CHICAGO — A funeral service is under way for a 15-year-old Chicago girl whose killing has brought national attention to Chicago’s staggering gun violence.
The service began Saturday with a standing ovation for “the strength of this family.”
Hadiya (huh-DYE’-yuh) Pendleton was a band majorette who was shot and killed just a few days after performing for events surrounding President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Police say Pendleton was an innocent victim in a gang-related shooting.
First lady Michelle Obama was among a long list of dignitaries present. She met privately with the family before the start of the service and accompanied the girl’s mother to the open casket.
Obama put her arm around Cleopatra Pendleton and patted her back as the woman threw her head back and started wailing.

First Lady Michelle Obama is planning on attending the Saturday funeral services for slain teenager Hadiya Pendleton, who has become a national symbol for the growing problem of gun and gang violence in the city of Chicago.
Obama will be accompanied at the funeral by Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to the president, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
President Obama Calls Family Of Hadiya Pendleton
CHICAGO (CBS) — President Obama called the family of a Chicago teenager who was gunned down about a mile from his Kenwood neighborhood home this week.
Courtney Maxwell, the pastor for Hadiya Pendleton, said the president called to express his condolences and said it meant a lot to the Pendleton family. Maxwell did not provide any details about the conversation.

Video clip added in thread. The interview was heart-wrenching to watch and listen to, but so necessary. Prayers to Cleo Cowley and her family. IIt’s a call no mother ever expects to receive… “sorry mam; your child has been shot and killed.” Just gut-busting insane.

I hear about violence in my city all the time, but this one hit hard.
Just heart-breaking…. I can’t imagine what Hadiya’s parents and brother are experiencing.
Hadiya does matter. And the more those NRA fools try to hang on to their guns….it won’t stop until someone in NRA leadership becomes DIRECTLY affected. Everybody trying to blame Chi-town for this child’s death, but the reality is, Chicago has very strict gun control laws, and the fools who opened fire and didn’t know what the hell he was aiming at, probably got that heater from Indiana, where there’s no wait to get a heater, but you sure as hell better not try to get your drink on after church on Sundays.
Okay, rant over. Honestly, is it me, or the more the NRA fools open their mouths, someone else goes off, starts shooting up the joint and further demonstrate the need for national gun control laws?
I’m so ANGRY that the NRA is getting most of camera time; if nothing more, every time they do open their mouths, it illustrates their utter DERANGEMENT/OBSESSION with guns.
