Former Chicago Public Schools chief to plead guilty to bribery
    scheme

Barbara Byrd-Bennett had been the chief executive of Chicago Public Schools less than two months when the man who helped persuade the Emanuel administration to give her the job sent an email allegedly laying out the heart of a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme.

In the December 2012 email, Gary Solomon, the owner of SUPES Academy and a consultant with long ties to the Emanuel administration, assured Byrd-Bennett that trust accounts had been set up in the names of two of her young relatives, each funded with tens of thousands of dollars, federal prosecutors alleged. The cash would be hers once she stepped down from her public post and rejoined his firm.

“It is our assumption that the distribution will serve as a signing bonus upon your return to SUPES,” Solomon wrote, according to prosecutors. “If you only join for the day, you will be the highest paid person on the planet for that day.”

The secret bonus was just one part of a massive scheme outlined in a criminal indictment Thursday charging Byrd-Bennett, 66, with steering no-bid contracts worth more than $23 million to SUPES in return for promises of up to $2.3 million in kickbacks, other perks and a job.

Solomon, 47, and co-owner Thomas Vranas, 34, also were criminally charged in the 23-count indictment, as was SUPES, their Wilmette-based business, and Synesi Associates, another education consulting company the two ran.

At a news conference outlining the indictment Thursday afternoon, U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon revealed that Byrd-Bennett is cooperating with investigators and plans to plead guilty to the charges and testify if necessary.

Fardon referred to the motive in the case as flat-out “greed,” calling Byrd-Bennett “a public official who compromised her integrity … by looking to line her own pockets.

Kevin McCarthy Enters Rehab After Admitting Struggles with Nouns, Verbs
    By Andy Borowitz

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has entered rehab to deal with his “struggles with nouns and verbs,” an aide to the congressman has confirmed.

According to the aide, McCarthy abruptly dropped out of the race for Speaker of the House because his difficulties with those two parts of speech had “spiralled out of control.”

“There was an intervention, in which people who care about the congressman sat him down and showed him video of himself talking,” the aide said. “He agreed that he needed help, although it took people awhile to realize that’s what he was trying to say.”

A source familiar with McCarthy’s struggles, however, cast doubt on that official story. “It’s not just nouns and verbs,” the source said. “It’s adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. Kevin’s going to be in rehab for awhile.”

In a brief statement to reporters, McCarthy offered a blunt assessment of his situation. “It bad,” he said. “But soon it be less badder.”

    Racial Profiling Via Nextdoor.com

White Oakland residents are increasingly using the popular social networking site to report “suspicious activity” about their Black neighbors — and families of color fear the consequences could be fatal.

    By Sam Levin @SamTLevin

The strange glances are starting to become more frequent. James Fisher, a fourteen-year-old freshman at Oakland Charter High School, has noticed that as he gets older, more people on the street eye him with suspicious or fearful stares. “Some of them just look at me, and then they’ll look away,” he said. “Or sometimes, I go into stores, and they look at me like they think I’m going to do something bad.”

James is a mixed-race, dark-skinned Black teenager who is soft-spoken and looks about three years older than his actual age. On a recent afternoon last month, I chatted with him and Emma, his thirteen-year-old sister, at their house in the Upper Dimond neighborhood in the Oakland hills. The two siblings told me about their first weeks of high school and how they have enjoyed the freedom at times to walk around Oakland’s Chinatown district without their parents.

But they never walk around their own neighborhood alone.

The tree-lined residential street of large single-family homes where the Fishers live more closely resembles suburbia than a densely populated city. Positioned at the top of a steep hill near Dimond Canyon Park, their house feels worlds away from the busy urban bustle of MacArthur Boulevard and the Fruitvale district just to the southwest. On the surface, their block looks like an ideal place to raise kids — safe, family-friendly, and quiet. Although their individual street is very diverse — with about ten Black or mixed-race kids now living nearby — white residents are by far the largest racial group in the surrounding area. And it’s in this neighborhood, perhaps more so than any other part of Oakland, that James feels most like a target for the uncomfortable glances that are becoming increasingly common in his life.

    Drug tests for Medicare recipients?
    10/08/15 11:20 AM—UPDATED 10/08/15 11:49 AM
    By Steve Benen
In recent years, a growing number of Republican officials, especially at the state level, have pushed drug-testing programs for Americans on “welfare.” The idea is predicated on an unfortunate assumption: if you’re struggling and need to rely on a safety net, the government should suspect you of drug addiction and check your bodily fluids.

The drug-testing programs have, in general, been a costly and pointless disaster. But in Kentucky, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Matt Bevin has expressed support for expanding drug testing to include senior citizens on Medicare.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported yesterday on the latest debate between Bevin, who has never held public office, and state Attorney General Jack Conway (D).
…Conway asked Bevin about his statement from April that recipients of Medicaid and Medicare should be drug-tested.

In April, Bevin said during a Louisville Tea Party forum that he supports random drug testing for recipients of both programs. “I firmly believe we frankly should drug test people that are on Medicaid and Medicare,” Bevin said at the time. “We just should.”

During Tuesday night’s debate, Bevin didn’t back away from that call, saying “there should be expectation of you as somebody who is a recipient, or, as it’s often referred to in this state, on the draw.”
After the debate, Bevin said he was referring to Medicaid beneficiaries, suggesting the GOP candidate is more comfortable going after low-income families than seniors. I’ll concede that I did not see the debate, but the Lexington Herald-Leader’s article added that Conway “interrupted Bevin to make clear that he was asking about Medicare and not Medicaid.”

    Bevin responded, “Understood.”

“Apologies! No offence meant. Personally find both men charming,” Murdoch tweeted Thursday morning, following a massive backlash to the original tweet.

“Ben and Candy Carson terrific. What about a real black President who can properly address the racial divide? And much else,” the 84-year-old tycoon tweeted a night earlier.

      LOL..

The unprecedented, baseless and particularly vicious and dehumanizing attacks on FLOTUS from white racists – male and female – Attacks that dissect her very being, her looks and even spitefully question her womanhood, her marriage, her husband’s love for her and her biological birth of her 2 beautiful daughters – and the constant disregard, questioning of her, and discounting her and her important place as wife and equal partner to her husband the President, and the tendency to resent her and pretend she doesn’t exist by some of her husband’s supporters, all stem from the very same place…

It’s a visceral reaction and preemptive response to her undeniable blackness…Without uttering a word, she stands as a constant reminder of that which so many with amnesia and guilty others who just want ‘to move on’ and are in fact inconvenienced and annoyed by what they see as a ‘constant rehashing of the past’ would rather forget…They want us to ‘move on’ they say – and even without saying anything, her blackness and her unwillingness to play along or go along with the okey dokey, to be bland and adulterated – or to go overboard with suck-up gestures that apologize for her blackness or absolve others of their racism, makes them extremely uncomfortable… It doesn’t help that she isn’t grateful and never speaks about or gleefully claims as some would – a white heritage begotten of a slave owner who raped her great, great, great grandma..

They think, if we overlook, diminish, discredit and dismiss her, or preemptively attack her, hysterically whip up and make up all manner of silly, slanderous and vicious stuff to put her down and blame her for, and create cover, cause and justification to validate their hate for her – or if they deny her her rightful, respectable, prime and important place next to him and as wife, equal partner, next of kin and First Lady to her husband the President; pretend she doesn’t exactly count, matter or exist in the grand scheme of things, that her husband just happened into the White House entirely without any effort on her part or input from her, they can preemptively trump her, knock her down a peg or two, permanently put and keep her in her place in the slave quarters, even destroy and permanently erase her — and they don’t ever have to be found at fault or guilty of their new round of racist hate – or the sins of their forebears..

FLOTUS’ unabashed blackness unnerves and unsettles them…

She stands in stark brilliance as a very powerful symbol and reminder of America’s greatest sin…And even as she goes about living her life happily and normally, she unlike so many, does not go out of her way to play down or reapportion blame/responsibility – nor does she go out of her way to try to make anyone feel better about that original sin… She allows them twist themselves into pretzels trying to find new and interesting ways to make their racist discomfort with her, all her fault…

I’m often amused even as I observe some of the President’s ‘greatest supporters’ some of whom by the way think political support means automatic ownership of the man, and the disrespectful appropriation of this black woman’s husband in some of the most inappropriate of ways — scuttle away whenever FLOTUS is mentioned or she appears…Although some have been slyly making more of an effort these days to hide their discomfort and resentment of her…others, much like the racists on the other side, remain a bit more brazen in their negative attitude towards her…Where the right-wing/Libertarian racists that typically also hate her husband, albeit not as much as they often hate her, think they both don’t belong in the White House, the rather stealth, conscious/unconscious racists on ‘our side’ who do support her husband, resent her and don’t think she’s deserving…that her blackness disqualifies her as wife of the now world-renowned President – For some of them FLOTUS’ husband is their Mandingo, better still, begotten of a white mother – and as usual in their telling of it, the triumphantly white side they credit entirely for giving us the first black President they so proudly boast support of and as yet evidence again, and ironic indeed – that they aren’t in the least bit racist..

See they say, I voted for and I support the first black President – I don’t like and can’t relate to his too black wife – why is she even around anyway, and by the way, he’s only great thanks to his white side..

Now if only FLOTUS would quit being all right-minded, honorable and sensible and proud and stuff, and start actively speaking on and claiming and playing up her whiteness – and that wonderfully grand and automatically elevating white rapist slaveowner in her lineage – perhaps the racists might just start ‘relating’ to her – and just might stop hating and resenting her and her blackness so much…

Biden Bid Could Lead to Battle for Minorities
By JONATHAN MARTIN- OCT. 7, 2015

WASHINGTON — Facing a spirited challenge from Senator Bernie Sanders in Iowa and New Hampshire, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign has reminded her supporters that she will be better positioned to defeat Mr. Sanders once the primary fight moves to more racially diverse states, where polls show she has a large advantage over him among blacks and Hispanics.

But a late entry by Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. into the Democratic contest could complicate Mrs. Clinton’s strategy, particularly if he were able to portray himself to minority voters as President Obama’s rightful heir.

There may be no more consequential element to a campaign by Mr. Biden. If he were able to loosen Mrs. Clinton’s grip on nonwhite voters by the time votes are cast in South Carolina, Nevada and the Southern states holding contests on Super Tuesday, it could set off a prolonged, bruising and expensive Democratic primary season.

Kasich’s clumsiness continues to be a problem
    10/08/15 08:02 AM
    By Steve Benen
A few weeks ago, Ohio Gov. John Kasich took his Republican presidential campaign to Los Angeles, where he tried to praise Latino voters. It didn’t go well – the GOP governor clumsily conflated Latinos, service-industry workers, and his hotel room’s maid.

This week, as the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported, Kasich had a similar stumble, this time in Virginia.
A University of Richmond student says Republican presidential candidate and Ohio Gov. John Kasich demeaned her by joking about Taylor Swift tickets during a question-and-answer session at the school Monday.

Kayla Solsbak, 18, wrote an account of her experience for student news outlet The Collegian, saying Kasich responded “I’m sorry, I don’t have any Taylor Swift concert tickets” when Solsbak raised her hand with a question.
American Bridge 21st Century, naturally, captured the moment on video. Kasich is seen dramatically waving his hand, telling the young woman, “I don’t have any tickets for, you know, for Taylor Swift or anything or, you know, or Linkin Pa… Go ahead. Yes. I know. You’re just so excited. Yes.”

According to the report from the college newspaper, the Republican presidential candidate told another young woman at the event, “I’m sure you get invited to all of the parties.”

Kayla Solsbak, not surprisingly, didn’t appreciate Kasich’s attempt at humor: “What continues to strike me is the hypocrisy of his condescension. He touted his ambitious energy as an 18-year-old man, but as soon as I, an 18-year-old woman, exhibited ambition. I became the target of his joke.”

McCarthy’s odd demand: ‘Stop playing politics’
    10/08/15 08:35 AM
    By Steve Benen
Today is likely to be a pretty big day for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). He and his Republican colleagues will meet behind closed doors this afternoon, at which point the GOP leader expects to be nominated for Speaker of the House.

The process, however, is proving to be unexpectedly difficult. The right-wing House Freedom Caucus announced yesterday that its members are throwing their support behind Rep. Dan Webster (R-Fla.), one of McCarthy’s lesser-known rivals. Even if that proves inconsequential, McCarthy will still have to wait until Oct. 29 – three weeks from today – before the House officially elects the new Speaker, giving his rivals and his critics 21 days to derail his promotion.

McCarthy’s principal trouble is his accidental candor: he recently admitted that his party’s Benghazi committee is a taxpayer-funded political operation intended to undermine Hillary Clinton. Everyone already knew that, but GOP officials aren’t supposed to admit this truth out loud. McCarthy told an intra-party secret and he’s been in trouble ever since.

The California Republican is still scrambling to clean up his mess, conceding yesterday that he “could have been more clear in my description of what was going forward.” But National Journal noted that’s not all McCarthy said.
“Let’s be very clear: Benghazi is not political,” McCarthy said. “It was created for one purpose and one purpose only: to find the truth on behalf of the families of the four dead Americans. Period.”

“The integrity of [Committee Chairman Rep.] Trey Gowdy, the integrity of the work that has been done has never come into question, and it never should be. Stop playing politics,” he added.”
Let’s take these one at a time.

First, McCarthy probably doesn’t believe his own rhetoric about the GOP’s Benghazi committee being non-political. In fact, we know the opposite is true because McCarthy told us so last week.
