Steppenwolf is a North American[1][2] rock group that was prominent in the late 1960s. The group was formed in 1968 in Los Angeles by vocalist John Kay, guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, keyboardist Goldy McJohn and drummer Jerry Edmonton after the dissolution of Toronto group The Sparrows, formed by John Kay in the early 60s, of which only Moreve was not a member.[3]
The band has sold more than 25 million records worldwide,[citation needed] releasing eight gold albums and twelve Billboard Hot 100 singles of which six were Top 40 hits,[4] including three Top 10 successes: “Born to Be Wild“, “Magic Carpet Ride“, and “Rock Me”. Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1974, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. Today, frontman John Kay is the only original member left, having served as lead singer for more than 40 years since 1963.

Romney Campaign Confirms He Would End Obama’s DREAM Directive
Mitt Romney tried to moderate his immigration positions on Monday before tonight’s debate in Colorado when he said he would not take away the temporary visas from undocumented immigrants who benefit from Obama’s deferred action policy. “I’m not going to take something that they’ve purchased,” he told The Denver Post. He added that before those two-year visas expire, “we will have the full immigration reform plan that I’ve proposed,” although he gave no details about his immigration plan.
Today, his campaign confirmed to the New York Times that Romney would end the program to grant deportation deferrals to young undocumented immigrants who qualify:

Claire McCaskill raises nearly $6 million in the third quarter

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) raised a whopping $5.8 million dollars during the third quarter, a huge haul that is more than double what she brought in during the previous three-month period.
McCaskill’s impressive number adds to the woes of embattled Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), who has struggled to raise money in his bid against the first-term Democrat. Akin has not released his third quarter total.

In Search of Votes, Billionaire-Backed Anti-Obama Groups Distribute Expensive Gifts
…Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the nonprofit financed by David Koch and other wealthy Republican businessmen, has spent some $31 million on anti-Obama ads since April. The group recently opened 98 Get-Out-the-Vote offices, hired some 200 field staffers and has been distributing its state-of-the-art voter-targeting technology on Samsung tablet computers to its volunteers. Now AFP is hoping to win hearts and minds with gifts of free gas.
AFP is hosting events at gas stations across the country to provide gasoline to motorists for the price of $1.84 per gallon. The group is paying for up to fifteen gallons for 100–150 drivers at each station, telling them that the $1.84 price symbolizes the price per a gallon before Obama took office in 2009.

Obama, Dems enjoy favorability edge

The new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll notes that Mitt Romney’s favorability rating is still underwater: “[I]t’s lower than every other presidential nominee’s score at this similar point of time in the history of the poll — except for George H.W. Bush’s 34-52 rating in October 1992.” The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll shows very similar results.
It’s safe to say the “47 percent” video took a severe toll on the Republican’s public standing.
But looking over the internals (pdf) of the NBC poll, it’s not just Romney with a problem — it’s his party.

The politics of economic optimism

We talked last week about Americans’ improving optimism about the economy, and the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll bolsters the thesis.
As the report noted, “57 percent think that the U.S. economy is recovering, versus 39 percent who disagree with that notion. And four in 10 now say the country is headed in the right direction, which is the highest percentage on this question since June 2009.”
Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted this survey with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, added, “We have a different feeling about the economy than we did this summer.”

Tucker Carlson Fails at Trolling
I don’t really think there’s much point in dignifying the “bombshell” which Tucker Carlson and Drudge claim to have uncorked yesterday evening. My neighbor David Graham offers a summary:
For several hours, the Drudge Report has been teasing that a bombshell video will air on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Tuesday night — some of it while linking to a page for donations on Mitt Romney’s site. Now BuzzFeed thinks it has found the video he’s talking about, based on clues in his teases.
The video isn’t actually new — it’s been on YouTube since June 2007. You catch watch it below. Andrew Sullivan posted the transcript on The Atlantic the same year.
It’s interesting that Carlson’s claimed that he was offering a big reveal, despite the fact that many in the media covered the video at the time — including Tucker Carlson.
Carlson’s descent from reasonably credible magazine journalist to inept race hustler is well mapped territory. He has not been the same man since Jon Stewart took him down. The ethering reverberates through the years with such force that we now find its recipient slathering yesterday’s nothing-burgers in weak sauce, and serving them up as the daily special.
Even those who would like to be fooled are not.
“What’s the ‘So what’ of this video? I don’t think it’s going to really go anywhere,” Republican Rep. Allen West said on Fox News.
This is not a vetting. It is a flim-flam. And it will not work.

‘I call them Americans for Their Prosperity’

The Koch brothers’ Americans for Prosperity is spending roughly $1 million in Arkansas this year, which seems rather strange given that the state isn’t competitive at the presidential level, has no gubernatorial or U.S. Senate races on the ballot, and no major U.S. House contests.
So why bother? Because Arkansas is the only state left in the South with a Democratically-controlled legislature — and the Kochs apparently consider that unacceptable.
There’s a fair amount of irony to the AFP’s attacks. For one thing, Democratic state lawmakers are being targeted for moving forward with a health care exchange as mandated by federal law, with the attack ads making this look like “cooperation” with “Obamacare.” But if the state legislature didn’t act, Washington would create Arkansas’ exchange for them. These Democrats are discouraging, not inviting, more federal control.

I was talking to my BFF this morning on the train and she said that this nonsense was really simple: Republicans don’t think enough people realize President Obama is black. Like blackety-black black man. I didn’t really get what she meant; but she went on. There are a lot of racist mofos who don’t think they’re racist because they have warm feelings for certain black people in their lives that took care of them. It’s The Help syndrome; they give certain black folks a bit of a pass and they think that’s what America is doing to President Obama. Giving him a pass; because he seems like a “good” Negro.
They want to make sure the USA realizes he’s not. He’s the Negro that thinks Trayvon is like his child, he’s the negro that took Skip Gates side over a cop, he’s the Negro that sat in Trinity all those years and gave a shout out to his pastor at Hampton U, he’s one of those Negroes that white folk have to worry about.

U.S. Private-Sector Employment Increased by 162,000 Jobs in September, According to ADP National Employment Report
Employment in the U.S. nonfarm private business sector increased by 162,000 from August to September, on a seasonally adjusted basis. The estimated gains in previous months were revised lower: The July increase was reduced by 17,000 to an increase of 156,000, while the August increase was reduced by 12,000 to an increase of 189,000.
Employment in the private, service-providing sector expanded 144,000 in September, down from 175,000 in August. Employment in the private, good-producing sector added 18,000 jobs in the September. Manufacturing employment rose 4,000, while construction employment rose 10,000, the strongest since March when mild winter weather was boosting construction activity. The financial services sector added 7,000 jobs in September, marking the fourteenth consecutive monthly gain.
Employment on large payrolls – those with 500 or more workers – increased 17,000 and employment on medium payrolls – those with 50 to 499 workers – rose 64,000 in September. Employment on small payrolls – those with up to 49 workers – rose 81,000 that same period. Of the 64,000 jobs created on medium-sized payrolls, 10,000 jobs were created by the goods-producing sector and 54,000 jobs were created by the service-providing sector.

One night last May, some twenty financiers and politicians met for dinner in the Tuscany private dining room at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. The eight-course meal included blinis with caviar; a fennel, grapefruit, and pomegranate salad; cocoa-encrusted beef tenderloin; and blue-cheese panna cotta. The richest man in the room was Leon Cooperman, a Bronx-born, sixty-nine-year-old billionaire. Cooperman is the founder of a hedge fund called Omega Advisors, but he has gained notice beyond Wall Street over the past year for his outspoken criticism of President Obama. Cooperman formalized his critique in a letter to the President late last year which was widely circulated in the business community; in an interview and in a speech, he has gone so far as to draw a parallel between Obama’s election and the rise of the Third Reich.
The most electric moment of the evening, though, was an exchange between Cooperman and Gore.
—-Cooperman searches for companies that are cheap and which he hopes to sell when they become dear. (In 1998, Cooperman made a foray into emerging markets, investing more than a hundred million dollars as part of a bid to take over Azerbaijan’s state oil company, but it went badly wrong. His firm lost most of its money and paid five hundred thousand dollars to settle a U.S.-government bribery investigation.) Cooperman had come to the dinner to give Gore a copy of the letter he’d written to President Obama. “I’d like you to read this,” he told the former Vice-President. “You owe me a small favor. I voted for you,” he said, referring to Gore’s Presidential run, in 2000.
In the letter, Cooperman argued that Obama has needlessly antagonized the rich by making comments that are hostile to economic success. The prose, rife with compound metaphors and righteous indignation, is a good reflection of Cooperman’s table talk. “The divisive, polarizing tone of your rhetoric is cleaving a widening gulf, at this point as much visceral as philosophical, between the downtrodden and those best positioned to help them,” Cooperman wrote. “It is a gulf that is at once counterproductive and freighted with dangerous historical precedents.”
At the dinner, Al Gore was diplomatic when presented with the letter, and asked Cooperman if he would accept higher taxes. Cooperman said that he would—if he was treated with respect, and the government didn’t squander his money. Cooperman asked Gore what he thought the top marginal tax rate should be. Gore’s reply was noncommittal, but he pleased the group by suggesting that no matter who wins in November the victor should surround himself with advisers with experience in the private sector.
Kramer, the hedge-fund manager and Obama fund-raiser, was quiet, but others in the room were enthusiastic. Villaraigosa gave Cooperman his direct phone number.
Scaramucci, the organizer of the dinner, told me the next day that the guests had witnessed the “activation” of a “sleeper cell” of hedge-fund managers against Obama. “That’s what you see happening in the hedge-fund community, because they now have the power, because of Citizens United, to aggregate capital into political-action committees and to influence the debate,” he said.
