Yo Yo Ma performed Tchaikovsky’s “Andante Cantabile” for Boston Symphony conductor, Seiji Ozawa. This is not the live version that was performed at the Kennedy Center. I’m still searching for the video.

The year is fresh but what’s really old is well-meaning white people who do things that make my blood pressure rise. I know, friend. You really wanted to honor us in some way but one way you could do it is by having a Black friend who has sense, so you can run things by them.

The latest in the WHY MUST YOU FAIL SO BAD? life series is from a Hungarian journalist named Boglarka Balogh. She says “she travels the world and writes about human rights issues.” Ok, cool.

Not mad at them. Gotta get those Middle Eastern$$$$$.

Their husband and Daddy’s Black Cards WORK!

I remember watching a documentary about this really exclusive Department Store in London, and they had created this series of very expensive purses. Nothing under $50,000. The man putting together the collection was like, ‘ yes, this can only go for a certain clientele, but all we need is for one woman to really like it. ‘ They had produced them, and it had been months…no real takers. On an unrelated shopping trip, some woman married to a Saudi Prince came in and looked at them for like 10 minutes and left the store. A few days later, she sent back THE JET to pick up A DOZEN purses.

    A DOZEN at $50,000/ A PURSE.

So, not mad at them at all, trying to get that $$$$$

Hyper-tokenism II: Othering the Black Female Body in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

    Shadow and Act
By Andre Seewood | Shadow and Act
    January 6, 2016 at 2:07PM

In 2014, just a few months after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her emotionally draining and physically exposed role as “Patsey” in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” (2013), it was announced that Lupita Nyong’o would be cast in J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the “Star Wars” franchise for its new owner The Disney Studios.(1) Nyong’o’s addition to the cast along with John Boyega and Oscar Isaac’s casting announcements gave new hope to many “Star Wars” fans of color who have long wanted to see greater racial diversity within George Lucas’ beloved and globally entertaining space fantasy film.

Later in May of 2015, it was publically announced that the character that Lupita Nyong’o was cast to play would be a CGI character rendered through the complex technical process of motion capture most successfully done with actor Andy Serkis as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s “he Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

This announcement did nothing to dim the new hope of “Star Wars” fans of color; indeed many simply shifted their excitement and expectations upon the notion that John Boyega and Oscar Isaac would be seen physically within the film while the notion that an Academy Award winning actress of color would not be physically seen did little to poison that hope of inclusion into what is essentially a White male fantasy.

The promise that traditional cinematic racial tokenism fulfilled before the election of President Obama is that at least Black and other minority actors could have a role in a White film: servant, gangbanger, sidekick, zombie food, stick-up kid, dead body, first to go, last to know; whatever the role it didn’t matter, at least one could take comfort in knowing that White controlled Hollywood could throw us folks of color a few crumbs from their vast and opulent tables of money, prestige, glamour and power. And if you played your role well enough they’d even give you an award as credit for playing along and supporting the fact that, in a White film, the White characters ultimately wield full dramatic agency.

BET founder Bob Johnson engaged to Lauren Wooden

By Emily Heil and Roxanne Roberts J

They’ll always have Paris … BET founder Bob Johnson popped the question to his girlfriend of five years, Lauren Wooden, in the City of Light last month.

Her answer? Well, what else does one say to 7.5 carats (nestled on a giant ice sculpture in the shape of the Eiffel Tower, natch), a shower of rose petals and a bottle of Dom Perignon, following a private after-hours tour and dinner at the Musee Rodin? And you’re standing in front of the sculptor’s romantic “The Kiss”?

Wooden, a 36 year-old student pursuing an international business-management doctorate in Paris, said mais oui, of course.

The over-the-top proposal was a bit better orchestrated than the first time Johnson, 69, asked her to marry him — on their first date, five years ago. The mogul recalls first clapping his eyes on Wooden, who was then a concierge at the Los Angeles Four Seasons. Love at first sight? “For me absolutely,” he says. But Wooden was more cautious. She said yes to dinner but turned down his proposal that night.

#NewsOneNow Exclusive: Samaria Rice, Mom of #TamirRice on @KingJames, other athletes addressing the death of her son

    • Liza says:

I don’t know why LeBron James has not made any kind of statement or gesture to support the family of Tamir Rice. He did support Trayvon Martin when the Miami Heat NBA team posed with hoodies, and that was a powerful gesture. But, even though LeBron is in Cleveland now, I do not believe that there is anything to be gained by trying to put pressure on any of these famous athletes to support the murdered children. Like everyone else, they have to do it because they want to do it, because they believe it is the right thing to do.

Sometimes powerful people have to wait for the right moment. Like yesterday when PBO announced his executive actions on gun safety. How many massacre sites has he visited, how many speeches has he made, how many devastated families has he talked to an tried to comfort and how many years has he been doing this? Finally, after giving up on Congress to do what is right, he had his moment.

The same is true for LeBron James. We don’t know what he’s thinking, but his actions indicate that he is concerned about his community, he is already engaged in helping his community, and I suspect he has a vision for his life after the NBA. He’s still very young, and he may believe that his moment is later not now.

      • rikyrah says:

Them going after LeBron makes no sense. They need to be getting a serious candidate to challenge that clown. They need to get signatures for said candidate. They need to get money for said candidate, and then they need to GET OUT THE VOTE for the candidate. THAT will bring lasting change.

      • Liza says:

Exactly. That is a hell of a lot of hard work, but that is how communities rid themselves of corrupt elected officials like McGinty.

    • Ametia says:

GOVERNOR RICK SNYDER ORCHESTRATED THIS POISONING WITH THE APPOINMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGERS.

      • Liza says:

He’s responsible, that’s for damn sure. He should be brought up on federal charges. Water quality is regulated by the EPA and water agencies are required to report to the EPA on a regular basis, and there could be other regulatory agencies involved as well depending on how they (are supposed to) do things in Michigan. But apparently, Snyder has been ruling that state like a dictator, declaring himself to be above the law. He needs to be charged as a criminal for what he has done. People were poisoned without regard for their health and well being.

    • And he told citizens to drink the poison water. Charges should be brought up immediately. Throw his ass in jail.

Rep. John Lewis to have Navy ship named after him
Jan 5, 2016 By Terry Shropshire, Managing Editor and Web Editor

Unlike many of his contemporaries from a bygone era, where the likes of Martin Luther King and the Kennedy brothers were given posthumous honors of varying kinds, legendary Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.) will have a Navy ship named in his honor.

On Wednesday, the Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will announce that the first ship of the next generation of fleet replenishment oilers (T-AO 205) will be named USNS John Lewis after the civil rights movement hero and current U.S. representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District.

The naming ceremony will take place at 2pm in the Cannon House Office Building, Room 121.

    Economic News:
The latest private payroll report from ADP showed a larger-than-expected increase in jobs during the month of December.

Private payrolls jumped by 257,000, way more than the 198,000 that was expected by economists.

Job gains were evenly spread across small, medium, and large businesses in December.

By industry, the largest number of jobs were added in the professional/business services sector and trade/transportation/utilities work.

Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, said, “Strong job growth shows no signs of abating. The only industry shedding jobs is energy. If this pace of job growth is sustained, which seems likely, the economy will be back to full employment by mid-year. This is a significant achievement, given that the last time the economy was at full employment was nearly a decade ago.”

Oregon militia leader Ammon Bundy battles big government, but perfectly OK with taking $530,000 in federal loan

The leader of the armed anti-government group occupying a remote
national wildlife preserve in Oregon wants the feds to mind their own
business — except when it comes to loaning him money.

Public records show Ammon Bundy took a $530,000 loan from the Small Business Administration in 2010 for his Arizona-based truck maintenance company, Valet Fleet Services.

The big-budget borrow cost taxpayers $22,419, according to federal
records. While Bundy sees green when it comes to the government’s loan program, he sees red regarding most federal laws.

Bundy, 40, said Tuesday he and the self-proclaimed patriots camping out at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge will go home when a plan is in place to turn over management of federal lands to locals.

A new kind of Birtherism for the 2016 campaign
    01/06/16 08:00 AM
    By Steve Benen
In August 2013, long before he was a leading Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump sat down for an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl for a chat about Trump’s racially charged conspiracy theory about President Obama’s birthplace.

But the interest wasn’t limited to the president. Karl asked, “Ted Cruz, born in Canada, is he eligible to be president of the United States?” Trump responded, “Well, if he was born in Canada, perhaps not. But I’m not sure where he was born.”

The ABC reporter tried to clarify, explaining that Cruz really was born in Canada, but the senator is legally a natural-born American citizen. “Look, that will be ironed out,” Trump said. “I don’t know the circumstances. I heard somebody told me he was born in Canada.”

That “somebody” was the journalist sitting a few feet away, who told him the facts a few seconds earlier. The entire conversation was bewildering.

Trump’s focus generally shifted away from birther garbage in the months that followed, but in an interview with the Washington Post late yesterday, the GOP frontrunner did his best to put Cruz’s birthplace back in the spotlight.
“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem,” Trump said when asked about the topic. “It’d be a very precarious one for Republicans because he’d be running and the courts may take a long time to make a decision. You don’t want to be running and have that kind of thing over your head.”

Trump added: “I’d hate to see something like that get in his way. But a lot of people are talking about it and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport.”
