2 South Side sites out of running for Obama library
Paula Robinson, managing partner of the Bronzeville Community Development Partnership, said she got a call from Martin Nesbitt, a friend of the president and head of the foundation.
He said the group’s proposal, which favored building the library on the old Michael Reese Hospital site, would not make the cut, according to Robinson.
“I don’t know if he was letting me down gently,” Robinson said. “But he said he was going to need our community leadership and would be circling back.”
Also, according to a source, Nesbitt spoke by phone with Chicago developer Dan McCaffery and told him his proposal for a lakefront library on the site of the former South Works steel mill would not be a finalist.
Among the problems was that McCaffery’s bid did not include a university partner and that the vacant land surrounding the proposed library location would take five to 10 years to develop, according to a source.
McCaffery’s bid was always seen as a long shot, but his proposal did include a stunning design — a modern library jutting out over Lake Michigan with its roof doubling as a hyper-modern boardwalk.
Robinson said Nesbitt told her he would be announcing finalists next week and that the field needed to be narrowed considerably because “what’s coming next is going to be very expensive” for the finalists.
It’s expected that finalists will be required to put forth very detailed proposals.
Thirteen groups notified the Obama foundation of their interest in hosting the library, including the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois at Chicago and Chicago State University. Other bidders include Columbia University in New York and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
Barack and Michelle Obama are periodically updated on developments in the site selection process and are expected to make a final decision in early 2015.

Why Dem voters may not show up this fall
By Greg Sargent September 11 at 3:05 PM
Countless pixels have been expended on the Democrats’ “midterm drop-off problem,” in which core Democratic groups such as young voters, minorities and single women are expected to go to the polls in lower percentages than GOP groups, putting Dem control of the Senate in peril.
What if a key part of the problem is that many of these voters simply don’t know that Democratic control of the Senate is at stake in this fall’s elections?
That’s one of the conclusions veteran Dem pollster Celinda Lake reached after conducting new focus groups and polling for the liberal group MoveOn. Lake conducted two focus groups of people from Detroit and its suburbs. One was made up of single white women under 55 and married white women under 35 (millenials). The second was all African American women. These are the same voters who are expected to drop off in many red state Senate contests, too.
“We were exploring what would motivate them to turn out to vote,” Lake tells me. “One of the things that came up is that these drop-off voters had no idea that control of the Senate was even up for grabs and were even very confused about who controlled it. These voters are very representative of drop-off voters in a lot of states.”
Lake says the focus groups — and follow-up polling Lake conducted — determined that one message that motivates these voters is that the outcome of the Senate election in their state could decide Senate control. However, that alone isn’t enough to motivate these voters. They also need to be told why it should matter to them which party controls the Senate, Lake adds.

Nicole Kidman’s father has reportedly died after suffering a fall in his Singapore hotel room
Sep 12th 2014 7:43AM
BY AOL ENTERTAINMENT
The father of Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman, Dr. Antony Kidman, a clinical psychologist, has reportedly died after suffering a fall in his Singapore hotel room.
According to Australia’s news broadcaster ABC, Dr. Kidman was in Singapore visiting Nicole’s sister, Antonia, when the fall occurred.
‘It is with great sadness that we learn of Dr. Tony Kidman’s sudden passing. During his 43 years at the University of Technology, Sydney, Tony has contributed greatly — as a colleague, as a researcher, and as a health practitioner,’ vice-chancellor professor Attila Brungs told Reuters. ‘Tony will be missed by all at UTS. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.’
The actress’s publicist and long-time friend, Wendy Day, told Daily Mail Australia that ‘the family is in shock and is grieving they would appreciate that you respect their privacy at this stage,” and also confirmed that Dr. Kidman suffered a fall in his hotel room, though didn’t release any further details on the fall.
News first circulated of the tragic death when police said they were informed that a man in his 80s had died in hospital of an ‘unnatural death.’ According to Reuters, in Singapore, an ‘unnatural death’ usually refers to one caused by a fall or accident.
Nicole Kidman, who is married to singer Keith Urban, has not released an official statement yet.

Florida police called twice in two days for George Zimmerman’s road rage
Zimmerman allegedly followed the man, threatened to kill him and staked him out at work.
By Matt Bradwell | Sept. 12, 2014 at 1:40 PM
LAKE MARY, Fla., Sept. 12 (UPI) — A man in Florida called 911 twice in two days after Treyvon Martin killer George Zimmerman allegedly repeatedly harassed him following a road rage incident on Tuesday.
The man claims Zimmerman followed him and threatened to kill him, even waiting for him at work.
Zimmerman admitted to Lake County police that he and the anonymous man had a confrontational exchange.
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2014/09/12/Florida-police-called-twice-in-two-days-for-George-Zimmermans-road-rage/5911410542744/#ixzz3D7txTJM5
Zimmerman will either kill someone or someone will kill him in self-defense.
If Zimmerman ends up killing someone, then B37 and the rest of the racist and/or stupid women who set him free should also be arrested along with him. The idiot judge and special prosecutor should too.
When it does finally happen, and it will, I hope that whoever Zimmerman tangles with gets the better of him.
I concur.

2014 Kansas election: GOP scrambles to save Pat Roberts
By MANU RAJU | 9/10/14 3:30 PM EDT Updated: 9/11/14 1:42 PM EDT
The GOP’s political machine is kicking into overdrive to save a Senate seat in Kansas that’s suddenly complicating its path to the majority.
With polls showing Sen. Pat Roberts in serious trouble against independent Greg Orman, top Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, are leaning on big-ticket donors to fill the long-time Kansas senator’s campaign coffers. Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and John McCain of Arizona are planning to barnstorm the state on Roberts’ behalf. And in a bid to boost the senator’s sagging poll numbers, the Roberts campaign is planning an ad blitz to cast his long record and seniority in Washington in a more positive light.
Republicans are also poring over Orman’s record, looking for ways to cast him as a liberal and shady businessman out to enrich himself. Local stories are popping up about a lawsuit against Orman by the boxing equipment manufacturer Everlast and a legal fight the candidate had with legendary actress Debbie Reynolds over a $1 million loan he made to her Hollywood museum.

I blame the DNC for this. How are they NOT shouting from the rooftops
What people don’t know can hurt them

By Steve Benen
For those who remain engaged in public affairs, the basics on contemporary politics are usually too obvious to even mention. We know who President Obama is and what party he belongs to; we know who Speaker of the House John Boehner is and his party affiliation; etc.
But like it or not, we’re in the minority. Most Americans don’t keep up with current events enough to know which party, for example, is in the majority in the House and the Senate.
It’s easy to lament the scope of our uninformed electorate, but in the short term, it’s also worth appreciating the practical consequence. As Greg Sargent noted yesterday, there’s new focus-group research that shows many Democratic voters are likely to skip the 2014 midterms in large part because they have no idea what’s at risk.
Lake added that the drop-off voters “had no idea that control of the Senate was even up for grabs and were even very confused about who controlled it. These voters are very representative of drop-off voters in a lot of states.”
Told that their state’s election may very well dictate control of the Senate in 2015 and 2016, these voters’ motivation went up. Reminded of specific issues at stake in the event of a Republican takeover, and their interest, not surprisingly, grew further.

Wirthman: GOP’s underhanded push for over-the-counter birth control
By Lisa Wirthman
If Republicans’ newfound enthusiasm for birth control seems suspicious, it’s with good reason. Following the lead of Colorado U.S. Senate candidate Cory Gardner, a handful of Republicans in midterm races across the country are now embracing over-the-counter sales of birth control pills without a prescription.
Don’t be fooled. It’s a disingenuous move that could actually make the pill more expensive for women, and ignores the growing popularity and effectiveness of long-acting contraceptives that are reducing unintended pregnancies here in Colorado.
In a new TV ad, Gardner calls himself “a new kind of Republican.” His mission, however, is an old one: To circumvent the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) mandate that insurance policies cover birth control without a co-pay.
Gardner claims over-the-counter access to the pill would be “cheaper and easier” for women. But women already pay for those pills as part of the health care coverage they purchase through employers. Why would we want to pay for them twice?
In fact, the ACA makes all forms of FDA-approved birth control available without co-pays — including more effective long-acting contraceptives like IUDs and implants.
What happens, however, if birth control pills are sold over the counter? Insurance companies will likely stop covering them. That means women will keep paying health insurance premiums, plus an additional out-of-pocket fee for pills that could cost up to $600 a year.

Are Kansas Republicans Heading Towards Disaster?
By Matt Osborneon
September 12, 2014Politics
If you are a big Democratic spender looking to make an impact, you won’t find a better place than Kansas. With two months left to go before the midterm election, the latest polling shows three Republican incumbents trailing their challengers in statewide contests.
Independent Greg Orman jumped to his first lead over U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, who now trails by 1 percentage point. Democratic governor nominee Paul Davis registered a 7-point advantage over Gov. Sam Brownback. Democratic secretary of state candidate Jean Schodorf broke a tie with Secretary of State Kris Kobach, procuring a 3-point margin.
[…] “It’s a nail-biter. Everyone’s talking about this race,” said Jim Jonas, Orman’s campaign manager. “Kansans are sick and tired of the partisan dysfunction in Washington, and Greg’s focus on problem solving continues to attract support from Republicans, Democrats and independents.”
Trying to divide the anti-Brownback vote, Kobach is desperately trying to keep Democrat Chad Taylor on the ballot after he withdrew from the race. Governor Brownback’s deep tax cuts have failed to spur economic growth and led to three downgrades of the state’s credit rating.
But the GOP’s woes don’t end there.
Incumbent US representative Tim Huelskamp failed to win the endorsement of farm groups two months ago, and this week a moderate group ‘Traditional Republicans for Common Sense’ endorsed his Democratic opponent Jim Sherow.

Dave Camp’s short memory
09/11/14 05:06 PM—UPDATED 09/11/14 05:42 PM
By Steve Benen
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) thinks he knows why tax reform hasn’t worked out: this, like everything else, is all President Obama’s fault.
The House’s top tax writer on Wednesday rebuked President Obama for not releasing a detailed plan to overhaul the tax code.
“I think we all get elected to lead,” Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) said. “We need some leadership.” […]
Camp, appearing at an event with Jason Furman, one of Obama’s top economic advisers, noted that the White House had only rolled out a general draft on business taxes well over two years ago. A more detailed proposal from Obama, Camp said, could give new life to the stalled tax reform effort.
According to the report in The Hill, Camp made the remarks at an event sponsored by the Business Roundtable, a group of top corporate chief executives. The Michigan Republican, who’s stepping down this year after 12 terms in Congress, added on tax reform, “I could negotiate with myself. I don’t think it would get anywhere…. But I can’t really counter what I’ve done with nothing.”

Pistorius could get 15 years for culpable homicide.
http://news.msn.com/world/pistorius-could-get-15-years-for-culpable-homicide
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — A South African judge on Friday found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp but declared him not guilty of murder. Prosecutors said they were disappointed by the ruling but would decide on whether to appeal only after sentencing.
Judge Thokozile Masipa said there was not enough evidence to support the contention that Pistorius knew Steenkamp was behind a locked toilet door in his home when he shot through the door in the predawn hours of Valentine’s Day last year. Masipa said prosecutors had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Pistorius intended to kill Steenkamp.
*sigh* HOW MUCH MORE EVIDENCE is NEEDED to convict these white men who murder and execute?

Bill Cosby: Blacks Must Prepare to Fight Voter Suppression
As a biography chronicling his career is released, the comedian’s focus is on his next sitcom and on a real-life challenge for African Americans: fair access to the ballot.
By: Jamal Watson
Posted: Sept. 12 2014 3:00 AM
Author Mark Whitaker will release his much-anticipated biography of Bill Cosby this week, three decades after the comedian debuted The Cosby Show and single-handedly altered the portrayal of African Americans on television.
Could Cosby have known back then that the NBC sitcom would become an immediate hit?
“Oh sure, I recognized it,” he told The Root with a hearty laugh. “Get out of here! The only thing I kept saying is, ‘I just hope I get enough viewers to keep it on the air.’”
For years The Cosby Show dominated the television ratings war and introduced the now 77-year-old Philadelphia native to a younger generation, unfamiliar with his well-established career as a standup comic and movie star. It also showcased Clair and Cliff Huxtable as stern but loving parents to five children.
But when writer-producer duo Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner initially tried to persuade the networks to pick up the show, they faced immediate rejection.
“I know when Tom and Marcy went to pitch the show about a family and to put it on the air, they knew that black people were coming,” says Cosby. “They didn’t say ‘black people’; they said Bill Cosby and his family. And since nobody said that they would have a white daughter-in-law and a white dog, they knew his children and his wife were black.”

Let’s Talk About the Married at First Sight Season 1 Finale
Luvvie — September 11, 2014 0 58
I fell in love with FYI’s Married at First Sight on first sight. By the end of episode 1, I was already hooked. After seeing 3 episodes of the social experiment, I was rooting for the couples, I figured out who would probably make it and I was invested in their relationships.
The couples had to get married, go on their honeymoons (for 4 days) and then move in together. In one week, they went from solo dolo to shacked up with a spouse.

Detroit Cells Sit Empty as Records Disqualify Guard Candidates
By Chris Christoff Sep 11, 2014 12:01 AM ET
Guards in Wayne County’s three jails in Detroit rack up 1,000 hours of overtime each day as the sheriff struggles to hire reinforcements and cells sit empty with no one to watch them.
Unemployment in the bankrupt city hovers at 18 percent, yet in June, with 80 open jail jobs, only three applicants completed its training program after officials scrutinized their criminal records and put them through a battery of tests. The sheriff says he needs 230 more guards.
“We’ve had officers who’ve had strokes and heart attacks on the job because they’re working so much,” said Corporal Brian Earle, president of the union representing deputies. Some work 16-hour shifts, day after day, virtually abandoning families, he said. “We have people sleeping in their cars.”
As Detroit tries to shed $7 billion of debt, Wayne County’s efforts to hold 2,500 offenders show the challenges as Michigan’s largest city tries to emerge from bankruptcy a more livable place. The lockups deal with the fallout of persistent crime. They must find employees among a low-skill workforce, many of whose members have committed crimes of their own. The county suffers from underfunding and deficits.

Gary Legum, over at Wonkette, made me chuckle a few times while covering Ted Cruz’s excellent adventure at the Defense of Christian’s Dinner on Wednesday night. It seems that Ted didn’t anticipate that Arab Christians feel roughly same way about Israel as Arab Muslims do.
Being of the Jewish persuasion, we do appreciate Ted’s defending our right to exist. But we’re not down with insufferable douche noodles trying to reduce a complex and difficult situation into a “You’re either with us or against us” meme. Our last president did that, and it worked out rather poorly for everyone.
We’re looking forward to the insane ferrets at Fox News trying to puzzle out how to feel about this video after they just spent months justifying unflinching support for Israeli policies by screaming that Obama was ignoring the problem of Christians being mass murdered in Syria and Iraq by bloodthirsty Muslims. Heads will be a-sploding, we’re sure.
And here’s a bonus clip from The Week in Cruz on Film. Check out this bit of hilarity on the Senate floor. Some background: Senate Democrats are pushing a constitutional amendment that would roll back the campaign finance excesses in Citizens United by declaring that Congress and the states can “regulate and set reasonable limits on the raising and spending of money by candidates and others to influence elections,” thus taking away the Roberts Court’s argument that money equals free speech.
Naturally, Republicans are trying to portray this as a root-and-branch repeal of the First Amendment. Which led to Edmonton Ted, who more and more looks to us like a macaroon with hair plugs, taking to the Senate floor to argue that the measure would allow the government to outlaw “Saturday Night Live” and toss Lorne Michaels in jail. We’re not sure what part of the senator’s base would actually have a problem with this, but reading the political leanings of a crowd doesn’t seem to have been Ted’s strong suit this week.
It may have been a particularly bad week for Ted Cruz but he, like zombies and mold, does not change.
