More 80’s pop and freestyle music… today’s featured artists are Expose’and Crowded House.
Exposé is an American vocal group. Primarily consisting of lead vocalists Ann Curless, Jeanette Jurado, and Gioia Bruno, the group achieved much of their success between 1987 and 1993, becoming the first group to have four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart from their debut album, including their 1988 #1 hit “Seasons Change”.
The group was popular in dance clubs, mainstream Top 40 and adult contemporary charts in the United States. The group actively toured and recorded music from 1985 to 1995, then retired from recording and public performances until 2003, and currently tour today.
Formation of the group and original members (1984–1986)
Exposé was initially formed in 1984 when Lewis Martineé, a Miami disc jockey and producer, decided to form a dance-based group. Working with his partners Ismael Garcia and Frank Diaz at Pantera Productions, talent scouts hired Sandra Casañas (Sandeé), Alejandra Lorenzo (Alé), and Laurie Miller as the group’s lineup, under the title X-Posed later Exposé. The next year, the trio recorded “Point of No Return” for Pantera Records as a 12-inch vinyl single, which became a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
The song helped to introduce a still-popular genre of music that became known as freestyle, which often features keyboard riffs, a sing-along chorus, and electro funk drum-machine patterns in the music arrangement. The success of “Point of No Return” on the dance charts caught the attention of major labels and Expose signed with Arista Records, which promptly assumed distribution of the 12-inch vinyl single. A year later, Exposé recorded and released its second club-dance freestyle 12-inch single entitled “Exposed to Love”. These songs were released during the period when radio began airing continuous mixes of House/Club/Dance songs in major markets. As such, Exposé realized continued success, including a club tour to key cities. Impressed with the performance of the two singles on the dance charts, Arista granted approval for the group to record a full-length album.

Crowded House is a rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985. The founding members were New Zealander Neil Finn (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter), and Australians Paul Hester (drums) and Nick Seymour (bass). Later band members included Neil’s brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod.
Originally active from 1985 to 1996, the band has had consistent commercial and critical success in Australia and New Zealand and international chart success in two phases, beginning with their self-titled debut album, which reached number twelve on the US Album Chart in 1987 and provided the Top Ten hits, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Something So Strong”. Further international success came in the UK and Europe with their third and fourth albums, Woodface and Together Alone and the compilation album Recurring Dream, which included the hits “Fall at Your Feet”, “Weather with You”, “Distant Sun”, “Locked Out”, “Instinct” and “Not the Girl You Think You Are”. Queen Elizabeth II bestowed an OBE on both Neil and Tim Finn, in June 1993, for their contribution to the music of New Zealand.
Founding drummer Hester left in May 1994, citing family reasons, but briefly returned for their Farewell to the World concerts in Melbourne and Sydney in 1996. Neil Finn had decided to end the band to concentrate on his solo career and the Finn Brothers project with Tim.[1] On 26 March 2005 Hester committed suicide, aged 46.
In 2006 the group re-formed with new drummer Matt Sherrod and have since released two further albums, both of which reached number one on Australia’s Album Chart.

House GOP Demands To Know What Obama Will Do If SCOTUS Guts Obamacare

Senior House Republicans are demanding that the Obama administration reveal its contingency plans in the event that the Supreme Court scraps Obamacare subsidies in three dozen states.
Five Republicans on the powerful Energy & Commerce Committee made their request in a letter Wednesday to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell.
“Specifically, we are examining the extent to which the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and other relevant agencies of the federal government, are preparing for the possible consequences of the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of King v. Burwell,” wrote the lawmakers.
The lawmakers are Energy & Commerce Chair Fred Upton (R-MI), Health Subcommittee Chair Joseph Pitts (R-PA), Oversight Subcommittee Chair Tim Murphy (R-PA), Chair Emeritus Joe Barton (R-TX) and Vice Chair Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

When Astrid Muhammad heard her phone ring on Friday, Jan. 16, the last thing she expected was a call from the White House inviting her to attend this year’s State of the Union as a guest of the first lady.
A wife and mother of two young children, Muhammad woke up on a spring morning in 2013 and knew something was wrong. A visit to the doctor in May revealed a mass growing on her brain. At the time she didn’t have health insurance and delayed treatment and surgery that, according to neurosurgeons, would mean the difference between life and death.
Prior to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could have refused treatment for her pre-existing tumor, charged higher rates or denied her coverage altogether. But, after discovering the Health Insurance Marketplace, Muhammad was able to find quality affordable health insurance coverage.
So this past summer, she had her tumor successfully removed and is now moving on with her life.
And she is not alone. She attended the President’s State of the Union address as a representative of all those who have received insurance and care which has changed or saved their lives, or given them the peace of mind they need to rest more easily, without the worry that an unexpected health challenge could threaten their lives or livelihoods.

London Colvin, a 21-year-old junior at the HBCU, claims that two police officers held her down while the canine attacked her.
A Norfolk State University student suffered several injuries when, she claims, a police dog attacked her while she was being arrested for not giving information about a fight she was not involved in.
According to Potomac Local, 21-year-old London Colvin, who is also a private in the Army Reserves, was at an off-campus party when a fight broke out around 2:15 a.m. Sunday. Colvin reportedly refused to give officers information about what took place.
“She was at a party off campus. She said that a fight broke out, and she had nothing to do with the fight. She did say she was at the party, and her and her friends were leaving,” Whitney Dunn, the victim’s cousin, told the newspaper. “She was definitely being loud—she did admit to that.”
Colvin did not speak with the newspaper, but Dunn, a spokeswoman for the family, told the newspaper that as Colvin, a second-semester junior, was leaving the party, an officer approached her.

The very bad second episode is seeming more and more like a fluke; this week’s installment revealed a show that is confident in what it is, despite still being messy.

Empire: False Imposition

There’s a lot of astonishingly tone deaf if not downright condescending chatter right now as to “why” Empire is such a massive hit; a question or concern that didn’t greet, say, Revenge when it had a successful launch and popular first season. Certainly, it shouldn’t be considered out of bounds to discuss the cultural implications of a night-time soap opera with a predominantly black cast gaining a large audience, but there’s this underlying tone that’s part “Black people have discovered television!” and part “White teenagers have discovered black people!” Hey, how about, it’s a show with a really talented cast and creators, with a rather high number of Oscar, Emmy and Grammy nominations (and wins) among them; a situation that, if everyone involved was white, would be referred to as a show with a high “pedigree” whose success wouldn’t ever be questioned or need to be explained?
We’re gonna go with that.

QVC host apologizes for ‘hair’ comments, says she wasn’t referring to black female model

It was supposed to be just another QVC segment on Dooney and Bourke products.
But when host Sandra Bennett seemed to make light of a black woman’s natural hair who was modeling at the time, things went south real quick.
Bennett says it was all one big misunderstanding.
During the segment, the camera pans to a black woman named “Michelle” modeling a Dooney and Bourke purse. Then Bennett says “You might look back and think, ‘Why’d I wear my hair like that?’ but you’ll still like your purse.” Her co-host for the segment then replies: “That’s right. You won’t look at your hair in the picture – you’ll look at your handbag.”

Against Putin, Obama gets the last laugh

In his State of the Union address last week, President Obama didn’t name names, but he reminded some of his critics in the Republican Party that their praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin was sadly mistaken.
“Last year, as we were doing the hard work of imposing sanctions along with our allies, as we were reinforcing our presence with frontline states, Mr. Putin’s aggression it was suggested was ‘a masterful display’ of ‘strategy and strength.’ That’s what I heard from some folks,” Obama said. “Well, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated with its economy in tatters. That’s how America leads – not with bluster, but with persistent, steady resolve.”
Obama had reason to feel good – and take a not-so-subtle dig at Putin’s GOP fans. Not only is the American recovery gaining strength, but as Matt O’Brien explained yesterday, Russia’s credit rating was downgraded this week to “junk” status.
[I]f Russia is rated junk, then its companies will be too – which will increase the borrowing costs on their existing debt. It could also trigger earlier bond repayments, which, together with the higher interest rates, could, according to one official, cost them as much as $20 to $30 billion.
And that’s $20 to $30 billion it really can’t afford. Russia, as I’ve said before, doesn’t have an economy so much as an oil-exporting business that subsidizes everything else. But it can’t subsidize much when prices are only $50-a-barrel.
The confluence of economic events unfolding in Russia is amazing: cheap gas, banks in need of a bailout, crashing currency, high interest rates, and an inability to repay debts, all against the backdrop of additional sanctions.

It appears Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes decided to celebrate her co-star’s birthday with quite the unique gift. How does a cease and desist letter sound for a present?
“I guess this is @NeNeLeakes way of saying happy birthday!” Moore shared on Instagram Tuesday night with a photo of the letter she received. “#RHOA #HypocrisyAtItsBest #ByeGirl #SheTriedIt #SoNastySoRude.”
In the letter, Moore is ordered to stop making “any and all false and defamatory statements” that could be injurious to Leakes’ character and reputation.
It went on to say her postings on BravoTV have been “false, malicious and ostensibly made with the intent to cause damage to [Leakes’] reputation.”
While Leakes has yet to directly address the case, the Bravolebrity tweeted, “The Thirst Is Real! They need me for press because they can’t get none.” E! News has reached out to Leakes’ attorney for comment.
