This week we’ll take a look at the ground-breaking comedy show by the Wayans family, ‘IN LIVING COLOR.’
In Living Color is an American sketch comedy television series that originally ran on Fox from April 15, 1990,[1] to May 19, 1994. Brothers Keenen and Damon Wayans created, wrote and starred in the program. The show was produced by Ivory Way Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television and was taped at stage 7 at the Fox Television Center on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California. The title of the series was inspired by the NBC announcement of broadcasts being presented “in living color” during the 1950s and 1960s, prior to mainstream color television. It also refers to the fact that most of the show’s cast were black, unlike other sketch comedy shows such as Saturday Night Live whose casts were mostly white. It was controversial due to the Wayans’ decision to portray African-American humor from the ghetto in a time when mainstream American tastes regarding black comedy had been set by more upscale shows such as The Cosby Show, causing an eventual feud for control between Fox executives and the Wayans.
Other members of the Wayans family—Kim, Shawn, and Marlon—had regular roles, while brother Dwayne frequently appeared as an extra. The show also starred the rising stand-up comic Jim Carrey alongside previously unknown actor/comedians , Jamie Foxx, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, and T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh. Additionally, Dancing with the Stars judge and choreographer Carrie Ann Inaba, and actress and pop music star Jennifer Lopez, were members of the show’s dance troupe The Fly Girls with actress Rosie Perez serving as choreographer. The show launched the careers of Carrey, Foxx, Davidson, Grier, Keymáh, Inaba, and Lopez and is credited with bringing the Wayans family to a higher level of fame as well. It was immensely popular in its first two seasons, capturing more than a 10-point Nielsen rating; in the third and fourth seasons, ratings faltered as the Wayans brothers fell out with Fox network leadership over creative control and rights. The series won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in 1990. The series gained international prominence for its bold move and its all-time high ratings gained by airing a live, special episode as a counterprogram for the halftime show of U.S. leader CBS’s live telecast of Super Bowl XXVI.
Following Keenen Ivory Wayans’ success with Hollywood Shuffle and I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, Fox Broadcasting Company approached Wayans to offer him his own show.[2] Wayans wanted to produce a variety show similar to Saturday Night Live, but with a cast of people of color that took chances with its content.[3] Fox gave Wayans a lot of freedom with the show, although Fox executives were a bit concerned about the show’s content prior to its television debut.[2]
In announcing its debut, Fox described In Living Color as a “contemporary comedy variety show”.[4] In its preview, the Christian Science Monitor warned that its “raw tone may offend some, but it does allow a talented troupe to experiment with black themes in a Saturday Night Live-ish format.”[5] Keenen Ivory Wayans said, “I wanted to do a show that reflects different points of view. We’ve added an Asian and a Hispanic minority to the show. We’re trying in some way to represent all the voices. … Minority talent is not in the system and you have to go outside. We found Crystal doing her act in the lobby of a theater in Chicago. We went beyond the Comedy Stores and Improvs, which are not showcase places for minorities.”[1]
The first episode aired on Sunday, April 15, 1990, following an episode of Married… with Children.[1] The first episode was watched by 22.7 million people,[6] making it the 29th top show for the week.[7]
The Miami Herald said the show was as “smart and saucy as it is self-aware” and “audacious and frequently tasteless, but terrific fun”.[8] The Philadelphia Inquirer called it “the fastest, funniest half-hour in a long time”.[9] The Seattle Times said it had “the free-wheeling, pointed sense of humor that connects with a large slice of today’s audience”.[10] The Columbus Dispatch described it as a “marvelously inventive” show that has “catapulted television back to the cutting edge”.[11]

The sketch comedy show helped launch the careers of comedians/actors Jim Carrey (then credited as “James Carrey”), one of only two Caucasian members of the original cast, Jamie Foxx, who joined the cast in the third season and David Alan Grier (an established theatre actor, who had worked in Keenen Ivory Wayans’ 1988 motion picture I’m Gonna Git You Sucka).
The series strove to produce comedy with a strong emphasis on modern black subject matter. It became renowned for parody, especially of race relations in the United States. For instance, Carrey was frequently used to ridicule white musicians such as Snow and Vanilla Ice, who performed in genres more commonly associated with black people. The Wayans themselves often played exaggerated black ghetto stereotypes for humor and effect. A sketch parodying Soul Train mocked the show as Old Train, suggesting the show (along with its host, Don Cornelius) was out of touch and only appealed to the elderly and the dead. When asked about the show’s use of stereotypes of Black culture for comedy, Wayans said, “Half of comedy is making fun of stereotypes. They only get critical when I do it. Woody Allen has been having fun with his culture for years, and no one says anything about it. Martin Scorsese, his films basically deal with the Italian community, and no one ever says anything to him. John Hughes, all of his films parody upscale white suburban life. Nobody says anything to him. When I do it, then all of a sudden it becomes a racial issue. You know what I mean? It’s my culture, and I’m entitled to poke fun at the stereotypes that I didn’t create in the first place. I don’t even concern myself with that type of criticism, because it’s racist in itself.”[12]

Shonda Rhimes’s Powerful Message on Receiving Her PGA Award: ‘I Deserve This’
“I’m going to be totally honest with you, I completely deserve this,” Shonda Rhimes said after receiving the Producers Guild’s Norman Lear Award for Achievement in Television Saturday night. “I have against the odds, courageously pioneered the art of writing for people of color as if they were human beings. I’ve bravely gone around just casting parts for actors who were the best ones. I fearlessly faced down ABC when they completely agreed with me that Olivia Pope should be black. And I raised my sword heroically and then put it down again when Paul Lee never fought me about any of my storytelling choices.” The delivery of her speech may have been tongue-in-cheek, but as the solo female recipient of the award, Rhimes had good reason to leave self-deprecation at the door.
Rhimes went on to make the larger point that she had not created a new vision for television, but simply insisted on depicting the world as she sees it. “There was no blazing and no trails,” said Rhimes. “It’s not trailblazing to write the world as it actually is. Women are smart and strong. They are not sex toys or damsels in distress. People of color are not sassy or dangerous or wise. And, believe me, people of color are never anybody’s sidekick in real life.”

Exclusive: Gov. Rick Snyder’s Men Originally Rejected Using Flint’s Toxic River

An emergency manager said no to using the river in 2012 after speaking to environmental regulators. An ex-Flint official said the governor’s office reversed that decision.
DETROIT — The emergency manager for Flint, Michigan, appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2012, rejected using the city’s river as drinking water after consulting with the state’s environmental protection agency.
Snyder appointed Ed Kurtz to be Flint’s second emergency manager and Kurtz selected Jerry Ambrose to be the city’s chief financial officer. Both men were tasked by the Republican governor’s administration with restructuring the city’s government to save money after it was in danger of becoming insolvent. One cost-saving measure considered was to quit buying municipal water from Detroit.
In a civil deposition not reported until now, Ambrose testified under oath that emergency manager Kurtz considered a proposal to use the Flint River, discussed the option with the Michigan
Department of Environmental Quality, and then rejected it.
In 2014, Ambrose was deposed in a civil lawsuit brought by retired Flint municipal workers against the state over severe cuts to their health care benefits. Attorney Alec Gibbs questioned Ambrose
about the water decision (a year before Flint learned it was being poisoned).
“There was brief evaluation of whether the city would be better off to simply use the Flint River as its primary source of water over the long term,” Ambrose said. “That was determined not to be
feasible.”
“Who determined it wasn’t feasible?” Gibbs asked.
“It was a collective decision of the emergency management team based on conversations with the MDEQ that indicated they would not be supportive of the use of the Flint River on a long-term basis as a primary source of water,” Ambrose answered.
“What was the reason they gave?” Gibbs asked.
“You’ll have to ask them,” Ambrose said.
How could the river that was rejected as Flint’s permanent water source in December 2012
suddenly become suitable for consumption a mere 16 months later?
And who actually made the disastrous choice to start using the previously rejected river as the city’s temporary water source?
Howard Croft, the former director of public works for Flint who resigned in November 2015, asserted more than four months ago in a videotaped interview with the ACLU of Michigan that the decision to use the dangerously corrosive river came directly from the Snyder administration.

In a letter obtained by the ACLU of Michigan (PDF), emergency manager Darnell Earley wrote to DWSD in March 2014:
“Thank you for the correspondence […] which provides Flint with the option of continuing to purchase water from DWSD… The City of Flint has actively pursued using the Flint River as a temporary water source… There will be no need for Flint to continue purchasing water to serve its residents and businesses after April 17, 2014.”
Snyder did not mention this letter in the history of the Flint water crisis that he presented in his State of the State address last week:

If the governor really wants to come clean he needs to start telling the whole truth, not just convenient pieces of it.

What remains still in the dark is the exact role Michigan’s detail-oriented governor played in subjecting the people of Flint to the hazards of a polluted river doubling as their municipal water supply. We also need to be clear on what the governor’s office and other state officials knew about the dangers posed by that river before the decision to use it was made.
Snyder can help shed light on that by releasing all of his emails—from both his government account and any personal email accounts that he might have used to conduct state business—going back to at least as early as the start of 2012 when members of his own administration considered and rejected using Flint’s river.

I did not know Janese Talton-Jackson on a personal level. There’s a chance I might have seen her before. And a lesser chance I might have spoken to her. But if I did either, I don’t remember.
But after news of her death began to circulate Facebook Friday afternoon, and more and more people spoke of her, I learned there weren’t many degrees of separation between us. Practically none, actually.
She left behind three children. Twin girls and a one-year-old son. The father of her daughters is the son of my mom’s best friend, Ms. Debbie. She also lived in a house owned by Ms. Debbie; a house right next door to my dad’s house. They’re separated by two driveways and a line of hedges. My dad was devastated by the news. And, if that’s not enough of a connection already, Janese’s brother happened to be Pennsylvania State Representative Ed Gainey, a man I’ve known for 25 years. I first became acquainted with Ed through basketball. When my dad would take the nine-year-old me to the courts behind Peabody High School to work on my game, Ed was one of the older teens and early 20-somethings who’d often be there too. Some days, after I was done drilling, my dad would play with them, and I’d watch them play. And then, as I got older and better, I’d play with them too. Today, Ed is a popular politician and a friend. And now, as of early Friday morning, brother to a murdered sister; a woman shot and killed in the street by a man because she said no.
According to the police report, Janese was at Cliff’s Bar, located in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood. As the bar neared closing, she was approached by Charles Anthony McKinney, who apparently was interested in her. The interest wasn’t reciprocated, and she left. McKinney followed her outside, was rebuffed again, and then shot her in the chest. She was declared dead at the scene. She was 29.

China Deepens Its Footprint in Iran After Lifting of Sanctions

ZARRINABAD, Iran — Rising from the yellowish, treeless plains so typical for central Iran stands a square labyrinth of pipes and conveyor belts, topped by a silver chimney that glitters in the summer sun.
Sanctions against Iran failed to halt the construction of the complex, a steel mill that went into operation in September and now churns out ingots and billets. The sanctions also did not stop Sheng Kuan Li, a Chinese businessman, from pouring $200 million into the project.
Mr. Li is one of many Chinese investors who in recent years worked around the sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States and other world powers over Tehran’s nuclear program.
His steel mill and other similar endeavors are the result of a strategic pact that gives China a much-needed western gateway to Middle Eastern markets and beyond, and that has saved Iran from international isolation and economic ruin.
On Saturday, both countries agreed to increase trade to $600 billion in the coming decade.
Cotton leads effort to sink sentencing overhaul

Sen. Tom Cotton, the hawkish upstart who’s already made waves railing against the Iran nuclear deal and government surveillance programs, is now leading a new rebellion against a bipartisan effort to overhaul the criminal justice system — hoping to torpedo one of the few pieces of major legislation that could pass Congress in President Barack Obama’s final year.
GOP tensions over a bill that would effectively loosen some mandatory minimum sentences spilled over during a party lunch last week, when Cotton (R-Ark.), the outspoken Senate freshman, lobbied his colleagues heavily against the legislation, according to people familiar with the closed-door conversation. The measure passed the Senate Judiciary Committee last fall with bipartisan support.
“It would be very dangerous and unwise to proceed with the Senate Judiciary bill, which would lead to the release of thousands of violent felons,” Cotton said later in an interview with POLITICO. “I think it’s no surprise that Republicans are divided on this question … [but] I don’t think any Republicans want legislation that is going to let out violent felons, which this bill would do.”
Cotton isn’t alone. Other Senate Republicans, including Sens. Jim Risch of Idaho and David Perdue of Georgia, also registered their strong opposition during the lunch, even as Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) vigorously defended the bill, which he helped negotiate. Risch stressed this message, according to one Republican source: Shouldn’t the GOP be a party of law and order?

It is no coincidence that following FLOTUS’ powerfully effective speech at the DNC, that the focused and well-coordinated attacks on her only heightened, and became mainstreamed – including hit pieces by Reid Cherlin – former Obama White House-West Wing Assistant Press Secretary, big Clinton cheerleader – who admitted he never worked for FLOTUS and never interacted with her – yet he wrote this hit piece that focused entirely on FLOTUS – and made his rounds giving snide interviews about her…Mr Cherlin remains good friends with former and current White House senior staff – including Josh Earnest, Jennifer Palmieri, Jon Favreau, Tommy Vietor etc…
They chipped and chipped and chipped away at her and her popularity…And there was nary a peep from anyone…not the DNC or the DCCC…or the CBC…nothing…
Operation Discredit and Diminish FLOTUS was now in full swing…because even though she’d always been clear about having no interest in politics, they couldn’t take any chances – and cutting her down, destroying her reputation and the woman herself, was a precautionary measure – just in case…Racists, right-wingers, PUMAs, Clinton acolytes, other – all in (un)witting collaboration..
You must recall too that John Podesta – former Chief of Staff to Bill Clinton, now Chairman of Hillary’s campaign and writer of gleeful email to Hillary when polls showed President Obama’s numbers falling…
You must recall that long before he came in for a one year 2014 -2015 stint as Counselor to President Obama, John Podesta was tapped by then President-elect Obama to lead his transition team…He was charged with searching, filling and coordinating the appointments of senior admin. staff, cabinet secretaries and political appointees…which ended up with complaints about most positions being filled by mostly fellow Clinton acolytes – so much so, some of us raised eyebrows – and President Obama had to reassure us that though these folks were from another time and cabinet, that they would be following his lead, his policies…
Hard to imagine that Podesta who privately rejoiced with Hillary when the President’s numbers were falling, didn’t engineer some funky sabotage stuff with some of the folks he put in place…or recommended to be held over from the Bush administration…like Bob Gates..
It is no coincidence that many of these same folk like said Bob Gates, Leon Panetta – also former Chief of Staff and OMB Director to Bill Clinton, Larry Summers – all bad-mouthed and talked down the President after they left the White House – while they strangely, talked up, effusively praised and touted Hillary and her ‘leadership’ in interviews and their books…
And it is no coincidence that the President is getting so much more accomplished since many of Podesta’s Clinton acolyte hires left…Perhaps that might explain why Podesta himself wiggled into the President’s inner circle for a year…and just before he left with some of the hold-overs to go run Hillary’s campaign…

With the bromance between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump over, the mogul turned GOP front-runner has begun trash talking the senator from Texas. “He’s a nasty guy,” Trump recently huffed. “Nobody likes him. Nobody in Congress likes him. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him.” For members of the politerati, this was no revelation. As Cruz has quickly climbed the political ladder, he has left a long line of associates who complain, without much prompting, that he is an insufferable schmuck.
A prominent aide to George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign could barely contain himself when we asked him to discuss Cruz, who worked in the campaign’s policy shop. This person described Cruz as hyper-arrogant and widely despised, and he emphasized—over and over—that the pervasive dislike of Cruz within the Bush ranks had nothing to do with ideology. (Cruz, he noted, never objected to Bush’s call for compassionate conservatism, immigration reform, and national education standards, and no one on the campaign regarded him as an ideologue.) The problem was simple: his personality.
“That’s exactly what he was: a big asshole,” says a campaign veteran who worked with Cruz.
“Ted thought he was an expert on everything,” says this campaign veteran, who asked not to be named. “He was a smart and talented guy, but completely taken with himself and his own ideas. He would offer up opinions on everything, even matters outside his portfolio. He was a policy guy, but he would push his ideas on campaign strategy. He would send memos on everything to everyone. He would come to meetings where he wasn’t invited—and wasn’t wanted.” In fact, this Bush alum recalls, “the quickest way for a meeting to end would be for Ted to come in. People would want out of that meeting. People wouldn’t go to a meeting if they knew he would be there. It was his inability to be part of the team. That’s exactly what he was: a big asshole.”

– Hillary, as she is.
– Throw away your vote, O’Malley, Green, Write in
– Don’t vote.

LAST DECEMBER Isabel dos Santos commemorated her tenth wedding anniversary to Congolese businessman Sindika Dokolo with a party. Subtlety wasn’t on the menu. She jetted in dozens of friends and relatives from as far as Germany and Brazil, who joined with hundreds of local guests in Angola for three days of lavishness, including a bash at the Fortress of Sao Miguel in the capital city of Luanda and a beachside Sunday brunch on the posh Mussulo peninsula. The invitation, according to one attendee, came in a sleek white box, promising a celebration of “a decade of passion/ a decade of friendship/ a decade worth a hundred years. …”
A decade worth $3 billion is more like it. At 40 Dos Santos is Africa’s only female billionaire, and also the continent’s youngest. She has quickly and systematically garnered significant stakes in Angola’s strategic industries–banking, cement, diamonds and telecom–making her the most influential businessperson in her homeland. More than half of her assets are held in publicly traded Portuguese companies, adding international credibility. When FORBES outed her as a billionaire in January the government disseminated the news as a matter of national pride, living proof that this country of 19 million has arrived.
The real story, however, is how Dos Santos–the oldest daughter of Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos–acquired her wealth. For the past year FORBES has been tracing Isabel dos Santos’ path to riches, reviewing a score of documents and speaking with dozens of people on the ground. As best as we can trace, every major Angolan investment held by Dos Santos stems either from taking a chunk of a company that wants to do business in the country or from a stroke of the president’s pen that cut her into the action. Her story is a rare window into the same, tragic kleptocratic narrative that grips resource-rich countries around the world.
