WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says the head of President Barack Obama’s initiative for minority males will attend the funeral of a Baltimore man who died after sustaining serious injuries while in police custody.

Broderick Johnson, the chairman of the My Brother’s Keeper Task Force, will represent the administration at Monday’s funeral for Freddie Gray. Johnson is also the Cabinet secretary.

Gray is the 25-year-old black man who died a week after an encounter with Baltimore police left him with grave spinal injuries. He is being buried Monday in Baltimore.

The White House said Sunday night that Johnson, a Baltimore native, will be accompanied by two other officials.

Mourners paid their respects before Gray’s coffin on Sunday, after a night of violent protests led to nearly three dozen arrests.

Folks are going there. This phuc*ery in Tulsa County was mighty suspicious from the get-go. An officer yells “Taser Taser” but the suspect is already subdued. Then Bob Bates shoots him with his gun and says he’s sorry.

“Running While Black”: Protests Swell over Death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore Police Custody

AMY GOODMAN: Misconduct settlements involving Baltimore police officers have cost the city more than $6 million since 2011. One victim, Barbara Floyd, told The Baltimore Sun that a detective ground her face into the concrete in 2009.

BARBARA FLOYD: I stood by the tree outside of my door with my back facing the street. All of a sudden, I feel arms around my neck. So I was struggling, because I didn’t know who it was. Yeah, I was screaming, when I could, “Get off of me! Leave me alone! Why are you all doing this?” They never answered my questions. They don’t answer your questions. All they do is tell you to shut the hell up.

NARRATION: In March 2009, Barbara Floyd was watching a disturbance outside her home when, she said, a police officer grabbed her.

BARBARA FLOYD: He put another leg in the small of my back. He was grinding my face into the pavement. He kept telling me to lay down. I was already down.

AMY GOODMAN: That was Barbara Floyd. She received a settlement for $30,000.

    • Liza says:

      More… (Lawrence Bell is AA)

AMY GOODMAN: That was Barbara Floyd. She received a settlement for $30,000. So you’re the former president of the Baltimore City Council, Lawrence Bell.

      LAWRENCE BELL: Yes.

AMY GOODMAN: More than $6 million for police misconduct over the last few years. Now, you weren’t president during that time, but can you talk about this?

LAWRENCE BELL: Yeah, I mean, this has been going on for a number of years. And what’s interesting is that the problem in Baltimore, I believe, became exacerbated in the early 2000s, when former Mayor Martin O’Malley began the zero-tolerance policy. And what happened is that basically, you know, they’d been arresting people for petty nuisance crimes, petty things, more arrests, more arrests, and there’s been a devaluation of black life. And so, these things have happened. Now, one thing to note is that many of the settlements back over the several years occurred outside of the public meeting setting in the—at the Board of Estimates in Baltimore, so you didn’t have a great groundswell of talk about it, because a lot of it wasn’t really out in the public view as it is today. But this has been going on for a while.

And I think that it just speaks to the need for change. We need civilian review. We need a different attitude within the police department. We need a better attitude in the whole city. And I think, as I said earlier, we need to have jobs in these communities. You know, something that’s concerned me is that, not only in Baltimore, but around the country, even among a lot of the black leaders, we’ve heard them talk about the issue of police misconduct, but we haven’t talked about the ways that black lives are minimized when we are economically depressed and more money is going into prisons, building prisons, than has gone into jobs in places like Sandtown in Baltimore.

Yeah, maybe his spine was only 50 percent severed before the “rough ride.” The fatal injuries were inflicted before they rammed his paralyzed body into the van. The rough ride made it worse. Freddie Gray never had a chance.

“Running While Black”: Protests Swell over Death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore Police Custody

The Department of Justice is now investigating Gray’s death for possible civil rights violations. Since 2011, Baltimore has paid roughly $6.3 million to settle police misconduct claims. Baltimore authorities say five of the six officers involved in the arrest of Gray have now given statements to the Baltimore police. One has not. They remain suspended with pay. Baltimore police union attorney Michael Davey told reporters the officers were right to chase Gray after he ran away when a lieutenant “made eye contact” with him.

MICHAEL DAVEY: They pursued Mr. Gray. They detained him for an investigative stop. Had he not had a knife or an illegal weapon on him, he would have been released. They know what role they played in the arrest of Mr. Gray. What we don’t know and what we’re hoping the investigation will tell us is what happened inside the back of the van. He was placed in the transport van. Whether he was seat-belted in, I don’t believe he was. Our position is: Something happened in that van; we just don’t know what.

REPORTER: Do you think any of the six officers committed a crime that day?

    MICHAEL DAVEY: No.

REPORTER: Unequivocally. And what makes you say that?

MICHAEL DAVEY: Based on the information that I know, no.

    http://www.democracynow.org/2015/4/23/running_while_black_protests_swell_over

    • Liza says:

“Our position is: Something happened in that van; we just don’t know what.”

That’s there “position” which means, “this is the lie we’re going to tell and we’re going to stick with it.” Well, what happened inside of that van is obvious. Freddie Gray was dying from a fatal injury inflicted during when the cops took him down. The witness on the video is screaming at the cops that “his leg is broken,” but we know that it was his neck and he was already paralyzed, totally unable to move on his own volition. So, what could have possibly happened in the van except that Freddie Gray was dying a slow, tortured, and horrible death? Who knows what the cops were doing all that time in the van, but if they try to sell a story that Freddie Gray fought them which is probably where they are going with this, then this will be one of the most egregious cop lies ever told.

How do these people sleep at night? They have families? Children? People who love them? It defies my imagination. They are nothing but evil.

    • Liza says:

      Yahtzeebutterfly replied:

We all know that putting Freddie (in the van) WAS the cover-up.

They knew he was seriously injured BEFORE they put him in the van. They knew they could put him in the van and then blame the van.

Have you noticed they have still not released the interior van video that they say exists.

    • Liza says:

Yeah, those cops knew he couldn’t walk or move and they knew they had a problem. But if they think they can convince any reasonable person that Freddie Gray could put up a fight, they must be out of their minds. But the phat phuck cop union attorney appears to be going there. Well, what he’s going for is reasonable doubt, but I really don’t think that’s possible. This needs to be tried at the federal level. If AG Loretta Lynch wants a perfect, winnable case, this is it.

And the other possibility that he went into the van without a broken a neck, had a medical emergency inside the van not caused by the cops, and ended up in the hospital with a broken neck and severed spine is so ludicrous that it’s hard to believe they are even considering that as a possibility for reasonable doubt. No one could look at that video and agree with such lunacy except another cop or cop lawyer.

    • Ametia says:

WHY SHOULD FREDDIE DEATH SPARK CHANGE IN BALTIMORE POLICE?

WHEN IS THE SYSTEM GOING TO CHANGE WHERE BALTIMORE POLICE ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR KILLINGS OF UNARMED, UNPROVOKED BLACK MEN & BOYS?

  21. Ametia says:

“Our President can talk about of the Israel’s right to defend themselves, but he can’t give his lip service to black people being TERRORIZED,

Our young black men are being TERRORIZED, and older men, and women for that matter., being terrorized, fearing an encounter with police.”

    • Ametia says:

      spot on

    • Liza says:

I was thinking about this earlier today. Throughout these recent murders committed by cops, have you seen even one cop stand up and tell the truth? You know that when six cops are involved in a murder, the greatest likelihood is that one or two cops actually committed the murder, delivered the fatal blow. So the cops go back to the station and put together a story (with their police chief, et al) that they think will exonerate all the cops.

I’ve been wondering about how police applicants are screened and why these sociopaths end up being cops. But I just realized something about what they probably look for in a cop and it isn’t whether or not he/she is a sociopath. They are looking for people who won’t rat out their “brothers.” That’s got to be all there is to it. You cannot be a person who would stand up to what is wrong, even if an innocent person has been mutilated and murdered. You have to be the kind of person who puts the brotherhood (or gang, or pack) above all else, above everything righteous that you were ever taught. Every lie you tell, every victim you allow to suffer or die, and every family that is denied justice is LESS IMPORTANT than your brotherhood and every lie you tell to support a brother is justified. And, most importantly, you cannot be morally conflicted about it because if you are then you are dangerous to the brotherhood.

There’s your description of an ideal applicant.

    • Ametia says:

This IMAGE is exactly how Dr. Welsing described them. They’re there just for the Black folks who protest against their RACISTS KILLINGS.

  22. Ametia says:

All of these groups and their SPECIFIC COMPLAINT CAN BE RECOGNIZED, but BLACK PEOPLE’s specific COMPLAINT OF RACISM WHITE SUPREMACY, the historic dynamic of which SLAVERY was a part, that somehow we are not supposed to talk about that.”

Well, we better keep talking about it!
