Steely Dan is an American rock band; its core members are Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The band’s popularity peaked in the late 1970s, with the release of seven albums blending elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop.[1] Rolling Stone magazine has called them “the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies.”[2]
The band’s music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies played by Becker and Fagen along with a revolving cast of rock and pop studio musicians.[1] Steely Dan’s “cerebral, wry and eccentric”[1] lyrics, often filled with sharp sarcasm, touch upon such themes as drugs, love affairs,[3][4][5][6] crime,[6] and their true-to-life “contempt of west coast hippies.”[5][6] The pair are well-known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio,[7][8] with one notable example being that Becker and Fagen used at least 42 different studio musicians, 11 engineers, and took over a year to record the tracks that resulted in 1980’s Gaucho — an album that contains only seven songs.[9]

A person familiar with the president’s schedule has told NPR’s Scott Horsely that President Obama will travel to Tucson on Wednesday to pay tribute to the victims of Saturday’s shooting rampage. Details of his trip are still sparse.
Earlier today, the president, First Lady Michelle Obama and hundreds of White House staffers observed a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House. The president also signed a proclamation asking that flags be flown at half staff to honor the victims of Saturday’s shootings.
Six people were killed and more than a dozen wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a Tucson Safeway. Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head and remains in critical condition.
Obama’s trip follows in the long tradition of presidents leading the nation in mourning over great tragedies. Horsely reports Obama has been reaching out to the victims’ family members and Arizona’s political leaders in preparation for a memorial. In his address to the country, the president said he hoped this tragedy would bring Americans together.

Ted Williams Not Equipped to Deal With Pressures of Instant Fame, Experts Say

Ted Williams’ journey from homelessness to the “Today Show” made the man with the golden voice a media darling last week. But when the dust settles, what will likely be left is a man unequipped to deal with the pressure of fame and instant fortune, experts say.
“Williams is the latest pawn in the media game which celebrates what is hot at the moment and leaves it behind as soon as the next ‘it’ thing comes along,” says Cooper Lawrence, author of “The Cult of Celebrity.” “The job of the media was to use Williams to get eyes on their shows, without regard for how it affects him down the road.”
Just one example that the Williams’ story hasn’t been a true-life narrative unfolding in real time was the battle last week between NBC’s “Today Show” and CBS’s “The Early Show” that kept Williams from reuniting with his 90-year-old mother for 24 hours as the networks tried to get the reunion live on film.

Man Arrested For Allegedly Threatening To Set Fire To Senate Dem’s Office, Shoot Staff

DENVER — A Colorado man is accused of threatening to set fire around Sen. Michael Bennet’s office and shoot members of his staff, prompting authorities to step up patrols around the senator’s home and office.
John Troy Davis, 44, faces a charge of assault on a federal employee. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The alleged threat happened two days before six people died in Saturday’s shootings at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, Ariz., where U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was meeting constituents. A federal judge, a congressional aide and a young girl were among the six killed, while Giffords and 13 others were wounded.
Jeff Dorschner of the U.S. attorney’s office said there were no indications that the cases were related.
FBI agent Jonathan D. Grusing said in an arrest affidavit that Davis called Bennet’s office Thursday to complain about his Social Security benefits. At one point, according to the document, Davis told a Bennet staffer that he is schizophrenic and needs help and that he “may go to terrorism.”

Tom DeLay Is Probably Not Going to Get Life in Prison
Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay was convicted Wednesday of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The money laundering charge carries a 99-year maximum sentence — in other words, life in prison.
But don’t expect DeLay to be sent away for the rest of his days.
“It is absolutely impossible he would get anywhere near life,” Philip Hilder, a Texas criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor, told the Associated Press. “It would be a period of a few years, if he gets prison.”
Prosecutors told the Austin-American Statesman on Wednesday that they had not decided whether to ask Judge Pat Priest, who will sentence DeLay, for a prison sentence. Other potential punishments include probation and fines.

ABC’s Bob Woodruff Offers Experience, Hope To Giffords In Recovering From Brain Injury

ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff, who suffered a traumatic brain injury on assignment in Iraq five years ago, is offering his unique perspective to the family of Gabrielle Giffords. “There is hope,” Woodruff writes in a “Reporter’s Notebook” piece on the ABC News website.
Woodruff, who’d just been named a co-anchor of ABC’s World News, was severely injured by the explosion of an IED.
In telling his story online and on Good Morning America, Woodruff notes just how many similarities exist between his injury and Rep. Giffords’, both suffering trauma on the left side of their brain, and both being fortunate enough to get treatment within 40 minutes:
Like the doctors who saved me almost five years ago, her surgeons knew exactly what to do. Her brain was swelling just like mine. They removed part of her skull on the left side of her head almost exactly like mine, and she is now in a drug-induced coma so that her brain can recover. For me it was 36 days before I woke up.

WASHINGTON — On the eve of the shooting that left her critically injured, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) wrote an email to Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R), asking his help in toning down the partisan rhetoric in the country.
“After you get settled, I would love to talk about what we can do to promote centrism and moderation,” wrote Giffords. “I am one of only 12 Dems left in a GOP district (the only woman) and think that we need to figure out how to tone our rhetoric and partisanship down.”
Grayson recently announced that he would be stepping down from his public position to become director of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Giffords’s note was a congratulatory email in response to the news.

Eliot Spitzer may soon need another leading lady: CNN executives are rumored to be considering replacing columnist Kathleen Parker, the conservative half of the network’s prime-time show ‘Parker Spitzer,’ because they are unhappy with the debate. “We still think that form of show is the right idea for a network like CNN at 8 o’clock, but the execution has not been what we have been happy with up to date,” chief executive Phil Kent said. Kent said they are working to improve the show, which he said is already “smart.” CNN has been ailed by plummeting ratings, and ‘Parker Spitzer’ was the first part of its turnaround strategy. But the show only averages 468,000 viewers, while in the same time slot Fox News gets 2.6 million viewers and MSNBC gets 874,000.

In the aftermath of the Arizona shootings, President Obama canceled his travel plans and called for a national moment of silence, which he and first lady Michelle Obama will observe on the South Lawn at 11 a.m. Monday.
But silence is the easy part. In the hours and days that follow, will Obama speak out?
And after an event so inexplicable – and at the same time so politically polarizing, with liberals and conservatives assuming their assigned battle stations over whether guns and partisan rhetoric are to blame – what larger message could the president send?
As John Dickerson of Slate notes, it would be difficult for some Americans to see Obama as anything other than a Democrat – a partisan, in other words – if he delivered a speech on the importance of civility, although there may be powerful reasons for him to try. He was, after all, the candidate who tapped into a collective hunger to end partisan rancor, and who confronted the seemingly thornier issue of race.
The question is whether this is the moment that calls for such a speech. It is unclear whether ideology motivated the alleged shooter, Jared Loughner. And Obama’s advisers may well view as unwise the idea of using the tragedy to prompt a national conversation on mutual respect.
