Friday Open Thread | Lupita Nyong’o says Black Panther’s Wakanda is Africa if it had never been colonized

Cinematic smash hit Black Panther means many things to many people – including the film’s star Lupita Nyong’o, who said that the film’s re-imagining of Africa had the continent not been colonised is liberating.

The 34-year-old appeared on The View to discuss the new film with her co-star Danai Gurira, and when asked what it means to have African culture celebrated in such a way throughout the film, Lupita – who grew up in Kenya – came back with a profound response.

‘It’s so liberating. We come from a continent of great wealth, but a continent that has been assaulted and abuse very often. What colonialism did was it rewrote our history and our narrative, and our global narrative is one of poverty and strife, and so the wealth of the continent is very seldom seen on such a global scale.

‘So what this film does is it looks cool, it looks futuristic, but it’s drawing from ancient cultures. The diversity from this film is specifically from the continent.

‘Wakanda is special because it was never colonised, so what we can see there for all of us is a re-imagining what would have been possible had Africa been allowed to realise itself for itself. And that’s a beautiful place.’ The actress has also previously praised the portrayal gender equality in the film, telling Popsugar Australia: ‘we see women alongside men, and they’re powerful in their own right, but them assuming their power in no way diminishes the males in their lives’.

It really is the film that has everything – which is probably why it slipped past Star Wars: The Last Jedi earnings to make $242 million in four days, with the biggest Monday at the box office of all time (in the US), earning $40.2 million.

Lupita went on to speak about how Hollywood isn’t and has never been inclusive

‘The history of Hollywood didn’t look like me. The people who are writing and creative films historically did not look like me. [Actor] Sidney Poitier came and broke barriers back in the day and we’re still breaking barriers, that’s why we have a moment like this with Black Panther.

‘What me and Danai believe is that you work with what you have, and I’ve been given such an incredible platform with 12 Years A Slave and everything that followed it. ‘I want to work with what I have – I work with my sister Danai, I work with Ryan Coogler. I make my way with what I have and I try and make more of it without having to apologise that the status quo doesn’t necessarily respond to me.’

Lupita for president, please?

I read that an as yet unnamed current member of the H. of R. is mentioned in the latest indictment. I think the rep. is either Dana Rohrabacher or Devin Nunes. It would be great if both of them get caught up in Mueller’s investigation. I’ve noticed that both have gone eerily silent as Mueller keeps indicting more of their friends who love Russia and money as much as they do.

What were they talking about that day? Was it the ‘Queen for a Day’ proffer session?

Either way, Mueller shows again he will go to the mat if anyone lies to the FBI.

The Russia Investigation Is Moving Really Freaking Fast
    By Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux

The investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election took a significant step forward Friday, with the indictment of 13 Russian nationals and and three Russian organizations along with the announcement of a guilty plea from a California man for identity fraud.

The indictment and guilty plea are important because they are the first charges related to Russian attempts to sabotage the election. (The other indictment and pleas in the Mueller investigation have been in relation to other criminal activities.) The election interference is an activity long denounced by the U.S. intelligence community but routinely called into question by President Trump.

The indictment is also the latest sign that Mueller’s investigation is still moving quickly and ambitiously in pressing charges against those involved.

    From Silverman at BJ:

    Adam L Silverman says:

About the Van Der Zwaan indictment:

I think the overarching message, the meta-narrative if you will, of this indictment/plea deal is that before Mueller brings you before the grand jury or in for an interview, he knows the actual, factual, and correct answers to every question his team is going to ask or that an individual might provide as part of an answer even if it isn’t 100% germane to the question. He’s got the info from SIGINT and from HUMINT and from his teams interview work with others as part of the CI and criminal investigations.

This is signaling. Mueller knows if you’ve been naughty, he knows if you’ve been nice. He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so… As a result every interview, every grand jury appearance, every tweet, every statement from the White House press podium, every official White House statement, every off the cuff remark to the press pool or during a photo spray or to a phone gaggle, or in an interview with Haberman et al is a perjury trap. The President may not be smart enough to get the message. I’m honestly not sure if the Law Firm of Dumb, Stupid, and Incompetent (Dowd, Cobb, and Sekulow) are smart enough to get the message. I know the proxies – from Jr to Eric to Nines to Hannity to Carlson to Pirro to Finton to Kingston, etc, etc, etc – aren’t. McGahn’s, Bannon’s, Manafort’s, Kushner’s, Pence’s, and other’s attorneys may, but some of their clients are stupid and/or naive and may throw a wrench into their attorneys work.

Things look a lot different for Manafort now compared to 48 hours ago
    1 Gates flipped
2 New charges which can probably lead to state level charges of tax evasion
3 His wife owned at least one of the laundering companies
4 Daughter and her husband probably lied to a bank that they lived in a property of his when it was rented out

He is definitely going to jail. His whole family may be joining him.
And Manafort knows what Trump knows about the Trump tower collusion meeting

Manafort is a piece of work…but, according to the indictment, he’s now got his wife, daughter and son-in-law messed up. Whole family can now go to jail.
