The blood of America’s poor fuels a multibillion-dollar industry

Medicaid, housing subsidies, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—these are some of the things that make up the backbone of the U.S.’s social safety net. And the federal government, guided by President Trump’s proposed budget for 2019, is seeking to make deep cuts to all three of them

Yet while this threatens the government’s social safety net, one of a different kind continues to expand. Americans are flooding into the country’s blood-plasma donation centers in greater numbers than ever before, seeking to make up for low wages or small benefits checks, or even as their only source of cash income during a spell of extreme poverty. Their blood plasma—which historically has been collected disproportionately in the country’s poorest communities—is fueling a multibillion-dollar worldwide industry.

Blood plasma, being a vital component of certain medical treatments, is extremely valuable, and there’s not much standing in the way of American adults who want to make some money off of what’s in their veins—so long as they weigh more than 110 pounds and are in good health. A standard visit lasts 90 minutes and usually pays between $30 and $50. Unlike other countries that ban giving plasma more than once a week or limit the number of sales in a year out of concerns for donors’ health, the U.S. permits up to two plasma donations a week, every week.

Right. That’s why the Buzzfeed situation is so interesting. Cohen is suing Buzzfeed for libel against the President due to the publication of the Steele dossier. Cohen also has the NDA against Stormy Daniels. Buzzfeed has now subpoenaed Stormy to preserve any documents related to her affair with Trump presumably to rebut the libel suit. That subpoena gets her out of the NDA, and she can choose to publicly release any subpoenaed information. If it works, it’s quite clever

When I read this, it reminded me of the movie Spotlight. The attorney got the information on the record that the church was stonewalling against through using another discovery motion. I’m not an attorney, but, if anyone’s seen Spotlight, does my reasoning sound in the ballpark?

Trump administration dials back Shulkin firing rumors — for now
Veterans and GOP lawmakers circle the wagons to try to protect the embattled Veterans Affairs chief.

By LORRAINE WOELLERT and ARTHUR ALLEN 03/14/2018 07:17 PM EDT Updated 03/14/2018 09:53 PM EDT

President Donald Trump may be itching to fire him, but Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin has the support of GOP lawmakers and veterans, and the lack of a preferred successor may keep him at the agency’s helm at least for now.

Trump’s consternation with Shulkin bubbled over Monday, as he was meeting with Energy Secretary Rick Perry and planning Rex Tillerson’s ouster from the State Department. Trump didn’t offer Perry the job, nor did he ask if Perry wanted it, but the events prompted speculation that a major Cabinet shakeup was in the works.

Before Trump’s frustration with Shulkin spilled into the open, the mercurial president personally was pushing legislation that Shulkin had helped craft and the White House was publicly defending the VA secretary.

One reason: Veterans, a key bloc of political support for Trump, have circled the wagons to protect Shulkin, as have leading Republicans in Congress. And rumors that Shulkin mismanaged his security detail are premature at best, POLITICO has learned.

With the policy and political stakes high, administration officials and others on Wednesday were tamping down rumors of Shulkin’s imminent dismissal.

Mueller Subpoenas Trump Organization, Demanding Documents About Russia

WASHINGTON — The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has subpoenaed the Trump Organization to turn over documents, including some related to Russia, according to two people briefed on the matter. The order is the first known time that the special counsel demanded documents directly related to President Trump’s businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president.

The breadth of the subpoena was not clear, nor was it clear why Mr. Mueller issued it instead of simply asking for the documents from the company, an umbrella organization that oversees Mr. Trump’s business ventures. In the subpoena, delivered in recent weeks, Mr. Mueller ordered the Trump Organization to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating, the people said.

The subpoena is the latest indication that the investigation, which Mr. Trump’s lawyers once regularly assured him would be completed by now, will drag on for at least several more months. Word of the subpoena comes as Mr. Mueller appears to be broadening his investigation to examine the role foreign money may have played in funding Mr. Trump’s political activities. In recent weeks, Mr. Mueller’s investigators have questioned witnesses, including an adviser to the United Arab Emirates, about the flow of Emirati money into the United States.

Charleston Shooter Dylann Roof’s Sister Morgan to Protesting Classmates: ‘I Hope…Y’All Get Shot’

Morgan Roof, the younger sister of the Charleston shooter Dylann Roof, was arrested after taking two weapons to school and posting to Snapchat that she hoped students protesting against gun violence in a nationwide walkout “get shot.”

Roof, 18, showed up at A.C. Flora High School in South Carolina with a knife, pepper spray, and marijuana. She faces weapons and drugs charges. A judge released Roof on a $5,000 bond but ordered her to stay away from her school.

Though she faced no charges relating to her Snapchat post, it did cause alarm, reported WIS-TV.

In her post, Roof wrote: “Your walking out for the allowed time of 17 min, they are letting you do this, nothing is gonna change what tf you think it’s gonna do? I hope it’s a trap and y’all get shot we know it’s fixing to be nothing but black people walkin out anyway…No offense ofc buuut.”

Elizabeth Holmes raised hundreds of millions of dollars from investors on the promise that her medical-testing startup Theranos Inc. would change medicine with a single drop of blood. On Wednesday, securities regulators called her a fraud and forced her to give up the company she built.

The lawsuit and settlement announced Wednesday by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission detailed how Holmes and her chief deputy lied for years about their technology, snookered the media, and used the publicity to get investors to hand more than $700 million to keep the closely held company afloat.

Trump’s Dangerous Allegiance Threatens Every One of Us
    By Josh Marshall | March 14, 2018 5:43 pm

    ………………..
The key danger we currently face is not Russia itself. It is the success of the 2016 campaign. I’m not talking about the fact that President Trump won the election. We don’t know the impact of the disruption campaign and in any case, that fact is in the past. I’m talking about the fact that Russia and Vladimir Putin clearly exercise some control over Donald Trump. Now. I know that is a dramatic accusation. Perhaps to some, it will appear hyperbolic. But after a year I think there’s no longer any way to doubt that this is true. On every front, he resists taking punitive measures against Russia, even when mandated to do so by US laws. He goes to great lengths never to criticize Russia. In the exceedingly rare cases in which he does, it is in prepared statements written for him by others. In other words, when it’s not really him. He finds himself spilling highly classified intelligence to top Russian government officials. He seeks out private meetings with Vladimir Putin where no other Americans are present. The latest instance with this chemical weapons assassination attempt in the UK is just the latest example. Some members of the administration have been outspoken. But President Trump has done his very best to keep his criticism to an absolute minimum, always leaving open the possibility that others are involved. It’s just like he does when he’s asked about Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign.

I don’t know why this is. Does Vladimir Putin have something on Trump? Is there money involved? Is it simply that in the nature of things Putin can expose the collusion that took place during the 2016 campaign. Perhaps it’s just an on-going arrangement freely engage in on both sides. Of course, we can speculate that President Trump simply has a profound admiration and attraction to Putin which makes any criticism impossible. But that would if anything be worse than kompromat and bribes. Something is clearly wrong, very wrong. The President is not able to act in America’s interest with regard to Russia. And that unexplained subservience sends shockwaves across numerous critical US alliances, particularly in Europe

Trump; Pennsylvania Dem won because he’s ‘like Trump’
    03/15/18 08:40 AM—UPDATED 03/15/18 08:45 AM
    By Steve Benen
Ahead of this week’s congressional special election in Pennsylvania, Republicans insisted that Conor Lamb (D) was a liberal Democrat who had no business representing a conservative district that backed Donald Trump by a 20-point margin. After Lamb’s apparent victory, GOP leaders decided they no longer agreed with their own talking points.

The Republican National Committee insisted that Lamb “essentially” ran as a Republican. A White House spokesperson said the Democrat “really embraced the president’s policies and his vision.”

As The Atlantic reported, Trump went a little further while reflecting on the race yesterday at a private fundraiser in Missouri.

“The young man last night that ran, he said, ‘Oh, I’m like Trump. Second Amendment, everything. I love the tax cuts, everything.’ He ran on that basis,” Trump said. “He ran on a campaign that said very nice things about me. I said, ‘Is he a Republican? He sounds like a Republican to me.’”

Look, I realize that the president, by his own admission, occasionally makes stuff up, but the GOP spin on Pennsylvania’s special election is getting more than a little silly.

That this crook is privy to all of America’s most sensitive secrets, is insane..

And he’s using this information to target his perceived ‘enemies’ .. and to preemptively try to skirt laws.. I’ve always worried that out of spite, jealousy, rage or desperation he could do grievous damage to others, utilizing his undeserved access …

His oldest son’s wife just filed for divorce last night, and as much as I really hate marriages and families breaking up ..I just don’t know what to believe about this…

She seems to have actually been rather removed from much of it all…. and she’s certainly not been as horrid as Eric’s wife …who proudly instigates and peddles a lot of hateful stuff with her fellow ‘proud deplorables’ on social media…and uses her old workplace Inside Edition and that awful Deborah Norville, to push their family’s white-washed propaganda..

But I can’t help but wonder – with Mueller closing in – if this isn’t mostly a preemptive move to secure assets ..have it signed over to her to protect whatever they have..
