Maze a soul / quiet storm band, also known alternately as Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and Frankie Beverly and Maze, was established in San Francisco, California in the early 1970s.
The band can be considered as the project of former The Butlers, and later Raw Soul, member Frankie Beverly; being songwriter, record producer, arranger, singer, keyboardist and guitarist.
The Philadelphia born Beverly started the group as Raw Soul in 1970. They recorded a couple of singles on the small Gregar label, but without any major hits. But with a few personnel changes, a relocation from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Bay Area in California in 1971, and an introduction to Marvin Gaye, the group became an immediate success. Gaye took the group on the road with him as one of his opening acts, and in 1976 he suggested that they changed their name from Raw Soul to Maze.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you, everybody. Thank you. Everybody, please have a seat.
Thank you so much. I am thrilled to be here. I want to, first of all, thank Paul for that introduction, and I want to thank Paul for agreeing to be part of our administration’s new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. I look forward to our continuing conversations when we meet next week.
I also want to acknowledge a wonderful governor, Governor Kitzhaber, who is here. Thank you so much for all the work that you’re doing. (Applause.) And the mayor of Hillsboro, Jerry Willey, thank you for the great work that you do. (Applause.)
And I want to thank everybody here at Intel for hosting us here today. We just had an amazing tour. One of my staff, he said, it’s like magic. (Laughter.) He did, that’s what he said. (Laughter.)
I had a chance to see everything from an electron microscope to the inside of your microprocessor facility, the clean room. And I have to say, for all the gadgets you’ve got here, what actually most impressed me were the students and the science projects that I just had a chance to see. It gave them a chance to talk about things like quantum ternary algorithms — (laughter) — and it gave me a chance to nod my head and pretend that I understood what they were talking about. (Laughter and applause.)
So that was the high school guys. Then we went over to — (laughter) — seriously. Then we went over to meet some seventh graders, six girls, and it was wonderful — all girls — who had started a science program after school that involved Legos. So I’m thinking, now this is more my speed. (Laughter.) I used to build some pretty mean Lego towers when I was a kid. (Laughter.) I thought I could participate — only these students used their Legos to build models — to build robots that were programmable to model brains that could repair broken bones. So I guess that’s different than towers. (Laughter.) It’s not as good. (Laughter.) The towers. (Laughter.)

Jeff Bingaman to retire

New Mexico Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman announced his retirement today, a move that further complicates his party’s efforts to hold their Senate majority in 2012.
“The end of this Congress is the right time for me to step aside and allow someone else to serve,” Bingaman said at an Albuquerque news conference. “It is not easy to get elected to the Senate, and it is not easy to decide to leave the Senate.”
Bingaman had been mulling whether to run for a sixth term for months and, if he had, would have almost certainly been re-elected.
His retirement, however, creates an open seat contest that both national parties will almost certainly target. Democrats should start the race with an edge, however, given President Obama’s 15-point victory margin in the state in 2008.
“It speaks volumes about the state of the two political parties that as strong Republican candidates step forward in key races, Senate Democrats in important battleground states are stepping aside, said a National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman in a statement.
Bingaman is the fourth Democratic (or Democratic-aligned) Senator to announce that he will not run for re-election in 2012, joining Sens. Jim Webb (Va.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Kent Conrad (N.D.) on the sidelines.
Two Republicans — Sens. Jon Kyl (Ariz.) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas) — are not running for new terms.
Democratic strategists, while disappointed in Bingaman’s decision, cast the decision as part of a broader strategy put in place by Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (Wash.) to force members on the fence to make their intentions clear early on.
The fields for each side remain uncertain.
Reps. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan will almost certainly be mentioned on the Democratic side as might that of former Lt. Gov. Diane Denish. A consultant close to Denish told the Fix that “Diane is going to give this opportunity strong consideration as she decides how to best continue to serve the people of New Mexico.”
Former Rep. Heather Wilson has been mentioned as a possible Republican candidate even before the Bingaman retirement and seems likely to make the race. Sources close to Rep. Steve Pearce say he is looking seriously at running.

Government shutdown is likely, Pelosi aide says

A high-ranking aide to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told chiefs of staff of Democratic lawmakers that a government shutdown is more likely than not, according to attendees.
Speaking at a regular meeting of the top aides to House Democrats, Pelosi’s floor director, Jerry Hartz, offered, unprompted, his assessment that the odds favor inaction before the government runs out of money, sources said.
That became the focal point of the meeting, sources said, with the other aides asking only questions about “the possibility of a government shutdown and the logistics” — i.e., what it would mean for their offices and government services — according to one chief of staff who spoke to POLITICO on the condition of anonymity.
The aide said the message of a likely shutdown did not appear geared toward ginning up the staffers for political purposes.
“It was genuine,” the aide said.

David Paterson: If Eliot Spitzer Doesn’t Work Out ‘I’m Always There To Take His Place”

Former New York governor David Paterson called in to Don Imus‘ show, broadcast on Fox Business Network, and discussed new governor Andrew Cuomo’s success as well as his own relationship with Eliot Spitzer, the man whose job he replaced after Spitzer was caught in… you know. That whole unpleasantness.
Paterson happens to be quite a funny guy, as evidenced by what he told Imus about not having been invited to appear on Spitzer’s CNN show, Parker Spitzer:
He hasn’t invited me on the show but I do talk to him from time to time. I thought he should have invited me on the show. The ratings are not good at that hour anyways. I think his show is very good. He is very bright, he has an opinion about everything and he expresses it well. I think he does a good show. If it doesn’t work out I am always there to take his place.

Breaking News Alert: Obama administration rescinds key parts of federal regulation on ‘conscience protections’ for health workers

The Obama administration on Friday eliminated key provisions of a George W. Bush-era rule that allowed health workers to opt out of medical services they find objectionable on religious or personal grounds. The rule was widely interpreted as allowing workers to refuse to participate in a range of services, including providing the emergency contraceptive Plan B and treating gays and lesbians.
The new rule leaves intact previously established “conscience protections” for workers who do not want to perform abortions or sterilizations. It also retains the Bush rule’s formal process for allowing workers whose rights are violated to file complaints.

Bill targets teacher collective bargaining (Tennessee)

NASHVILLE — Tennessee school districts would no longer have to engage in negotiations with teachers’ unions under a measure that is headed for a full Senate vote despite opposition from hundreds of state teachers.
However, “Working conditions for teachers are the learning conditions for students,” according to Kathy Stapleton, a lead negotiator for the Marshall County Education Association who explained teacher contracts influence the number of children in a class.
The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Jack Johnson of Brentwood passed the Senate Education Committee 6-3 along party lines on Wednesday. The committee room was packed with educators, who spilled out into the hallways of the Legislative Plaza across the street from the Capitol and watched on flat screen televisions.
House Republican Caucus Chairwoman Debra Maggart is sponsoring the companion bill.

American Airlines to re-hire 200 flight attendants

NEW YOKR (MarketWatch) — American Airlines and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants have struck a deal for the carrier to re-hire 200 furloughed flight attendants, the union said Friday. The new agreement is on top of 365 re-hires announced last week. Furthermore, 228 furloughed flight attendants remaining on the recall list will get unlimited recall rights, the APFA said, rather than be removed in November. Flight attendants under the latest deal will return to work in two groups, with 100 returning by July 15 and another 100 back to work by Oct. 15. APFA represents nearly 18,000 flight attendants at American Airlines.

A health-care crime sweep Thursday netted 114 defendants on charges related to Medicare fraud, in what Attorney General Eric Holder called the largest such takedown in U.S. history.
The defendants—charged in nine metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Detroit and Miami—were allegedly involved in more than 40 schemes, almost all of which were unrelated to one another, officials said. Altogether, the schemes attempted to defraud the government of more than $240 million, according to law enforcement officials.
Several of the cases appear to involve doctors or other health-care practitioners acting alone or with few alleged co-conspirators. One of these, Brooklyn physical therapist Aleksandr Kharkover, had been featured in a December Wall Street Journal article on possible financial abuse involving physical therapy, a growing area of Medicare fraud.

Millions of people in the Midwest are at risk from major flooding this spring, according to a forecast being released Friday by the National Weather Service.
A huge part of the north-central USA, including the cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, St. Louis, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Fargo and Grand Forks, N.D., could see “significant” flooding.
“Excessive precipitation, mainly in the form of snow, coupled with continuously frigid temperatures, has yielded a thick snowpack in much of the upper Midwest,” says Lynn Maximuk, central region director of the National Weather Service in Kansas City, Mo. “We expect significant flooding when this snow begins to melt.”
Forecasters say the flooding could start as early as mid-March and last well into April.
For the third straight year, experts are warning of “moderate” to “major” flooding along the Red River of the North, which would again swamp the flood-plagued city of Fargo, N.D., and its neighbor across the river, Moorhead, Minn.

Obama joins Wisconsin’s budget battle, opposing Republican anti-union bill

MADISON, WIS. – President Obama thrust himself and his political operation this week into Wisconsin’s broiling budget battle, mobilizing opposition Thursday to a Republican bill that would curb public-worker benefits while planning similar action in other state capitals.
Obama accused Scott Walker, the state’s new Republican governor, of unleashing an “assault” on unions in pushing emergency legislation that would nullify collective-bargaining agreements that affect most public employees, including teachers.
The president’s political machine worked in close coordination Thursday with state and national union officials to mobilize thousands of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in other state capitals.
Their efforts began to spread, as thousands of labor supporters turned out for a hearing in Columbus, Ohio, to protest a measure from Gov. John Kasich (R) that would cut collective-bargaining rights.
By the end of the day, Democratic Party officials were working to organize additional demonstrations in Ohio and Indiana, where an effort is underway to trim benefits for public workers. Some union activists predicted similar protests in Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Haley Barbour’s silence speaks volumes

Does Haley Barbour really have a warped and offensive view of America’s racial history? Or is he just playing a dangerous game?
Perhaps both.
The Mississippi governor, considered a potential Republican candidate for president in 2012, keeps displaying what appears to be an astonishing level of ignorance about our nearly 400-year struggle with issues of race. At this point, it’s more than a pattern. It’s either a pathology or a plan.
The latest outrage – and I don’t use that word lightly – came Tuesday, when Barbour was asked to comment on a proposal for a state license plate honoring one of the most notorious figures of the Civil War era, Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. I question whether any Confederate officer is worthy of such recognition, given that they were all committing treason. But even for the Sons of Confederate Veterans – the group proposing the license plate – Forrest should be an embarrassment.
For those who do not see the Civil War through a revisionist gauze of gallantry and Spanish moss, Forrest is an abomination. In 1864, his troops mowed down scores of black Union soldiers who were trying to surrender, in what became known as the Fort Pillow Massacre. After the war, Forrest became one of the founding fathers of the terrorist Ku Klux Klan – and was the group’s first national leader, or “grand wizard.”
Barbour was asked whether he would denounce the idea of honoring such a figure. “I don’t go around denouncing people,” he told reporters. “That’s not going to happen.”
