Both of his books are great! “We Were Eight Years in Power” is powerful and thought provoking.

      • Liza says:

That’s good to know about TNC’s new book. I haven’t ordered it yet. But it’s good to see TNC getting so much recognition. He’s worked hard for it.

Liza, In his book, Ta-Nehisi Coates, republishes his eight Atlantic magazine articles written during Obama’s presidency by introducing each with fabulous, insightful essays.

Yes, it is good to see that he is receiving well-deserved recognition.

      • Liza says:

TNC was recently on Henry Louis Gates show about finding your roots. It turns out that on his mother’s side he has an ancestor, a woman who was freed when the guy who “owned’ her died. Plus he gave her something like 5 acres of his land in Virginia. So they were laughing because TNC wrote that essay about reparations for slavery.

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

      Thanks for that heads-up, Liza.

I want to listen to that program…I just found it, and so I will post it here in case anyone else wants to see it. I have it so that it will start at timestamp 9:41 with the beginning of the portion with Ta-Nehisi Coates and Henry Louis Gates:

In my opinion, that resolution has no chance of passing.

      • Liza says:

I agree. I guess it gives them something to talk about on Fox. Trump keeps bringing up “uranium” in his tweets, but it’s not going to be his “get out jail free” card.

In Asia, Trump confronts the decline of the American empire

    By Nic Robertson, CNN

The arc of nations and their empires is an imprecise thing.

President Trump will be reminded of this on his five-nation trip to Asia this coming week.

He will find it not just writ large in the power of economic growth across the region, but also in the trip’s timing: he arrives as the next super power in waiting, China has just stretched its wings, revealing a plumage capable one day of carrying it to great heights.

The Chinese Communist party conference in Beijing two weeks ago appeared to confer on President Xi, a power that could keep him in office long past expectations armed with a robust foreign policy that could allow China to significantly extend its global reach.

Trump appeared to take note, days later reminding Americans in a TV interview, “some people might call him the King of China” clarifying himself soon after “but he is called President,” apparently acknowledging Xi as a big leader, potentially with more power than he has.

There is no exit ramp for superpowers leaving center stage, and even if there was, Trump and quite rightly all Americans have no intention of taking it, abdicating most influential nation status.

With such influence comes a power to shape the world’s destiny in one’s own image and to one’s needs. History, even the stuff written last week, is full of generations fighting in that struggle to keep the top spot.

The Trump-GOP tax cuts mostly go to big business, followed by the super-rich. Less than a fifth goes to ordinary Americans. Josh Barro and David Cay Johnston join Lawrence O’Donnell to discuss.

    About the Mercer Spawn:

Rebekah wasn’t a regular presence at Trump Tower. She preferred working from her apartment in Trump Place, which was in fact six separate apartments that she and her husband had combined into an opulent property more than twice the size of Gracie Mansion. Still, it quickly became clear to her new colleagues that she wasn’t content just to chip in with ideas. She wanted decision-making power.

To her peers on the executive committee, she supported Alabama senator Jeff Sessions for attorney general and General Michael Flynn for national security adviser, but argued against naming Mitt Romney secretary of state. Her views on these matters were heard, according to several people on and close to the transition leadership. Rebekah was less successful when she lobbied hard for John Bolton, the famously hawkish former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, to be deputy secretary of state. And when Bolton was not named to any position, she made her displeasure known.

“I know it sounds sexist, but she was whiny as hell,” says one person who watched her operate. Almost everyone interviewed for this article, supporters and detractors alike, described her style as far more forceful than that of other powerful donors.

“I am shocked, shocked to find that my bankrolling of actual neo-Nazis has lead to public scrutiny and criticism of myself, so I’m going to distance myself from them and try and escape from the spotlight to go back to being a shadowy financier and let my daughter who seems to welcome attention take on the work of supporting a fascist white supremacist takeover of America.”
