Today’s 3 Chic’s feature is classic rock bands. I’ve always loved the lyrics of these songs and the manner in which they were sung. They are sheer poetry.
The Turtles
The Turtles are an American rock band led by vocalists Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, later known as Flo and Eddie.[1] The band became notable for several Top 40 hits beginning with their cover version of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe” in 1965. They scored their biggest and best-known hit in 1967 with the song “Happy Together”.[2]
The band, originally a surf-rock group called the Crossfires, was formed in 1965 in Westchester, California, by Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. With the help of DJ and club owner Reb Foster, the Crossfires signed to the newly formed White Whale Records and adhering to the prevailing musical trend, re-branded themselves as a folk rock group under the name the Tyrtles, the intentional misspelling inspired by the Byrds and the Beatles. However, the trendy spelling did not survive long.
As with the Byrds, the Turtles achieved breakthrough success with a Bob Dylan cover. “It Ain’t Me Babe” reached the Billboard Top Ten in the late summer of 1965, and was the title track to the band’s first album. Their second single, “Let Me Be,” reached the top 30, while their third hit, “You Baby,” charted in the top 20 in early 1966. The band’s second album, You Baby, failed to reach Billboard’s Top LPs chart, and of several singles released in 1966, “Grim Reaper of Love” and “Can I Get to Know You Better” barely entered the Billboard Hot 100. One single, the tough “Outside Chance”, written by Warren Zevon, and featuring guitar work in the style of the Beatles’ ‘Taxman’ didn’t chart at all. In 1966, the Turtles made an appearance in Universal’s beach party spy spoof film Out of Sight, singing “She’ll Come Back” on screen.
At the start of 1966 drummer Don Murray and bassist Chuck Portz quit the group. They were replaced by Joel Larson and then John Barbata on drums, and by Chip Douglas on bass (October 1966). In 1967, rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker left the band, allegedly after being publicly insulted by John Lennon when the group were in England on a promotional tour. Tucker, a Beatles fan, apparently never got over the experience and quit the group and the music business.[3]
The first of several key Turtles singles co-written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, “Happy Together”, seemed almost a parody of itself, and had already been rejected by countless performers. “Happy Together”, both their biggest hit and their signature song, signaled a turning point for the Turtles and for Chip Douglas, who provided the arrangement. The single replaced the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1967. The Turtles’ only No. 1 remained there for three weeks. An album of the same name followed and peaked at No. 25. “Happy Together” reached # 12 on the UK singles chart.[4] This same year saw the Turtles performing the title song for the Twentieth Century-Fox bedroom farce, A Guide for the Married Man.

The Byrds /ˈbɜrdz/ were an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964.[1] The band underwent multiple line-up changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn, a.k.a. Jim McGuinn, remaining the sole consistent member, until the group disbanded in 1973.[2] Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial success of contemporaries like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones for a short period (1965–66), The Byrds are today considered by critics to be one of the most influential bands of the 1960s.[1] Initially, they pioneered the musical genre of folk rock, melding the influence of The Beatles and other British Invasion bands with contemporary and traditional folk music.[3] As the 1960s progressed, the band was also influential in originating psychedelic rock, raga rock, and country rock.[1][4][5]
The band’s signature blend of clear harmony singing and McGuinn’s jangly twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar has continued to be influential on popular music up to the present day.[1][6] Among the band’s most enduring songs are their cover versions of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” and Pete Seeger’s “Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There is a Season)”, along with the self-penned originals, “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better”, “Eight Miles High”, “So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”, “Ballad of Easy Rider” and “Chestnut Mare”.

Investigators believe Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds was stabbed by his son, who then shot himself in an early morning altercation in their home, state police said.
Creigh Deeds, who was stabbed repeatedly in the head and torso, has been upgraded from critical to fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. His son, 24-year-old Austin “Gus” Deeds, died from his gunshot wound.

We’re entering a bizarre end of the year edition of Silly Season in which the news media is laser-focused on the wrong things. As stories about the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act begin to dissipate, it looks like we’ve segued into an especially nonsensical “British Anchor Wants to Poop in Palin’s Mouth” meets “Wacky Toronto Mayor Does Wacky Stuff” news cycle.
Lost in the mix, of course, is the ongoing far-right effort to sabotage the Affordable Care Act.
I’m not talking about the myths and propaganda — the “death panel” nonsense and the like. This is serious business: the well-financed, broadly implemented sabotage campaign designed to rig the law for failure, while also making it more difficult for Americans to receive insurance.

‘Selfie’: 2013’s word of the year

LONDON — In what was described as an unusually unanimous decision, “selfie” has been chosen as word of the year by the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary, beating out “twerk” and a host of other Internet and social-media-related terms, such as “bitcoin,” that have exploded onto the verbal scene in recent years.
“It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet,” Oxford Dictionaries said on its blog, without offering an accompanying selfie of the writer. “If it is good enough for the Obamas or the pope, then it is good enough for Word of the Year.”
Use of “selfie,” to mean a self-portrait typically snapped with a smartphone and shared over social networks, has risen 17,000% in frequency over the past 12 months, Oxford Dictionaries said. “Twerk” experienced a notable midyear surge, thanks to Miley Cyrus, but has not proved quite as popular or universal.
Although it was the “runaway winner” for the panel charged with selecting the 2013 word of the year, “selfie” was already on Oxford Dictionaries’ list of words to watch last year, like a song moving up the Billboard singles chart. It made it into Oxford Dictionaries’ online version three months ago, but hasn’t yet broken through to the magisterial Oxford English Dictionary, or OED.
Perhaps surprising to some, the term was first recorded in Australia, not the U.S. or Britain, in 2002. An abashed and probably hungover participant in an Internet forum posted a self-portrait taken after a drunken accident on a set of stairs.
“I had a hole … right through my bottom lip,” the post said. “And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.”

This Is What Happens When a Pipeline Bursts in Your Town. Conflicted about Keystone? Consider the horrific impact of an oil spill in Arkansas.

Jason Thompson used to love fishing in the lake he can see from his window in Mayflower, Arkansas, but these days, when he throws a line out into the water, the lure he reels back is covered in a sour, stinking black tar, the skirt of the jig stuck uselessly together. When he brings the fingers that touched the line up to his nose, he gets a whiff of the same putrid stench that filled the air for weeks after the oil pipeline burst—the smell that still rises out of the ground every time it rains.
Thompson hasn’t been fishing much. Ever since Exxon Mobil’s Pegasus pipeline burst in March and spilled an estimated 210,000 gallons of Canadian heavy crude oil two miles from his house, he’s had headaches of preternatural intensity, so bad they wake him up in the middle of the night. He has nosebleeds, and hemorrhoids even though he’s only 36; there’s a rash on his neck that has only gotten worse in the eight months since the spill; and some days he feels so weak that he can hardly get out of bed. He estimates that he has lost almost 35 pounds since the rupture, falling from a fit 220 down to 185. When he went to see a doctor in April, he was told he has a mysterious spot on one lung—but he hasn’t been able to afford to go back.
Hundreds of people in this working-class town of 2,200 have complained of symptoms like Thompson’s. And their maladies—respiratory disorders, nausea, fatigue, nosebleeds, bowel issues, throbbing headaches—echo the ones that appeared in Marshall, Michigan, where an Enbridge Energy pipeline burst in 2010. The two pipelines were carrying the same kind of oil: a heavy crude, or bitumen, mined in the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, which is thicker and rawer than the oil extracted in the United States. This is also the oil that would flow in record quantities through the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, if President Barack Obama decides to approve it.
The Mayflower spill should alarm communities along Keystone’s proposed route. Experts believe it happened in part because the leaden crude from the Alberta tar sands erodes pipelines faster than the oil the U.S. is used to shipping: Bitumen is so thick, it has to be transported at higher pressures and temperatures, and it must be diluted with gas before it can flow, which can lead to violent pressure swings inside the pipeline. This new danger isn’t inspiring much caution in the energy industry, judging by the Associated Press’s recent revelation that 300 spills have occurred in North Dakota alone in less than two years, and all were kept secret. On average, U.S. pipelines spilled over 3.1 million gallons a year between 2008 and 2012, according to the Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). As for the Keystone project, Public Citizen released a report this month documenting over 125 patches, dents, and other worrisome anomalies in its southern half.
Likewise, in a report released November 6, PHMSA found that Exxon knew it was gambling when it repurposed the 65-year-old pipeline, which stretches 858 miles from Illinois to the Gulf Coast in Texas, in 2006. (Built to carry lighter oil from south to north, it was converted to carry tar sands crude from north to south.) Tests the company performed before reversing the line “provided more than adequate information for the pipe to be considered susceptible to seam failure,” PHMSA chided, and yet, “The operator failed to establish a five-year reassessment interval” for the section that ultimately burst on March 29, 2013. PHMSA’s assessment may have been scathing, but the fine it proposed is barely a slap on the wrist: just $2.6 million, or .0003 percent of the company’s $7.8 billion profit in just the third quarter of 2013. In other words, Exxon took a calculated risk, and the residents of Mayflower are paying the price.

Grosse Pointe Park police officers are capturing humiliating photos and videos of black men and texting them to friends and family, the Motor City Muckraker has found.
One of the main culprits is Officer Mike Najm, who texted a picture of a black man in the back of a trailer and typed, “Gotta love the coloreds.” In one video, Najm can be heard telling a mentally ill black man to sing.
Most of the videos are shot from squad cars while African American men are told to sing or “dance like a chimp.” Some of the subjects are even in the back of police cars.

The husband of former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris has committed suicide, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
Police confirmed to the AP that Anders Ebbeson, Harris’ husband, was found dead of apparent suicide at the couple’s home in Sarasota.
Ebbeson, a Swedish businessman, was 68. According to Pastor William Hild of Sarasota First Baptist Church, Harris’ husband had been dealing with health issues in recent years.
“On behalf of the family, Katherine’s husband took his own life,” Hild said at a news conference, according to the Herald Tribune. “They are asking for privacy, prayer, thoughts and love from the community.”
Harris was thrust into the national spotlight during the controversy over Florida’s ballots in the 2000 presidential election. The Republican Secretary of State certified that George W. Bush had defeated Democrat Al Gore in the Sunshine State, a decision later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 2002, Harris was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 13th District. In 2006, she unsuccessfully attempted to unseat Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.). Harris left Congress in 2007.
Police: Katherine Harris’ Husband Commits Suicide
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Sarasota police say the husband of former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris was found dead of an apparent suicide at the couple’s home.
Police spokeswoman Genevieve Judge said Tuesday that Harris’ husband, 68-year-old Anders Ebbeson, committed suicide.
Officers were called to the home between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Tuesday.
During a news conference at the police station, Pastor William Hild of Sarasota First Baptist Church confirmed that Ebbeson had taken his own life.
Ebbeson was a Swedish businessman. Hild, the family’s pastor, says Ebbeson suffered from health issues in recent years.

Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, is in critical condition after being stabbed in his home and his son Gus is dead from a gunshot wound, law enforcement sources told the Richmond Times-Dispatch this morning.
Deeds is being treated at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
“Virginia State Police are on the scene of an assault of a state legislator that took place Tuesday morning,” the news release said. “Senator Creigh Deeds has been transported to U.Va. Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the assault at his residence.”
Regarding Deeds’ son, state police would only say that “a second individual at the residence is deceased.”
Deeds, 55, has served in the state Senate since 2001, representing Bath County. He lost two statewide contests to Republican Bob McDonnell, for attorney general in 2005 and for governor in 2009 by 17 percentage points.

Latest Macy’s Allegation: NYPD Officer Says Macy’s Racially Profiled Her in Black Friday Arrest

A Hispanic NYPD officer taking advantage of post-Thanksgiving sales at Macy’slast year was wrongfully arrested for shoplifting after the store’s security lied that she confessed to the crime, a new lawsuit charges.
Jenny Mendez, 29, is suing the department store for $40 million, claiming its workers racially profiled her — and the bogus arrest got her bounced from the police department after less than a year on the job.
The lawsuit, filed Friday in Bronx Civil Supreme Court, also accuses bosses at Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square of encouraging security to lie in their internal theft reports.
Mendez, who lives in the Bronx, was acquitted of the shoplifting charges in September. During the two-day bench trial, a store detective took the stand and admitted her supervisors told her to fudge paperwork.
The store detective, whom the lawsuit only names as Trouche, testified that she checked “yes” in a section of her report in which it asks if Mendez admitted the theft.
Trouche said she lied about the confession because it was “something our boss told us” to do, according to court records.

Star Partners and Hummingbird Prods. are collaborating on production of a sequel to Frank Capra’s iconic 1946 movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which starred Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.
The sequel, titled “It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story,” is being financed by Allen J. Schwalb of Star Partners who will also produce along with Bob Farnsworth of Hummingbird. The duo are aiming to get the movie into theaters for the 2015 holiday season.
Karolyn Grimes, who played George Bailey’s daughter “Zuzu” in the original, will return for the “Wonderful Life” sequel as an angel who shows Bailey’s unlikeable grandson (also named George Bailey) how much better off the world would have been had he never been born.

Citing overreach, Republicans ponder new checks on executive powers

Congressional Republicans are considering various options to curb President Obama’s use of executive powers, which they say are excessive.
GOP officials have long claimed that the president has violated the law and the Constitution through administrative actions on issues ranging from immigration to nominations to the U.S. military involvement in Libya
But the president’s recent move to change ObamaCare through an administrative fix has sparked a new round of discussions within the conservative base and Republicans on Capitol Hill.
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) last week said he was “highly skeptical” Obama could find a fix for the cancellation of health insurance plans that was both “legal and effective.”
“I just don’t see, within the law, their ability to do that,” said the Speaker.
An hour later, Obama was outlining such a change to reporters at the White House.
House Republicans passed a bill that would allow people to keep their health plan. Despite a veto threat, 39 Democrats backed the legislation written by Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.).
“I know there’s a lot of discussion about the validity of the president just unilaterally changing the law. … There are a lot of us that are very concerned about it,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said in an interview with The Hill.
Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), the chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, said, “We’re exploring options to try to somehow try to rein in this president’s total disregard for the Constitution.”

Grosse Pointe Park police officially opened an internal investigation today following our report Thursday that officers were capturing humiliating videos and pictures of black men and texting them to colleagues and family.
“On Thursday, November 14 2013, the Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Department was contacted by an individual who said that he was in possession of video clips and a photo of African American males,” police said in press release to Huffington Post. “The video clips and photo are allegedly made by an officer of this department. The department has begun an internal investigation of this matter. The Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Department does not tolerate unprofessional conduct by its officers when interacting with any citizen they may come in contact with.”
Police have declined to update us on the investigation, but we provided them with more images from the text messages today. We’ll be giving them additional evidence this weekend.

Unequal Pay Is Even More Unequal For Women Of Color

While women overall still made just 77 cents for each dollar men made last year, that gap is far wider for women of color. In an analysis of recent Census data, the National Women’s Law Center finds that an African-American woman working full time, year round made just 64 cents for every dollar a white man made and Hispanic women made just 54 cents.
NWLC notes that these racial and gender wage gaps mean that black women lost $18,650 compared to white men and Hispanic women lost $24,111.
Even worse, the gap seems to be growing. The year before, black women made 69 cents for every dollar made by a white man and Latinas made 60 cents.
Women of color face gender discrimination that means 13 percent of women report being denied a raise because of their gender and about a third say they would be paid more if they were a man. Seventy percent of women say that being paid less than men is a major problem. A third of women say they have experienced discrimination based on their gender and 15 percent say they’ve been passed over for a promotion or other opportunity for the same reason.
But they also face racial discrimination that means black workers earn $22,552 less than white workers a year on average and Hispanic workers earn $16,861 less. Income for black workers fell 14.6 percent between 2000 and 2010 and the recession doubled the wealth gap between white and black households. Black workers have also experienced a decade of consistently high unemployment but when they do get hired are often kept from the top ranks.

TOKYO U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy traveled by horse-drawn carriage into the Imperial Palace to present her credentials to Japan’s emperor on Tuesday, giving the public a rare look at a diplomatic tradition.
Hundreds of onlookers lined the avenues near the moat-ringed palace to snap pictures and wave as Kennedy, 55-year-old daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, waved back from inside the carriage.
In an unusual move, national broadcaster NHK showed Kennedy’s arrival at the Imperial Palace live, following the entourage from the air once it entered the palace gates.

O’Donnell Tears Apart Police Officers Who Shot at Minivan: Getting Guidance from ‘TV Cop Shows’

The video of a New Mexico police officer opening fire on a minivan full of young kids is shocking, to say the least, and Lawrence O’Donnell went off on Monday night against the cops who, he suggested, have been taking their guidance from “TV cop shows” instead of how real police officers are supposed to conduct themselves in the line of duty.
O’Donnell said the officer who opened fire “violates the law” with his “completely unconstitutional use of deadly force.” He dispelled the “mythical practice” of firing warning shots, explaining that “most bullets fired by police miss most of the time.”
He kept going on about how horrible and unlawful what the cops did was, and concluded the segment by explaining that after everything that’s happened, “Those two officers have been charged with nothing.”

After listing the benefits of the ACA, President Obama talked about the half a million Americans who have already will have access to healthcare as of January 1, 2014. The president said, “That still leaves a whole lot of people that we’ve got to get signed up.” President Obama said that 12 million people have visited the site.
The president talked about the difficult battle to make this change a reality, “We knew it was going to be hard because change is hard, and there are a lot of vested interests, and obviously we haven’t gotten a lot of cooperation from the other party, so I’ve run my last political campaign, but I’ve got one more campaign in me, and that’s to make sure that this law works. We’re not backing off one bit.”
The most important thing that that the president said was, “All along at every step there have been folks who said that this wasn’t going to happen. Folks who said this is dead. Folks who said it’s never going to work. You know, that’s been going on for three years, and it’s not any different now. But the difference is that we can actually actually make sure that people get signed up, and start experiencing those benefits right off the bat, and if we do that consistently and effectively over the next six months then this law is going to be one that lasts for generations to come, and people will see why we fought so hard to do it.”

The Kochs and Their Astroturf Tea Are Demanding an Exemption From Campaign Finance Rules

Americans should hope that their government weighs decisions affecting the outcome of America’s electoral process on laws and reality; not out of sorrow for fabricated suffering and misfortunes of billionaires claiming they are targets of disparaging public commentary and scorn. A little over three years ago, the conservative Supreme Court was overwhelmed with pity and sorrow for the Koch brothers and their surrogate conservative non-profit, Citizens United, and ruled that after being put upon by Federal Elections Commission rules regarding corporate campaign finance laws, the wealthiest corporations were entitled to First Amendment protections prohibiting government from restricting political independent expenditures by corporations.
Up until the time the High Court ruling on Citizens United was handed down, the public was oblivious to the Koch brothers’ machinations to hijack the electoral process resulting in little to no public outcry against exempting the richest corporations in the nation from buying elections. It appears Americans are being kept unawares again as the Koch’s so-called grass-roots organization, the teabaggers, have asked for an FEC exemption on campaign finance disclosure rules.
The teabaggers appealed directly to the Federal Elections Commission in September with the outrageous claim they are being assailed by, and encounter unprecedented harassment from, both government officials and private actors. Their appeal claimed their wealthy corporate contributors face widespread hostility and “a reasonable probability of threats, harassment, or reprisal” because of their extraordinary desire to “curb increasing government infringement of their individual liberties.” The Koch brothers’ organization also asserted that all they are comprised of are besieged individual groups who share common values including “limited federal government, respect for the original meaning of the Constitution, fiscal responsibility, and returning political power to the states and the people.”

The myths of Obamacare’s ‘failure’

Attacks on the Affordable Care Act have stepped up over the last week or so. You’d think that the healthcare reform known as Obamacare is leading to the wholesale loss of affordable insurance by huge sectors of the American public, many of whom will be impoverished by being forced into low-quality health plans at exorbitant prices.
You’d think the entire reform is on “life support,” as the usually judicious National Journal put it today, speculating that Democrats may soon start calling for its repeal.
Don’t buy the hype. The numbers tell an entirely different story. What they also demonstrate is that the myth of Obamacare’s “failure” is a product of the same Republican noise machine that has been working to undermine this crucial reform since Day One. It’s assisted by news reporting about canceled health policies that typically ranges from woefully misinformed to spectacularly ignorant, and even at its best is incomplete.
Indeed, the spectacle of Democrats panicking over bad news on Obamacare resembles the herds of giraffes one sees on the Serengeti being stampeded by swarms of tsetse flies. Here’s a lesson the giraffes could teach the Dems: Stampeding leads only to injuries and death, and doesn’t solve the tsetse fly problem.
It’s true that there are several ways that Obamacare can be improved. We’ll explain some of them in an upcoming post.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at what’s actually happening on the ground. What’s essential here is to examine how many people are being thrown off their existing health plans by Obamacare and forced into costlier plans with lesser benefits — the category of Obamacare “victim” garnering most of the hand-wringing attention. It’s also important to measure that figure against the number of people who will unquestionably be helped by Obamacare.
You’re about to learn that the number of victims is much smaller than you’re being led to think and is swamped by the ranks of beneficiaries.
