Obama knocks Republican ‘flat earth crowd’
President Obama wrapped up his two-day energy tour on a political note today, saying that Republicans are trying to fool people into thinking that more oil drilling will lower gas prices.
“We can’t simply drill our way out of the problem,” Obama said during a speech at Ohio State University in Columbus.
The president also criticized Republicans because they “make fun” of alternative energy programs, such as bio-fuels, and he repeated a joke from last week: If the Republicans had been around in Christopher Columbus’ time, they would have been founding members of the Flat Earth Society.
“The flat earth crowd,” Obama said of the Republicans at another point.
Republicans said prices are rising at the pump in part because of Obama regulatory rules that are reducing potential oil production. “It’s clear the president is on defense on energy,” said Republican Party spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.
“As Americans continue to struggle with increasing costs on everything from gas, to food, to health care, they know they simply cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama’s failed policies,” Kukowski said.
At Ohio State, Obama said domestic oil production is at record levels right now, but that won’t help with gas prices. An “all-of-the-above” energy policy is required, he said, including new sources like solar and wind power that can be developed with government help.
