President Obama condemned the mass shooting at an Oregon college on Thursday, but added that “our thoughts and prayers are not enough” to stem this tide of violence. “There’s been another mass shooting in America,” Obama said at the White House. Obama said he has been to Roseburg, Ore., where the shooting took place, and “there are really good people there.” “Somehow this has become routine,” Obama said. “The reporting has become routine. My response here, from this podium, has become routine.” President Obama lamented the fact that he was making comments about yet another shooting – this time at a community college in Oregon – saying the process has become “routine” for him and new families who mourn the loss of loved ones.
“I hope and pray that I don’t have to come out again in my tenure as president to offer my condolences to families under these circumstances. But based on my experience as president, I can’t guarantee that,” the president said in the White House briefing room. The shooting, which left at least 20 people dead and injured, according to the governor’s office, took place Thursday morning at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The identity of the 20-year-old shooter has not been released. The president said that just as his remarks on shootings have become routine, so too have the reactions from politicians and opponents of stricter gun regulations.
“Somewhere will comment and say, ‘Obama politicized this issue.’ Well, this is something we should politicize. It is relevant to our common life together, to the body politic,” he said. Rather than shying away from the political dimension to mass shootings, the president leaned in to it, saying that Thursday’s events were direct products of political decisions – those made by lawmakers and by those who elect them. “We collectively are answerable to those families, who lose their loved ones because of our inaction,” he said. In a veiled reference to groups like the National Rifle Association which has opposed most of the president’s efforts to tighten gun purchasing laws, he urged firearms owners to reconsider their affiliation with the group. “I would particularly ask America’s gun owners, who are using those guns properly, safely, to hunt, for sport, or protecting their families, to think about whether your views are properly being represented by the organization that suggests it’s speaking for you,” he said.
The president has said the failure to pass more stringent gun safety laws is one of the greatest frustrations of his presidency thus far.
“If you ask me where has been the one area where I feel that I’ve been most frustrated and most stymied, it is the fact that the United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which, we do not have sufficient common-sense gun safety laws, even in the face of repeated mass killings,” he told the BBC in July.
President Obama, as he has done several times after mass shootings, spoke from the White House briefing room. He called for more common sense gun restrictions, but predicted that the statements from gun rights groups would were being written as he spoke. Someone, he said, would say that “Obama politicized this issue.” Oregon officials said a 20-year-old man killed 13 people and injured at least 20 more in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland.
President Obama has spoken in the wake of shooting tragedies on at least a dozen occasions, including the 2012 murders at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., and this past summer’s killings at African-American church in Charleston, S.C. The president has frequently called for legislation to try and stop gun violence, including enhanced background checks, an assault weapons ban, and improved mental health programs.

CASUALTIES
Bill Fugate, Oregon State Police spokesman, reports the following preliminary figures:

Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg has received nine patients, and three more were en route, a hospital spokesperson told CNN.
That’s in addition to at least three victims being transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, a spokeswoman told CNN.
CNN’s Deb Feyerick reports that triage is set up at campus, treating some victims at the scene.
Six helicopters or aircraft are currently deployed, says Life Flight Network representative Justin Dillingham. “We have moved additional aircraft into the Portland area should they be needed,” he said.

“At about 10:38 a.m., the 911 center received a report of a shooting at Umpqua Community College. Police units from multiple juristictions (sic) have responded.
Students and faculty members are being bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds and can be picked up there. We have no further information at this time.”
INVESTIGATION
From Deborah Feyerick: Investigators have identified a man, believed to be in his late 20s, whom they believe to be the suspect in the shootings at Umpqua Community College. In particular, the investigators are examining social media posting made by the alleged shooter, a source with knowledge of the investigation tells CNN.
The night before the attack, the source said, the shooter appears to have had a conversation about his intentions with others online.
It appears the shooting began in one building and then the gunman moved into the science building, the source said. The dead and wounded were found in at least two classrooms.
Some ATF agents are on the scene already. Also, ATF canine teams are en route to search for explosives, firearms casings and ammunition, an ATF spokesman told CNN’s Pamela Brown.
FBI is en route.

UI Health validates cure for sickle cell in adults

Physicians at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System have cured 12 adult patients of sickle cell disease using a unique procedure for stem cell transplantation from healthy, tissue-matched siblings.
The transplants were the first to be performed outside of the National Institutes of Health campus in Maryland, where the procedure was developed. Physicians there have treated 30 patients, with an 87 percent success rate. The results of the phase I/II clinical trial at UI Health, in which 92 percent of treated patients were cured, are published online in the journal Biology of Blood & Marrow Transplantation.
The new technique eliminates the need for chemotherapy to prepare the patient to receive the transplanted cells and offers the prospect of cure for tens of thousands of adults suffering from sickle cell disease.

This indeed wonderful news. Decades ago, when I was working med surg unit, I had 2 patients with Sickle Cell. They were in so much pain, couldn’t breathe, They had to have a continuous heplock in to receive meds, and receive oxygen around teh clock.

The Unlikely Race-Blind Mastermind Who’s Teeing Up the Roberts Court Just Scored Again

The Supreme Court did not rule on any blockbuster cases this week, but it did accept an appeal in Evenwel v. Abbott, a case expected to become a blockbuster of its own when the court begins its new term in October.
Behind the case is Edward Blum. He is not himself a lawyer, or even a party in the case, but he’s made a name for himself getting the Supreme Court to hear landmark disputes — all of them with huge constitutional implications. Blum heads the Project on Fair Representation, a little nonprofit that funds litigation aimed at abolishing all distinctions and preferences based on race.
Here’s proof of his influence: In 2013 alone, the court decided two cases he helped engineer back-to-back: Fisher v. University of Texas and Shelby County v. Holder. One almost dealt a blow to affirmative action nationwide; the other effectively crippled the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Roberts court’s appetite for these cases is proven, and Blum is the man bringing them.
Since Fisher didn’t exactly come out the way Blum would’ve wanted — the justices kicked the case back to an appellate court for a second look, and he lost again there — he decided to bring it back to the high court for a do-over. And he just may get his wish: Yesterday, the justices considered whether Blum’s case against the admissions policy at the University of Texas is worth reviewing again.
If the savvy Blum gets his way — veteran Supreme Court reporter Tony Mauro calls him a “mastermind” — he will effectively have two cases before the Supreme Court, ready for argument for when the court returns from its summer recess.
This is a remarkable success rate, though there’s nothing remarkable about how these cases come about. All of them seem to follow the same mold: Identify a legal principle, usually a settled equal-protection standard or statute from the ’60s and ’70s; recruit plaintiffs who are presumably “harmed” by the principle or its application to a specific policy; and then argue that it’s illegal to keep the principle, its application, or the policy in the books.

The Evenwel case is subtler yet no less fascinating. In it, Blum’s lawyers argue that Texas is in violation of the “one person, one vote” principle the Supreme Court enunciated in Reynolds v. Sims, a case from the civil-rights era interpreting the 14th Amendment. The argument is rather simple: The Constitution forbids the Texas Legislature from drawing legislative districts based on total population; instead, districts must be proportionately drawn on the basis of the total number of voters. To anchor the argument, Blum’s lawyers seize on a line from another Supreme Court case of the same era, one holding that “when members of an elected body are chosen from separate districts, each district must be established on a basis that will insure, as far as is practicable, that equal numbers of voters can vote for proportionally equal numbers of officials.”
On its face, Evenwel sounds like a slam-dunk case that only seeks fair representation for voters everywhere. Except the political reality in Texas and elsewhere is far different. Do elected officials only represent voters, or their constituents as a whole? What about children, noncitizens, people with mental illnesses, or those disenfranchised owing to felony convictions? Do they matter for map-drawing purposes? And what about “taxation without representation”? Does that figure into the analysis?
Though Evenwel doesn’t extend to congressional districts, where the Fourteenth Amendment explicitly controls, a ruling favoring Blum could have big implications in urban areas like New York or California, where a large percentage of Latinos and otherwise non-voting groups reside. And as the Washington Post’s Amber Phillips notes, such a ruling could “flip many district sizes on their head” — shifting voting power to suburban and rural areas, where voters are older, whiter, and tend to vote Republican.

High-quality early childhood education has the potential to improve long-term life outcomes for all children. In order to learn, however, students actually have to be in the classroom. At the same time that the United States is expanding access to high-quality early learning opportunities, alarming statistics suggest that these environments can serve as a point of entry to the school-to-prison pipeline, which most acutely affects African American children. For example, African American children represent 18 percent of all preschoolers but make up 42 percent of those suspended and nearly half of those suspended multiple times. Given the profound consequences that suspension, expulsion, and other zero-tolerance policies can have on very young children, it is time to change the national approach to preschool discipline. The growing movement to resist the criminalization of African Americans underscores the need to prevent schools from serving as a point of entry to the criminal justice system. The Center for American Progress and the National Black Child Development Institute will release a new report with recommendations on how to bring an end to preschool suspensions and expulsions.

Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson has, at times, seemed a little preoccupied with Nazis. When the GOP candidate, for example, equated modern American life with Nazi Germany, it was evidence of a far-right candidate who was a few steps shy of the mainstream.
But Carson isn’t changing his focus. Yesterday, the retired neurosurgeon was in New Hampshire, once again raising the prospect of a Nazi-like reign over the United States. “If you go back and look at the history of the world, tyranny and despotism and how it starts, it has a lot to do with control of thought and control of speech,” Carson said.
Asked whom he sees as a modern-day equivalent of Hitler, the Republican candidate replied, “I’m not going to go into that. I think the example is pretty clear.”
In reality, isn’t not “clear” at all what in the world this guy is talking about. In fact, Carson’s comments sound like those of someone on the furthest fringes of public life, not a candidate for major national office.
But Carson nevertheless continues to impress the far-right, to the point that Roll Call reports that one congressional Republican sees him as a possible Speaker of the House.
Rep. Ron DeSantis, the Florida Republican who is one of nine founding members of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, said at a campaign event Sunday he’d be open to supporting an outsider for speaker when the House meets to vote for a new leader Oct. 8.
“I would go bold, you don’t have to be a member of Congress to be the speaker of the House. I would support someone like Dr. Carson or somebody like that, I think that would be good,” DeSantis said, referring to Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon and presidential candidate who has seen a boost in polls in recent weeks.
A spokesperson for DeSantis added that the Florida congressman was “just throwing out ideas,” and has “not yet made any commitments in regards to the upcoming leadership elections.”

Tulsa sheriff indicted, resigns in wake of shooting by volunteer deputy

(CNN) Tulsa County, Oklahoma – Sheriff Stanley Glanz resigned on Wednesday after a grand jury indicted him on a pair of misdemeanor charges, one of them accusing him of withholding details related to a volunteer deputy who fatally shot Eric Harris.
The indictment claims that after Harris was shot to death on April 2 — by Bates, a then 73-year-old reserve deputy who said he mistakenly shot Harris after mistakenly grabbing his firearm instead of a stun gun — Glanz “denied lawful requests for the release of internal investigations into his office’s Reserve Deputy program.”
Glanz knew of a 2009 report of that description but told employees to “hold on to it” in violation of the law, according to the indictment.

The West Family Expands – Vanessa Williams & Keiynan Lonsdale Join Cast of ‘The Flash’

Vanessa Williams has been cast as Iris West’s mother on CW’s “The Flash.”
The character is played by Candice Patton, whose father, and thus, Vanessa Williams’ would-be husband on the show, is played by Jesse L. Martin (aka Joe West).
Williams will make her debut on the hit superhero drama series during its upcoming second season which kicks off next week Tuesday, Oct 6 at 8pm
Fans of the series will know that the whereabouts of Iris’ mother haven’t really been addressed on the show yet, although it’s only been 1 season. In fact, she’s barely referenced, if at all, as I recall. I think I just assumed that she wasn’t alive.

Considering Lena Horne’s Only Dramatic Role – ‘Death Of A Gunfighter’

It would be fair to state that Lena Horne, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 92, and being the legend that she was, would herself say that her film career was something of a major disappointment.
She appeared in only about 18 films in almost 60 years, from her first, the 1935 short film “Cab Calloway’s Jitterbug Party,” where she appeared unbilled as a dancer, to her last in 1994, where she appeared as herself to introduce some MGM film musical sequences in “That’s Entertainment III.”
But she was mainly relegated to appearing in brief musical numbers in movies, most of them for MGM where she was under contract, in which she usually just sang a song or two and then left, never to be seen again.
And most of the time, her appearances were separated and totally unrelated to the rest of the film, so that, in the South, her scenes could be easily cut out, so as to not offend southern audiences and their delicate sensibilities, who would have been disturbed to see a beautiful black woman on the screen.
Horne, herself, talking about her limited screen time in movies, once remarked that, in most of her films, she felt that she “was like a butterfly pinned to a pillar’.

Going back to the earliest of days of cinema, there have been numerous adaptations of the Robin Hood story in both film and on television. The heroic outlaw of English folklore who “robs from the rich and gives to the poor” alongside his band of Merry Men continues to be widely depicted in literature, TV and the cinema.
The latest is a Lionsgate project titled “Robin Hood: Origins,” a planned feature film that will be directed by Otto Bathurst (“Peaky Blinders”) and star Welsh actor Taron Egerton (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”).
Deadline reports that a near-international search is underway for Egerton’s leading lady, with 4 actresses said to be on Lionsgate’s shortlist, including British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is joined by Irish actress Eve Hewson, Dutch actress Gaite Jansen, and Australian Lucy Fry.

Lance Gross is one new face this season of Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” who will be introduced as Abbie’s (Nicole Beharie’s) FBI boss Daniel Reynolds. According to IMDB, he’ll be appearing in all 18 episodes this season.
A character that will be a series regular, Gross’ Reynolds will be “reunited” with Abbie when he’s assigned to Sleepy Hollow.
Other Season 3 castings include Nikki Reed (“Twilight”) as Betsy Ross, and Shannyn Sossamon (“Wayward Pines”) as a mysterious newcomer named Pandora.
The supernatural drama returns to Fox on a new night to start, tomorrow, Thursday, October 1 at 9/8c, competing directly with “Scandal.” That’s going to be an intriguing ratings battle. I’m looking forward to seeing the numbers.

Don Cornelius’ ‘Soul Train’ Story Is Heading to Broadway as a Musical. ‘CSI’ Creator Will Write

Long in the works, in 2012, it was announced that there was renewed interest in exploiting the “Soul Train” franchise – likely thanks in some part, at the time, to Don Cornelius’ death (February 1, 2012).
The news then was that Soul Train Holdings was working with WME to find ways to exploit and grow the brand, which would include a film, a stage musical AND a TV show.
“Certainly we want to proceed in a way that will highlight the contribution of Don to the creation of the brand and its subsequent impact on American culture,” said Kenard Gibbs, CEO of Soul Train Holdings.
However, there were some rights issues that they had to deal with, notably the music used in each episode of the series. But they were confident that it wouldn’t be a problem.

It’s been about a day since the political world was confronted with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) unexpected candor: the Republican’s taxpayer-financed Benghazi committee, he acknowledged, is all about the GOP’s “strategy to fight and win” against Hillary Clinton. It’s not, in other words, about investigating an attack that left four Americans dead.
The response to the likely House Speaker’s confession was swift and severe. Consider, for example, what Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), a member of the Select Committee on Benghazi, told Rachel on the show last night.
“[T]he committee is a joke and I think Democrats ought to call it what it is and say we`re not going to participate in this anymore.
“And that’s my initial reaction – I`ll listen to my leadership on this and perhaps they will again have greater wisdom – but it just has been an embarrassment.”
It’s no idle threat. In light of Kevin McCarthy, the likely next Speaker of the House, admitting what Democrats have long feared, there’s a very real possibility that Dems on the panel may decide to simply walk away from a process that’s been corrupted. If the committee is now nothing more than a taxpayer-funded election tool, some Democrats no longer see the point in participating in a farce.

Bernie Has a Million Donors

This is anecdotal, but you know how Facebook suggests people who you might want to be friends with? For some reason, over the last month or so the algorithm has been serving up nearly 100% people who have few friends in common with me but who love Bernie Sanders so much that they use him in their avatar. And I spent some time yesterday looking at these folks and their bios are a lot different from the old suggestions I was getting. In the past, most suggested friends were in three groups: academics, journalists/editors, or employed progressive organizers. But most of these Bernie folks are just regular people who work as food servers or have a job at Lowe’s or maybe do some charity work with the homeless. There’s a lot of young people still in their first job. There are stay-at-home moms and people who are self-publishing short stories.
In any case, there are a lot of them and they’ve managed to get connected to each other and want to bring me into The Borg.
Nothing wrong with that, but I thought about it when I saw that Bernie has just reached the million donor plateau. That’s right, a million people have donated money to the Bernie Sanders campaign, which is more than any other candidate and more than Obama had attracted at the same point in his campaign.
How many of these folks are infrequent voters? How many would be disengaged from the process if not for Bernie being in the race?
Those are the big questions. Because something could be afoot
