The Moment Netroots Nation Turned Into CPAC
Sunday, June 23, 2013 | Posted by Spandan C at 2:37 PM
What is the key difference between liberals and right wingers? Sure, we have different issue positions, but the difference is deeper than that. Liberals let the facts guide the debate, and conservative wingbats shout down facts they do not like. So Nancy Pelosi went to Netroots Nation in San Jose, CA last night and stated an incontrovertible fact: Edward Snowden violated the law.
The reaction?
Speaking at Netroots Nation in San Jose, the House Democratic leader said Snowden “did violate the law in terms of releasing those documents,” prompting loud boos and heckling from the crowd.
Nancy Pelosi got booed for stating a fact: Edward Snowden violated the law. When facts begin to get booed because they poke holes into your ideological bubble, I humbly suggest you lose the ‘progressive’ label.
This is to say nothing of the fact that the attendees who are effectively supporting someone who is at the least a coward who illegally released classified information, partly fabricated his own story, and who is at worst guilty of betraying his country – our country. This is to say nothing of people who describe themselves as ‘progressive’ advocating for a man who does not have the courage of his conviction to face the music after claiming having done an act of conscience. And this is to say nothing of the fact that they are defending a man whose idea of protesting surveillance is to do it from China.

Paula Deen Scandal Continues As Employees Tell Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Of Alleged Discrimination
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution | By Fran Jeffries and Wayne Washington Posted: 06/23/2013 1:18 am EDT | Updated: 06/23/2013 9:43 am EDT
An attorney for the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition said current and former Paula Deen employees told him the famous cook and her brother discriminated against black employees, one of whom was consistently referred to as “my little monkey.”
After Deen acknowledged using a racial slur, the story went viral and the Food Network announced on Friday that it would not renew her contract when it expires at the end of June.
Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, are being sued by Lisa T. Jackson, a former employee who claims she endured a hostile work environment replete with racial slurs.
Robert Patillo, an attorney for Rainbow/PUSH, a civil rights group founded by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jr., said one current and two former employees told him white employees are routinely paid more than black employees and are promoted more quickly. A black man who had threatened to go to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Deen’s brother told him “you don’t have any civil rights here,” Rainbow/PUSH said in a press release.
Rainbow/PUSH said it has “found evidence of systemic racial discimination and harassment” by Deen and that “a family member consistently referred to a black cook as ‘my little monkey.'”
Patillo, who conducted interviews in Savannah where Deen’s restaurant is located, said current and former employees told him that Deen “preferred white and light-skinned blacks to work with customers” and that darker-skinned blacks were relegated to “back-of-the-house operations.”
Patillo said employees have been reluctant to talk to him about their experience with Deen because they fear retaliation.
Deen could not be reached on Saturday for comment on the Rainbow/PUSH allegations.

“My little monkey” This shit is straight out of the 1800 plantation days. Good riddance to Paula Deen and all her CaC racists siblings!
My little monkey? Just wow!
Deen & CO. long for the good old days; in fact, they’ve been living as if they’ve never left. They need to pay for the damage they’ve caused their employees. I can’t imagine them going this long without saying anything.
Nelson Mandela now in ‘critical’ condition
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2013/06/23/mandela-condition-worsens/2450391/
Nelson Mandela was in critical condition Sunday after a deterioration in his health, and doctors “are doing everything possible” for him, South Africa’s government said.
The office of President Jacob Zuma said that on Sunday evening the president had visited Mandela, the former president of the country who was imprisoned for nearly three decades as he battled the country’s apartheid system of racial separatism.
Zuma’s office said he was informed by Mandela’s doctors that his condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.
Mandela, 94, has been in intensive care for more than two weeks. He was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.
“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable,” Zuma said in a statement. “He is in good hands.”

Greenwald and the Guardian try again, only this time there’s warrants
Posted on June 23, 2013 by jreid
Glenn Greenwald, the blogger-polemicist turned Guardian columnist, finally got his walk in the sun, when a disgruntled hacker type named Edward Snoweden pilfered top secret files from … one of his several (?) top secret clearance NSA contractor jobs and leaked them to Greenwald and the Washington Post. Greenwald’s victory lap across our television screens, from friendly interview to friendly interview (except the one where he lectured the CNN anchor for not being solicitous enough), has been impressive. He finally has given Obama disappointees, emoprogs and civil libertarians of the left and right something to wrap their “Obama is just like Bush” mantra around (expressed with more subtlety by Gary Younge here) while also giving us all an opportunity to laugh dryly at CNET. And he has triggered The National Conversation on national security and the war on terror that the president tried and failed to do in May, when his national security reset speech was greeted with snickers of skepticism and contempt from the ranks of emoprogdom, because drones.
Well the breathless coverage of Snowden has settled into variations on this face –> x_O, due to Snowden having shifted gears from warning that any given IT guy at an NSA contractor has the “authorities” to email-tap the president, expose all our CIA assets, and listen to your calls to grandma, to telling the Chinese and the Russians on us. So maybe “hero” not so much… And now he’s charged with theft of government property and two violations of espionage laws: unlawful distribution of classified material to an unauthorized source, and unlawful dissemination of classified information about communications intelligence (the charges not being quite the Government Sanctioned Hit he darkly warned of… but it’s setting up an extradition drama with Hong Kong anywyay.)
INTERESTING READ: NBC’s justice correspondent Pete Williams explains why Edward Snowden does not qualify as a whistleblower
Which brings us back to Mr. Greenwald, who from his undisclosed location, continues to act as Snowden’s chief promoter and hype man … I mean “journalist” … conducting live web chats!… and otherwise working hard to weave Snowden into a mythic hero of old. (I’m thinking a Gandalf beard might help. Greenwald should have Snowden get working on that…)

Chipotle the first US restaurant chain to go ahead and label all GMOs
In a display of effective consumer activism, Chipotle Mexican Grill has become the first US restaurant chain to go ahead and label all GMOs sold through their locations on the menu. And unlike Whole Foods and other grocers, who are making similar strides but are actually years away from actual implementation, Chipotle has already launched the labeling initiative into existence.
In case you’ve never heard of Chipotle, it is a ‘natural’ Mexican food restaurant that you could say is essentially a fast food hybrid. The chain actually had a major investment from McDonald’s back in 1998, but the fast food titan ultimately divested from Chipotle in 2006. Subsequently, that’s when Chipotle really started to explode with over 500 locations — now hitting 1,400 chain locations with an income of $278 million. In other words, we’re talking about a major fast food chain that is highlighting the issue of GMOs in a way that’s really important.

Nowhere in this Matea Gold piece in the Washington Post is it mentioned that the main reason that super-wealthy Republican donors are not giving money as readily this year is because they were told that the polls were skewed and that Mitt Romney was going to win. Now they don’t believe the fundraisers and consultants anymore. They now believe that they given false assurances; they were bilked; they got conned.
And that is not a good feeling.

10 black child geniuses you should know – Posted on 03/01/2013
If you only watched the evening news or depended on pop culture to paint a picture of young blacks, you would probably think that the majority of black youngsters were only ambitious about sports and music, or caught up in crime and debauchery.
However, the face of black success isn’t limited to the fields that are occupied by Jay-Z, Beyonce and LeBron James. There are a multitude of young blacks who are achieving at a high level in science, math, classical music, chess and other knowledge-based areas and preparing to change society.

New Hospital in Haiti is Fully Powered by 1,800 Solar Panels
Over the past 25 years Partners In Health (PIH) has been working to bring the benefits of modern medical science to poor residents who need it most in mountainous Central Haiti. But here’s the problem: The electric power there is intermittent at best, with random outages for three or more hours every day.[….]
By turning to renewable solar energy to solve these problems the new teaching hospital in Mirebalais, 30 miles north of Port-au-Prince, has landed itself in the forefront of health care innovation around the world. Stretched across the roof of the 200,000-square-foot University Hospital is a vast array of 1,800 solar panels — making it the largest solar-powered hospital in the world that produces more than 100 percent of its required energy every day, an impressive feat for a hospital in the middle of Haiti.[….]

Edward Snowden, the man wanted on U.S. espionage charges, has arrived in Moscow, WikiLeaks said in a Twitter post on Sunday.
The organization has said it helped Snowden leave Hong Kong, but it has not revealed what country could be his final destination.
Snowden, who leaked top-secret details about U.S. surveillance programs, left Hong Kong on Sunday “through a lawful and normal channel,” the Hong Kong government said.
He took off with the help of WikiLeaks, which assisted with his “political asylum in a democratic country, travel papers (and) safe exit from Hong Kong,” the group said on Twitter.
