Watch Live: Elijah Cummings Funeral Service

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings will be laid to rest in his hometown of Baltimore Friday morning.

Cummings’ family and political dignitaries are scheduled to speak at his funeral, which is being held at the New Psalmist Baptist Church at 10 a.m.

Speakers are set to include former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Bishop Walter S. Thomas Jr. of New Psalmist will deliver the eulogy to honor the icon.

Cummings’ funeral comes a day after a ceremony in Washington, where he became the first African American lawmaker to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol.

@Journo_Christal People who find cheering at a funeral weird have never been to a black funeral before. Black people view funerals as “Homegoing celebrations.” Yes they’re sad, but they’re also celebratory.

I remember going to a funeral for black student with one of my Caucasian co-workers. She was really surprised to hear crying, shouting, and celebrating the life of the deceased at that funeral. She said the only funerals she’d ever been to were ones in which everyone remained silent while the minister gave the eulogy. I had to explain to her that black folks view dying as a home-going celebration, and although we’re sad to lose the person in our lives, we believe we’ll see them again. She was surprised.

Wait a minute. Elijah Cummings’s middle name was Eugene? Which would make him E.E. Cummings?

    That is too cool.

President Obama’s eulogy was poignant and beautiful. He always has the right words and tone.

    God how I miss him.

Bill Clinton doesn’t have the old pipes, but he still knows the tune. Barack, of course, remains the whole damn symphony. Please use these voice elsewhere than funerals these days.

Wow the funeral of the 1st African American politician to lie in repose in the capital doesn’t warrant a full broadcast. Both MSNBC & CNN cut away when Kweisi Mfume began to speak. No network media is carrying it, wow. Just wow.

  6. Our REAL President is about to speak…..President Barack Obama. #ElijahCummingsfuneral

  7. Beautiful honor for Rep Elijah Cummings. Glory to God!
