four years – he was just re-elected last fall – and the fact that his constituents aren’t exactly rallying behind his national ambitions has to be a little discouraging.

Giuliani: Obama Is to Blame for Shooting of Ferguson Cops and Needs to Adopt Bill Cosby’s Views on Race
The former New York City mayor dished out more of his no-holds-barred take on how Obama’s inaction is dampening relations between black communities and the police.

One would never know that Rudy Giuliani was once a fairly moderate mayor of a liberal Northeastern city like New York, judging by the string of controversial comments he’s made recently. A few weeks after saying that President Barack Obama doesn’t love America, during a radio interview Thursday he suggested that Obama is to blame for the severe beating of a girl at a Brooklyn, N.Y., McDonald’s, and the shooting Thursday of two Ferguson, Mo., police officers, the New York Daily News reports.
During the interview with AM 970, Giuliani also said that Obama should be more like—wait for it—Bill Cosby.
Giuliani was asked to comment on a string of hot-button issues happening in African-American communities, and he tied them all back to “the tone” he says Obama has set.
“It all starts at the top. It’s the tone that’s set by the president,” Giuliani said.
Giuliani echoed the critics of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, saying that Obama is ignoring “enormous amounts of crime” committed by African Americans and is instead incriminating police officers. Giuliani argued that Obama should be advocating more on behalf of the country’s police officers.
“It is the obligation of the president to explain … that our police are the best in the world,” Giuliani said.
Giuliani went on to say that Obama should have used his role as president to stop the protests that engulfed Ferguson, and much of the nation, after a white police officer fatally shot an unarmed teen, Michael Brown, in August 2014.

Valerie Jarrett: I’ll stay at White House ‘until the lights go off’

Valerie Jarrett says she plans on staying in the White House until the end of President Barack Obama’s term.
In an interview with The New York Times Magazine published Friday, the president’s senior adviser discussed politics and policy and made clear that she wants to stick around until Jan. 20, 2017.
“Oh, my goodness, I intend to stay until the lights go off,” Jarrett said. “Why would I miss a single second of this?”
Asked whether she ever gets surprised at people describing her influence over Obama in terms similar to those used to describe Vice President Dick Cheney’s in the Bush administration, Jarrett demurred.
“Please don’t say that. Stop right there,” she told the magazine. “The president listens to people who have interesting things to say — that could be the most junior person on the staff or it could be a senior adviser or it could be a person who whispers something to him across a rope line.”
She also rejected media criticism of the president’s few personal relationships with Republicans, saying members of the party weren’t interested in golfing or bowling or schmoozing.
“They just wanted to say no,” Jarrett remarked.

First things first: Pauletta “Mary Jane” Patterson needs to get her key back from David.
David drops by M.J.’s unannounced (again!) to vent about his baby-mama woes. He feels trapped with a woman he barely knows for the sake of the baby-to-be. M.J. doesn’t want to participate in his pity-party therapy session because what woman would want to hear the man she loves go on and on about his problems with another woman? “I want you to tell me it’s not too late for us.” But it kind of is, bruh. At least, it should be.
Prominent attorney Brian Ellis commits suicide on live TV outside his law firm. The company reveals that he had a mild case of schizophrenia. M.J. comes up with the bomb news angle of suicide rates of successful black men. She rattles off a list of names—her good friend Terrence Porter (who was played by Ludacris last season), along with the real-life Chris Lighty, Shakir Stewart, Kenny McKinley and Capital Steez—to Kara’s approval. Sheldon calls with an exclusive scoop on the breaking story but won’t talk business over the phone. “Come to my house to talk business after hours” is code for “I’m trying to see you naked.”
Sheldon’s house is more fly than those luxury homes that HGTV loves showing off. He has the mood set with candles, wine and food. He cooks. Intelligent. Rich. David who? The chitchat leads to Sheldon offering his take on the black man’s plight. He makes salient points about black men like Brian being smothered by corporate greed, racism, oppression, fear and a system that never wanted them to succeed. To him, black men represent freedom, so that’s what “they” want to squash. The conversation escalates into the “black man vs. the black woman” oppression Olympics.
M.J. doesn’t let him off the hook when he says black men have it harder. Mary Jane reads like no other. However—how-freaking-ever—this was her best read yet. Society dumps on black women, and so do the black men who claim to defend our honor. “Who is left to love the black woman?” And let the church say amen.

On the streets of any ‘hood in the United States, Creflo Dollar would be called a hustler. Behind the pulpit, however, he’s called pastor and if that’s not a sin, I don’t know what else to call it.
Dollar, who made headlines in 2012 for allegedly assaulting his then 15-year-old daughter, has now launched a full-fledged campaign to pressure his World Changers Church International congregation into buying him a new, $65,000,000 Gulfstream G650 jet.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Apparently, the right reverend was traveling on his old private jet when the aircraft experienced engine failure. Fortunately, the pilot was able to land safely without any injuries or fatalities, but the incident was so frightening that Dollar felt compelled to reach out to his flock.
His G6 plea reads partially as follows:
We are asking members, partners, and supporters of this ministry to assist in the undertaking of an initiative called Project G650. The mission of Project G650 is to acquire a Gulfstream G650 airplane so that Pastors Creflo and Taffi and World Changers Church International can continue to blanket the globe with the Gospel of grace. We are believing for 200,000 people to give contributions of 300 US dollars or more to turn this dream into a reality—and allow us to retire the aircraft that served us well for many years.
To which the question has to be asked: Is American Airlines closed? Did Delta go on break?
According to a recent Atlanta Blackstar report, Dollar has an estimated net worth of $27 million dollars—200 times more than the $29,640 average annual income in College Park, Georgia where he holds court.

Valerie Jarrett says she plans on staying in the White House until the end of President Barack Obama’s term.
In an interview with The New York Times Magazine published Friday, the president’s senior adviser discussed politics and policy and made clear that she wants to stick around until Jan. 20, 2017.
“Oh, my goodness, I intend to stay until the lights go off,” Jarrett said. “Why would I miss a single second of this?”

Circulating Racist Videos, Emails and Outrage

Within days of the DOJ report about racist emails, a YouTube video of a racist chant by SAE fraternity members, went viral with more than 2 million views in the first 24 hours. The video, and the protests that followed, resulted in the swift closing of the fraternity’s house on OU’s campus and the expulsion of several students.

The point is, this is how many white Americans pass their time at work, sending emails that the senders likely characterize as “funny” or maybe “politically incorrect” but probably not racist (even though they are). They forward these emails for the same reason anyone forwards an email, “hey I saw this, and thought you would appreciate it.”
The forwarded racist email presumes a particular kind of audience: a receptive, like-minded reader. Mary Ann Twitty lost her job for sending racist emails, but it’s not clear that the emails were original content that began with her. If the responsibility for such email content rests solely with one sender and ends before it gets to the recipient, then it is a peculiar kind of individual responsibility for something – forwarding emails – which is in reality a type of collective activity.
Similarly, the video of the racist chant on the SAE bus at OU was circulated on Snapchat by friends of Parker Rice, Levi Pettit because it was the kind of thing that they and their friends felt comfortable sharing. They anticipated an audience filled with an imagined community of their like-minded, white college student friends.

Univision Host Fired After Saying Michelle Obama Looked Like Something From Planet of the Apes

Univision host Rodner Figueroa is now without a job after making a racist comment about Michelle Obama live on the air. Figueroa was fired on Wednesday after comparing Obama to someone from Planet of the Apes.
During El Gordo y la Flaca, Figueroa made the comment while discussing makeup artist Paolo Ballesteros’ ability to transform himself into female celebrities with just makeup. According to the Huffington Post, Ballesteros transformed himself into Obama, and that’s when Figueroa made his comment.
Mind you, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of Planet of the Apes, the film,” Figueroa said.
Univision Vice President of Consumer and Entertainment Public Relations Ivelisse Malave confirmed that Figueroa had been fired from the show:
Yesterday during the entertainment show “El Gordo y La Flaca,” Rodner Figueroa made comments about First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect the values or opinions of Univision. As a result, Mr. Figueroa was fired immediately.

White School Teacher Tells Colleagues ‘Just Shoot’ at Black Men Spotted In Neighborhood

Although there’s an African-American President of the United States, it doesn’t mean that racism is over. Just because we are more diverse as a society, it doesn’t mean that some people don’t still hold on to their preconceived prejudices.
Case in point is the attitude of many of the white residents in Bowleys Quarters, a predominantly white community located in Baltimore County, MD.
Anyone who is invested in their neighborhood doesn’t want to see crime in any way, shape, or form. Because of that, you have Neighborhood Watch Committees established to be on the lookout for those who are not regulars in the neighborhood. However, the residents of Bowleys Quarters are acting like vigilantes toward Black people. Severale white residents of Bowleys Quarters have displayed the same type of hatred towards Blacks that is exuded within the Ku Klux Klan and George Zimmerman.
In an article published in the Baltimore Spectator, a resident by the name of Jennifer Mays, who lives in Bowleys Quarters, posted a comment that she sees three black men walking in the street. After the post, one commentator by the name of Rob Bartosch said, “they should just be shot. After all, they were black weren’t they? And you know how these things go. One minute they’re walking in the street, the next thing you know, they’re rαping your infant grand children.” Here’s what’s even more interesting: It was discovered that Bartosch is a school teacher at Stemmers Run Middle School..
Sadly and shamefully, Bartosch wasn’t the only one to feel this way. Another person responded with the comment the ‘Only way to resolve the issue is just shoot em. I’m always ready for them f_____.”
Others commented as well as, defending the violent suggestions given for approaching the Black man, who hadn’t done anything to be approached. This kind of mentality is poisonous for a neighborhood, community, and race. What’s even more frightening is that these are the same people we interact with on a daily basis. Not knowing how a person feels about race and ethnicity is a dangerous scenario.

More recently, she was cast for a role on the Fox series Empire.
Leah made her television debut on the hit show last month. She was booked for the recurring role of Lola, the daughter of actor Jussie Smollet’s character Jamal Lyons and Jamal’s ex-wife Olivia played by actress Raven-Symoné. In a recent episode of Empire, we learn that Lola is in fact the daughter of Lucious Lyons, Jamal’s dad!
Miss Jeffries lives in Detroit, Michigan with her parents and her brother Floyd Jeffries IIII, who is also an upcoming actor.

Only Black Teacher at School Allegedly Asked to Resign Because Parents Don’t Like Black People
Much of the country is still discussing the Department of Justice’s scathing report on racism within Ferguson’s police department, but a Missouri teacher in a small town is accusing school officials and parents of being so racist that she was forced to resign.
Shanta Wheeler of Laddonia, Mo claims, according to Courthouse News, that as the school’s only black teacher, she was forced to stop teaching her class until a parent left the building because the parent “does not like black people.”
Wheeler claims that the school acknowledged the racism, even going so far as to ask her to resign because “the parents, community, and Community School District had such a problem” with race.
n her lawsuit against the Community R-VI School District, Community Superintendent Cheryl Mack and Community Elementary School Principal Natalie Gibson, the only black teacher in the majority white school district claims she was heckled when she entered the building, screamed at by parents, not allowed to defend herself against abusive parents, and asked to stop teaching her class because a parent had entered the building who did not like black people.
“No Caucasian employees had to endure similarly humiliating classroom interruptions,” the lawsuit alleges. Wheeler claims parents were actually encouraged to share their complaints about her with school administrators, while this was never the case for white teachers.
“Plaintiff was told that race is obviously a problem for the parents, the community, and the district,” alleges the lawsuit. “Because the parents, community, and Community School District had such a problem, plaintiff was asked to resign.”
Wheeler says she finally resigned in March of 2014 due to racism. Wheeler is suing over racial discrimination and retaliation, since she alleges that school officials made it difficult for her to get a recommendation so she could find a new job.

Ted Cruz meets the sound of silence

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has only been in the Senate for a couple of years, but he’s been a popular fixture on the Republican speaking circuit. In fact, the far-right Texan has become quite an accomplished orator, delivering polished, red-meat speeches, without notes or a teleprompter, complete with predetermined pauses for applause.
But what happens when Cruz strays from the Republican bubble and delivers the same remarks to less partisan audiences that don’t applaud the applause lines? Dave Weigel reported this week on the senator’s appearance at International Association of Firefighters’ bipartisan summit.
Firefighters’ unions are not as solidly Democratic as most labor unions. In 2010, for example, Scott Walker won his first term as Wisconsin’s governor with the backing of the Milwaukee Professional Firefighters Association. (Walker was invited to the IAFF summit but skipped it.)
Still, the firefighters assembled to hear from possible presidents gave Cruz one of the coldest receptions he’s ever given before a camera.
