President and First Lady Obama Want Their Daughters To Try a Minimum Wage Job
By: Jason Easley more from Jason Easley
    Friday, June, 20th, 2014, 9:26 am

President and Mrs. Obama are looking to pass along middle class values to their daughters by wanting them to try working a minimum wage job.

    Transcript from Parade Magazine:

Is this about your daughters also, and their future?

PO: Absolutely. Every little girl I meet out there, I think about Malia and Sasha, and the notion that they’d be treated differently, trapped, not paid enough, having to settle for a raw deal on the job, having to scramble between taking care of kids, taking care of an aging parent, being single moms like my mom was and going to school and work at the same time, then having to come home and cook.

Sasha Obama Tours the Pretty Little Liars Set!

    by Zach Johnson

Is Sasha Obama even stealthier than A?!

The First Daughter, 13, and a pal toured the set of Pretty Little Liars Thursday, E! News confirms. Secret Service was heavily present, a source says, which made it fun for the cast and crew. “Sasha was super happy to get to see what Rosewood really looks like,” the source says of the show’s fictional town.

The show’s cast members—including Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell and Sasha Pieterse—has not shared any details about Sasha’s visit via their various social media accounts.

The teen’s timing was perfect, as the actresses wrapped production later that night. “Excited to go back to Toronto this weekend!!!” Mitchell tweeted Thursday. “See you soon @TootsieShoppe.” The next morning, Hale informed her 3.75 million Twitter followers, “Despite my 3 missed alarm clocks, not knowing what I packed, and falling down a small flight of steps I’m still so excited to go hommmmme.”

MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell has been out for a few months, after he got into a car accident back in April. He has been slowly recovering, and tonight, he made his grand return to the airwaves with an appearance on Rachel Maddow‘s show. He was also sporting a beard.

  9. Hey Chicas!

I finally participated in a poll about Ted Cruz & Dan Patrick. I was like wtf?
I slammed them all. Tea Party bigots. So happy I helped mess up the bigots polls. The lady asked would you vote most likely, somewhat likely, less likely for Ted Cruz.

Lady, I’m a Democrat. Hell No!!!! She had to laugh.

There’s nothing wrong with Malia Obama using ‘connections’ for her ‘job’
    by Luvvie | June 17, 2014 at 2:12 PM

Malia Obama got her first job.

She was a production assistant for one day on the set of Steven Spielberg’s new TV series called Extant starring Halle Berry.

My first job was at a Presbyterian church’s summer camp, dealing with snot-nosed 6 and 7 year olds. But my parents weren’t the President and the First Lady of the United States. If they were, you better believe I’d be working as a professional side-eye giver at the Oprah Winfrey show. MAKE THAT CALL, IMPORTANT MOM!

I am not mad at the fact that Malia’s first gig is way doper than most of ours, but some people are crying “nepotism” and criticizing the way she probably got the job. I’m here to say a hearty “AND SO WHAT?!”

HELL YEAH, NEPOTISM (aka family hookups)! I am here for it, especially in this instance.

Why shouldn’t POTUS and FLOTUS help their daughter get a cool job? Surely we don’t think Malia’s going to have that last name and still have to apply for stuff via LinkedIn like the rest of us regular people whose parents don’t rule the free world, right?

Let’s talk about how white folks have been prospering for centuries off of family hookups You want to be upset at nepotism getting people into positions they might not have, then you better be pissed at the legacies of powerful families like the Kennedys and Bushes. You’re mad at Malia getting some one-day gig, but you’re not that upset at someone handing their brother a governorship or senator seat or whole companies. Ralph Lauren’s granddaughter is one of the faces of his brand as a model, Chelsea Clinton is running her family’s foundation (and getting paid $600,000 by MSNBC), and Jenna Bush Hager has no formal journalism training but has a job on the Today Show.

First black ‘Phantom of the Opera’: Still a ‘glass ceiling’ for black performers

by Chris Witherspoon | June 19, 2014 at 1:30 PM

Actor Norm Lewis made history last month, becoming the first African-American to ever star as the Phantom in the Broadway’s long-running musical The Phantom of the Opera.

However, the 51-year-old Tony nominee says there is still a glass ceiling for black actors on Broadway.

“You don’t ever see African-American men being the romantic lead [in Broadway shows],” Lewis told “We’ve had a few guys that have played the romantic lead in Wicked, but you can’t really point out any romantic leads in a show, especially some classic shows that will show African-Americans.”

Lewis garnered a Tony nomination for his role as Porgy alongside Audra McDonald in the 2012 Broadway revival of Porgy and Bess and most recently starred as Kerry Washington’s on-again-off-again love interest in ABC’s Scandal.

“I’m known as the guy [Olivia Pope] kicked to the curb,” Lewis said. “My arc was done because I was too nice… I was too good. The audience wanted her to be a little bit more gritty and dirty. That’s why they love her affair with the President.”

Up next, Lewis is producing a show at legendary Carnegie Hall honoring black history.

The Black Stars of the Great White Way brings together Lewis along with several other Broadway legends, including Ben Vereen, Andre De Shields, Cecily Tyson, Phylicia Rashad, Savion Glover and Chita Rivera, to honor the achievements of black men on Broadway.

The Black Stars of The Great White Way Broadway Reunion: Live The Dream will take place June 23 at 8 PM in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.

Florida mom accused of kidnapping child to avoid learning black history

by Carrie Healey | June 17, 2014 at 12:03 PM

A Florida mother is accused of kidnapping her two-year-old daughter to avoid having her vaccinated and learning about black history.

According to court records, Megan Elizabeth Everett, 22, disappeared with the child last month after the child’s father, Robert Baumann, dropped their daughter off for visitation, reports the Sun Sentinel.

Everett and Baumann shared custody of two-year-old Lilly.

Baumann believes that Everett did not want Lilly to be vaccinated in an effort to keep the child out of school.

“One of the issues we had was she wanted to home school my daughter,” said Baumann, according to the Sentinel. “I didn’t want that to happen. She didn’t want Lilly to learn about black history. She just wanted her to learn about the Confederacy.”

According to NBC Miami, Everett left a note behind for her current boyfriend, Carlos Lesters, that included: “If I let them take her and vaccinate her and brainwash her, I wouldn’t be doing what’s right.”

Court documents describe Lesters as a “Confederate-flag-waving gun enthusiast.”

“The things she’s done in the past year – the parenting decisions she’s made have been unsafe,” Everett’s sister Stephanie, who is supporting Baumann, told NBC Miami.

Everett faces federal criminal charges, including kidnapping and crossing state lines to avoid prosecution.

Everett and Lilly are still missing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Everett and Lilly to call 954-746-3600 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

    • Ametia says:

Fine, don’t vaccinate you child, but taking her out of school because you don’t want her to learn BLACK HISTORY… woman, there’s no place you can go in this country or any other where your child will NOT be exposed to BLACK HISTORY.

Hell, wouldn’t be surprised if she and her daughter have BLACK ancestors.

      See how this works folks?

Tennessee Town Elects First African-American Mayor

    Jun 18, 2014

    ByD.L. Chandler

William “Bill” Rawls, Jr. became the first African-American mayor in the city of Brownsville in Tennessee. The historic mark is additionally noteworthy as Rawls defeated outgoing mayor Jo Matherne, who was the city’s first female mayor.

Rawls won the election by capturing 65 percent of the vote compared to Matherne’s 35, according to unofficial numbers from the Haywood County Election Commission. Rawls, who co-owns the Rawls Funeral Home in the town, has never held elected office prior to the win. Rawls will be sworn in officially on July 8, and serve a four-year term in the post. Both candidates ran as independents in the race as mandated by the city’s charter for mayoral elections.
