Edward Herrmann, who won an Emmy for “The Practice” and famously played Lorelai’s dad on “Gilmore Girls,” died on Wednesday, his manager confirmed to HuffPost Entertainment. He was 71.

“Edward Herrmann, besides being an accomplished actor, he was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man. He will be sorely missed,” Herrmann’s manager, Robbie Kass, wrote in an email to HuffPost Entertainment.

TMZ was first to report Herrmann’s death. The site reported that he died in a New York hospital after battling brain cancer in recent months.

Newlywed man, 95, dies after wife taken away
    Associated Press By BRETT ZONGKER

A 95-year-old newlywed Virginia man has died just weeks after his 96-year-old wife was taken away by family members to Florida.

Eddie Harrison died Tuesday in a hospital after suffering from influenza, said Rebecca Wright, who was caring for the couple in their Alexandria, Virginia, home. Harrison became distressed after his wife and longtime companion, 96-year-old Edith Hill, was taken away, Wright said. Wright is Hill’s daughter.

“He lived for her, and she lived for him. It’s the love story of the century,” Wright said, recalling how they would dance, take walks and care for each other.

Harrison and Hill’s marriage this year after 10 years of companionship was disputed in court. Their wedding was problematic because Hill has been declared legally incapacitated for several years. Another of Hill’s daughters, Patricia Barber, contested the marriage, saying it would complicate the eventual distribution of Hill’s estate. But Hill and Harrison said they wanted to stay together.

    I can’t believe Luther’s been gone for a decade.

I was thinking about, what about a Luther Vandross movie…

should they get an ACTOR and then dub the music…

or a SINGER and hope about the acting.

I’ve come down on the side of getting an ACTOR.

    I was thinking Wendell Pierce.

Bill would let Pence run for gov, White House in 2016

    Tom LoBianco, tom.lobianco@indystar.com 9:52 a.m. EST December 31, 2014

Legislation would let Ind. Gov. Mike Pence seek governor’s office and White House in 2016

Indiana voters could find something unusual on the ballot in 2016 under a measure state lawmakers will consider next year. Gov. Mike Pence’s name could appear twice, once for governor and once for president of the United States.

A lot of “ifs” stand in the way of that happening — including Pence ultimately deciding to run for the White House and winning the Republican Party nomination. But state Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, has submitted legislation that would help clear the way for Pence to seek two offices at once.

Delph’s proposal, which was provided to The Indianapolis Star this week, would expand Indiana’s election law to allow a sitting governor or state lawmaker to seek both re-election and election to any federal office at the same time.

“I think it’s good for the state of Indiana to have a sitting governor in the national conversation and because of that I think it’s in our interest to make the obstacles and roadblocks for Pence as minimal as possible,” Delph said.

Delph and the state’s other 149 lawmakers could all benefit from the measure, depending on their ambitions. But Delph, who had flirted with the idea of running for Congress in the past, said he will not run for higher office and said the focus of this measure is Pence.

Chris Rock’s Divorce: Is It Getting Ugly?

The divorce between Chris Rock and his wife of over 18 years, Malaak Compton-Rock, has the potential to get messy.

In his divorce filing with the Superior Court of New Jersey, the Top Five director and star, 49, claims that Compton-Rock, 45, has kept his daughters – Lola, 12, and Zahra, 10 – away from him.

According to the divorce papers obtained by PEOPLE, Rock maintains that “[Compton-Rock] has repeatedly refused to permit [him] normal and usual access to the children, and has acted in a manner detrimental to the children’s best interests.”

Compton-Rock released a statement to PEOPLE through her lawyer contesting these claims.

In education-crazy South Korea, top teachers become multimillionaires
    By Anna Fifield December 30

SEOUL — Clasping his headphones and closing his eyes as he sang into the studio microphone while performing a peppy duet with one of South Korea’s hottest actresses, spiky-haired Cha Kil-yong looked every bit the K-pop star.

But Cha is not a singer or actor. No, he’s a unique kind of South Korean celebrity: a teaching star.

And the song he was singing with Clara, a Korean mega celebrity, in a music video that wouldn’t be out of place on MTV? It was called “SAT jackpot!”

In this education-obsessed country, Cha is a top-ranked math teacher. But he doesn’t teach in a school. He runs an online “hagwon” — or cram school — called SevenEdu that focuses entirely on preparing students to take the college entrance exam in mathematics.

Here, teaching pays: Cha said he earned a cool $8 million last year.

UN Fails to Pass Palestinian Resolution

A Palestinian-backed resolution to end Israeli occupation failed to pass in the UN Security Council on Tuesday, falling one vote short of the nine “yes” votes required for adoption by the council. The resolution, which called for the end of Israeli occupation within three years, received eight “yes” votes, two “no” votes from the United States and Australia, as well as five abstentions. The U.S., Israel’s closest ally, reiterated its stance on opposing the resolution in favor of striking a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine that did not involve a timetable. “We voted against this resolution not because we are comfortable with the status quo. We voted against it because… peace must come from hard compromises that occur at the negotiating table,” U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said.

Striking a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine that did not involve a timetable? When will that be? When all the Palestinian land is gone and Israel has staked their claim to all of the land and resources? Then and only then can the will the Israelis end the occupation because there will be nothing left to “occupy.”

When, dear Lord, will this country’s political “leaders” let go of the Israeli albatross and spend the money they cost us (and which they do not really need) on our own people?
