I thought we’d share a little country music this week, focusing on the ladies.
Today’s selection: The Judds
The Judds were an American country music duo composed of Naomi Judd and her daughter, Wynonna Judd (born in 1964). Signed to RCA Records in 1983, the duo released six studio albums between then and 1991. One of the most successful acts in country music history, The Judds won five Grammy Awards for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and eight Country Music Association awards. The duo also charted twenty-five singles on the country music charts between 1983 and 2000, fourteen of which went to Number One and six more of which made Top Ten on the same chart.
The Judds called it quits in 1991 after Naomi was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Shortly after, Wynonna began her solo career. The two have occasionally reunited for special tours, the most recent of which began in late 2010.
Reunion shows[edit]
Wynonna and Naomi briefly reunited for a commercial for the retail chain Kmart, performing as the Judds on the song “Changing For the Better”. The duo also performed several shows in 1998. During this time, the duo also charted one more single credited to The Judds, as well as receiving an Academy of Country Music nomination for Duo of the Year in 2001.[2] In addition, Naomi sang harmony on Wynonna’s 2004 single “Flies on the Butter (You Can’t Go Home Again)”, although this song was credited as “Wynonna with Naomi Judd”.
In 2008, The Judds once again reunited for a concert at the 2008 Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California,[3] as well as two shows in Canada, including one at the world famous Calgary Stampede and another at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival in Merritt, British Columbia. In 2009, The Judds performed at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville.
In February 2010, Wynonna Judd appeared on CBS’s The Early Show and announced that she would reunite with Naomi, to tour and record a studio album for the final time as The Judds by the end of 2010. The tour, known as the Last Encore Tour, became an 18-city tour of the US that was expanded to 29 dates in 2011.[4]
On September 14, 2010, The Judds appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show where Wynonna discussed “her recent weight loss, her year of living dangerously and what it’s like going back on stage as part of the iconic duo, The Judds.”[5] The Judds also performed their new single “I Will Stand By You,” which was released on iTunes that same day.[6] In March 2011, Curb Records announced the release of The Judds’ new album, I Will Stand by You: The Essential Collection, which features two new songs and twelve of the duo’s hits. The album was released on April 5, 2011.

Proof of a Cover-Up In the Murder of Unarmed African American Renisha McBride

We at Political Blind Spot were amongst the first to report on the murder of Renisha McBride, and unarmed African American woman who was shot dead in the back of the head, by a white man with a shotgun.
In our initial report, we noted that “The police initially told McBride’s family that her body was ‘dumped’ and discovered near Warren Avenue and Outer Drive. Now the police are saying that she died where she stood, on the man’s front porch, asking for help.”
The Dearborn Police have been far from forthcoming about McBride’s murder. The local news media too has fumbled the story, initially running the early police statements that McBride’s body was “dumped.” Where did they get such an idea? Directly from the police. But when the police changed their own story, the media followed suit instead of asking tough questions.
Local Fox 2 Detroit initially said ”Teenager’s body found dumped in Dearborn Heights,” saying clearly that ”A young woman is shot and killed, her body dumped in Dearborn Heights. Now her family wants to know who would do this and why.”
They later killed this story after the police changed theirs…
NewsCastic said ”A young woman is shot and killed, her body dumped in Dearborn Heights. Now her family wants to know who would do this and why.”
Early headlines from RSSPump said, “Teen found shot to death in city’s north end” and “The body of a 19-year-old was found over the weekend near Warren Avenue… Teenager’s body found dumped in Dearborn Heights.”
Fox decided to give the man the benefit of the doubt; quoting the police. The headline read: “Police: Death of woman, 19, in Dearborn Heights possible self-defense gone wrong“. Around this time we stopped seeing any mention of the McBride’s corpse being “dumped.”
The American Conservative got it right, at least in part, when they reported on what the police initially said: “Good Lord: a 19 year old black woman in a (mostly white) Detroit suburb got into a car accident at 2:30 in the morning, went onto the porch of a nearby house to ask for help, and was shot and killed, allegedly by the homeowner, who thought he was being attacked.”
Renisha McBride’s bofy was dumped like yesterday’s trash. The murder and those trying to coverup the MURDER will PAY.

*When a questioner asked about Iran, he answered clearly and well, and with the next question moved right back into the apology/ “I screwed up” space.
*He makes no effort to spread the blame. He’s the Team Captain. He
fumbled the ball. He knows the American people expect him to pick the ball up and run, as hard as he can, in continuing the game. And he does what he can to take on blame that he feels will be directed unfairly at Democratic legislators. “I’m at fault. Blame me. Not my teammates.”

undefeated. This will confound and anger critics. Some will say he
hasn’t really apologized. Others will claim he doesn’t get the magnitude of the disaster. Others will say he is out of touch with reality. You know the world cannot define you; your value is given; and your deep commitment is to the game and its players, not to your personal success.

In the post civil rights era, the colorline is beset by many paradoxes.
The United States finally elected its first black president. There is a multicultural elite class. In this same moment, African Americans are harassed and racially profiled by “stop and frisk laws” and the experience known as “shopping while black”.
Black people are subjected to extrajudicial murder and violence by gun mad vigilantes, operating under onerous stand your ground laws, who shoot and murder young black people for the “crime” of walking down the street, in a neighborhood “where they don’t belong”, not being duly submissive, and carrying a bag of Skittles and iced-tea.
Full citizenship involves the presumption that one belongs to a political community. By virtue of that fact, citizenship also means that a person is entitled to safety and security in their person without qualification, exception, or justification. Full citizenship is not contingent or precarious.
African-Americans are not allowed such protections by the White Gaze. They are viewed as guilty until proven innocent, a criminal Other who is a priori categorized as “suspicious” and “dangerous”. While formal racism and Jim and Jane Crow were shattered and defeated by the Black Freedom Struggle, this ugly cloud continues to hover over the United States, some 400 years after the first black slaves were brought to the country.
Oh when will this end, WHEN will this ever end!

HBCU Blames Obamacare for Nixing Student Health Plans

Officials at Bowie State, one of the nation’s oldest historically black colleges, are citing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as the reason they have cancelled a school-wide affordable health care plan they had offered students.
The Maryland school’s official website explains that Obamacare’s new regulations would force the cost of the insurance to rise from $50 to $900 a semester, reports CampusReform.org.
“Bowie State University has suspended offering health insurance for domestic students for the 2013-2014 academic year,” states the school’s official website. “Due to new requirements of the Affordable Care Act which will go into effect on January 1, 2014, the cost of insurance for domestic students will increase to approximately $1800 per year.”

Despite being famously noncommittal about his sexuality, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker has a high-powered new girlfriend — Hollywood entertainment lawyer Bianca Levin, Page Six can exclusively reveal.
LA sources said Booker has been secretly seeing beautiful Levin since she co-hosted a June fund-raiser for his Senate campaign at the Rooftop by Gordon Ramsay in West Hollywood.
And New York-born Levin, 36, certainly makes an impressive partner. The Yale law graduate is a partner at LA’s venerable Gang Tyre Ramer & Brown talent firm, which reps such titans as Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood. Levin personally represents Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and “Twilight” star Ashley Greene, among others.
A source told us, “Bianca is a very accomplished woman and has started to accompany Booker to certain events. But both have very demanding jobs — he in DC, and Bianca in Los Angeles.”
Levin was even listed in the Hollywood Reporter’s “Hollywood’s Fastest-Rising Stars” in 2011, at which time she told the publication she’s focusing on signing emerging talent. “People take on entertainment lawyers very early in their careers now, so it’s super-competitive,” she says. “You’ve got to always be on the lookout for great talent.”

Tina Turner is cutting her ties with the U.S.
The R&B belter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennesee, went to the U.S. embassy in Bern, Switzerland, on Oct. 24 to sign a so-called “Statement of Voluntary Relinquishment of U.S. Citizenship under Section 349 (a)(1) of the INA [Immigration and Naturalization Act],” the Washington Post reports.
Turner, who turns 74 on Nov. 26, has lived in Switzerland for almost 20 years. In July, she married Erwin Bach, a German music producer she began dating in 1986.
Bach has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Petshop Boys, Queen, and Pink Floyd.
Turner’s plans to receive a Swiss passport were announced in January. In April, she passed the mandatory citizenship test that quizzed her on Swiss history and the German language. She became a Swiss citizen on April 22.
Turner told German newspaper Blick that she considers Switzerland home. “I’m very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here … I cannot imagine a better place to live,” she said.
According to the U.S. embassy in Bern’s activity report, Turner said she did not have plans to live in the U.S. in the future and her family was her only strong tie to her native country.
Turner is not renouncing her U.S. citizenship, though, the Post clarifies. The “relinquishment” statement means that she received the “Swiss citizenship with the intent to lose her U.S. citizenship.”

A few thoughts on Democrats

The past few days have had us witness a sad spectacle.
It’s safe to say that Obamacare’s roll-out hasn’t been as smooth as it should have been. Website problems have been a real hindrance to its more effective implementation, especially in a society wallowing in instant gratification. But, the fact is, that it’s a website, and fixable, and no one has died as a result. The same can’t be said about policies enacted by the previous Administration.
But the outrage ginned up by the mass media over the website problems—an outrage which was losing its motive force as Healthcare.gov performed better by the day—was as nothing compared to the fulminations falling from the lips of well-coiffed “journalists” over President Obama’s “broken promise”. That promise—that if you liked your insurance policy you could keep it—wasn’t broken by him, but by insurance companies which had issued junk policies which did not meet the strictures of the PPACA and were thus cancelling those policies, without informing consumers about options they had on the exchanges. Suddenly the news shows were filled with people apoplectic that their policies had been cancelled—policies, mind you, which could be cancelled at any moment for any reason, say, for instance, if you dared to get sick—and braying that Obama had “broken his promise”.
Today, the President offered an administrative fix, which allowed insurance companies to renew those policies for another year, but also stipulated that those companies had to inform their policy holders of the much better options available under Obamacare. In one move, he defused yet another manufactured scandal.
However, in the lead up to today’s press conference, we were treated to a parade of nervous Democrats, buffeted by the negative coverage, turning against the party’s greatest achievement in social welfare since the birth Medicare. The website’s problems had Democrats opining that the individual mandate should be delayed for a year. And the “broken promise” had Democrats in both the House and Senate rushing to administer a cure which would put the PPACA on life support. We were treated to the image of, once again, President Obama standing alone, and having to fight a hostile press, a rabid GOP, and the usual feckless Democrats.
One thing you can say about Republicans is that they march in lockstep. During the shutdown fiasco, we were treated to breathless reports about “moderate” Republicans who were ready to break with the leadership and stick a knife in the Tea Party’s back. They never materialized; the House GOP caucus would have doomed us to default in the service of party solidarity.
Democrats, obviously, are different. The party is much more diverse, holding within its caucus both Bernie Sanders and Joe Manchin. There are bound to be disagreements.

House GOP pushes Holder impeachment

Congressional Republicans are thrilled to be on the offensive, attacking the Affordable Care Act, keeping Democrats on the defensive, and uniting the GOP caucus behind a common purpose. Their disastrous government shutdown is fading in the rear-view mirror.
Anything House Republicans can do to distract attention from the party’s message? Maybe an initiative to remind the American mainstream just how nutty some members of the congressional GOP can be? This ought to do the trick.
Rep. Pete Olson (R-Texas) is apparently the lead sponsor of the effort, but he’s found 10 Republican allies to co-sponsor the articles of impeachment: Rep. Phil Roe of Tennessee, Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia, Rep. Larry Bucshon of Indiana, Rep. Blake Farenthold of Texas, Rep. Randy Weber of Texas, Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, Rep. Bill Flores of Texas, Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.
If successful, this would be the first impeachment of a sitting cabinet official in 137 years, and only the second ever in U.S. history.
But Holder probably shouldn’t worry too much – he’s not going to be impeached, and it’s likely that even House Republican leaders find this distraction pointless and unhelpful.
That said, I’m struck by how weak the Impeachment Brigade’s argument really is. The Justice Department turned over tens of thousands of documents related to Fast and Furious; the administration has the same powers of prosecutorial discretion that other administrations have enjoyed; refusing to defend DOMA in court isn’t the same thing as refusing to uphold laws; there’s no evidence of IRS officials breaking federal laws; and if Holder’s accusers have proof of perjury, they’ve hidden it well.

Issa’s credibility collapses

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has a favorite trick: his staff puts together a partial transcript of closed-door testimony, they edit it in a misleading way to advance a far-right narrative, and then they look for a news organization who’ll fall for the scam.
This week, the trick involved Henry Chao, HealthCare.gov’s chief project manager at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and an alleged memo involving security risks. CBS News fell victim to Issa’s swindle, and as was first reported right here on Maddow Blog, the story was quickly proven fraudulent.
At an Oversight Committee hearing yesterday, Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-Va.) questioned Chao on this point directly, made clear that the CBS report was wrong, and saw Chao explain that his words had been “rearranged” by the partial transcript Issa released.

Purged’ voter’s experience raises questions

At last tally, a mere 164 votes out of 2.2 million separated the two candidates for attorney general, and the contest appears destined for a recount. In such close elections, each individual vote is more important than usual. That goes for provisional ballots, too.
Much to her surprise and chagrin, Monica Daly of Montgomery County was one of those provisional voters in last week’s election. She’s hoping and praying her vote got counted. But she isn’t 100 percent sure.
Daly is 64 and she’s feisty. She’s a liberal Democrat who works in a Blacksburg health-food store. She always votes, and for her, Election Day is a big deal. Her twin sister is an election official in their hometown of Binghamton, N.Y.
But last week when Daly showed up to vote at Slusser’s Chapel Church of God on Mount Tabor Road, something strange happened. The election judges informed her she wasn’t registered.
How could that be? Daly wondered. In August of 2012, the state Board of Elections issued her a new voter ID card — all Virginia voters got them. Daly used it to vote in last year’s presidential election, and in the June 11 Democratic primary this year.
The day after the election, Daly had to take time off work to appear before the Montgomery County Electoral Board to argue why her provisional ballot should count.
How did she suddenly get unregistered in the first place? I’ve been putting many questions about that to state and Montgomery County elections officials. They have provided some — but not all — of the answers.

In the “kick Obama while he’s down” edition of Bill Clinton’s life and times, the former president jumped on the, “let them keep their bad insurance,” bandwagon. While many initially thought, “are you kidding me Bill?”, former President Clinton actually did us all a huge favor. He reminded us what a Clinton Hustle looks like, and frankly, it’s still not sexy.
Here is what Bill actually said:

The question I’ve fielded the most today is why on earth would Bill Clinton undermine the President at this critical junction?
Two reasons come to mind: first, this is all about 2016 and the rollout has been bad. If it continues to go badly the Clinton’s need space, they need distance from the debacle. But they can’t be seen to run away from Obama, they need his coalition to turn out for them. And second, the red state Democrats were already on the verge of jumping ship, all they needed was a little push from Bill, the prince of the Red States. What we have right now is a group of Democrats, from WV, LA, NC, GA, and KY who are going to need help. Fundraising is something O. can handle, but he can’t campaign for these particular candidates in these particular states. Obama is toxic in the red states, he has no pull. But guess who everybody loves? Bubba. These red state candidates are going flock to Clinton, and they are going to kiss the ring, and fall in line behind Hillary in 2016. It is a pretty piece of realpolitik.

What Should Democrats Have Promised About Obamacare?

With everyone pretty much agreeing that the president shouldn’t have said people who liked their existing insurance policies could keep them under the Affordable Care Act, what should he have said? After all, at some point he and other defenders of the Act are going to need to come up with a characterization of its effects that is being confirmed rather than confounded by actual experience.
Here’s a shot:
1) You’ll be able to buy health insurance, no matter what, and it’ll be insurance that won’t bankrupt you or abandon you when you are sick.
2) For people on Medicare, nothing will change, except that we will begin looking at how well the care provided under Medicare actually promotes health, and reflects the best available medicine.
3) For most people who get health insurance through your employers, nothing will change, either, unless your current insurance is really bad, in which case it will have to be upgraded, or you’ll be given a real opportunity to buy your own.
4) For people who do buy health insurance directly from insurance companies, nobody will be forced out of their current plans by the Affordable Care Act. Since insurance companies rarely offer the same plans twice anyway, new plans will have to provide basic coverage. And insurance companies in the habit of cutting and running when you get sick will be stopped from doing that. For the first time, middle-class people will get direct help in paying insurance premiums. More poor people will qualify for Medicaid, and those who don’t will get help with their out-of-pocket expenses.
5) The bottom line is that for the first time all Americans will have the chance to obtain the insurance most people have, and all Americans will be protected from common insurance company abuses.

With Democrats facing a gut check moment this week — will political fear prompt them to support the fake GOP “fix” to Obamacare that actually undermines it? — Republicans are hammering away at the bad Obamacare enrollment numbers to sow as much skittishness among Dems as possible.
Central to this GOP strategy is to raise question the method the administration uses to count enrollees — those who have selected a plan on the exchange, but haven’t necessarily paid for it — to reinforce the message that Obamacare is already a catastrophic failure. Mitch McConnell has derided this as “Enron-like accounting.”
I asked the administration to explain the reasons for this metric, and a senior administration official tells me that there are a range of practical reasons why the administration has opted for this method.

The propensity of weak-kneed, ill-stomached, politically risk-averse fair-weather Democrats in Congress (and some outside Congress, including former Democratic presidents who have been utter failures in achieving reform) to drive a sharp knife in the first black president’s back will likely never cease to amaze me. Because of website problems that are currently well on their way of being fixed (and much of it is fixed) and unrelenting media barrage attacking the president for acts of insurance companies, active Republican sabotage, and hackers, evidently, some Democrats in the House (and some Democratic Senators) are threatening to sign on with a Republican bill to severely undermine health reform.
Even a year away from election day, and even following a string of elections that made victorious candidates in favor of implementing health reform (even Chris Christie’s New Jersey accepted the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, and Virginia elected a Democrat who will now do the same for that state), Democrats are gun shy, cowering in the corner in fear of faux Republican and media attacks against the president and against letting health reform work.
Sadly, reflecting our media landscape and fearfulness of the president’s own party, nearly the entirety of the freakout is based on little more than hyped up stories that have been proven false and data even Democrats refuse to fully examine.
Yesterday was all the sky-is-falling over data. So, let’s talk about the data. Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services released enrollment numbers, showing only 106,000 people, or 21% of the goal to this point, had enrolled in plans through the federal and state exchanges as of November 2. But they have, along with the happy clappy media figures whose health care will never be threatened, absolutely refused to point to another crucial figure: some 1.5 million Americans have completed their applications on the exchanges.
Wait, what? What’s the difference? It’s simple. Completion of an application does not mean that the applicant has chosen and been enrolled in a plan. Once the application is complete, applicants have the option to choose and enroll in a plan from the many that are available to them. What could be holding up the evidently 1.4 million Americans who have finished their applications but have yet to choose a plan? A myriad of factors. Sure, website problems may well be one of the main factors that have kept people from enrolling, but so might the tendency to wait and evaluate all the options available to pick the best plan for oneself or one’s family.

LAKE MARY, Fla. – Lake Mary police confirm to Local 6 they have retrieved video of a fight on Sept. 9 between George and Shellie Zimmerman at her parents’ home in Lake Mary.
The video, which was extracted from an iPad damaged in the fight, took two months to download and examine through extensive forensics techniques, according to the department.
The fight happened in the front yard of the home of Machelle Dean, Shellie Zimmerman’s mother. George and Shellie had lived in the home for the last year while George was on trial for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman was found not guilty by a Seminole County jury.
In surveillance video taken from the home, George can be seen grabbing Shellie Zimmerman’s iPad from her hands, breaking it across his knee and prying it open with a knife before he throws it to the ground.
Lake Mary police investigators said the device was badly damaged in the fight, but Shellie said she had taken video of their altercation. She claimed it showed George assaulting her.
Police say the video will be released to the media on Friday.

Bill Clinton conceded those rhetorical inches to the right on Obamacare, which Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) seized on immediately. At least two blue-state senators, Dianne Feinstein (CA) and Jeff Merkley (OR), have jumped on the “fix Obamacare” bandwagon. At the same time, there’s no need for panic. Even with the continued existence and success of Fox, reality is still reality, and in the end, reality usually trumps cable and hyperventilating reports about who won the morning in Politico. And reality says the enrollment period doesn’t end until next spring, and it’s really not possible to tell how things are going until enrollment has ended and we see both the number of people who’ve enrolled and what percentage healthy vs. sick, because insurers made their guesstimates and pegged their rates to those guesstimates.
I remember a lot of other times when it was supposedly curtains for Obama, too, because inside the Beltway, the more disciplined Republicans, who after all are in the luxurious position of just sitting back and firing away, have an easier time winning news cycles. But out beyond the Beltway, the party that shut down the government for three weeks and killed immigration reform and wants to decimate food stamps and can’t even pass its own spending bills doesn’t look very appealing to most people. The fate of Obamacare can be changed. The DNA of the GOP cannot.

MOUNT HOLLY, New Jersey – It felt like an earthquake. Nancy Lopez was making breakfast when machines started tearing into the semi-attached house next door, ripping it to pieces and rattling the tiles off her bathroom wall.
“I thought that my house wasn’t gonna stay up,” Lopez said. “That was the worst day of my life.”
Lopez, who moved here in 1987, is one of the few remaining residents of Mount Holly Gardens, a neighborhood that no longer really exists but could fundamentally reshape civil rights law.
In 2003, leaders of this small township decided that crime in the Gardens had made the neighborhood–home to many black and Latino families–irredeemable. They devised a plan to buy the aging homes, raze them and replace them with higher-end housing the residents couldn’t afford.
Neighbors resisted, banded together as Mount Holly Gardens Citizens in Action and sued.
In court, they challenged the township’s designation of the neighborhood as blighted and accused Mount Holly of discriminating against residents on the basis of race.
Even if the discrimination wasn’t intentional, they said, the redevelopment project would have a disparate impact on the township’s only neighborhood where blacks and Latinos are the majority, destroying their hard earned homes.
The township denies that race had anything to do with the decision, saying that it was a last ditch effort to rid Mount Holly of crime and improve its economy. More than that, they say, the redevelopment was in the best interest of Gardens residents themselves, even if they didn’t realize it.
“We had to do something to save the people from that neighborhood,” said a former township official who would only talk on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing litigation. “That’s the reason we did it. It would have been discrimination not to do anything.”
Ten years and $18 million of debt later, there is no redevelopment project in the Gardens. Between the litigation, paying the developers, the crash of the housing market and leveling empty homes, what’s left is a half-bulldozed ghost town.

Warren: Blocking judges is GOP’s attempt to ‘nullify’ election

A fed-up Elizabeth Warren called out Republicans’ “naked attempts to nullify the results of the last presidential election” and warned of payback in the mode of filibuster reform if they keep blocking all of Obama’s judicial nominees.
“Republicans may not like Wall Street reform. They may not like Obamacare. But Congress passed those laws,” Warren said Wednesday on the Senate floor. “President Obama ran for reelection on those laws, while his opponent pledged to repeal them–and his opponent lost by nearly five million votes. It is not up to judges to overturn those laws or their associated regulations just because they don’t fit those judges’ policy preferences.”
President Obama has been batting 0 for 3 to get his Democratic candidates (all women) onto the D.C. Circuit Court, the nation’s second most powerful bench.
On Tuesday, Senate Republicans blocked the nomination of Nina Pillard. She had been under fire by conservatives for her pro-choice views on abortion. Less than two weeks ago, Republicans pulled out the same tactics by filibustering the nomination of Patricia Millett–a person even Ted Cruz considered fit for the job. And before that it was Caitlin Halligan who fell victim to another GOP filibuster earlier in the year. It’s a pattern.
“The powerful interests that work to rig the Supreme Court also want to rig the lower courts,” said Warren. “The D.C. Circuit is a particular target because that court has the power to overturn agency regulations.”

Massachusetts Pace vs US Enrollment pace

Just a quick note concerning Obamacare enrollment. Compared to the comparable time point of the 2006 Massachusetts experience, Obamacare Exchange enrollment pace is matching Massachusetts’ enrollment pace for private insurance during the Bay State’s 2006 open enrollment period.
At 16% into the open enrollment period, 2,089 Massachusetts citizens had signed up. As a straight population adjustment (sum *48.75), that would translate into the national experience of roughly 102,000 people signing up. 106,000 people signed up via either the federal exchange or through state exchanges covering all but three Exchange jurisdictions according to the Washington Post. Three state run Exchanges have not reported their numbers so we can assume a slightly higher number.
Being slightly less charitable if we apply an adjustment to the raw population total to account for the fact that Massachusetts had a much smaller uninsured pool, (8.4% in 2006 vs. 15.4% US nationally in 2013), expectations would have seen 186,000 Obamacare enrollments.
However there is another adjustment that would reduce 186,000 expected pace downwards. The Massachusetts Medicaid expansion was only applicable to people up to 100% Federal Poverty Line. For the states that are taking Medicaid enrollment, people who make between 133% and 138% are eligible, so the total US national pool eligible for the Exchanges is smaller than the 1.83 factor adjustment implies.
Even with a crappy three weeks of website work, and pointed political opposition, the pace is either concurrent with the nearest relevant example, or slightly behind depending on how you want to model expected pace. That ain’t bad. (As a side note, I am curious as to why HHS was so optimistic about first month enrollment)
Additionally, Obamacare, even with the Supreme Court and the reactionary assholes neutering Medicaid expansion in half the country is signing people up for Medicaid expansion at a rate that surpasses Massachusetts’ experience in 2006.
Update 1: via a commenter in the Pittsburgh region, I was directed to this story concerning Pennsylvania enrollment.
Pennsylvania is a Federal Exchange state. Assuming Highmark is representative, the key is the November pace is at least 3x faster than the October pace, and that is without any time pressure to enroll yet for January 1st coverage.
