    Otis Redding wrote Respect and it’s really about some guy who works all day, gives everything to his woman, and all he wants in return is a little respect when he gets home.

    So what did this mean to Redding? Did his woman disrespect him or what? It’s not clear.

    Then Ms. Franklin covers Respect and it becomes a feminist anthem. And somehow the lyrics work better for a woman demanding respect from her man, or just simply demanding respect. No explanation needed. Redding loved Aretha’s version.
