Wednesday Open Thread | Bernie Sanders vows to continue fight

Bernie California PrimaryBernie Sanders on Tuesday vowed that his campaign will “take our fight” to the Democratic National Convention despite Hillary Clinton clinching the Democratic presidential nomination.

Sanders said he plans to compete in next week’s Democratic primary in Washington, D.C., the final nominating contest of the 2016 primary. Media outlets, however, named Clinton the presumptive nominee after earning enough pledged and superdelegates to clinch the nomination.

“We are going to fight hard to win the primary in Washington, D.C. And then we take our fight for social, economic, racial and environmental just to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,” Sanders told a rowdy crowd of supporters in Santa Monica, California.

“I am pretty good at arithmetic and I know that the fight in front of us is a very, very steep fight. But we will continue to fight for every vote and every delegate we can get,” Sanders said.

A House resolution honoring Muhammad Ali has the support of only one Republican.

The measure is drafted to recognize the “extraordinary life, accomplishments, and countless contributions” of Ali, who died last week at the age of 74.
A list of the resolution’s 42 co-sponsors includes only one Republican: Rep. Mia Love (Utah), who is black.

Reid: Trump ‘routinely insults’ GOP senators to their faces
    June 08, 2016, 10:48 am

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) knocked Republican senators Wednesday for supporting their party’s presumptive presidential nominee even though he “routinely insults” them.

“Donald Trump, who routinely insults Republican senators to their faces, among others, who denigrates Senator McCain. … We want this man to appoint someone to the Supreme Court?” Reid said from the Senate floor.

    June 8, 2016

A Georgia man is facing assault charges after he allegedly shouted racial slurs and rammed a vehicle because an 82-year-old woman with a walker had been slow to get into her car.

Savannah Morning News reported that the incident occurred on May 26 as Ira McPherson was assisting her 82-year-old mother-in-law, Joan Wilson, in the Red & White Jones Food Market parking lot.

Federal Judge Says 2 Ohio Voting Laws Are Unconstitutional

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A federal judge blocked certain requirements for how thousands of ballots are counted in Ohio, saying in a decision on Tuesday that the policies are unconstitutional and violate the Voting Rights Act.

…Among other changes, the laws require voters to provide certain identifying information when casting absentee or provisional ballots. Voters must include their name, signature, valid forms of identification, address and birth date. Ballots from legitimate voters could be rejected because of errors or omissions.

…The judge, Algenon L. Marbley of United States District Court, said the laws could harm black voters in particular.

“The Ohio General Assembly took action after the disastrous 2004 election to expand voters’ access to absentee and provisional balloting,” the decision said, “and the rollback of these improvements will disproportionately harm African-American voters.”

…The judge blocked Mr. Husted from requiring full and accurate completion of absentee- and provisional-ballot forms before otherwise qualified voters’ ballots could be counted. He also blocked sections that reduced the time voters could correct errors and prohibited poll worker assistance.

…Also on Tuesday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit delivered an incremental victory for critics of Republican-engineered changes to North Carolina’s elections procedures.

In a brief order, the court said North Carolina could not, at least for now, enforce its recent rollbacks of same-day voter registration and out-of-precinct voting. The appeals court, which sits in Richmond, Va., will hear arguments about North Carolina’s practices on June 21, nearly two months after a federal judge upheld the procedures.

We just got this email from TPM Reader DL. And as far as I can tell, she’s right. There does not seem to be any mention of Donald Trump on the official Republican Party website,

Hillary is there. Bernie is there. George H.W.Bush is there. Reagan is there. Reagan/Bush. Lincoln is there. No Trump anywhere. Not on the blog, signups. Not anywhere that I could find.

Scalpers already selling Ali memorial tickets
    1:21 p.m. EDT June 8, 2016

While thousands weathered hours of waiting in line for a free ticket to Friday’s Muhammad Ali memorial service, some are willing to part with their piece of history – for the right price.

The tickets, and many, many pleas for tickets, have flooded sites such as Craigslist, with sellers seeking hundreds of dollars for the Friday service at the KFC Yum! Center.

One seller was offering five tickets on the site and included a photo of them as proof.

“Ali tickets for trade of things valuble. What you got,” reads the post.

Within the first hour of its posting Wednesday afternoon, an eBay post selling four tickets at $50 each had been viewed more than 100 times.

We’ll never know what PBO really thinks of Hillary Clinton. All I see in any of this is that he is doing what is expected of him to help the presumptive Democratic nominee win the election.

      • eliihass says:

Whether we choose to admit it or not, we all know the truth..

Even though folks are quickly shuffling things around to pretend stuff that wasn’t was…those of us who paid attention, know what we bore witness to…we know what we saw and what we heard….we know what we know..

The President’s decision to support Hillary Clinton doesn’t change what I do know happened..

Nor does it change my mind about not voting for her…

If anything, it makes me even more determined not to – and even more convinced about not voting for her…

The fact that this President and First Lady have to give in to the arm-twisting and literal hostage-holding, blackmail, perpetually indulging and playing along with the very same insatiably demanding folks who easily could have, but never really embraced them or allowed them the space or unwavering support to fully be great and savor this historic presidency…

Or the space to enjoy what other Presidents and First Ladies always have…the immunity to dignifiedly recuse themselves and stay out of, and above the fray of messy, contentious presidential elections…the immunity to not have to expend any of their hard-won political capital …the immunity to not have to put themselves in harms way and deepen enmities, make new enemies, stake their reputations, their legacies…their integrity..

        And for what..

To appease a power-hungry, self-serving, corrupt woman and her supposedly best and all-knowing campaigner former president sleaze of a husband, who in the end will still manage to take and get all the credit…

But most importantly, the Clintons would never ever stake or give up anything to or for the Obamas…Never..

We can all pretend and allow the media and the Clintons themselves – and even former members of the Obama campaign and admin who now work for Hillary, to revise history…we can let everyone gloss over, downplay and even erase the last several years and all that transpired..

We can pretend that the closest close friends of the Clintons like Lynn de Rothschild, Susie Tompkins Buell who remain incredibly hostile and contemptuous of the Obamas to this day…are an anomaly and have waged their unending slander wars against their fellow Democrat and sitting President just for fun…and that Hillary and Bill are completely oblivious to and unaware of it all…We can pretend that what transpired at Foggy Bottom aka HillaryLand and supported by the words and actions of their elite PUMAs and their e-mails too…was all just imagined…the hostilities and plots hatched to actively undermine, outwit and where possible, humiliate and outshine the sitting President – their boss, who graciously… and to avoid the vindictive and entitled Clintons burning down the Democratic party after he won, handed Hillary an undeserved position in his admin that she’d never have been even remotely considered for otherwise…a position that though she was marginally mediocre in, immensely burnished her resume…and tremendously and undeservedly boosted, bolstered and enriched her, her husband, the Clinton foundation in every way…

And don’t even let’s forget how Hillary unceremoniously quit the SoS position, fully expecting and hoping that the President would lose re-election…as Bill’s chief of staff Douglas Band said he would be voting for Mitt Romney – and her dear friend Lynn de Rothschild recruited, funded and organized for Jon Huntsman – a Republican – to run against President Obama in 2012…

All the Obamas have ever done is give and give and give to the Clintons…and all the Clintons have ever done is demand, demand, demand and demand more…and take and take and grab even more..

It’s like the Obamas are indentured servants who will never ever pay off a debt they never even owed to begin with…

        When does it end..

The President might enjoy parts of it…but we know that the First Lady doesn’t…we know what sacrifices she’s made for a political life she never wanted and rightly does not see as noble…we all know how she had to come to terms with what she needed to do to support and help her husband on his campaigns…we all know how happy she was that the President had run his last campaign…

And even if FLOTUS campaigns, but doesn’t do everything the Clintons want her to do including sell her children and her soul…they and their supporters will never be satisfied…

Sitting and former Presidents and First Ladies don’t typically campaign in the way the Clintons and their supporters are now insisting that the Obamas do…sure, they host a couple of high dollar fundraisers, make one or two appearances..and then step off to the side…

They conserve their capital – and their dignity as leaders of the nation…

But the Clintons want the Obamas to sacrifice everything for them…

It only makes me resent and despise the Clintons even more…

No sitting white President and First Lady could be pushed and jerked around like this and held perpetually ransom in this way…and it’s wrong and insulting..

Hatch wants us to ‘be nice’ to flailing, amateurish Trump
    06/08/16 10:02 AM
    By Steve Benen

Just about every Republican in Congress has been asked for some kind of reaction to Donald Trump’s latest racial controversy, and there’s been no shortage of colorful responses. But my personal favorite came by way of Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), described yesterday as an “increasingly enthusiastic Trump supporter,” who assured the public that there’s no cause for alarm.

“My experience with Donald Trump is he doesn’t have a prejudiced bone in his body,” Hatch said.

Perhaps the senator was thinking of a different person named Donald Trump.

Hatch went on to make an appeal on behalf of his party’s presumptive presidential nominee. The L.A. Times reported:

Another top Republican, Sen. Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, sounded a similar plea for leniency, saying a person as new to politics as Trump will say “stupid” and “outrageous” things.

“Be nice to him,” said Hatch. “He’s a poor first-time candidate

    .”

The GOP senator may have been trying to be funny, but it prompted the Huffington Post’s Igor Bobic to note, “Donald Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee, but members of his own party keep excusing his outrageous behavior as if he’s a pre-adolescent whose cognitive functions and sense of right and wrong haven’t fully developed.”

The key detail Ron Johnson hopes Wisconsin won’t remember
    06/08/16 10:40 AM
    By Steve Benen
Sen. Ron Johnson (R), running for re-election in Wisconsin, is one of Congress’ more vulnerable Republican incumbents, and polls show him trailing the Democrat he defeated in 2010, former Sen. Russ Feingold (D). Johnson, however, is flush with cash, which he’s eager to put to use.

And while not every campaign commercial deserves special attention and scrutiny, the Wisconsin senator’s newest spot is amazing for an important reason. Roll Call reported:

Republican Ron Johnson is a first-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin. The voters back home wouldn’t know it watching his re-election campaign’s first TV ad.

Even for a time when incumbent lawmakers try to distance themselves from their job titles, Johnson’s new ad takes that approach to an extreme. It doesn’t once mention his work as a lawmaker or even identify him as a senator.

That may sound like an exaggeration, but it’s not. The Republican’s re-election ad is carefully designed to give viewers the impression that he’s not already a senator.

In the spot, Johnson makes literally no references to any work he’s done while in office; he doesn’t identify himself as a senator; he doesn’t note any Senate achievements; and he doesn’t mention that he’s running for re-election.

      From the linked article:

We should heed closely what Donald Trump has been saying about U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel of San Diego—perhaps more so than anything else he has said or done to date. The prospect that a President Trump might defy the judiciary and the rule of law, together with his vows to violate international treaties and his disrespect for domestic laws, may make him the most dangerous candidate in American history.

There are so many things to deplore about Trump’s recent attacks on Curiel it is difficult to know where to begin. Trump has asserted that Curiel is unfit to hear two lawsuits against the now-defunct Trump University because “he’s a Mexican” (false—Curiel was born in Indiana)—and thus probably biased against Trump’s plan to “build a wall” on the Mexican border. Trump has also suggested that any judge of Mexican, or of Muslim, heritage would be biased against him. He has declared that he’s “getting railroaded” by a “rigged” legal system and suggested he “will come back in November” to change things.

This is racism and ethnic and religious bias. It is a deplorable elevation of Trump’s raw financial and political self-interest above the law and the national interest. But mostly what we should deplore—and fear—is this: Such a brazen presidential attack on the rule of law, by a man of such a belligerent temperament and crude sensibility, could portend defiance of court orders by a President Trump.

And that in turn would be a long step toward authoritarian rule.

We need to pay close attention. Let’s also not forget that whomever is elected president will probably be choosing Supreme Court Justices as the vacancies occur. Trump is not the person I want doing the choosing. This is serious.
