Wiki:  Maxwell (born May 23, 1973), is an American R&B artist. He played an important role in the development of the soul sub-genre, neo-soul.[2]

Maxwell was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father was Pentecostal and raised in Vieques, Puerto Rico. His mother grew up in a devout Baptist household in Haiti.[3][4][5]

Maxwell began working with songwriter Leon Ware and noted guitarist Wah Wah Watson to record his debut Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite in the early 1990s. When the album was finished Columbia had doubts about its potential and shelved it for two years. The album was finally issued in 1996.

Heavily inspired by the sound of classic soul music, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite did not catch on with audiences until the release of its second single, “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” which became a hit. Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite sold over 2,000,000 copies, earning 2X platinum status, and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

On October 2006, Maxwell contributed the song “Segurança (Security)” to the AIDS-Benefit Album Red Hot + Rio produced by the Red Hot Organization.

Freshman Democrat Joe Manchin: Obama has ‘failed to lead’ on budget
By JENNIFER EPSTEIN & SCOTT WONG | 3/8/11 8:24 AM EST Updated: 3/8/11 5:05 PM EST

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin ripped President Barack Obama on his budget proposals in a Senate floor speech Tuesday, a rare rebuke from a freshman Democrat who clearly is worried about the politics of deficit spending as he faces a tough reelection in 2012.

Manchin charged the president with failing to lead the way in reducing spending, while also criticizing Republicans for offering “partisan” and “unrealistic” budget proposals.

Days after the actor expressed disappointment in Obama to Piers Morgan, he gave an interview to Great Britian’s The Independent in which he went into greater detail over what he considers missed opportunities on the commander-in-chief’s part.

“I think he’s rolled over to Wall Street completely,” Damon said. “The economy has huge problems. We still have all these banks that are too big to fail. They’re bigger and making more money than ever. Unemployment at 10 percent? It’s terrible.”

WASHINGTON — Family members of two young men who were inspired to terrorism, with deadly consequences, plan to tell Congress that the men were victims of brainwashing by radical elements in local Muslim communities, according to prepared testimony obtained by The Associated Press.

The remarks are scheduled to be delivered as part of the House Homeland Security Committee’s hearing on Islamic radicalization Thursday. Plans for the hearing touched off days of protests from critics who liken it to McCarthyism and the era of communist witch hunts.

But at least in the prepared testimony, there’s nothing that indiscriminately labels Muslims as terrorists, as critics had feared.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/09/muslim-americans-peter-king-radical-islam_n_833708.html#comments

WASHINGTON — Members of the Muslim community on Wednesday denounced hearings scheduled by Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y) on the radicalization of American Muslims. The controversial House Homeland Security Committee hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

“Representative King’s two main allegations — that American Muslims do not cooperate with law enforcement, and that 80 to 85 percent of their leadership are ‘extremists’ — are demonstrably false,” said Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Nihad Awad. Top law enforcement officials such as FBI Director Robert Mueller and Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca, commander of the nation’s largest sheriff’s department, have reported Muslims support and cooperate with law enforcement, Awad noted.

King has called Muslims “part of the mosaic” of America and argued they shouldn’t feel threatened or intimidated by his line of inquiry. But many fear that King is on a witch hunt, comparing the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee to Joseph McCarthy, and hundreds of Muslim Americans gathered in New York City this weekend in protest of the hearings.

Democrats plead with King to cancel hearing on US Muslims
By Jordy Yager – 03/09/11 04:08 PM ET

More than 50 Democrats on Wednesday pleaded with House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Pete King (R-N.Y.) to cancel his panel’s hearing on radicalization within the Muslim American community.

A group of 56 lawmakers said in a letter to King that the hearing will jeopardize trust between Muslims in the U.S. and law enforcement officials, adding that “the stated narrow scope and underlying premises of these hearings unfairly stigmatizes and alienates Muslim Americans.”

They asked King to broaden the scope of the hearing to include extremists of all ideologies and motivations. The hearing on Thursday is titled, “The extent of radicalization in the American Muslim community and that community’s response.”

“Singling out one religious group and blaming the actions of individuals on an entire community is not only unfair, it is unwise — and it will not make our country any safer,” the group of lawmakers wrote in the letter.

The committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Bennie Thompson (Miss.), made the same plea to King last month. But King responded that he “will not allow political correctness to obscure a real and dangerous threat to the safety and security of the citizens of the United States.”

The hearing has sparked a furor in the media and among Islamic and civil-liberty groups, like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), that say Muslims are being unfairly targeted. They have called for King to cast a wider net that encompasses neo-Nazis and environmental extremists.

King told the Hill on Tuesday that he was somewhat surprised by the public outcry over the hearings because the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has held multiple hearings of the same nature over the past several years, with little or no opposition.

Hearings before the Senate panel have included titles such as: “Violent Islamist Extremism: Al-Shabaab Recruitment in America,” “The Roots of Violent Islamist Extremism and Efforts to Counter It” and “Violent Islamist Extremism: Government Efforts to Defeat It.”

The letter on Wednesday was signed by the ranking Democrat on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Bob Filner (Calif.); the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank (Mass.); the House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers Jr. (Mich.); and the House Education and Labor Committee, George Miller (Calif.).

Mel Gibson Strikes Plea Deal — NO JAIL TIME
3/9/2011 8:30 AM PST by TMZ Staff

    ——————————————————————————–

Mel Gibson has struck an agreement with prosecutors and has made a plea deal in his looming criminal case … sources connected with the L.A. County District Attorney tell TMZ … and Mel will not get jail time.

Our sources say Mel will appear in court Friday and will plead no contest to simple battery — a lesser charge than corporal injury on a spouse.

As we first reported, Mel had been agonizing over the impending criminal charge — related to the January 6, 2010 blowout with Oksana Grigorieva — worried that a prolonged court fight would be a strain on his family, particularly his children. We’re told … even though Mel believed he could win the case — he struck the deal to protect his loved ones.

We’re told the deal involves counseling but NO JAIL TIME.

When contacted for a response, Mel’s lawyer, Blair Berk, released the following statement to TMZ: “I know from almost 20 years as a criminal defense lawyer that sometimes justice can come for a client at too high a personal price. That is particularly so for Mel, whose right to due process can only be exercised in this case with an enormous media circus attached.”

Berk goes on, “Mel’s priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter Lucia and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made. It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the District Attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/09/scott-walker-email_n_833454.html#comments

WASHINGTON — Union officials in Wisconsin are accusing Gov. Scott Walker of selectively leaking emails in an effort to come off as more compromising than he has been in the debate over his sharply contested budget bill.

On Tuesday, the governor’s office made public several exchanges it had with AWOL Senate Democrats seeking to find a bit of common ground in an anti-collective bargaining measure included in the budget proposal.

The exchanges presented Walker in a far more moderate light than recent press coverage — which had focused largely on his refusal to even sit at the bargaining table with union leaders. It also revealed, for the first time, the contours of a possible resolution to the current stand off: one that would no longer restrict bargaining rights to rates of inflation, or prevent unions from bargaining over mandatory overtime, performance bonuses, or hazardous duty pay.

    ‘Go to your room’
A critic wants to ‘whip’ Obama
    By MJ LEE | 03/09/11 8:05 AM Updated: 03/09/11 8:17 AM

Jimmy McMillan (“the rent is too damn high”) announced in December that he’ll run for president as a Republican. On Tuesday, the former New York gubernatorial candidate declared that he’s ready to do more than just beat President Obama.

“I don’t want to beat him – I’m going to whip him,” McMillan said on Fox News. “I put him in the White House to do a job, and he didn’t do it. I put him in there to feed my children, and he let daddy down. It’s time for daddy to step up and do what daddy gotta do.”

In his trademark rapid and rambling style, McMillan said the Democratic Party had “punk’d” the public by using Obama to lure them into voting for it.

“I can’t bulldoze the mountains in upstate New York [by] running for president of the United States, but what I can do is bulldoze those politicians out of the White House that are sitting there, and in the Capitol Hill building that is not doing anything for the public,” he said.

McMillan, who said he voted for Obama, condemned the president’s major financial decisions, including bailing out banks. “He don’t know what to do – he don’t have a plan at all,” McMillan said. “You didn’t do a good job – it’s time for you to go, now go to your room and go to sleep.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/09/sarah-palin-testimony-of-faith_n_833342.html

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is slated to deliver a “testimony of faith” at a religious conference in Lynchburg, Va. this fall, which will be broadcast in more than 1,000 churches nationwide.

The Extraordinary Women Conference will take place at Liberty University on Oct. 7-8, dates that Politico notes fall on the same week Republican presidential candidates are expected to meet in Minnesota for the Midwest Leadership Conference, an event put on by the state’s GOP.

On Tuesday, Palin led some to question her presidential aspirations when it was reported that she was scheduled to attend an event in Denver on May 2, the same date as the first GOP primary debate.

Liberty University chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. wrote in an email to the Lynchburg News & Advance that the institution was “honored to host (the conference) and to welcome Governor Sarah Palin to our campus.”

Continued Falwell: “Governor Palin is greatly admired by our Liberty University faculty, staff and students for her patriotism and her determination to stand up for what is right despite vicious and unrelenting attacks against her and her family.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/09/vivian-schiller-npr-ceo-r_n_833348.html

NPR CEO Vivian Schiller resigned on Wednesday morning, the network’s board announced.

Schiller’s resignation was reported first by NPR’s media reporter, David Folkenflik. Folkenflik said Schiller had been “ousted” by the board.

“The Board accepted Vivian’s resignation with understanding, genuine regret and great respect for her leadership of NPR these past 2 years,” the NPR board said in a statement.

The news came after the latest scandal to hit the organization, this one involving one of its top fundraisers, Ron Schiller (no relation), and his comments about the Tea Party.

Schiller’s ouster also comes during an intense period of political pressure on NPR. The Republican majority in the House of Representatives has repeatedly called for NPR’s government funding to be cut. Just this past Monday, Schiller appeared before the National Press Club and defended NPR’s funding, calling it a vital means of support for the organization.

For Lawmaker Examining Terror, a Pro-I.R.A. PastBy SCOTT SHANE
    Published: March 8, 2011
WASHINGTON — For Representative Peter T. King, as he seizes the national spotlight this week with a hearing on the radicalization of American Muslims, it is the most awkward of résumé entries. Long before he became an outspoken voice in Congress about the threat from terrorism, he was a fervent supporter of a terrorist group, the Irish Republican Army.
“We must pledge ourselves to support those brave men and women who this very moment are carrying forth the struggle against British imperialism in the streets of Belfast and Derry,” Mr. King told a pro-I.R.A. rally on Long Island, where he was serving as Nassau County comptroller, in 1982. Three years later he declared, “If civilians are killed in an attack on a military installation, it is certainly regrettable, but I will not morally blame the I.R.A. for it.”

As Mr. King, a Republican, rose as a Long Island politician in the 1980s, benefiting from strong Irish-American support, the I.R.A. was carrying out a bloody campaign of bombing and sniping, targeting the British Army, Protestant paramilitaries and sometimes pubs and other civilian gathering spots. His statements, along with his close ties to key figures in the military and political wings of the I.R.A., drew the attention of British and American authorities.

    Port-of-Spain Journal
Carnival’s Louder Commercial Beat Adds DissonanceBy JOHN ELIGON
    Published: March 9, 2011

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago — To some people here, Dean Ackin, 38, with his boyish face, is an inspiration of entrepreneurship, a bearer of this country’s evolving culture. To others, he is a threat to this nation’s most beloved social and cultural treasure: Carnival.

Mr. Ackin runs one of the country’s most popular Carnival bands, the groups of people who don costumes and masquerade — or play Mas, as locals call it — in the raucous annual two-day street parade. The roughly 5,000 spots available in Mr. Ackin’s band, Tribe, sell out every year almost as fast as they go on sale. Demand has been so high since he started Tribe in 2005 that Mr. Ackin just started a second band.

But some say Mr. Ackin and others like him, who have in recent years spun profitable, year-round businesses out of organizing these bands, threaten the existence of Carnival as Trinidadians know it.

By shunning the conservative, traditional costumes for cheaper, skimpier outfits that are sometimes produced outside of Trinidad, these new bands, critics say, are distorting their forebears’ creation and sending work elsewhere at a time when the government and others are trying to turn Trinidadian-style Carnival into a more profitable and exportable industry.

    When Murdoch wins, citizens lose
    By Katrina vanden Heuvel
    Tuesday, March 8, 2011

We tend to measure the influence of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. in terms of the reach of Fox News or the circulation of the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal. But it is actually local television stations on which Murdoch has built his empire and increased his stranglehold on access to information.

He has done so, in large part, by taking advantage of a 1999 change in FCC rules that allowed a single company to own more than one television station in the same market. That arrangement, known as a duopoly, lets big conglomerates such as News Corp. buy up stations, reduce their staffs and consolidate newsrooms. Murdoch now has nine duopolies. According to Santa Clara University’s Allen Hammond, a staggering 109 duopolies were created between 2000 and 2006.

The problem isn’t just that control over the airwaves becomes concentrated; it’s that such consolidation often results in the gutting of local news coverage. Duopoly owners tend to duplicate their local coverage and reduce the amount of airtime dedicated to community news. The subsequent lack of coverage gives local governments a free pass to operate without any real media scrutiny.
