In win for voters, Montana court blocks Republican-backed attack on Election Day registration
    By Yunior Rivas

    May 11, 2026

In a major win for Montana voters, a court blocked a voter suppression law that would’ve cut off Election Day registration for federal elections at noon — preserving an essential voting option Montanans have used for decades ahead of the 2026 midterms.

In an order Friday, the First Judicial District Court of Montana enjoined Senate Bill 490 (SB 490), a Republican-backed law that would’ve barred voters who register after 12 p.m. on Election Day from voting in federal races.

The ruling temporarily blocks enforcement of the law and means Election Day registration will remain available to Montana voters for the full day as the lawsuit continues.

“Election Day registration shall remain available to all eligible voters for the full duration of Election Day, consistent with the practices in place prior to the enactment of SB 490,” the court wrote.

  8. nedhamson says:

The gerrymandering is only important, if you think people will be voting in the same way in November 2026 as they did in November 2024. I believe that with a stronger than normal voter turnout, the Democrats will pick up 30-40 seats in the House of Representatives and perhaps 15-20 seats in the US Senate. And then it will be time for impeachments and expulsions in the Executive and Judicial branches of the US Government.

Leona Tate’s testimony is the line that deserves to travel.

She desegregated a New Orleans school at six years old. Walked through a mob to do it. Now 71, she stood in a Louisiana hearing room this week to testify against maps designed to eliminate Black congressional representation in her state.

“I walked through that mob once,” she said. “I feel like I’m still walking through it.”

The maps she’s testifying against are the direct product of a ruling that relied on turnout data experts called deliberately misleading, issued by justices who built the legal architecture of this moment over four decades. The states were waiting for clearance. They moved within hours.

Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina – all at once. Protesters removed from chambers. A senator standing on her desk. The four Black congressmen Louisiana has produced since the 1870s, all in the same room.

People keep trying to rewrite history, but the documents are public.

The Confederacy officially consisted of 11 states that seceded from the Union:

    • South Carolina
    • Mississippi
    • Florida
    • Alabama
    • Georgia
    • Louisiana
    • Texas
    • Virginia
    • Arkansas
    • North Carolina
    • Tennessee

The Confederacy also CLAIMED Kentucky and Missouri.

West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the Civil War because many people in the western counties opposed Virginia’s decision to secede from the Union in 1861.

And let’s be very clear: many of these states plainly stated WHY they were leaving the Union.

    Mississippi said:
“Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery…”

Texas defended “the servitude of the African race.”

Georgia, South Carolina, and others complained about abolitionists, Black freedom, and threats to slavery.

This wasn’t hidden. It wasn’t subtle. It was written down in their own declarations. The Civil War never ended.

And many of these same states later:
    • created Black Codes
    • enforced Jim Crow
    • fought school integration
    • resisted the Voting Rights Act
    • used terror, media, politics, and violence to suppress Black political power

    History leaves patterns.

That’s why studying history matters — because some of the same states still struggle with the same racial tensions and political battles today.

Read the documents for yourself. Don’t let people sanitize history to make themselves comfortable.

    Mike Young
    @micyoung75
Every outlet is running the “corrupted” quote. The detail they’re skipping is the one that makes this structurally irreversible.

The decision of whether to prosecute Jack Smith for conducting a legitimate federal investigation now belongs to Todd Blanche. The acting attorney general who personally served as Trump’s lead defense lawyer in the cases Smith brought. The man who sat across the courtroom from Smith arguing Trump was innocent is now in charge of deciding whether Smith goes to prison for building those cases.

There is no recusal discussion. No institutional firewall. Smith indicted Trump. Trump’s lawyer is now the charging authority over Smith.

Smith also named something that deserves more than a passing mention. After an unarmed woman was shot and killed by an immigration agent during a street protest in Minnesota, Bondi and Patel did not order an investigation into the agent. They ordered federal agents to find links between the victim and left-wing domestic terrorist groups. A dead woman. They built a file on her.

“I’ve never been in a Department of Justice that would be willing to be complicit in something like that,” Smith said.

Federal judges have accused DOJ officials of dishonesty so many times since January 2025 that Smith said it had become “difficult to track.” Judges. In court filings. On the record.

The DOJ spokeswoman’s full response to all of this: “I would expect nothing less from Jack Smith.”

The Democracy Docket piece puts a seat count on what has been an abstract structural argument.

Before the redraws: a competitive baseline. After: Republicans 10 to 12 House seats ahead of where they would have been. That’s not a trend or a polling advantage. That’s a pre-built structural cushion locked in before the midterms begin.

The sequence is documented. Trump directed GOP-led states to gerrymander as aggressively as possible last summer as public opinion began turning against his party. Texas, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio answered that call. The Callais ruling then opened the door for Alabama, Louisiana, and South Carolina. Those three states alone, combined with the earlier redraws, produce a potential 16 to 18-seat swing in the GOP’s direction.

Democrats gained 5 seats in California and 1 in Utah. Virginia’s state supreme court blocked 4 more Friday.

The math: 16-18 GOP gains against 6 Democratic gains, with 4 more blocked. Net Republican advantage: 10-12 seats. Built not from votes but from maps drawn on White House instruction, then ratified by two court rulings in the same week.

The midterms haven’t happened. The outcome is already being constructed.
