2. She’s earned the endorsement of most of the local Black leaders and clergy
3. Obama praised her and it’s been touted in ads
4. Stevens has been explicitly pursuing their vote since at least September. El Sayed did little until recently when it became a two person race and it was clear he needed Black voters to win
5. An “insurgent” candidate going after the “establishment” sounds good to certain demographics. For Black people — particularly older ones who tend to be the ones that vote — that sounds risky and they are more pragmatic. That’s why they didn’t start supporting Obama until after he’d won Iowa and even then it was still very competitive between he and Hillary in 2008

During 2016, a lot of the Bernie supporters basically accused Black voters of false consciousness, implying/sometimes just stating explicitly that the Black vote was ill-informed politically and therefore easily manipulated.

I lived in the South in 2016 and I was a Bernie supporter. The Black voters I met in Hillary’s camp were infinitely more knowledgable and savvy than I was. *I* was attracted fanciful rhetoric from the shiny new thing. *I* was low-info. Black voters wanted receipts and truth.

Haley Steven’s is doing well for many reasons but one sticks out. Her strategy points to domestic issues NOT foreign policy that is either distant from the plurality of voters OR lower in their scale of needs. “Noun, verb, AIPAC” will not supersede the crisis of Trump.
