Kushner told ‘Morning Joe’ hosts to apologize to Trump or tabloid story would run: report
BY JOHN BOWDEN – 06/30/17 01:34 PM EDT
President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, told “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski they would need to apologize to Trump in order to avoid the National Enquirer publishing a story about their relationship, New York Magazine reported Friday.
The magazine reports that Kushner texted with Scarborough about the tabloid story before it ran in mid-April. Kushner said the story could be stopped if Scarborough and his co-host, who are engaged to be married, apologized to Trump for their negative coverage of his first months in the White House.
After Scarborough refused, the National Enquirer ran a story on June 5 titled “Joe & Mika: TV Coupleβs Sleazy Cheating Scandal.”

How long, Lord?

Trump abandons the pretense surrounding his voting βcommissionβ
06/30/17 12:40 PMβUPDATED 06/30/17 01:02 PM
By Steve Benen
Nearly a decade ago, the Bush/Cheney administration thought itβd be a good idea to give Hans von Spakovsky a six-year term on the Federal Elections Commission. Slateβs Dahlia Lithwick offered some advice to senators weighing his nomination: βDo not vote for this guy.β
Lithwickβs piece was a brutal takedown, making the case that von Spakovsky βwas one of the generals in a years-long campaign to use what we now know to be bogus claims of runaway βvote fraudβ in America to suppress minority votes.β She added, β[E]ven a brief poke at his resume shows a man who has dedicated his professional career to a single objective: turning a partisan myth about voters who cast multiple ballots under fake names (always for Democrats!) into a national snipe hunt for vote fraud.β Hans von Spakovsky, Lithwick concluded, βsymbolizes contempt for what it means to cast a vote.β
Itβs against this backdrop that Donald Trump has decided Hans von Spakovsky should serve on the White Houseβs βelections integrityβ commission, which exists to find evidence of widespread voter fraud β a popular myth in far-right imaginations, thanks to people like Hans von Spakovsky. TPM reported this morning:

The CBO delivers more bad health care news to Senate Republicans
06/30/17 10:40 AM
By Steve Benen
When the Congressional Budget Office issued a devastating report on the Senate Republicansβ health care plan, it didnβt just disappoint GOP leaders, it also surprised them β because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) thought heβd gamed the system.
The idea was straightforward: McConnell knew the CBOβs score would review the impact of the health care legislation over the next 10 years. With this in mind, to make the results look better, the Republican blueprint was designed to delay some of its harshest elements until after the first decade. That way, when the initial CBO report went public, we wouldnβt see the impact of the bill in years 11, 12, 13, and so on.
We now know that didnβt work out especially well. The Republican plan is so regressive, the CBO found it would have brutal effects almost immediately if implemented. Yesterday, however, the non-partisan budget office dropped the other shoe, issuing a report on what would happen in the second decade. The HuffPostβs Jonathan Cohn explained:
Where is the compassion?

Trump Plans Giveaways to His Buddy Putin
by Nancy LeTourneau
June 30, 2017 8:10 AM
………………………….
Not only is Trump ignoring the cyber threat, he is considering the possibility of returning two diplomatic compounds to Putinβthe very ones that Obama ordered vacated in response to Russiaβs interference in the election.
Trying to follow any logic associated with Trumpβs behavior is a foolβs errand. He just went on a Twitter tirade last week about how Obama did nothing in response to Russiaβs behavior. Simultaneously, he was asking his national security staff to propose βdeliverablesβ he could give to Putin, including the reversal of what Obama did in response to Russiaβs behavior. This is precisely why I never assume that there is any method to the madness of his Twitter tirades. They are simply the rantings of someone with no impulse control.
The overall idea that this president is looking for deliverables to propose in his first meeting with Putin, while asking nothing in return, is remarkable. The two words that come to mind to describe it are (1) stupid and (2) guilty.
A competent strategist would find a way to at least appear neutral about Russia (if not a bit aggressive) in order to diminish the appearance of collusion. Trump isnβt even trying. Thatβs what makes him look guilty. During a time when we know that Russia mounted their most aggressive attempt to undermine our democracy, this president is considering giveaways to the guy who orchestrated it all. Why else would he do that unless Putin had something on him? I donβt know about you, but I canβt come up with any other justification.
If Trump set out to prove himself guilty, I canβt imagine how he could do a better job than this.
Quick Takes: CBO Score Was a Devastating Blow to McConnell
A roundup of news that caught my eye today.
by Nancy LeTourneau
* In their behind-the-scenes recap on what happened to McConnellβs health care bill, the Washington Post reports this:
Why did the scoring come as such a shock? Because McConnell thought he could use some complicated math to stall reductions in Medicaid spending so that the hits would come more dramatically outside the 10 year CBO scoring window. Obviously that trick didnβt work as well as McConnell had hoped. But Sen. Ron Wyden asked CBO to score the cuts for an additional 10 years to capture what would happen. That report was released today and things get even worse. By 2036 Medicaid would be reduced by a third.
Trumpβs voting commission makes an alarming request for data
06/30/17 08:40 AMβUPDATED 06/30/17 08:57 AM

onald Trump likes to believe in a problem that doesnβt exist: the imagined scourge of voter fraud. After the election, the president repeatedly argued that βmillionsβ of illegal votes were cast, in part because Trump was embarrassed his rival received millions more votes than he did, and in part to help lay the groundwork for a broader voter-suppression campaign.
To that end, the White House created a βcommissionβ in May to investigate voter fraud β a problem that only exists in any meaningful sense in the imaginations of far-right policymakers and their allies β and Trump tapped Kansasβ Kris Kobach, a voter-suppression pioneer, to help lead the ridiculous exercise.
The initiative lacked any sense of subtlety: the point, as the Washington Postβs Greg Sargent explained at the time, was to use the commission as a tool to rig the electoral process and help Republicans win more races. Slate described Kobachβs role in the endeavor as βterrifying.β
That was not hyperbolic. The Washington Post reported yesterday on the dubious commission, determined to solve a problem that doesnβt exist, requesting data it isnβt entitled to.
More Than 100 Federal Law Enforcement Agencies Not Reporting Hate Crimes To FBI
Written by FEDagent on 29 June 2017.
A startling number of federal law enforcement agencies are neglecting to submit statistics to the FBIβs national hate crimes database, according to ProPublica.
Maintained by the FBIβs Criminal Justice Information Services Division, this database is used to tabulate the number of alleged hate crimes occurring around the nation each year.
Not only does this cause a flaw in the database which is intended to serve as the nationβs most comprehensive source of hate crime information, but these actions also violate the 1988 Uniform Federal Crime Reporting Act which requires all U.S. government law enforcement agencies to send an array of crime data to the FBI.
The FBI identified at least 120 federal agencies that arenβt uploading information to the database, according to Amy Blasher, a unit chief at the CJIS division, an arm of the bureau that is overseeing the modernization of its information systems. Because of this, the Bureauβs annual tally of hate crime statistics does not include any offenses handled by federal law enforcement.
βWe truly donβt understand whatβs happening with crime in the U.S. without the federal component,β Blasher said in an interview.
In 2015, the database tracked more than 5,580 alleged hate crime incidents, including 257 targeting Muslims, an upward surge of 67 percent from the previous year.
Because these figures were largely comprised of information from state and local police departments, the true statistics for 2015 are likely much higher.

Trump Picks Voter ID Advocate for Election Fraud Panel
By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS
MAY 11, 2017
WASHINGTON β President Trump on Thursday named Kris W. Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state who has pressed for aggressive measures to crack down on undocumented immigrants, to a commission investigating vote fraud, following through on his unsubstantiated claim that millions of βillegalsβ voted for his Democratic rival and robbed him of victory in the national popular vote.
Mr. Kobach, who has championed the strictest voter identification laws in the country, will be the vice chairman of the commission, which will be led by Vice President Mike Pence and is expected to include about a dozen others, including state officials from both political parties, said Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the deputy White House press secretary.
Mr. Trump signed an executive order on Thursday creating the commission, which Ms. Sanders said would have a broad mandate to review policies and practices that affect Americansβ confidence in the integrity of federal elections. Marc E. Lotter, Mr. Penceβs spokesman, said that voter suppression would be among the topics studied by the commission, which he said would take a wide-ranging look at problems at the state and national levels. But the order makes no mention of suppression or voting restrictions, specifying only βimproperβ or βfraudulentβ registration and voting as issues to be explored.
Democrats and civil rights groups condemned the panel as a taxpayer-funded witch hunt, and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a legal request to the White House for records showing βconcrete evidenceβ of fraudulent voting that would warrant the creation of such a commission.
.
βPresident Trump is attempting to spread his own fake news about election integrity,β said Dale Ho, the director of the A.C.L.U.βs Voting Rights Project. βIf the Trump administration really cares about election integrity, it will divulge its supposed evidence before embarking
