    FROM THE MOTHER:

uncannyannieblogI REALLY wanted to leave these signs on the pram today. As a twin mum, you get asked a series of questions/hear a series of statements EVERYTIME you go out. I know most people are coming from a great place and are just curious however many can be quite intrusive and after a while it’s just plain exhausting. And since I was heading into the city, I knew the questions would be coming thick and fast… but I chickened out on the train and took them off!

Pastor puts a Subway restaurant inside his church

a Subway restaurant inside his church

    by Andre Hatchett

That’s exactly what happened at the True Bethel Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York.

The story was detailed on the popular television show, Undercover Boss. If you aren’t familiar with the show, business CEO’s from large corporations spend several days in disguise working alongside low level employees. This is supposed to give them a full glimpse of the operations they head from the ground up.

In this particular episode, Don Fertman, who is the Chief Development Officer for Subway’s, went undercover. He speaks with Reverend Darius Pridgen, the head pastor of the church, and they discussed how the idea of a Subway being in a church came about.

Revereand Prigen said, “The reason we actually put it in the church was because there weren’t a lot of opportunities in this neighborhood when I got here. We had a high murder rate, and a lot of people not working. So, a lot of people always talk about, ‘Just give people jobs.’ Well, that’s not the key, if they haven’t been trained. So we started collecting an offering. We called it a “franchise offering” – literally called it a “franchise offering.” But we’ve got to do more than build a business. We’ve got to train people. We try to push people into the next level of life.”

Dick Meyer: Mr. President, On Behalf Of An Ungrateful Nation, Thank You

I’ve never written a column like this. Readers rarely believe it, but I am not on any political team. Generosity toward the high and mighty isn’t among my few virtues. But this needs to be said: Americans are lucky to have Barack Obama as president and we should wake up and appreciate it while we can. President Obama will go down in history as an extraordinary president, probably a great one. He will have done this in era that doesn’t aggrandize leaders and presidents, but shrinks them. All presidents have had profound opposition, vicious enemies and colossal failures. A few were beloved and others deeply respected in their day, but none in the modern era and certainly not Obama.

One can hate Democrats, disagree with Obama on big issues, dislike his style or be disappointed the excitement of his election didn’t last. But his accomplishments, ambitious goals, dignity and honesty under tough circumstances demand admiration and appreciation. 1. The Iran deal: Time will reveal if the deal worked, not today’s talking/tweeting heads. What cannot be in dispute is this was a momentous initiative, a gutsy political risk, a diplomatic success and, potentially, a giant step in defusing a long-ticking time bomb. 2. Obamacare: In the midst of the worst economy since the Great Depression, Obama delivered one of the most important domestic programs since the New Deal. Only LBJ’s Great Society laws compare. Obamacare has survived two challenges in the Supreme Court and constant, kabuki-style congressional votes to repeal. It’s now off life support. Key goals are being met. It will evolve and improve. One day it will be taken for granted and people will say, “Keep the government out of my Obamacare.”

President Obama and his daughters arrived in the Big Apple on Friday for a rare father-daughter weekend
They walked into the Richard Rodgers theater on Saturday with the crowd around them on their feet
Excited audience members took their phones out while the smiling President gave a wave

The audience in the Broadway theater were on their feet in rapturous applause, but the show hadn’t even started.

They stood up to welcome President Obama and his two daughters as they entered the Richard Rodgers theater to watch the musical Hamilton – bringing the curtain down on their whistle-stop tour of New York.

The Commander-in-chief, a well known fan of theater, guided Malia, 17, and Sasha, 14, to their seats as the excited crowd took pictures on their cellphones.

The President sat in his seat while wearing reading glasses as his two daughters sat in the row in front of him with other guests and family.

He even smiled and waved to the crowd in a moment of thanks for them clapping for him. He then sat and watched the nearly three-hour hip hop based show before heading back to his waiting aircraft at JFK International Airport

His two girls enjoyed a rare trip alone with their father, having taken a number of vacations to China and Europe with First Lady Michelle.

Mitchell: DuSable Museum fight exposes generation gap

    WRITTEN BY MARY MITCHELL

    POSTED: 07/18/2015, 10:00AM

A fight brewing over the future of the DuSable Museum of African American History highlights a troubling gap.

The generation that took a fistful of dollars and the sweat of its brow to build black institutions is finding it difficult to hand over the reins to talented visionaries of the next generation.

This dilemma is at the heart of a divisive dispute over the future of DuSable.

Theaster Gates, 41, is an installation artist who likes to take discarded structures and turn them into cultural artifacts. Gates is best known for the “Dorchester Projects” — two dilapidated buildings that he turned into cultural institutions on the South Side.

But Gates has raised the ire of prominent grassroots and cultural activists with a proposal to tinker with the black history museum.

In a proposal recently submitted to the museum’s board of trustees, Gates said his goal is to “increase the ambition and inspire a major conceptual shift within one of the most significant culturally specific institutions in the nation.”

The document, leaked to activists, led to the formation of a group that calls itself the Concerned Committee for the Support of Independent Black Cultural Institutions.

“We vehemently disagree with this shift in direction from [museum co-founder] Dr. Margaret Burrough’s mission and vision for DuSable Museum. . . . This brazen attempt to deliver the DuSable Museum into University of Chicago management must be immediately halted,” the coalition said in a letter July 7.

Among the names listed on the coalition’s letterhead are authors and historians Lerone Bennett Jr. and Timuel Black, Ald. Willie Cochran (20th), Conrad Worrill, director of the Jacob Carruthers Center, and Jackie Taylor, founder of the Black Ensemble Theater.

No one can change my mind on this:

60% of whites (men, women, young, old) people will vote for the GOP in 2016

The issue remaining is where POC with all the restrictions place their votes and if they show up as they did in 2012 or 08. I am not under any illusion that white progressives are true allies, maybe 10% of them will show up.

America especially white america wants a white president that will put those people in their place. This is on both side of the electoral parties. I am convinced of that much after venturing and reading the comments. The crave the seen and no heard from POC politics. However, Obama has shifted the paradigm for all people (people just need to show to state and local elections).

Bernies cry of economics is for whites to retain the leverage they had in the past due to many inequalities enacted to keep people of color out. Now like kenny said, the economic realities are coming home and they want to save themselves again. President Obama addresses that below.

Black people are the base of the Democratic Party.

If you can’t answer questions that are of interest to us, you need to take your ass on home.

The Bernie-stans were in particular vicious on Twitter towards Elon James White (This Week in Blackness).
    Elon is no Black Panther.
    He’s not even a Black Panther-wannabe.
If you can’t handle the logical questions of Elon James White…
you need to sit down and STFU.

And, the entire, ‘ folks just need jobs’ approach by Bernie is tireseome.

How would a job have helped Tamir Rice?
How would a job have helped Trayvon Martin?

Sandra Bland was in Texas because she had just landed her DREAM JOB.

The PROBLEM, is the attack on Black people by the POLICE.

    And, it’s a valid problem.

    I’ve said several times….

That Pookey and Ray-Ray don’t believe in law enforcement should not bother you.

That my three-degreed self believes in law enforcement on the same level as Pookey and Ray-Ray IS the problem.

If it’s all about ‘just having a job’,

then take a look at this video from Mr. Bougie himself, Lawrence Otis Graham, on the dresscode and other rules that he has imposed on his children.

Between him and his wife, they have FOUR Harvard Degrees.

    He ends his video:

” I just want to keep them ALIVE.”

    https://youtu.be/EfeS-GYnuj0

Show me where a WHITE couple with FOUR Harvard degrees, has EVER expressed anything like this.

I believed that Trayvon was an 8.5 quake on the San Andreas fault for Black parents….I stand by that.

  22. Ametia says:

    And then there’s this TURD

    • Liza says:

I just received a survey questionnaire from the DNC without a single mention of police brutality or any problems within the criminal justice system.

I am convinced that the Democrats think they can ALWAYS get away with speaking to root causes of social problems, mainly poverty, sub-standard education, lack of jobs and opportunities, income inequality, and so forth. And, of course, there is very obvious truth in these general statements. Anyone can say these things without having to put up much of a defense, and that is exactly what they are going for.

But here’s their problem. A beautiful 28 year old black woman is moving to Texas for an employment opportunity. She is driving alone sixty miles northeast of Houston. She is not poor or uneducated or unemployed. In fact, she is young and healthy and her whole life is ahead of her, she is doing quite well. But some incident involving an improper lane change ends with her dying in police custody. And variations of this very same story keep repeating over and over. An innocent black life is taken, lies are told, and the perpetrators are never brought to justice.

If the Democrats still want to be the party of the people, or at least create that illusion for the purpose of winning in 2016, then they better learn how to talk about the relationship between white supremacy and out-of-control policing as well as all the other problems within the criminal justice system that disproportionately affect people who are not white.

Racial turmoil in Md.’s ‘Friendliest Town’ after black police chief is fired
By DeNeen L. Brown | July 18 at 8:48 PM

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. — The crowd gathered outside City Hall last week, demanding that their community’s first black police chief — fired amid allegations leveled against white officers of departmental racism — be given his job back.

In a place that bills itself as the “Friendliest Town on the Eastern Shore,” angry residents marched with posters that read “We Support Chief Kelvin Sewell” and jammed inside the quaint red-brick building to voice their outrage to the Pocomoke City Council.

Pocomoke City has been on edge since Sewell was fired by the council June 29. According to the former chief and his supporters, he was sacked for refusing to dismiss two black officers who described working in a hostile environment.

The officers alleged in complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that they faced racism that was overt and rampant — allegations the city denies. Among the incidents alleged: a food stamp superimposed with President Obama’s face that was left on a black detective’s desk and a text message that read, “What is ya body count nigga?”
