Yet another black church in the South went up in flames Tuesday night, this time historic Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal in Williamsburg County, South Carolina — 20 years after it was burned to the ground by Ku Klux Klan members.
The Clarendon County Fire Department said shortly before midnight ET that the fire was under control, but it released a photo showing the church with its roof apparently completely collapsed.
Williamsburg County Fire Chief Randy Swinton told NBC News it wasn’t known whether the fire was intentionally set, noting that a lightning storm passed through the area about the same time the blaze was reported.
No injuries were immediately reported, but The Kingstree News of Williamsburg County reported that the church was “gutted.”
It’s the latest in a string of fires at predominantly black Southern churches that began after a white gunman killed nine black worshipers at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, about 50 miles south of Greeleyville, on June 17.

Rand Paul Wants To Sell Off America’s Public Lands

At a campaign stop in Nevada on Monday, Kentucky Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul called for the federal government to sell off and privatize America’s national forests and other public lands.
As part of his “Stand With Rand” tour, Sen. Paul told an audience in the Nevada town of Mesquite that the federal government is a “bully” and that national public lands should be under state and private control, as reported by CNN.
“You run into problems now with the federal government being, you know, this bully — this big huge government bully,” Paul said. “You would have less of that if you had more local ownership of the land. State ownership would be better, but even better would be private ownership.”
A notable guest in the audience was outlaw Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who infamously refused to pay more than $1 million in grazing fees owed to taxpayers, resulting in a dangerous standoff in April 2014 with federal land management officials. Bundy is also widely known for his racist views, anti-government ideology and refusal to acknowledge the authority of the federal government, in particular over public lands.

Valedictorian gives graduation speech at school where dad is custodian

This year, the valedictorian of Wilson Magnet High School thanked her immigrant father — who also happens to be the supervising custodian of her school — for her success.
When Biiftu Duresso, an 18-year-old from Rochester, New York, graduated at the top of her class this past Saturday, she made it a point to thank all those who inspired her, including her father, Jamal Abdullahi, an Ethiopian immigrant who works at her school.
“My parents Jamal and Zubaida made their way to Rochester, New York, from Ethiopia in the 80’s and 90’s,” Biiftu said in her speech. “They had the audacity to imagine something better for me and my siblings.”
Abdullahi grew up poor in Ethopia during a civil war, spent some time detained as a teen soldier and later escaped to Somalia. When he made it to America in 1983, he spoke no English and took odd jobs, eventually taking a part-time position as a custodian.
According to Democrat and Chronicle, as he moved up the ranks at his custodial job, he worked towards getting his GED and ultimately ended up getting both his associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. His passion for education is what fueled him to push his children.
“I tell them, ‘All I can do is to help you, but it is your future, you must help yourself,’” Abdullahi told Yahoo Parenting. “And I said that people respect those who have education, and it helps opportunities come up for you.”
His daughter Biiftu is headed to Columbia University’s Barnard College in the fall. She hopes to become a doctor and open a clinic in Ethiopia to help the people who are not as fortunate as her family.

Up until a few weeks ago, I worked at a historic site in the South that included an old house and a nearby plantation. My job was to lead tours and tell guests about the people who made plantations possible: the slaves.
The site I worked at most frequently had more than 100 enslaved workers associated with it— 27 people serving the household alone, outnumbering the home’s three white residents by a factor of nine. Yet many guests who visited the house and took the tour reacted with hostility to hearing a presentation that focused more on the slaves than on the owners.

Looking back on this interview from 2005, it’s interesting to see that PBO’s vision has remained remarkably constant. His take on lack of follow through by certain groups is particulary relevant today.
“Conducting a session in a New Horizons classroom, Obama, tall and thin, looks very much like an Ivy League graduate student. Dressed casually prep, his tie loosened and his top shirt button unfastened, he leads eight black women from the Grand Boulevard community through a discussion of “what folks should know” about who in Chicago has power and why they have it. It’s one of his favorite topics, and the class bubbles with suggestions about how “they” got to be high and mighty.

Anthony Mackie will play Martin Luther King, Jr. in HBO’s adaptation of Robert Schenkkan’s Broadway play, “All the Way,” which centers on then President Lyndon B. Johnson’s efforts to maneuver members of the 88th United States Congress to enact, and Martin Luther King, Jr. to support, the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The play apparently takes its name from Johnson’s 1964 campaign slogan, “All the Way with LBJ.” It premiered on Broadway in March 2014, in a production directed by Bill Rauch, which won the 2014 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play.
Bryan Cranston won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as LBJ, and he will also star in the HBO adaptation, which will be directed by Jay Roach, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

Laurence Fishburne is the first actor to be cast in the upcoming remake of “Roots,” which History, A&E and Lifetime have all teamed up for, calling it a scripted event series for a new generation of viewers, which will simulcast on all three flagship networks.
Fishburne will play Alex Haley (James Earl Jones played him in the original 1970s series).

Diplomacy with Iran enjoys strong support from US public

The good thing about an arbitrary, self-imposed deadline is that it can be moved without consequence. The international diplomatic talks with Iran, for example, were supposed to wrap up yesterday, but negotiators believe they’re still making progress so they gave themselves an extension – the new deadline is next Tuesday, July 7.
It’s still unclear if an agreement will ultimately come together, and recent posturing from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei hasn’t helped. But the process continues to move forward, and just yesterday, the International Atomic Energy Agency reportedly concluded that Iran is complying with requirements that it reduce its stocks of enriched uranium. Had the IAEA uncovered evidence to the contrary, the talks may have very well unraveled.
As for the domestic politics surrounding the nuclear negotiations, Senate Republicans continue to complain bitterly about the diplomatic efforts, though it’s clear the public feels differently.
By a 2-to-1 margin, more Americans support the United States and other world powers pursuing a nuclear deal with Iran than oppose it, according to new results from the most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Thirty-six percent of respondents say they back the deal, which intends to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon by allowing inspections into the country’s nuclear sites in exchange for reducing economic sanctions that are currently in place. By comparison, 17 percent oppose it.
These results are largely unchanged from a similar poll a few months ago.

Obama’s place in history becomes even more secure

It was about eight months ago when Paul Krugman, who hasn’t always been President Obama’s biggest fan, said what many in the political establishment would not. “Obama has emerged,” Krugman wrote, “as one of the most consequential and, yes, successful presidents in American history.”
To be sure, it is a little early to start reflecting on the Obama’s place in history, since his presidency still has over a year to go, during which time much can happen. But after last week – the Affordable Care Act’s success at the Supreme Court, the breakthrough on marriage equality, the advances of the administration’s trade agenda, the breathtaking eulogy in Charleston – there’s been renewed talk, not just about Obama’s rejuvenated presidency, but also about his qualifications for the pantheon of American leaders of historic consequence.
My msnbc colleague Benjy Sarlin published a thoughtful piece on the Obama legacy over the weekend.
“At the end of the day, we’re part of a long-running story,” Obama told the New Yorker’s David Remnick in one interview. “We just try to get our paragraph right.”
Now consider what the paragraph version of Obama’s presidency looks like as of now, with the key terms for next week’s social studies midterm highlighted in bold.
“The first black president, President Obama took office amid the Great Recession, stabilized the economy with a stimulus and auto bailout, passed universal health care and Wall Street reform over fierce opposition, and implemented a suite of regulations aimed at combatting climate change. The first president to embrace marriage equality, he presided over the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing it nationwide.”
I think Sarlin’s right on both counts. First, that’s a pretty impressive paragraph that suggets Obama will be remembered as a great and important president.

Victim of Charleston Massacre’s Kids Granted Full College Scholarships

No one will ever forget the tragedy that took place on June 17 at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. That’s when Dylann Roof killed nine members of the church during their weekly Bible study. What Roof did has reignited discussions about racism and the Confederate flag. As the nation continues to talk about what happened, the lives of these innocent victims continue to be remembered.
The victims, now known as the Emanuel Nine, are Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Cynthia Hurd, Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Tywanza Sanders, Ethel Lance, Susie Jackson, DePayne Middleton Doctor, Rev. Daniel Simmons, and Myra Thompson.
Because of what happened on that dreadful day, Southern Wesleyan University is stepping up and making a difference. The university is offering full scholarships to DePayne Middleton Doctor’s children, if they wish to attend. The names of Doctor’s children are Gracyn, Kaylin, Hali, and Czana.
Doctor was an admissions coordinator at the university’s learning center and received her master’s degree in Management from the university in 1994.
SWU Vice President Chad Peters said, “We realize the scholarships won’t ease the pain of loss that the children are dealing with now and in the future; however, it is our desire as a community for each of them to know we care about them.

It’s called “I am Khama,” and will deal with King Khama III’s 1895 campaign to protect Botswana (in what was them called Bechuanaland) from plunder by the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes, and the eventual tour of Britain by the monarch, where he lobbied against the annexation of his country by Rhodes’ British South Africa Company.

Obama administration delivers big blow to Shell’s Arctic drilling plans
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration delivered a major blow to Shell’s Arctic drilling plans on Tuesday, by ruling that wildlife protections bar the company from simultaneously boring two wells into the Chukchi Sea this summer.
The decision will force Shell to scale back its hopes of completing two exploratory oil wells in waters north of Alaska this summer and is another setback for the firm that has spent seven years and $7 billion trying to find crude in the Arctic Ocean.
At issue is the Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to allow sound from Shell’s planned drilling to disturb walruses, polar bears and other marine mammals in the area. Although the agency authorized some of those animal disturbances, it said Shell cannot simultaneously bore planned wells that are just nine miles apart because a 2013 regulation requires a 15-mile buffer zone around active drilling rigs.
Under the ruling, Shell can still move two contracted rigs to its Burger prospect 70 miles northwest of Alaska’s coastline, but only one can be drilling at any given time.
…Federal regulators are requiring Shell to have two rigs in the region, in case an emergency forces the company to bore a relief well. But Shell had hoped to keep both of those working simultaneously to maximize an already narrow window for drilling that opens July 15 and closes on Sept. 28.
That tight timeline means Shell’s hopes of finishing even two wells this summer were far from guaranteed. But Shell needs both to confirm its hunch that oil is lurking at the site and begin to define how big the bounty could be.
Shell and Obama administration officials have been grappling with the marine mammal disturbance provision for months. Shell had asked the Fish and Wildlife Service to grant a variance from the 15-mile buffer requirement, but the agency appeared to have little latitude to make such exemptions under the existing regulations.
“We have strong requirements, and we have to hold firm on those requirements — and we expect that Shell will comply with them,” said Tommy Beaudreau, chief of staff for Interior Secretary Sally Jewell…

On Wednesday, the Obama administration will begin choking off the
financial lifeline of for-profit colleges whose graduates can’t find
well-paying jobs — and the move is likely to accelerate a wave of
shutdowns for an industry taking assaults from all sides.
Reining in the multibillion-dollar industry has been the administration’s goal for most of President Barack Obama’s term in office, fueled by
complaints that for-profit colleges lure students with misleading promises, then saddle them with debts they can’t pay back despite their newly granted degrees. Its latest tool is the Education Department’s long-debated “gainful employment” rule, which requires colleges to track their graduates’ performance in the workforce and eventually will cut off funding for career training programs that fall short.
The rule — upheld by a court ruling last week and set to take
effect Wednesday — will trigger the closure of 1,400 programs that
together enroll 840,000 students, the department has estimated. Ninety-nine percent of those students attend for-profits.

Agree, but I wouldn’t let any “media professionals” off the hook. They are just smart enough to know what they are doing and greedy enough to do it for the money. But they are not intelligent enough or brave enough to be real investigative reporters. They are frauds, basically, and corporate media wants them exactly as they are.

What I want to know is WHY the show can’t explain the TOTALITY of their lives? WHY would it be so hard to do so?

What the show cannot portray is too much back story. You never learn, for example, that Ms. Smith’s mother has lupus and her aunt has diabetes, making it a challenge for them to attend her performances. You never find out why Mr. Maddox’s house was set afire or understand that he came to J-setting from his experience in his high school marching band, where he yearned to do what the girls were doing.
Nor do you learn that Mr. Collins, the patient squad leader with the teddy bear physique who plays den mother and drill sergeant to his sometimes obstreperous team, was an honors student who won a scholarship to Texas A&M University, but joined the military instead.
“If I went to A&M, I would still be reliant on my mama,” he said. He
will also tell you that basic training was the happiest time of his
life. “It taught me team building and to face a lot of my fears.”

Female pastors in Clarendon County receive letters threatening their safety

CLARENDON COUNTY, SC (WIS) – Two Clarendon County pastors say they have been targeted with threats of violence just because they are women.
The two pastors received letters where the writer used Bible verses to threaten the women, leaving them concerned about their safety. One letter was left on the front door of Society Hill AME Church on June 10th for Pastor Mary Rhodes.
“Whoever wrote this letter has taken the rime to find out who I am which means you may know my children, my grandchildren, and I have no clue who you are” Pastor Rhodes said.
Four days later, Pastor Valarie Bartley received the same letter at Reevesville AME Church.
The writer, who identifies as Apostle Prophet Harry Leon Fleming, says in the letter that “the woman cannot be head of the man in church, home and the world.”
“A lot of people do not respect female pastors,” Pastor Rhodes said. “Sexism in the church has been around for the longest time and it always gets, to my opinion, sort of hidden under the other issues that are there.”
Investigators from the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office say that one other church led by a female pastor also received the letter.
Pastor Bartley says she worried about their safety because all three churches are located in rural areas.
“We have great concern about who is doing this and we pray they will stop,” Pastor Bartley said.
Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett says he is taking the letters seriously.

Where are the results of the investigations of the other churches.? Why does the media not send their investigative journalists to these locations to push for updates of the investigations of law enforcement? I hope the twitter world floods the media and pressures them to focus continually on these burnings.

Yes, I believe that. These are white nationalists supporting their brother Dylann Roof and trying to make his terrorist act even larger. So they burn black churches and show the world that they are cowards. This country needs to direct more resources into fighting domestic terrorism.
