Serena Williams Beat Maria Sharapova For The 17th Straight Time. But Serena Still Makes Less Money.
by Judd Legum Jul 9, 2015 3:12pm
Serena Williams crushed Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals of Wimbledon on Thursday. The 6-2, 6-4 thrashing was Williams’ seventeenth straight victory over Sharapova.
It has been 11 years since Sharapova last beat Williams. Since that time, Williams has won an incredible 14 Grand Slam titles. Williams has won 20 overall, nearing the all-time record of 24 set by Margaret Court in 1974.
Sharapova has 5 Grand Slam titles. She has lost to Serena in a Grand Slam final three times.
Of late, Williams has been particularly dominant. If she is victorious in the Wimbledon final it will be her fourth straight Grand Slam victory. (The accomplishment is known as the “Serena Slam” since she achieved the feat in 2003.)
But it is Sharapova, not Williams, who makes the most money. In 2014, she was listed as Forbes’ highest paid female athlete, earning $24.4 million. Serena earned $22 million.
The difference is endorsements. Sharapova earned $22 million in endorsements along and just $2.4 million in prize money. Williams, dominant on the court, took home $11 million in prize money but just $11 million in endorsements.
Serena Williams is the most dominant female athlete of our era and perhaps any era. So why isn’t she earning more in endorsements?
Kevin Adler, a marketing expert, suggested there is a double standard for male and female athletes. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a popular male athlete who doesn’t also have physicality and sex appeal. But that comes second to winning for guys, whereas for female athletes, looks come first,” Adler told Women’s Wear Daily in 2013.
This isn’t to suggest that Serena Williams is not attractive. But perceptions of her body are frequently overlaid with racist stereotypes. Sharapova, by contrast, is blond, thin, leggy and has worked as a model. In the eyes of corporate marketers, that is apparently valued more than on-court performance.

Wisconsin’s Walker to sign new abortion ban
07/10/15 12:46 PM—UPDATED 07/10/15 12:48 PM
By Steve Benen
On Monday, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) will formally kick off his presidential campaign, but before he does, the Republican governor has one more culture-war accomplishment he’ll add to his list. As msnbc’s Irin Carmon reported last night, state lawmakers have now approved a 20-week abortion ban, which Walker is ready to sign into law.
In October, during a gubernatorial re-election campaign that featured a Walker campaign ad soft-pedaling his stance on abortion, Walker had evaded a direct answer on his position on such a bill. “Those are things that we’ll have to talk about in the next legislative session if it comes up,” Walker said in October.
But the Republican Wisconsin Senate majority leader told the New York Times last month that Walker did, in fact, have a lot to say about the bill: He asked for a 20-week abortion ban bill that contained no exceptions for rape and incest.
In other words, Walker can’t very well say he was just going along with the wishes of the Republican-led legislature – the governor specifically requested this legislation and dictated its provisions.
It appears to be his springboard into the presidential race.
Walker’s office has already told reporters he’ll sign the bill, which makes it a felony to terminate a pregnancy after 20 weeks, threatening doctors with a three-year prison sentence, though it’s unclear exactly when the governor will put his signature on the legislation.
As regular readers may recall, roughly 99% of abortions occur before the 21st week of a pregnancy, which means these later terminations often involve “rare, severe fetal abnormalities and real threats to a woman’s health.” It’s why the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is so strongly against proposals like these.

Senate downplays Obamacare repeal
‘No deadline,’ says Sen. John Barrasso, as House conservatives cry foul.
By Jennifer Haberkorn and Rachael Bade
7/9/15 5:19 AM EDT
Updated 7/9/15 6:56 AM EDT
July was supposed to be the big month for Obamacare repeal in Congress.
But Senate Republicans are downplaying expectations that they’ll use a powerful budget tool called reconciliation to undo Obamacare through a simple majority vote this summer — and conservatives are none too pleased.
Republicans pledged earlier this year that they would use the budget’s reconciliation tool to knock out parts of Obamacare. That was to start this month, to get rid of some unpopular Obamacare taxes or mandates even if they can’t scrap the whole law.
But persistent divisions among Republicans, along with the reelection concerns of some GOP senators in liberal or swing states, are again slowing things down.
The chairmen of the key Senate committees overseeing Obamacare — Orrin Hatch of Finance, and Lamar Alexander of Health, Education, Labor and Pensions — say they haven’t drawn up reconciliation plans, saying doing so is up to leadership

Katherine Archuleta, Director of Office of Personnel Management, Resigns
By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS
JULY 10, 2015
WASHINGTON — Katherine Archuleta, the director of the Office of Personnel Management, will resign effective Friday, according to a White House official, one day after it was revealed that sweeping cyberintrusions at the agency resulted in the theft of the personal information of more than 22 million people.
Ms. Archuleta went to the White House on Friday morning to personally inform Mr. Obama of her decision, saying that she felt new leadership was needed at the federal personnel agency to enable it to “move beyond the current challenges,” the official said. The president accepted her resignation.
Beth Cobert, the deputy director of management at the Office of Management and Budget, will step in to temporarily replace Ms. Archuleta while a permanent replacement is found.
Ms. Archuleta, who assumed her post in November 2013, had been under pressure to resign since last month, when she announced the first of two separate but related computer intrusions that compromised the personal information of 4.2 million current and former federal workers, including Social Security numbers, addresses, health and financial histories and other private details.

The Kids of Rev. Run, Damon Dash, Master P, El DeBarge & Pepa Will Be ‘Growing Up Hip Hop’

WE tv has ordered the six-episode “docu-series” “Growing Up Hip Hop” from Entertainment One (eOne), scheduled for a late 2015 premiere. The series follows the next generation of “hip hop royalty” as they attempt to step outside the shadow of their famous families.
The offspring of old-schoolers like Rev. Run, Russell Simmons, Damon Dash, Master P, El DeBarge and Pepa (of Salt & Pepa fame) will try to build their own life and fortune in careers ranging from music to acting and fashion, while being challenged, at every turn, with maintaining their own identity as they evolve the hip-hop culture they come from.

Can’t Fire Him: Republican Party Frets Over What to Do With Trump
JULY 9, 2015
Republican Party leaders agonize over the prospect that Donald Trump will mount a third-party candidacy that could undermine their nominee. They fear insulting the white working-class voters who admire him. They are loath to tangle with a threat-flinging firebrand for whom there are no rules of engagement.
Since the start of Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign, a vexing question has hovered over his candidacy: Why have so many party leaders — privately appalled by Mr. Trump’s remarks about immigrants from Mexico — not renounced him?
It turns out, interviews show, that the mathematical delicacy of a Republican victory in 2016 — and its dependence on aging, anxious white voters — make it exceedingly perilous for the Republican Party to treat Mr. Trump as the pariah many of its leaders now wish he would become.
Even as a cascade of corporations and business partners — from NBC and Macy’s to the chefs at two planned restaurants — rush to sever their ties with Mr. Trump, Republican leaders seem deeply torn and paralyzed by indecision.Continue reading the main story
A few weeks ago, those divisions were on vivid display at a regular gathering of top Republican elected officials, strategists and the chairman of the Republican National Committee. Over dinner at the Hay-Adams Hotel opposite the White House, some argued for a swift response, fearing Mr. Trump would mar the coming Republican presidential debates with his needless provocations. Others counseled a hands-off approach, fearing attempts to rein him in would only turn him into a political martyr and, worse, tempt him toward that third-party run.
No consensus was reached, and the party chairman, Reince Priebus, left with no clear directive, according to two attendees at the dinner.
Dispirited party elders, worried that Republicans are handing Democratic rivals a powerful campaign weapon by allowing Mr. Trump’s voice to be depicted as representative of the party, are sounding the alarm with growing urgency.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/10/us/politics/donald-trump-republican-party-debate.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0
Well, actually, Mr. Trump’s voice really is representative of the Republican party.

Jeb Bush and allies hit their mark, raise $114M for 2016 bid
By JULIE BYKOWICZ and THOMAS BEAUMONT
Jul. 9, 2015 5:44 PM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — Fulfilling ambitions to raise a historic amount of money in pursuit of the White House, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush and his allies took full advantage of the nation’s evolving campaign finance laws to collect more than $114 million in the first six months of the year.
No candidate for president has benefited from so much money so early in a campaign.
While the total is sure to widely eclipse the fundraising hauls of Bush’s 16 major competitors for the GOP nomination, the ambitious $100 million goal — and Bush’s success at reaching it on schedule — has yet to scare any challenger from the race.
The total announced Thursday includes $103 million raised by Right to Rise, a super PAC that will support Bush in the crowded GOP contest. The rest came into Bush’s formal campaign.
“More than the symbolism of surpassing $100 million, the totals demonstrate Bush’s success charting new territory,” said Bush donor Mark Jacobs, a former Texas energy executive who now lives in Iowa. “It’s that Right to Rise has raised more and been more successful than any political organization ever.”
The former governor of Florida is taking a unique approach to a presidential bid by delegating many operations to Right to Rise, which as a super PAC is free of the limits placed on how much money a traditional campaign can raise from individual donors.

‘One of the largest human experiments in history’ was conducted on the unsuspecting residents of San Francisco
San Francisco’s fog is famous, especially in the summer, when weather conditions combine to create the characteristic cooling blanket that sits over the Bay Area.
But one fact many may not know about San Francisco’s fog is that in 1950, the US military conducted a test to see whether it could be used to help spread a biological weapon in a “simulated germ warfare attack.” This was just the start of many such tests around the country that would go on in secret for years.
The test was a success, as Rebecca Kreston explains over at Discover Magazine, and also “one of the largest human experiments in history.” But as she writes, it was also “one of the largest offenses of the Nuremberg Code since its inception.” The code stipulates that “voluntary, informed consent” is required for research participants, and that experiments that might lead to death or disabling injury are unacceptable.
The unsuspecting residents of San Francisco certainly could not consent to the military’s germ warfare test, and there’s good evidence that it could have caused the death of at least one resident of the city, Edward Nevin, and hospitalized 10 others.
This is a crazy story, one that seems like it must be a conspiracy theory. An internet search will reveal plenty of misinformation and unbelievable conjecture about these experiments. But the core of this incredible tale is documented and true.

South Carolina’s losing battle to rewrite its racist history
By Eugene Robinson Opinion writer July 9 at 8:22 PM
For most of my life, a flag representing white supremacist violence against black people flew at the capitol of my native state. It is a very big deal that this emblem of hatred and oppression is finally coming down.
Gov. Nikki Haley (R) was expansive after the state legislature finished action early Thursday on a bill consigning the Confederate battle flag to the museum displays where it belongs: “It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of.” I have to entertain the notion that she may be right.
