Opening statements were held Wednesday in the racially charged murder trial of Theodore Wafer, a white 55-year-old Detroit-area man who fired a shotgun through his screen door and into the face of 19-year-old Renisha McBride, who was banging on it.
“Boom, boom, boom!” resounded through Wafer’s home at least four times, causing Wafer to bolt awake and grab his gun, defense attorney Cheryl Carpenter told the Detroit court, shouting for effect. She described her client as being afraid for his life.
He had fallen asleep in his recliner and was terrified when he heard banging on his house. Unable to find his cell phone, the lawyer said, he grabbed his shotgun.
