Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988), also known by the nickname the Big O, was an American singer-songwriter, best known for his trademark sunglasses, distinctive, powerful voice, complex compositions, and dark emotional ballads. Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly/country and western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success came with Monument Records between 1960 and 1964, when 22 of his songs placed on the Billboard Top 40, including “Only the Lonely“, “Crying“, and “Oh, Pretty Woman“. His career stagnated through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs and the use of “In Dreams” in David Lynch‘s film Blue Velvet (1986) revived his career.

Fox Pundits Horrified Over Obamacare Outreach Program Targeting Black Friday Shoppers

The talking heads over at Fox are very upset anyone might be helping Black Friday shoppers sign up to get health insurance… the horror!
While most of the country took the day off for the Thanksgiving holiday, the propaganda over at Faux “news” never stops. From the Thanksgiving day edition of America’s Newsroom, Fox pundits Heather Childers, Leland Vittert and Ed Henry are just appalled that we might have some health care navigators out there passing out fliers to the Black Friday shoppers and making them aware that it’s time for open enrollment again and what their options are for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.
God forbid we allow “the holidays to be politicized,” as they were carping about here, because we all know no one over at Fox would ever do that in a million years, right?
They also used the occasion to trot out Chuck Schumer’s latest gift to the right wing, where he attacked Democrats for not doing more on the economy in the beginning of President Obama’s first term in office and getting the ACA passed instead, because we all know that Schumer (D-Wall Street) is all about the little people and holding the bankers who tanked our economy accountable for their actions — and his word is now sacrosanct in the world of Chuck Schumer’s magical mystical mirror of political infallibility now loved by the right wing.
I have no idea if passing out fliers to Black Friday shoppers will do an ounce of good and get more people to sign up or not, but it seems like as good of an idea as any to remind everyone that it is time to go sign up for their insurance plans again and to help get the word out to as many people as possible.
That said, there is one thing I do know. If something helps the Obama administration or there’s even a remote possibility that something will make them look good, the pundits over on Fox are going to be against it.

Wisc. Police Come To Man’s Home, Arrest Him For Calling Them Racists On Facebook

A federal lawsuit filed by a Wisconsin man alleges that Arena police violated his civil rights by charging him for calling officers racists on Facebook.

In 2012, Thomas G. Smith had seen an Arena Police Department Facebook post thanking community members for helping to detain two black children. Smith responded with a profanity-laced message about how Arena officers were racists.
A federal lawsuit obtained by the StarTribune said that Officer Nicholas Stroik had deleted Smith’s comments, and the comments of others who accused police of targeting suspects based on race.
Smith then received a call from officers, who wanted to know if he had posted the comment. Smith replied that he had posted the Facebook message, and that he had meant it.
That night, officers arrested him at his home in Arena. He was charged with disorderly conduct and unlawful use of computerized communications.
Prosecutors asserted that his words had not been protect by the First Amendment of the Constitution because they could incite violence. Smith was convicted, and sentenced to probation with community service.
But in July, a state appellate judge overturned the case on the grounds that the Supreme Court’s so-called “fighting words doctrine” only applied when the speaker was in close proximity to the listener. The judge ruled that Smith’s Facebook messages should have been protected under the First Amendment.

‘GO BACH TO AFRICA’: School adds security after girl’s racist Ferguson tweet explodes

Officials added security at an Illinois high school after a student posted a series of racist comments online in response to the Ferguson protests.
“I don’t feel sorry for black people,” the Oakwood High School student posted on Twitter at 10:16 p.m. Monday. “If you hate us so much GO BACH TO AFRICA. We should have never bought you.”
The comments were made shortly after the announcement that a Missouri grand jury had declined to indict the officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, sparking protests and rioting in Ferguson.
“I mean this wouldn’t happen if black people wouldn’t act like hooligans,” posted the student, whose name was not released. “We don’t start a riot when white ppl die.”
Her Twitter account has since been locked.

N.J. ends $118M contract designed to ease enrollment in Medicaid and other welfare programs

Gov. Chris Christie’s administration has pulled the plug on a seven-year-old $118.3 million contract for what had been billed as a “comprehensive and cutting-edge” computer system to make Medicaid, food stamps and other social welfare programs easier to manage, including some that have been hobbled by backlogs, NJ Advance Media has learned.
The state Department of Human Services’ contract with Hewlett Packard to produce the Consolidated Assistance Support System, better known as CASS, “has been terminated, and an analysis is in progress to determine next steps,” department spokeswoman Nicole Brossoie confirmed. “The state and the vendor are still in talks regarding the contract termination, so it’s premature to discuss any other aspects at this time.”
A spokesman for the Palo Alto, Calif. information technology company declined to discuss what happened in New Jersey.
“Out of respect, HP does not comment on customer relationships,” Hewlett Packard spokesman Blair J. Hinderliter said in an email Wednesday.
Raymond Castro, a senior analyst for the liberal-leaning think tank New Jersey Policy Perspective, said the lack of a modern automated system “certainly has contributed to this enormous backlog in the Medicaid expansion” associated with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, in New Jersey.
As of Oct. 22, about 11,000 applications were pending from people who wanted to enroll in Medicaid, the health insurance program for the poor that was expanded to handle Obamacare applicants, a department official said.
Castro called the contract’s termination on top of the numerous delays in setting up the computer system “enormously frustrating.”
