Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African-American teenager, was shot and killed in a gated community in Florida late last month by a white neighborhood watch captain, according to police. But the watch captain, George Zimmerman — a 26-year-old college student who has admitted to police that he shot the young man — still walks free. And Martin’s family is pleading for answers and demanding justice.
At this point there are more questions than answers in the young man’s death, but this much is known: Martin was packing little more than a bag of candy and a canned iced tea on the night he was killed.
“He had a gun, and Trayvon had Skittles,” Benjamin Crump, a family attorney, told The Huffington Post this afternoon.
Martin, 17, a high school junior who lived with his mother in Miami, was visiting his father and stepmother at their home in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando, on the weekend of Feb. 26. During halftime of the NBA All-Star Game, Martin’s family said he walked to a nearby convenience store to get some candy for his younger brother. On his way back home, according to reports, he caught the attention of George Zimmerman, a 26-year-old college student and self-appointed captain of The Retreat at Twin Lakes neighborhood watch.
Zimmerman, armed with a 9mm handgun, trailed the boy in his car. At some point, Zimmerman called 911, telling the operator there was a “suspicious person in the area,” according to a police report acquired by HuffPost.

Newly available documents reveal conflicting accounts of a violent relationship in the past of George Zimmerman, the Sanford man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month.
The court records concern a conflict between Zimmerman and his ex-fiancée, who filed a petition accusing Zimmerman of pushing her during an argument at her Orlando home in August 2005.
The woman reported Zimmerman had arrived at her home Aug. 8 and asked to talk. Later, when she asked him to leave, she said, he insisted on staying and demanded documents she had.
The woman said she offered to drop the papers off the following day, but Zimmerman became upset, took her cellphone and shoved her. A fight ensued, she said, and her dog bit Zimmerman’s cheek.

Hundreds of students at Carol City High School in Miami Gardens held a massive walk out Thursday to protest the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and the lack of an arrest in the case.
Trayvon, who was a junior at Michael Krop Senior High in Miami, attended Carol City High during his freshman and sophomore years.
At around 12:30 p.m., the Carol City High students walked out of the school, at 3422 NW 187th Street.
Drivers in the area were stunned as hundreds of students filled the streets and sidewalks. The walk out brought traffic to a standstill until the teenagers passed.
According to Miami Gardens police, the school principal sanctioned an on-campus peaceful demonstration to take place on the school field. However, some of the students took it upon themselves to leave campus. Police say they are ensuring the safety of the students and not taking any police action.

A Seminole County grand jury, as well as the U.S. Department of Justice, will investigate the Trayvon Martin case, the racially-charged fatal shooting of an unarmed black 17-year-old in Sanford.
State Attorney Norm Wolfinger this morning released a prepared statement, saying he would have a county grand jury hear evidence April 10. His office, with the help of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, is reviewing and collecting evidence in the case, his statement said.
“I respectfully request that the public remain patient as this process moves forward,” said his statement.
Also, the Department of Justice said in a statement late Monday that it will conduct a “thorough and independent review.”
That would not be a murder or manslaughter investigation but a parallel one into whether the shooter, George Zimmerman, 28, violated Trayvon’s civil rights.
He was killed about 7:15 p.m. Feb. 26 as he walked through a gated community in Sanford, returning from 7-Eleven, where he’d bought Skittles and a can of Arizona Iced Tea.

Zimmerman violated major principles of the Neighborhood Watch manual, ABC News has learned.
The manual from the Neighborhood Watch program states: “It should be emphasized to members that they do not possess police powers. And they shall not carry weapons or pursue vehicles.”
According to Chris Tutko, the director of the National Neighborhood Watch program, there are about 22,000 registered watch groups nationwide, and Zimmerman was not part of a registered group, which police were not aware of at the time of the incident.

In a cell phone call moments before his death, Trayvon Martin told a teenage girl he “was being hounded by a strange man on a cellphone who ran after him, cornered him and confronted him.” The girl recounted the call, which is confirmed by phone logs, to ABC News:
“He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man,” Martin’s friend said. “I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run.”
Eventually he would run, said the girl, thinking that he’d managed to escape. But suddenly the strange man was back, cornering Martin.
“Trayvon said, ‘What, are you following me for,’ and the man said, ‘What are you doing here.’ Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the head set just fell.
The new information about the phone call casts further doubt on the account George Zimmerman, Martin’s killer, told the police. The Miami Herald reported Zimmerman told the police “he had stepped out of his truck to check the name of the street he was on when Trayvon attacked him from behind as he walked back to his truck.”

I hadn’t paid much attention to the Trayvon Martin case until yesterday, but I can now understand why it is generating so much outrage. For all that it resembles a hundred old-school “police brutality” cases where a young black male met a bad end in a murky encounters with white men in authority, it’s actually something different: a lesson in what might happen when a society decides to deliberately supplement its police forces by heavily arming citizens and hoping they act responsibly.
Sometimes they don’t, and sometimes, moreover, if you pass laws designed to give people the benefit of doubt when they are defending themselves you can give vigilantes a license to hunt and kill. The more we learn about the Martin case, the more it looks like that is exactly what happened, with the injustice compounded by the tendency of the actual authorities in Florida to take the side of a gun-toting neighorhood ethnic cleanser with an attitude and an arrest record against un unarmed black teenager brandishing a bag of Skittles and just trying to get out of harm’s way.
It says a lot about the resonance of this case that an African-American conservative like John McWhorter would say the following about the refusal (so far) of the authorities to do anything about the shooter, George Zimmerman:

Mounting pressure in Trayvon Martin case succeeds in getting a federal probe
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the FBI will step in to investigate the killing of Miami Gardens teenager Trayvon Martin, the U.S. Department of Justice announced late Monday.
The announcement coincided with a statement from Florida Gov. Rick Scott asking the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to offer “appropriate resources” in the case.
The federal and state agencies are intervening in what attorneys call a botched investigation into the killing of the Michael Krop Senior High School student, who was killed Feb. 26 in Sanford, a town of 55,000 just north of Orlando. The teen, on suspension from school, was staying at his father’s girlfriend’s house when he stepped out to 7-Eleven to buy candy and iced tea.
A neighborhood watch volunteer with a long history of calling in everything from open garage doors to “suspicious characters” called police to say he spotted someone who looked drugged, was walking too slowly in the rain, and appeared to be looking at people’s houses. Zimmerman sounded alarmed, because the stranger had his hand in his waistband and had something in his other hand.
The unarmed teen carried Skittles and Arizona iced tea.

SANFORD, Fla. – U.S Representative Corrine Brown and Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett will request an immediate review by the U.S. Attorney General’s office in the shooting death of a Sanford teen.
Brown met with the Sanford Police Chief, the mayor and city manager to inform them of her request on Friday.
Brown will also meet with the Martin family Friday night.
Brown told Local 6 she came to town after getting numerous calls from constituents complaining of the shooting death investigation of Trayvon Martin, 17.
“There are many things with this case that were not done correctly,” Brown said outside of Sanford police headquarters. She didn’t go into detail about what exactly she meant.
Brown said one man even flew to Washington, D.C. to meet with her.
“People don’t think the system is working.” Brown said. “I’m hear to see that it does.”
Brown said Sanford city officials were open and cooperative to an outside investigation.

WFTV, a local Florida television station, reports that the supervising officer who initially responded to the killing of Trayvon Martin in Sanford has a prior record of racial controversy. In 2010, Sergeant Anthony Raimondo declined to arrest Justin Collison, who brutally attacked a black homeless man, leaving him unconscious and breaking his nose. Collison, who is white, is the son of a Sanford police officer and the grandson of a former Florida judge.
Collison was intoxicated at the time of the unprovoked attack. Also, a Youtube video captured the attack while it occurred. Despite having possession of the video, Raimando still refused to arrest Collison. Police only arrested Collison after the national media released the video and criticized police handling of the case.
Trayvon’s parents were just on Alex Witt’s sho pleding for justice for their son. He was pleading for help. It makes no sense that he wa a threat and zimmerman states it was self defense.

Justice Department Investigation Is Sought in Florida Teenager’s Shooting Death

MIAMI — Nearly three weeks after an unarmed teenager was killed in a small city north of Orlando, stirring an outcry, a few indisputable facts remain: the teenager, who was black, was carrying nothing but a bag of Skittles, some money and a can of iced tea when he was shot. The neighborhood crime watch volunteer who got out of his car and shot him is white and Hispanic. He has not been arrested and is claiming self-defense.
Beyond that, however, little is clear about the Feb. 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17.
As criticism of the police investigation mounts, so too do the calls for swift action in a case with heavy racial overtones. Protests grow larger each week, and lawyers for the family are now asking the Department of Justice to intervene. The case also brings into sharp focus Florida’s self-defense laws, which give people who feel threatened greater latitude in defending themselves than most states.
The police in of Sanford, where the shooting took place, are not revealing details of the investigation. Late Friday night, after weeks of pressure, the police played the 911 calls in the case for the family and gave copies to the news media. On the recordings, one shot, an apparent warning or miss, is heard, followed by a voice begging or pleading, and a cry. A second shot is then heard, and the pleading stops.
“It is so clear that this was a 17-year-old boy pleading for his life, and someone shot him in cold blood,” said Natalie Jackson, one of the Martin family lawyers.

As people entered the church, they were asked to sign a petition that called for the prosecution of George Zimmerman, the white crime watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Feb. 26.
“We come together today in the name of justice,” said Pastor Valerie Henry. “We stand as his voice.”
The crowd cheered, clapped and shouted “Amen” as leaders for the NAACP, the Urban League and the Sanford City Commission pledged to fight for justice.

ABC News has uncovered questionable police conduct in the investigation of the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white neighborhood watch captain in Florida, including the alleged “correction” of at least one eyewitness’ account.
Sanford Police Chief Billy Lee said there is no evidence to dispute self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman’s assertion that he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin out of self-defense.
“Until we can establish probable cause to dispute that, we don’t have the grounds to arrest him,” Lee said.
Martin had been staying at his father’s girlfriend’s house during the night of the NBA All-Star game Feb. 26.
The teenager went out to get some Skittles and a can of ice tea. On his way back into the gated suburban Orlando community, Martin, wearing a hood, was spotted by Zimmerman, 28.
According to law enforcement sources who heard Zimmerman’s call to a non-emergency police number, he told a dispatcher “these a..holes always get away.”
Zimmerman described Martin as suspicious because he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and walking slowly in the rain, police later told residents at a town hall.
A dispatcher told him to wait for a police cruiser, and not leave his vehicle.
But about a minute later, Zimmerman left his car wearing a red sweatshirt and pursued Martin on foot between two rows of townhouses, about 70 yards from where the teen was going.
Lee said Zimmerman’s pursuit of Martin did not of itself constitute a crime.
Witnesses told ABC News a fist fight broke out and at one point Zimmerman, who outweighed Martin by more than 100 pounds, was on the ground and that Martin was on top.
Austin Brown, 13, was walking his dog during the time of the altercation and saw both men on the ground but separated.
Brown along with several other residents heard someone cry for help, just before hearing a gunshot. Police arrived 60 seconds later and the teen was quickly pronounced dead.
According to the police report, Zimmerman, who was armed with a handgun, was found bleeding from the nose and the back of the head, standing over Martin, who was unresponsive after being shot.

Now I don’t know about you, but if some weirdo was following me in a car and then all of a sudden, he’s out of his car, not showing me a badge and confronting me, I would try to kick his behind as well. Benjamin Crump, the Martin family’s attorney, filed a public records lawsuit last week seeking the 911 recordings for the night of the shooting. Crump said people with access to the tapes told him Zimmerman made a comment about Martin’s race during the call and said he had no intention of letting the youth get away because, “they always get away.”

Trayvon Martin was only 17 years old when he was gunned down by Neighborhood Watch captain George Zimmerman. All Trayvon did was go to the store to get his brother some Skittles. Zimmerman saw an unfamiliar young black teen in his gated community and took it on himself to confront and ultimately kill him. Zimmerman was not arrested and remains free. Not only is the State’s Attorney Norman Wolfinger not prosecuting, he is withholding evidence from Trayvon’s family. Let him know that child killers need to be prosecuted. George Zimmerman, Neighborhood Watch Captain Who Shot Trayvon Martin, Charged With Violence Before
SANFORD, FL (CNN/WFTV) – The mother of a teenager shot and killed while walking in his father’s neighborhood rallied with several community members outside of the police department in Sanford, FL, demanding justice.
They want the man who admitted to shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin arrested.
“This man that took this baby life, he needs to be incarcerated,” said demonstrator Michale Medlock.
George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain that shot Martin shortly after calling police about a suspicious black person, ignored dispatcher’s advice to wait for police and confronted the teen. Martin, who had gone to a nearby store for skittles and tea, was shot in the chest by Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was previously arrested in 2005 for battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
