It just occurred to me that Pope Francis and First Grandma Robinson, are the same age: 78…

Watching the motorcade with Pope Francis is hilarious. All these big SUV’s, then here comes the little Fiat…LOL

Unbelievable how pundits eager to praise @Pontifex for warmth, accessibility, loving kids, while denying @Potus credit for same qualities

Watching the Pope, and besides being jet lagged, this whole screaming folks on the sidelines thingy must bemuse and tickle the hell out of him all at the same time – and obviously give him pause…He’s a genuinely humble and smart man..

Some of the cheering crowds and adulation from politicians does have that greasy quality to it – of the fickle, fair weather, mercenary ancient Romans sort…or the ‘churchious’ 2-faced characters to be found in mafia movies like the God Father..

Just 2+ short years ago he was Jorge Mario Bergoglio who eschewed the pomp and circumstance and frills and material excesses typically associated with his various church positions. Banned from attending late President Nestor Kirchner’s funeral as he was seen as an enemy of Kirchner’s and other regimes – for daring to demand more political dialogue between government and its oppressed citizens, asking for tolerance, and often criticizing exhibitionism among other things.

Kirchner’s widow, the current Argentinian president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, did not even immediately congratulate him when he was first announced as Pope… She has since become a Pope groupie – flying around to wherever he is, including showing up on his recent trip to Cuba – and only because of his immense popularity within and outside Argentina. (Having a raucous following always helps bring former enemies around! Especially the politicians among them who wish to continue to win elections and/or to remain relevant.)

Notice that the Pope’s smile has once again disappeared – A combination of Cardinal Dolan, Andrew Cuomo etc. will quickly do that. He did however allow the smile to return momentarily as he greeted Mayor de Blasio…

The Pope is sending greetings to Muslims. Prayers to them for the heartache and tragedy in Mecca.

Has the Pope changed outfits? Is that him in the green?

  7. Ametia & Rikyrah, you did an outstanding job covering the Pope.

Pope Francis gave an address to a joint session of Congress today. I hope to have an essay on the broader themes of his speech for tomorrow, but today I want to focus on one aspect which seems to have tarnished his halo with leftists who have pinned their hopes on him and are now disappointed, just as they did with President Obama.

    Here is the offending passage:

The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.
That’s it. That was his only glancing reference to abortion. And he didn’t even use the word abortion.

But look at what he said: human life must be protected at every stage of its development.

As I’ve written before, I was raised Catholic. And although I can’t in good conscience call myself a believer any longer, that upbringing undergirds who I am. I can no more dispense with it than I can dispense with all the skeins of life which have made me who I am.

I’ve always been a liberal. And as early as I can remember, I’ve always disagreed with the Church’s position on abortion and birth control. Many times, I’ve disagreed vehemently with the Church, wanting finally to cast aside that part of me.

But as I’ve grown older, I have, I hope, grown wiser. What used to be black and white in my youth has become a symphony of grays. I still disagree with the Church on abortion and birth control. But I can respect its stance, at least on abortion.

How can I do this? Because unlike many of the evangelical Religious Right, the Catholic position on life is a total one. Again, turn to Pope Francis’ words: life must be protected at every stage of development.

For those curious, the Pope has a masters degree in chemistry. He is, in fact, one of the 97% of scientists who believe in climate change.

  10. Thank you, God. America needed this visit from the Pope. Heal this land of the injustice, pain, suffering. Cleanse us all, Lord.

    Sunday School 101!

  14. Ametia says:

Pope: “Let us use the yardstick we use for others, use for US.”

Pope: Let’s us protect human life, until the stage of its development.

Pope: HELL NO to death penalty. (LOL he didn’t say that.) “Every life is worth saving.”

  15. Ametia says:

The Pope has been watching the tom foolery that has been American Politics.
Got it GOP & right wingers. Also too, you cowardly DEMOCRATS who have side-stepped, backstabbed this President.
