A tearful Jennifer Hudson told Oprah Winfrey today that the 2008 shooting deaths of her mother, brother and nephew were a “complete shock.”
“It’s such a shocking thing and it’s a lot to take in,” the Oscar-winning actress and singer, 29, said on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
“It’s like, OK, is this real? Did this really happen? It’s hard to put it in sync with reality.”
Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and the singer’s brother, Jason Hudson, were found dead Oct. 24, 2008, inside the home they shared with Julia Hudson on Chicago’s South Side. Julia Hudson is Jennifer Hudson’s older sister.
Julia Hudson’s 7-year-old son, Julian King, was found dead, covered in a shower curtain, three days later in the back of Jason Hudson’s SUV.

On Wednesday’s “Last Word,” Lawrence O’Donnell and Iowa Congressman Steve King clashed over some Republicans’ false belief that President Obama is a Muslim–and O’Donnell challenged King to prove that he himself is a Christian.
The interview was prompted by a focus group of Iowa Republicans, whose reaction to Bill O’Reilly’s interview with Obama was aired on Fox News. O’Donnell showed footage of some of the focus group members saying they believe Obama is a Muslim.
“Do you have any doubt about whether [Obama] is a Christian?” he asked King. “I take him at his word,” King said.
“Are you a Christian?” O’Donnell asked. “Yes,” King said.
“Should I take you at your word or should I maybe suspect you are Muslim?” O’Donnell said. “Do you have a Christian ID you can show me?”
King said that the misconception about Obama’s religion among many Republicans is “not a Republican problem, this is the president’s problem.” O’Donnell asked,”if Republicans believe the world is flat, is that a Republican problem or a geography problem?”
Of course it’s Obama’s problem, because he’s black, not King’s problem because he and his ilk can NOT handle BLACKNESS.

The President has set a goal of providing 98% of Americans with access to so-called 4G wireless networks capable of handling large amounts of data like streaming video. This event was held at Northern Michigan University in the city of Marquette.

Mark Madoff’s widow turned away Ruth at memorial service

Ruth Madoff flew from Florida to Greenwich, Conn., to attend a private memorial service for her son Mark after his suicide last December — but was turned away by his unforgiving widow, Stephanie.
The first lady of fraud mourned at a friend’s house and sat shiva alone, a family source told People magazine. She passes most of her days and nights alone and numb, the friend said.
“She told me, ‘At night, it gets to me — the shame, the disgrace, all the stuff that killed Mark.’ ”
When Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme collapsed, Mark and his brother, Andrew, warned their mother: It’s him or us.

Last week, Gov. Kasich acknowledged the public outcry about the case and said he’d investigate.1 Also last week, prosecutors dropped the remaining charges in the case (for grand theft) against Williams-Bolar and her father.2
On Monday, we went to Gov. Kasich’s office to deliver your signatures, along with thousands more from Change.org and MomsRising.org — more than 165,000 signatures in all. The petition delivery was covered by most of the major media in the state capitol.3,4,5
On Tuesday, Gov. Kasich responded by asking the state’s parole board to review Williams-Bolar’s case.6
This an important step towards justice: before Gov. Kasich can pardon Williams-Bolar he must receive a recommendation from the parole board. To review her case and make a recommendation, the parole board had to receive a request from the governor or Williams-Bolar herself. Now that Gov. Kasich has made that request, the process for pardoning Williams-Bolar or commuting her sentence can begin.
Our voices are also having an impact beyond this particular case. By speaking out for Kelley Williams-Bolar, we’re also helping to focus the country’s attention on the conditions that put her in this situation: the lack of access to safe, quality education that so many of our children face, and the fact that it’s often rooted in economic and racial inequality.
Gov. Kasich acknowledged the public pressure that led him to take action Tuesday, saying “Many people have shared their thoughts with me in letters, email and phone calls, and I appreciate their outreach.”7
We still don’t know if the parole board will do the right thing. And we need to make sure that Gov. Kasich stays involved and committed to doing everything he can to ensure a just outcome for Kelley Williams-Bolar and her family. But we do know that they are a few steps closer to justice now, and it’s thanks in large part to the voices of ColorOfChange members and our friends at Change.org and MomsRising.org.

As reported by The Caucus, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) has invited Donald Trump to speak at their event and in an apparent attempt to fuel speculation of a potential campaign for the presidency, Trump has accepted. Just last night, Trump told CNN’s Piers Morgan that he was unsatisfied with the potential crop of GOP nominees for 2012 and would announce whether he was running in June.

The executive vice president of the Trump organization, Michael Cohen tells The Caucus that CPAC is “a tremendous forum to espouse [Trump’s] views” and that Trump is seriously considering a campaign for President because “he’s disgusted with how the country is being run.” In addition to telling Piers how he thinks China is our enemy and that he would immediately put a heavy tax on all Chinese products if he was President, Trump is outspoken on many issues.
In the clip below, when Piers asks Trump if Congressman Christopher Lee needed to resign for morality issues when all he did was send someone a picture of himself on craigslist, Trump responded, “well I think he should resign because he’s stupid, can you imagine . . . these are the people that are representing us in negotiations with China and then you wonder why are we losing to China and OPEC?” Might this blunt tone be exactly what will get the conservatives at CPAC excited?

Man admits burning cross at home of black child

A man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge related to a cross-burning in the yard of a juvenile.
Nineteen-year-old Michael Bealonis of West Wheatfield was one of three people charged in the November 2009 crime in Indiana County. He pleaded guilty Wednesday to interfering with the housing rights of another.
Prosecutors said the defendants set a six-foot wooden cross afire in the yard of a family with three children, one of whom was black.
Thomas Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, said Mr. Bealonis “used an unmistakable symbol of bigotry” to threaten the family simply because of the race of a child.
Mr. Bealonis is to be sentenced May 25.

Minorities are majority population in Montgomery County

Minorities have become a majority over the past decade in affluent Montgomery County as the number of whites has plummeted, according to census figures released Wednesday.
In Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, whites were largely replaced by Hispanics, a Washington Post analysis of the detailed census statistics shows. Hispanics outnumber blacks in Montgomery and just edge past whites in Prince George’s County.
Barely 49 percent of Montgomery’s 972,000 residents are non-Hispanic whites, down from almost 60 percent in 2000 and 72 percent a decade before that. Hispanics rose by two-thirds and make up about 17 percent of the county’s population.
The census figures surprised some residents but reinforced what’s readily evident.
“Wow. That’s incredible,” said Montgomery County Council member Nancy Navarro (D-Eastern County), who immigrated to the United States from Venezuela when she was in the fifth grade. “This changes the image of Montgomery County as just a wealthy, mostly Caucasian county.
“A lot of us know intuitively what happened, but it’s different when you have it in real numbers,” she added. “We have to recognize what the Montgomery County of today looks like.”
The major demographic shifts mirror changes underway throughout much of the region and state.

Obama to unveil wireless Internet plan

President Obama is to unveil a plan Thursday to bring wireless high-speed Internet access to all Americans, a goal the administration says is key to the country’s ability to compete globally in the years to come.
In an afternoon speech at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Obama is to explain how he plans to bring mobile broadband connections to 98 percent of the American people in five years, a goal announced last month during his State of the Union address.
The administration has touted the ability of wireless broadband connections to transform local economies and the way schools, doctors and utility companies operate.
“It’s an economic story of empowerment,” White House Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra said in a conference call with journalists Wednesday. “Rural stakeholders see this as a critical piece to participate in the 21st-century economy.”

Mississippi License Plate Proposed To Honor KKK Leader

JACKSON, Miss. — A fight is brewing in Mississippi over a proposal to issue specialty license plates honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans wants to sponsor a series of state-issued license plates to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which it calls the “War Between the States.” The group proposes a different design each year between now and 2015, with Forrest slated for 2014.
“Seriously?” state NAACP president Derrick Johnson said when he was told about the Forrest plate. “Wow.”
Forrest, a Tennessee native, is revered by some as a military genius and reviled by others for leading the 1864 massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tenn.
Forrest was a Klan grand wizard in Tennessee after the war.
Sons of Confederate Veterans member Greg Stewart said he believes Forrest distanced himself from the Klan later in life. It’s a point many historians agree upon, though some believe it was too little, too late, because the Klan had already turned violent before Forrest left.

Jennifer Hudson To Discuss Family’s Murder On ‘Oprah’

CHICAGO — Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson will talk about her recent weight loss and the murders of her mother, brother and nephew on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
The Chicago native will also sing during the episode set to air Thursday.
Hudson, a Grammy and Oscar winner, has been a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers.
In October 2008, the bodies of her mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, were found in the family’s home on Chicago’s South Side.
The body of her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was found days later in a sport utility vehicle about 10 miles away. All three had been shot.
The estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia, is charged with first-degree murder in the killings.
Hudson has repeatedly declined to talk publicly about the killings.
I’m glad Jennifer feels free to go on Oprah and talk about this publically. Not surprising the timing of it all. With the weight loss comes releasing of the emotions that sparked the weight gain.
I’d like to see this episode to hear how she’s worked through this tragedy.

How the Affordable Care Act empowers states

As governor of Kansas, I saw up close the urgent need for health-care reform. I heard it when factory owners told me their biggest concern was not manufacturing costs but rising insurance premiums, and when families said they felt like hostages to insurance companies that could deny or cancel coverage with little accountability. I saw it in our state budget, where rising health-care costs prevented investments in our future.
The Affordable Care Act puts states in the driver’s seat because they often understand their health needs better than anyone else – and that is why it is so frustrating to hear opponents of reform falsely attack the law as “nationalized health care.”
The truth is that states aren’t just participating in implementation of the law; they’re leading it.
