LIVE: Brett Kavanaugh & Christine Blasey Ford Testify Before Senate Judiciary

The Senate hearings to confirm President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will continue Thursday morning, but with a headline-grabbing twist: the woman who first accused the jurist of sexual misconduct will publicly testify.

Christine Blasey Ford, a research psychologist from California, accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault at a house party three decades ago, when he was a student at Georgetown Prep.

Days later, a second accuser, Deborah Ramirez, accused Kavanaugh of exposing himself to her at a party. And on Wednesday, another accuser, Julie Swetnick submitted a sworn statement accusing Kavanaugh of having been present during her “gang rape” at a party in 1982.

Kavanaugh has denied all of the claims, calling the latest one “from The Twilight Zone.” Both he and Ford will testify on the matter Thursday.

The session will begin at 10 a.m. ET.

      Analysis finds 290 hours of ‘private’ meetings on Chao’s calendar

      Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has spent more than 290 hours in meetings labeled “private” during her first 14 months in the position, according to a new Politico analysis of her calendars.

      Documents obtained by Politico through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) indicate Chao has spent a large amount of time in “private” meetings, which have usually taken place on Fridays after lunchtime.

      One Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesperson told Politico some of the “private” time was spent traveling, while other blocks involved appointments ranging “from doctor’s appointments to meeting with personal friends to tending to personal needs or regularly sharing meals with her husband.”

      Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

But for her decision to come out about Brett Kavanaugh and to remake herself as a California surfing mom, she is the archetypal Republican voter: A wealthy, white suburban woman, married, with children. Her parents are Republicans. Her father plays golf with Brett Kavanaugh’s dad at Burning Tree. Her parents have been noticeably silent — stonily so, with no letter of support, only the most begrudging words. It chilled me to read what her father, Ralph Blasey, wrung from himself to offer the Washington Post, in the conditional tense: “I think all of the Blasey family would support her. I think her record stands for itself. Her schooling, her jobs, and so on.” Then he hung up. A second call yielded this hypothetical: “I think any father would have love for his daughter.”

    Women like Ford are the ones who have mostly raced to protect Brett Kavanaugh — not to mention Donald Trump — because admitting that there was something rotten in their culture would implicate them, too. What makes Ford different, it seems, is that she is ready to tell the truth that even the white woman on the pedestal is ultimately doomed to subordination, and if she gets in the way of the plan or breaks the code — well, she’s on her own.

    A few days ago I just told my brother and my oldest boy about what happened to me during high school. It was during exams. I had only one test to take and had to stay at the school and wait the rest of the day for the bus. After test was over, I was sitting outside on a bench, waiting until bus time and this boy came over and sit down beside me and then he put his hand on my leg and then tried to put his hand even further up my dress. I had to fight and was yelling for him to stop. He finally did stop and left. I was shaken. School officials were inside. I didn’t tell them anything. I was so humiliated, embarrassed and scared they’d blame me. I never told them or my mother. When I got home I went to bed, didn’t eat. I tried to wish it away. He had a girlfriend too. She was a twin. And she was so in love with that filthy scum. Years after high school I heard someone killed him. If I am not mistaken I believe the person told me he was stabbed to death.

      When I was about 9 or 10, during one long summer holiday, my friend, the daughter of family friends who lived down the road from us, broke her arm and had to have it in a cast.

      She was about a year or two older than I was, and she had an older brother who was about 15..

      My mum let me go visit with her one afternoon …and we hung out in her reading comic books, playing board games and eating candy – for some reason even though she had serious dental issues, her mum still over-indulged her sweet tooth – and she had a stash..

      At some point as I was thumbing through a book, she up and disappeared …After a little while, I was a bit uneasy being all alone, and so decided to go find her – or go where she was …

      I come from a family where even as kids, we didn’t do sleepovers – my mum never allowed it, and we didn’t eat or entertain in our bedrooms .. we played and entertained friends in our dedicated playroom which was just off the living room, and had our toys, bookshelves filled with books we’d already read, baskets full of comics we swapped with friends, and a couple of mini tables and chairs set up for snacks and tea parties..

      I was not comfortable left alone, so I sat at the foot of her bed, and started buckling my shoes..

      Next thing I know, her older brother walks into the room… didn’t say a word, just sat down by me…I was still trying to buckle the one shoe..

      He grabbed my face, turned it to him, and started to kiss me.. I almost gagged… I used all my strength to push him away and I ran out of the room with just one shoe on..

      I found my friend in the living room with a bag of toffee candy munching away..

      My heart was beating so hard you could hear it from a mile… I was shocked, confused and terrified …if she noticed, she pretended not to and didn’t say a word…I told her I needed her to come back with me to her room to get my other shoe because I had to go home.. she asked why I was leaving… I told her my mum needed me home at a certain time…

      Her brother came out their living room acting like nothing happened… I dashed into the room, grabbed my other shoe, and ran all the way home…

      I never went to their home again… never told my parents what happened… to this day…

      I only told my sister when we were in college… and we talked about it again last week when this Dr. Ford incident came up.. she’s still shocked..

      To this day, only my sister knows …and not even my all-seeing, all-knowing mum knows still..

        And I can still smell his awful scent …still vividly see her room, even remember her arm in the cast …and can describe her sleeveless cotton summer dress…and the type of candy..

        I don’t remember what their living room looked like – or which direction or what part of the house relative to her bedroom, it was… I don’t remember what her brother was wearing, even though I can still smell him… and I can still see his face..

        I had a second cousin who used to feel up all the girl nieces and cousins whenever the opportunity arose. He was a full grown man (married, no children) and the girls were high school age except for me, I was in grammar school. It only happened to me one time and I didn’t tell anybody.

        However….

        One summer night when I was about 11 years old I was staying with my favorite aunt, the mother-in-law of the guy I’m talking about. Some of the other relatives were there including one of my cousins, a young girl who was about 14 at the time.

        I have absolutely no memory of what triggered this, but the adult relatives got into a huge fight. It was like they exploded with pent up anger and they were arguing with each other over every grievance imaginable. I had never seen anything like it and I was kind of cowering until my cousin, the young girl, accused my other cousin (the married guy) of sexually molesting her. Then all hell broke loose.

        I should mention that he was not there that night but his wife was there. And I have no memory of how this ended that night. I’m sure it was bad.

        My two older sisters were in high school and the next day they both had to talk to my cousin’s wife who wanted to know if her husband had ever touched them in a sexual manner. They both denied that this ever happened.

        A couple of weeks later my aunt had a massive stroke. She never recovered.

        Decades later, maybe just about ten years ago, one of my sisters told me that the allegations were true. She had been afraid to say anything.

        Sad, sad stories. I truly believe we all have them.

      While pursuing her Ph.D. in Politics at the University of Virginia, Kathryn Sack submitted FOIA requests to the Department of Defense.1 Sack sought Department reports about its use of polygraph examinations, as well as related documents about those examinations. Sack told the Department that she intended to use the requested information for her dissertation on polygraph bias.

      Sack asked the Department to categorize her as an educational-institution requester. Under FOIA, government agencies may charge fees for processing FOIA requests. But FOIA limits the fees that an agency may charge for processing FOIA requests made by an educational institution.

      For one batch of Sack’s requests, the Department of Defense refused to categorize Sack as an educational-institution requester and required her to pay about $900 to conduct the search. For another batch of Sack’s requests, the Department conducted a search and reviewed responsive documents, but the Department informed Sack that the documents were exempt from disclosure under FOIA Exemption (7)(E).

      Sack filed a lawsuit challenging the Department’s handling of those two batches of requests. As to the first, Sack asked to be categorized as an educational-institution requester so that she would have to pay only the reduced fees. As to the other, Sack challenged the Department’s withholding of the requested polygraph reports. The District Court granted summary judgment to the Department of Defense. The Court concluded that Sack was not an educational-institution requester entitled to reduced fees. And the Court ruled that the polygraph reports were exempt under FOIA Exemption 7(E).

No one ever cleaned it up. It was disgusting. It wasn’t incidental. It wasn’t, ‘Oh, this weekend someone puked in the bathroom.’ People were constantly puking in the bathroom. Constantly.”

    I just realized something about Kavanaugh when this 5th accuser’s story was revealed: he’s been preying on conservative women because he knows he can ruin their careers if they try to accuse him. That’s why the first few accusations are from high school and college — there’s not much he can do against a tenured college professor in California.

    LA Times: Here’s what sexual assault experts say you should keep in mind as Christine Blasey Ford shares her story.

    • Roughly 31% of sexual assaults are reported to police. That number is lower — 28% — among the elderly, and even lower — 20% — among college-age women.

    • In a survey of sexual violence victims who did not report their assault, 20% cited a fear of retaliation and 13% said they did not believe the police would do anything to help. Another 13% considered the assault “a personal matter,” and 7% said they did not want to get the perpetrator in trouble.

    • Those who stay quiet because they don’t expect action from law enforcement officers may be justified in their thinking. Out of 1,000 sexual assaults, about 310 are reported to police. Among those reports, 57 will lead to an arrest and 11 cases will be referred to prosecutors. Seven of them will lead to a felony conviction and six will lead to incarcerations.

    • Men typically assume that about half of reported sexual assaults are unfounded or completely fabricated, said Kevin Swartout, a Georgia State University psychologist who studies the factors that predispose men to commit these crimes. However, researchers estimate that only 2% to 7% of sexual assault reports are untrue, he said. “It is very rare,” he said. “But it does happen.”
