Reports are surfacing that Scott Walker is now preparing his next assault on the democratic political process in the State of Wisconsin.
Following the lead of Michigan GOP Governor Rick Snyder, Walker is said to be preparing a plan that would allow him to force local governments to submit to a financial stress test with an eye towards permitting the governor to take over municipalities that fail to meet with Walker’s approval.
According to the reports, should a locality’s financial position come up short, the Walker legislation would empower the governor to insert a financial manager of his choosing into local government with the ability to cancel union contracts, push aside duly elected local government officials and school board members and take control of Wisconsin cities and towns whenever he sees fit to do so.
Such a law would additionally give Walker unchallenged power to end municipal services of which he disapproves, including safety net assistance to those in need.
Marilyn Davenport’s Racist Email Denounced By OC GOP

Marilyn Davenport, a Tea Party activist and member of the Orange County Republican Party’s central committee, is drawing fire from people in her own party after circulating a racist email depicting President Barack Obama and his parents as chimpanzees. In the email: “Now you know why — No birth certificate!”
The OC Weekly broke the story and were able to reach Davenport for comment. Her response:
“Oh, come on! Everybody who knows me knows that I am not a racist. It was a joke. I have friends who are black. Besides, I only sent it to a few people–mostly people I didn’t think would be upset by it.”
CBS interviewed former chairman of the California Republican Party Michael Schroeder, who says that this email is Davenport’s third strike. He is calling for her resignation, citing two previous incidents in which Davenport defended the racist actions of two fellow Orange County conservatives.
The first was during President Obama’s inauguration, when Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose forwarded an email depicting a watermelon patch on the White House lawn to several people. According to Schroeder, Davenport defended Grose amidst calls for his resignation.

Between the president’s speech on debt and then trying to figure out how to stump you on the p-Op quiz, I wasn’t able to get around to the quote of the week. You know the one I’m talking about.
In a radio interview yesterday with legendary New York Post political columnist Fred Dicker, Donald Trump said, “I have a great relationship with the blacks. I’ve always had a very great relationship with the blacks.” I heard this profession of being down with the people and immediately Tweeted the jarring comment with the hashtag #ohreally.
I was able to sound off on this a little bit last night with Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC’s “The Last Word.”
“He doesn’t have a relationship with me,” I said. The Donald was asked his reaction to a recent poll showing a racial disparity in support for President Obama. If you couldn’t figure it out, “the blacks” overwhelmingly support Obama. “The whites,” not so much.
Look, I’m a user of the offending phraseology. One of my favorites is “the gays.” As in, “I’m writing about the gays today.” Or “the gays are workin’ my last nerve today.” Anyone listening knows my tongue is firmly planted in cheek and my eye rolls are playful. Besides, being one of “the gays” gives me license to have fun at my own expense. Trump has no such license for “the blacks.”

In their first appearance on the show (which airs at 10 a.m. ET on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network), the first lady and Dr. Jill Biden will discuss their military family support campaign, the Joining Forces Initiative.
A week later, Michelle and her husband, President Barack Obama, will tape their first joint interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” since 2006. It will air on May 2. Winfrey’s show goes dark at the end of that month after 25 years on air.

Nicolas Cage Arrested In New Orleans For Domestic Abuse, Disturbing The Peace

Life imitating art? Shortly after playing a troubled, abusive New Orleans cop in Bad Lieutenant, actor Nicolas Cage has been arrested today in the same city for two counts of domestic abuse and disturbing the peace, TMZ reports. TMZ is also displaying a weary photo of the actor they are calling a “mug shot,” though no word on whether this is an official photo.
While TMZ only has the news that he has been arrested and what for, The Hollywood Reporter has a few more sparse details, specifying battery as the domestic abuse charge:
He was charged with domestic abuse – battery and disturbing the peace at 6:33 a.m.
According to police records, he was still in custody as of noon ET Saturday, although police dispatcher would not confirm that to The Hollywood Reporter.

Why Threats to Medicare/Medicaid for Younger People Fail: Grandma is Taking Care of the Kids

The Paul Ryan Budget defenders have today’s talking point that Democrats are “scaring seniors” about Medicare and Medicaid changes, and that seniors don’t have to think about opposing the Ryan plan because only those under 55 are affected.
Oh really?
The Pew Research Center reported last fall that these days, one in ten children live with a grandparent. This number is up considerably since the start of the recession. At least 50% of grandparents have been a caregiver to a grandchild in the past year.
For the most part, grandparent caregivers have very limited financial resources. Nearly one-in-five (18%) are living below the poverty line, while 47% have household incomes that fall between one- and three-times the poverty line. In comparison, among the population ages 50 and older, 8% are below the poverty line, and 32% are living on an income that is between one- and three-times the poverty rate.
It’s very difficult to find national numbers for Medicaid, but this pdf report shows 30.3% of children nationwide were covered by Medicaid/CHIP, and 10.2 percent of children were uninsured. Grandparents raising grandchildren DEPEND on health care programs for younger people, to insure their families.
Pitting one generation against another, in an effort to gut Medicare and Medicaid, is guaranteed to fail. Contrary to what Randite Republicans preach, we live in a society that is inter-dependent, one generation on the other. Grandmas across the country have plenty reason to tell the Republican Party, “don’t pull the plug on my grandchildren.”

Randal Pinkett: From Trump through Economic Slump, the Guy’s a Winner Un-snookered by Snooki

In late 2005, Randal Pinkett won season four of Donald Trump’s The Apprentice. Pinkett would become the first person from a minority group to win the show. The prize is to work, for one year, on a project with the Trump Organization. Fast-forward six years and Randal states he continues to have dealings with Trump.
Mr Pinkett believes “The Donald” might well be serious about a Presidential run. He added that he will support President Obama even if his former boss is on the Republican ticket. In 2009, Pinkett had his own brush with politics, when he was considered as a potential candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey, under John Corzine. He doesn’t rule out the possibility of seeking political office in the future.
Randal slowly started forming his company, BCT Partners, while still in college. He partnered in the venture with some of his classmates. 15 years later, he shares with us that it’s a multimillion dollar corporation. Pinkett holds five degrees from three universities: Oxford, MIT and Rutgers. On the subject of Rutgers, Pinkett believes $32,000 was a lot of money to give reality star Snooki – someone whose educational credentials end with a high school diploma. He believes she doesn’t set the best example for young people.
For anyone looking for ideas on reinventing themselves professionally, starting a business, marketing themselves and generating more income, Pinkett provides plenty of ways to survive and thrive in the current economy. He also provides insight into where business and the economy are today; he believes the government hasn’t focused on small business enough.

Wall Street Presses Republicans to Reach a Deal on Debt Ceiling

During a recent series of meetings and fund-raisers, top Wall Street executives and lobbyists have urged Republicans to resolve the debt-ceiling debate quickly or risk turmoil in the bond market.
In the sessions, House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) explained the politics of the vote to investors, telling them Republicans won’t approve an increase in how much the U.S. can borrow without a long-term deficit-reduction plan, according to people familiar with his remarks. In turn, the executives said delaying a resolution could unnerve skittish credit markets.
Rep. Spencer Bachus (R., Ala.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said executives he met in New York Sunday and Monday warned of the “negative implications” of failing to extend the debt ceiling. Mr. Bachus said his role as chairman required him to make the point to fellow Republicans that letting the matter drift into the summer could hurt markets.
The U.S.’s borrowing limit, a precise number set by Congress, has become central to Washington’s debate over spending and debt. The House GOP has said that it won’t vote to raise the limit, currently $14.294 trillion, without a commitment from the Senate and White House to pare spending.
President Barack Obama acknowledged as much in an interview with the Associated Press on Friday. Mr. Boehner is “absolutely right that it’s not going to happen without some spending cuts,” he said. He also warned that failure to raise the debt limit “could plunge the world economy back into recession.”

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), an ultra-conservative who believes Social Security is dying because of legal abortion, said recently that he feels the Republican budget does not go far enough in restricting medical care for senior citizens.
Unlike Rep. Paul Ryan and the GOP leadership, which has excluded today’s seniors from their plan to destroy Medicare, Santorum wants “most” kicked off the program, and he said so in a recent interview with Fox News conservative opinion host Sean Hannity.
President Obama has said the Republican plan to privatize Medicare is essentially a death knell for the hugely popular public health program, which would be done away with and converted into a voucher program that provides a small stipend for health costs.
The Congressional Budget Office said the Republican plan would increase medical costs for seniors by at least 25 percent over the next 20 years.
In a recent poll, most Republican voters said they wanted Medicare left alone.
Santorum has said he is likely running for president in 2012.

Pandemonium! Dems Jam Republicans With Even More Conservative Budget

What was supposed to be a routine vote in the House — to knock down an amendment authored by conservative Republicans — turned into pandemonium on the House floor Friday, as Democrats tried to jam the plan through, and hang it around the GOP’s necks.
The vote was on the Republican Study Committee’s alternative budget — a radical plan that annihilates the social contract in America by putting the GOP budget on steroids. Deeper tax cuts for the wealthy, more severe entitlement rollbacks.
Normally something like that would fail by a large bipartisan margin in either the House or the Senate. Conservative Republicans would vote for it, but it would be defeated by a coalition of Democrats and more moderate Republicans. But today that formula didn’t hold. In an attempt to highlight deep divides in the Republican caucus. Dems switched their votes — from “no” to “present.”
Panic ensued. In the House, legislation passes by a simple majority of members voting. The Dems took themselves out of the equation, leaving Republicans to decide whether the House should adopt the more-conservative RSC budget instead of the one authored by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan. As Dems flipped to present, Republicans realized that a majority of their members had indeed gone on the record in support of the RSC plan — and if the vote closed, it would pass. That would be a slap in the face to Ryan, and a politically toxic outcome for the Republican party.

Former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan is defending Donald Trump against charges of racial insensitivity.
On a conservative radio show Thursday, Trump said that he was concerned that he wouldn’t get many African American votes given President Barack Obama’s high poll numbers with that demographic.
“I have a great relationship with the blacks,” Trump said. “I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks.”
“I don’t find any malice in what he said in that statement about the black folks,” Buchanan told MSNBC host Chris Jansing Friday. “I mean, I’m a Catholic and if he said ‘I have a great relationship with the Catholics,’ I don’t think I would take great offense.”
“Well, Pat, you know it’s a completely different dynamic,” journalist Karen Hunter objected. “Give me a break.”
“What do you think he meant?” Buchanan asked.
“It’s that thing: ‘you people,'” Hunter replied. “We’re not aliens. We’re Americans.”
“Maybe you’re hearing something Donald Trump didn’t really say,” Buchanan suggested.
“I think you can listen to it and it’s very clear what ‘The Donald’ had to say,” Jansing concluded.
It’s not surprising the old racist Pat Buchanan wouldn’t think what Trump said was offensive!
