Here’s Why Republicans Have No Alternative To Obamacare

Today, the Kaiser Family Foundation has a new poll out about the Affordable Care Act, and as usual the numbers are mixed. 47% of respondents say they want to keep or expand the law. 37% want to repeal it, with or without a Republican replacement.
But here’s the really alarming figure for Republicans who say they favor alternative approaches to improving the health care system. Only 13% said they favor repeal and replacement with a Republican alternative, even though Republicans’ mantra has been “repeal and replace” for years. 24% say Obamacare should be repealed and not replaced at all.
Only 29% of Republicans favor replacing Obamacare with a Republican alternative to Obamacare.
Conservative columnist Philip Klein has a smart piece today for the Washington Examiner, warning his side against Schadenfreude over President Obama’s broken “if you like your health plan, you can keep it” promise.
The kinds of health reform plans that conservative wonks favor will also force many people to change health plans — because the problems with America’s health care system today are inextricably linked to badly designed health plans. Reinforcing the expectation that reform shouldn’t mean having to change your plan will make it harder for conservative reformers to promote their own plans.
But Klein’s message is lost on his side. The constituency for Republican health reform plans consists of Klein and a few dozen people who work for conservative think tanks.
Back in the real world, Republicans spent the last two election cycles hammering Democrats for cutting Medicare. Now they are hammering the president for not letting everyone keep their old plans if they like them. The de-facto Republican health policy platform is a defense of the pre-Obamacare status quo, period, and Republican base voters are with them.
The Schadenfreude is a problem for Klein, but it’s perfectly strategic for actual Republican politicians, who do not care at all about improving the health care system.

On Oct 26th, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter released a statement in response to calls for him to cut ties with Barneys, due to allegations of racial profiling against the luxury department store. Here’s part of what he said:
This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions, as falsely reported. I need to make that fact crystal clear. The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys. This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit.
Well, that settles it then! Nothing to see here. His collaboration is all about educating the kids, not making a profit for himself, right?
Uh…not so fast. You see, Jay left out one lil’ piece of information about his relationship with Barneys….his new fragrance line that will be available there and in Macy’s, which is also facing charges of racial discrimination. WWD reports:
The scent, which he has dubbed Gold Jay Z, will make its debut at Barneys New York on Nov. 20 as part of his exercise in fashion collaboration with the store. That will be followed on Nov. 29, Black Friday, with the rollout of the distribution to 2,000 department stores, led by Macy’s, Sephora, Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Belk, Bon-Ton and Ulta.
But here’s the thing: His new fragrance is NOT a part of the “A New York Holiday” menswear collection that will benefit Jay’s foundation, so the profits from the $55 million in projected sales will go to Barneys, Macy’s, the others stores and Jay Z.
Jay LIED, y’all. He released that bs statement and used his foundation as cover to take the heat off himself. He knew damn well that he had no intentions of severing ties with Barneys, and this announcement of the roll out of his fragrance proves it.
I bet Harry Belafonte is somewhere doing the “Told Ya So” dance.

Rightly or wrongly, freshman Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is seen as the man who is responsible for the recent government shutdown. As a result, a small plurality of Republicans now see Cruz as their party’s leader. That is not helping him deal with the simmering resentment he has aroused on Capitol Hill among his colleagues. On Wednesday, Cruz had to offer an olive branch to infuriated members of his caucus by promising not to openly support the Senate Conservatives Fund’s efforts to defeat them in next year’s primaries.
The day before, the SCF had announced that they would spend $330,000 to try to defeat Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. They had already run blistering ads against “dozens of Republican senators for rejecting Cruz’s tactics in the budget showdown that led to a 16-day federal shutdown.”
The Establishment reacted with fury, threatening to never do business again with any firm that does work for the SCF. High-level staff at the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) blasted away with threats and insults.

Morning, everyone! I’ll be headed to the funeral of my friend’s son today. What a sad day.
What happened to him?
He was shot and killed at a Halloween party. It’s so heartbreaking and upsetting at the same time. The kid was only 19 years old. Life just beginning and snatched out. It’s so incredibly sad.
Good Morning, Ladies. Sending prayers up to your friend and her family. Losing a child has to be excruciating. It’s unimaginable, but has become a haunting reality for some parents, particularly those with sons. My heart aches for the parents.

Shot? My God, that is so tragic, so sad. I haven’t been a parent but I cannot begin to fathom how the parents of murdered children bear such a heavy burden for the rest of their lives. Another sad, terrible, unnecessary loss, lives ruined, will it ever stop…
I Googled this and read the story and also the young man’s obituary. The kid who brought the gun to the party has been charged with murder one and a couple of other people were arrested for tampering with evidence. So, one young man is dead and the other will be in prison for most or perhaps all of his life.
I don’t understand kids bringing guns to parties, which is outrageous, but then using them to settle their altercations. What seems to be missing here is a thought process that factors in the consequences of shooting a gun and killing someone. The kid was a running back on the high school football team and I’m sure he did not ever envision spending his life in a cell. So why the disregard for consequences? No one could shoot and kill someone at a party at a VFW facility and hope to get away with it, so there had to be a total lack of consideration for consequences. That is what I don’t understand.

Thank you, everyone. I am grieved beyond words. My heart is broken. The funeral was the saddest ever. So so horrible. My heart goes out to the family. They are so so hurt. I saw one kid had to be taken outside. He literally passed out. *tears*
