This week, the President hit the road for a College Affordability bus tour in New York and Pennsylvania, conferred the medal of honor for conspicuous gallantry, and reflected on what the Civil Rights Movement has meant for the country on the anniversary of the March on Washington 50 years ago, at the Let Freedom Ring ceremony on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Their conversation takes place the day after U.S. President Barack Obama presents Rita Dove with the 2011 National Medal of Arts in a ceremony at The White House. She is also a national medalist in the humanities.

    A piece of history that is new to me. What is this about?

    from Grover Cleveland’s 3rd Annual Message (December 1895) paragraph 39:

    As a sequel to the failure of a scheme for the colonization in Mexico of negroes, mostly immigrants from Alabama under contract, a great number of these helpless and suffering people, starving and smitten with contagious disease, made their way or were assisted to the frontier, where, in wretched plight, they were quarantined by the Texas authorities. Learning of their destitute condition, I directed rations to be temporarily furnished them through the War Department. At the expiration of their quarantine they were conveyed by the railway companies at comparatively nominal rates to their homes in Alabama, upon my assurance, in the absence of any fund available for the cost of their transportation, that I would recommend to Congress an appropriation for its payment. I now strongly urge upon Congress the propriety of making such an appropriation. It should be remembered that the measures taken were dictated not only by sympathy and humanity, but by a conviction that it was not compatible with the dignity of this Government that so large a body of our dependent citizens should be thrown for relief upon the charity of a neighboring state.

    I’m not understanding the hysteria.

    I’m an non-interventionist by nature. I feel bad for other folks, but there is little that would make me think that American troops should be sent anywhere.

    The President is asking Congress to do their jobs.

    White House lays out Obama’s itinerary for first trip to Sweden

    President Obama will pay respects to Holocaust humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg and visit the Royal Institute of Technology during his first trip to Sweden next week, White House officials said.

    Obama will stop in Stockholm on Wednesday before traveling to the Group of 20 economic summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Thursday and Friday.

    The president is set to hold a bilateral meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt to discuss trade and international security. Obama also will visit the Great Synagogue in Stockholm to honor the late Wallenberg, a Swede credited with helping save tens of thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary.

    Obama will tour the technology institute, which an administration official described as “on the cutting edge of research.” In the evening, the president is scheduled to join Reinfeldt at a formal dinner that could include other Nordic leaders. Reinfeldt has invited the heads of state of Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Norway, White House officials said.

    At the G-20 summit, Obama will join the leaders of the world’s top 20 economies in several working sessions devoted to job growth, economic development, finance and trade. He will also have several bilateral meetings, but officials did not disclose with which countries.
