Yowza…just had a look over there, and at Tim Wise’s piece (he’s absolutely livid). While I’m extremely glad that there are so many people ready to defend African Americans against victim-blaming, they’re missing the mark.
1. Like with FLO’s speech, context is everything. Politico would like our entire takeaway to be that PBO thinks that “black men should stop making excuses…” but that’s because Politico’s racist. The President’s speech definitely can’t be reduced to that from any fair vantage point.
2. For the people who think that PBO only makes morality speeches to black audiences (and most commencement addresses are morality speeches and calls for the graduates to heal the world), they’re forgetting that one of the President’s most famous speeches was primarily a morality lecture to white people about racism in response to the Rev Wright controversy (in which he also called out his own white fam).
They’re reacting to the media spin IMO.

The constant grooming white people require (well intentioned or not) is exhausting. They need to be comfortable at all times. If they don’t get it or can’t put their imprint on it, well….it’s a problem. It’s tiring.
The Morehouse speech was for black people. The setting, the cadence, the ideas were for black people. PBO said the same things that GENERATIONS of black leaders have from Frederick Douglas, Fannie Lou Hamer, etc. The memory of that knowledge is in our bones..in our DNA passed from generation to generation.
The mother fucking special thing is…it was said today by the mother fucking President of the United States of America. Its an African-American dog whistle that they cannot hear…even Tim Wise.
Deal with it white people, sometimes shit is said that is just over your heads.

How do people think we went from picking cotton to the WH in less than 200 years? Demanding excellence from elite minds even in the face of exploitation, vicious racism, and adversity. This is really well said; PBO is definitely just continuing in a very long tradition.
LOL I personally stayed away from white blogging sights and PBO’s Morehouse address. Sorry, butr these folks don’t speak for me or POTUS. They can NOT. And like I said on the video thread, PBO didn’t say anything black folks don’t discuss in barber hsops, churches and beauty salons and with their families.
GN’s spot on We know he was addressing blacks. DUH!!! Look who at the faces of the graduates.
SOME White folks; they just can’t stand it, if it’s NOT ALL ABOUT THEM.
Tim Wise’s piece is another example of him trying to hold on to his HUSTLE; to his status as the premier expert on white privilege, because; who better than Time Wise to write that tripe about POTUS and his address to BLACK MALE STUDENTS.
You see, it would have been perfectly ol had Tim Wise rolled up in Morehouse and told those black male students the same things POTUS told them. NOT! And that’s why he’s MAD. NOW THAT’S WHITE PRIVILEGE.
Obama gives commencement address at Morehouse
By James Salzer and Angela Tuck
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After a rough week in Washington, President Barack Obama came to rainy Atlanta on Sunday to be with a friendlier crowd, becoming the first sitting president to give the commencement address at Morehouse College.
The president later attended a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at the home of Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
The commencement crowd roared when the president made his entrance, about an hour after heavy rains had stopped.
Obama urged graduates to think of more than their careers. He told them to be good role models and inspire others, particularly members of the African-American community who need a helping hand.
“Members of the class of 2013, you are the heirs to a great legacy,” he said. “You have within you the same courage; the same strength; the same resolve as the men who came before you.
“That’s what being a Morehouse Man is all about,” the president said. “That’s what being an American is about. Success may not come quickly or easily. But if you strive to do what’s right; if you work harder and dream bigger; if you set an example in your own lives and do your part to help meet the challenges of our time, then I am confident that, together, we will continue the never-ending task of perfecting our union.”
…………………………………
Britney Ferguson arrived early to get a front row seat in the family and friends area. The 20-year-old from Hayward, Calif., came to see her brother, Ian Minerve Jr., graduate from Morehouse with his business degree.
“It’s really, really amazing to be here. I’m so happy for my brother,” said the California State University East Bay student. “This inspires me to keep working hard in school so I can graduate and feel success.”
Ferguson’s father got to campus at 3:30 a.m. to save seats for the rest of the family.
“Seeing Obama makes it worth it sitting here in the rain,” she said.
Her cousin, Sally Seow, from Trinidad, is attending her first American graduation.
“Having Obama here makes it that much more special,” she said.
Sean K. Daughtry of Boston, a Morehouse graduate, was in Atlanta to celebrate his 20th class reunion.
“It is a great honor to have our president here and an even greater honor that we are bestowing upon him an honorary degree,” he said. “So we will have a Morehouse man as president.”

You know Dr. King, Malcolm, and a host of our ancestors were present during this ceremony. Our president was and is fully ANNOINTED.
The pic of the graduate crying sure is making the rounds.
