Holiday candle 4Jingle Bells is one of the best-known and commonly sung winter songs in the world. It was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh” in the autumn of 1857. Even though it is commonly thought of as a Christmas song, it was actually written and sung for Thanksgiving.[1] It was mistakenly branded as a Christmas song because being extremely popular at Thanksgiving, it was sung again around Christmas.

Social media led the way for Black small businesses to advertise their products, but we’re certain a large group of wine connoisseurs aren’t aware of Andre Hueston Mack and his Mouton Noir Wines brand. To throw in another Black history fact: As one of the top black winemakers in the country, Andre Hueston Mack owns Mouton Noir Wines, which is sold in over 40 states and 12 countries; selling over 30K cases of wine a year.

    Mack founded Mouton Noir in 2007 with no money and no investors, leveraging only his resources from his days as an award-winning sommelier for Michelin star chef/restaurateur Thomas Keller at both French Laundry and Per Se. Always one to think outside of the box, Mack created the first culinary coloring book in 2014. And in 2016, he will be launching another wine startup unrelated to Mouton Noir.

    ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY’S INSULTING BLACK PANTHER COVER SHOWS THERE’S STILL A LONG WAY TO GO

    You know Black Panther. I know Black Panther. But at this point, the average person out there in the worlddoesn’t know Black Panther, even following actorChadwick Boseman’s brief live-action debut in the role in the recently released “Captain America: Civil War” trailer, which as of publication of this article has been viewed more than 40 million times on YouTube alone.

    So landing on the cover of “Entertainment Weekly” — which even in the waning days of print media reported a 1.8 million circulation in 2013, along with a robust online presence — is a big deal for the hero. This week’s EW cover, released online today, features Boseman, in costume between Chris Evans as Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man (they’re both unmasked, Boseman is not) promoting a cover story on “Civil War,” which will introduce Black Panther to the Marvel Cinematic Universe before he goes on to star in a solo film set for 2018; the first Marvel film of the post-“Iron Man” era to star a Black superhero.

    It all sounds pretty good until you take a closer look at the cover — Black Panther has a “Meow” dialogue prompt above his head (Cap and Iron Man remain diaogue-free). This is the copy EW went with when introducing the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics to the world at large: “The biggest Marvel movie yet introduces Black Panther. He’s tall, powerful — and has claws that a Real Housewife would envy.”

    Police: 14 people killed, 14 others injured in mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif.

    As many as three people opened fire at a center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday, killing at least 14 people and injuring 14 others in what the city’s police chief described as an act of domestic terrorism.

    The active shooting scene erupted at the Inland Regional Center, which serves people with developmental disabilities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

    The person or people who opened fire fled the area, possibly in a dark SUV, and authorities have no word on their location, identities or motives, Jarrod Burguan, chief of the San Bernardino Police Department, said at a news conference.

    A man from Whiteall, New York was indicted in federal court this week after an FBI anti-terrorism task forced discovered that he was buying fully automatic machine guns to allegedly “execute” minorities.

    According to the Albany Times Union, a federal complaint accused 18-year-old Shane Robert Smith of buying weapons and ammunition from an undercover agent on Aug 6. The firearms included two weapons capable of firing as fully automatic machine guns: a Colt M16 model A2 and a Military Armament Corporation “MAC 10” machine gun.

    Smith also acquired a Beretta model 92FS handgun and 120 rounds of armor-piercing “green-tip” ammunition.

    The teen first showed up on investigators’ radar in May when he began buying machine guns online. Federal documents indicate that FBI investigators posed as gun sellers on a Russian social media website after Smith posted a request for automatic weapons.

    The Post Star reported that Smith told undercover investigators that he needed the weapons to “execute kikes, coons and get money for the crew.”

    Smith explained that he was building “a hit squad” and would need “a sidearm or heavy weapon” in case he got cornered.

    As Rachel noted on the show last night, Jeb Bush raised a few eyebrows at a campaign event in Iowa yesterday, speculating about a possible running mate. “Should I be elected president,” the Republican said, “I would have my vice president, I think she will be a great partner.” Smiling a bit, Bush joked, “Did I say that out loud?”

    I suspect this is part of a clumsy strategy to get people thinking about him as an electable general-election candidate, who’ll be only too pleased to go up against Hillary Clinton with a Republican woman on his ticket.

    Will this have the intended effect? It’s hard to say for sure, though it’s hard to blame the guy for trying – nothing else is working for Team Jeb. NBC News had an amazing report yesterday documenting the presidential candidates’ spending so far, and Bush and his allies have easily outspent every other campaign operation in both parties, but to no avail. The Florida Republican remains stuck in the mid-single digits in state and national polling.

    Of course, there’s another way to look at this: Jeb may be hovering around 5% in the polls, but imagine where he’d be if his campaign and its allies hadn’t already spent roughly $29 million on his behalf.

    The Wall Street Journal reports today that Bush backers expected the Paris attacks to refocus the race, giving Jeb a possible boost as the public looked for mature, steady leadership. But with fresh evidence that Paris hasn’t improved Bush’s standing at all, there’s “a fresh round of hand-wringing and second-guessing” about the candidate’s future.

    In 2012 an off duty Chicago police officer named Dante Servin stopped his car in front of front of a group of unarmed black people, pulled out his handgun and fired multiple times into the crowd, hitting one man in the hand and killing Rekia Boyd, 22.

    State Prosecutor Anita Alvarez would have no doubt preferred to do nothing; her cozy relationship with law enforcement was legendary even by prosecutor standards. However the egregious details of this case forced her to do something. So a year and a half later she charged Servin with involuntary manslaughter. This is almost literally the least she could do, short of issuing Servin a parking ticket, and her decision put the trial Judge Dennis J. Porter in a bind. You can hardly call it involuntary when someone points a semi-automatic handgun at a group of people and pulls the trigger over and over again. Porter did not have the option to decide what kind of crime Dante Servin committed. Either he committed involuntary manslaughter or he didn’t. Since the killing was pretty clearly not involuntary, Porter let him go. It is hard to argue with people who feel that Alvarez used her prosecutorial discretion to keep Dante Servin free.

    Citizens United and New Media are on a Collision Course
    New media is challenging the basic business model of advertisements as a way to pay for television programming. First came remote controls and options like Tivo, which allowed viewers to skip ads. Now, in the age of digital streaming, the number of households that are “cord cutters” (no cable or satellite television service) has increased 60% in the last 5 years.

    This evolution comes just as the Supreme Court’s decision on Citizens United allowed for unlimited contributions to campaign super pacs – whose main role has been to pay for expensive television advertising. The conflation of those two developments might help explain why Jeb Bush’s super pac has spent over $15 million on television ads (far more than any other campaign), and yet their candidate has dropped to fifth place in the polls, leading long-time Bush family friend John Sununu to say, “I have no feeling for the electorate anymore. It’s not responding the way it used to.”

    We essentially saw the same thing in the 2012 election when Karl Rove’s super pacs had a 1% return on their investment in television ads, while a video recorded by a waiter at a Romney event was likely a game-changer. At some point super pacs are going to have to ask themselves what they should be spending all those millions of dollars on if television advertising doesn’t move the needle on poll numbers, while free media becomes a determining factor.

    It’s also interesting to note that a candidate like Donald Trump has spent very little money so far and recently swore off having any super pacs. The reason he’s been able to do that is because he gets a tremendous amount of free media for saying outrageous things. That poses it’s own kind of danger as long as the press prioritizes the sensational over the substantive. But in the end, it is not significantly different from all the free media the Obama campaign got with the video of Romney’s “47%” remarks in 2012.

    The one Republican candidate whose super pacs are experimenting more aggressively with the use of new media is Ted Cruz. Kellyanne Conway, who runs one of the Cruz super pacs, recently said that their goal was to be “more surgical, spending on digital, cable, direct mail, radio, in addition to TV.”

    Brian Fisher, who runs an organization called “Online for Life” (which has developed apps and social media to connect with women seeking to end a pregnancy), has formed a company called Red Metrics LLC that will serve as the data and digital operation for Cruz’s four Keep the Promise super pacs. One of the visible results of that collaboration is the Facebook page: Reigniting the Promise, which already has over 350,000 followers.

    To date, the Cruz super pacs have spent almost nothing on television ads, and yet their candidate is inching up in the polls and his campaign has raised more “hard money” than anyone in the Republican field except Ben Carson. Whether or not Cruz has a chance at actually being the nominee remains to be seen. But when you compare the results of super pac spending on new media vs paid television advertising, it is obvious that there is a new game in town.

    FBI: Background checks for gun sales peak on Black Friday

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI processed a record number of firearms background checks on Black Friday, the agency said Tuesday.

    The agency processed a record 185,345 background checks — roughly two per second — the same day that three people were killed and nine others wounded in an attack at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado.

    The agency received about 5 percent fewer background check requests on Black Friday in 2014, the FBI said.

    FBI background checks processed by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System are conducted for gun purchases from federally licensed deals and for permits to carry guns. A background check does not mean a gun was purchased but manufacturers rely on the background check statistics as a measurement of the industry’s health.

    Ted Cruz says Republicans have “an abysmal record” when it comes to picking Supreme Court justices, and it is something the Texas senator promises to rectify if he’s elected president.

    Cruz, who argued cases before the Supreme Court as the solicitor general of his state and has taught law school classes on the art of presenting cases to the high court, told Bloomberg Politics in an exclusive interview in Iowa on Monday that his party has a knack for picking eventual heretics who side with liberals on divisive issues.

    As examples, he cited Chief Justice John Roberts, an appointee of President George W. Bush, who rejected a challenge to President Barack Obama’s health care law in 2012, and Justice Anthony Kennedy, a Ronald Reagan appointee, who voted in 2015 to make same-sex marriage a constitutional right. Both cases were decided 5 to 4.

    The event, organized by the National Bar Association, the country’s largest organization of African-American lawyers and judges, emphasized the role lawyers played in the Montgomery bus boycott, which disrupted this city’s public transportation for more than a year and led to a Supreme Court decision that struck down Alabama laws requiring segregated buses.

    The two-day event was one of only a handful of times since Mrs. Clinton announced her candidacy in April that she addressed organizations that were unaffiliated with her campaign and had not endorsed her. She was joined by a lineup of lawyers, elected officials and ministers who have been central in civil rights struggles, past and present.

    For much of the political world, it was simply assumed that Republican voters’ love affair with Donald Trump was a summer fling that would inevitably fade away. GOP insiders were annoyed with the New York developer’s rise, but they also had every confidence that Trump would never seriously compete for their party’s nomination.

    That confidence is beginning to evaporate. The New York Times reported overnight that Republicans’ “irritation is giving way to panic” as Trump’s nomination begins to appear “plausible.”
    Many leading Republican officials, strategists and donors now say they fear that Mr. Trump’s nomination would lead to an electoral wipeout, a sweeping defeat that could undo some of the gains Republicans have made in recent congressional, state and local elections. But in a party that lacks a true leader or anything in the way of consensus – and with the combative Mr. Trump certain to scorch anyone who takes him on – a fierce dispute has arisen about what can be done to stop his candidacy and whether anyone should even try.

    Some of the highest-ranking Republicans in Congress and some of the party’s wealthiest and most generous donors have balked at trying to take down Mr. Trump because they fear a public feud with the insult-spewing media figure. Others warn that doing so might backfire at a time of soaring anger toward political insiders.

    That has led to a standoff of sorts: Almost everyone in the party’s upper echelons agrees something must be done, and almost no one is willing to do it.
    I believe political scientists refer to this as a collective-action problem.

    The entire Times article is well worth your time – it’s filled with some amazing quotes from party insiders and officials who share on-the-record predictions about electoral catastrophes – and it captures the genuine fear that pervades much of the GOP as December gets underway. There were plenty of similar pieces over the summer and early fall, but at that point, the idea of a Trump nomination was largely academic. Most discounted the possibility that it could actually happen.

    It’s about as hard for a 20-something worker to find a job today as it was in 1986. The economy is growing at a slightly slower pace, but not by much. And yet young workers today are significantly more pessimistic about the possibility of success in America than their counterparts were in 1986, according to a new Fusion 2016 Issues poll reported in conjunction with the Washington Post — a shift that appears to reflect lingering damage from the Great Recession and more than a decade of wage stagnation for typical workers.

    That rise in pessimism among millennials is concentrated among white people. It is most pronounced among whites who did not earn a college degree.

    Anthony Anderson Inks Multi-Year Deal to Continue as Host of the NAACP Image Awards

    I suppose, unlike the Oscars and the Emmys, the “who will host” question that happens annually, won’t be one that the NAACP Image Awards will have to worry about – at least for the next 2 years.

    The NAACP and TV One announced today that Anthony Anderson has signed a multi-year deal to continue as host for the 47th and 48th NAACP Image Awards. The 47th NAACP Image Awards will be nationally telecast live on TV One on Friday, February 5, 2016 as a two-hour special from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The live telecast will also include a one-hour live pre-show from the star-studded red carpet.

    “I look forward to the NAACP Image Awards each year! The NAACP Image Awards always delivers an epic evening with the best of the best across film, TV, music, and literature,” said Anderson. “It is a privilege and honor to be asked back to host for the next two years – there is no doubt that this year’s show is going to be magnificent. I may even have a few surprises up my sleeves!”

    On the first Saturday morning in August, I stepped out of my car in a suburban Indiana parking lot and watched three middle-aged white men aim squinty-eyed suspicion at me from two spaces away. As a Wisconsin native, I’m used to squinty-eyed white Midwestern suspicion. But since we stood several hundred feet from a lot of guns and I figured the guys were probably armed, my feet froze. I had to drag myself to the entrance of the Kokomo Gun Show, where a brown-haired stocky white guy in his twenties talked to his friends while resting his elbow on a rifle butt as if leaning on a gun was the most natural posture imaginable.
    I passed hundreds of parked cars on my way to the front door. This was a couple months after Dylann Roof was accused of killing nine people in a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, and a week after John Russell Hauser was accused of killing two and wounding nine in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. Gun purchases in America tend to spike after mass shootings and terrorist attacks, because such events heat up the gun control debate.
    On this Black Friday — less than a month after the terrorist mass shooting in Paris — gun sales were projected to spike again. There were 50 gun shows listed across the country, and the FBI predicted that gun sellers would run a record 190,000 background checks in a 24-hour period — not that prospective buyers need to undergo a background check to buy guns from private vendors at the Kokomo Gun Show or those in dozens of other states including Florida, Texas, and Ohio.

    It’s Deja Vu All Over Again
    If you are feeling deja vu all over again, there is a reason. The last time we saw this picture, Republicans and the media had joined hands to get everyone in a panic about Ebola. There were calls for travel bans and quarantines that had no basis whatsoever in any rational plan to deal with the spread of the disease.

    Meanwhile, President Obama and his team went about calmly taking steps that actually addressed the problem.

    But, of course, there was no “after-action” review of who was right and who was wrong. Once the scare-tactics had played their course, we went on to the next crisis-of-the-day.

    The Paris attacks happened a little more than two weeks ago. We were immediately subjected to panicked responses suggesting that we not allow any Syrian refugees into this country.

    President Obama and his team have calmly described the rigorous two-year process that refugees must go through to come here.

    But beyond that, many have pointed out that if a terrorist really wanted to get into the United States, the very last avenue they would chose would be to go through the refugee program. Given that all of the people responsible for the attacks in Paris were Belgian or French nationals, they could have easily entered the United States through the visa waiver program.

    And so, President Obama and his team just announced some changes to the program that allows travelers from 38 countries to come to the U.S. without a visa.
    The White House announced several steps, including attempting better tracking of past travel, fines for airlines that don’t verify passport data, assisting other countries on the screening of refugees and with border security.

    It is also promising reports to the president in two months from the State Department and the FBI about how to include better fingerprinting and photographing, as well as an evaluation of the state of intelligence coordination between the U.S. and its allies.
    Paul Waldman wrote a wonderful tongue-in-cheek column yesterday about how “manipulating the public’s emotions has never been Obama’s strong suit.” Funny thing about that guy…he seems to think that calmly solving problems and protecting the American people is what we elected him to do. Imagine that!

    Right on top of yesterday’s study by the American Cancer Society linking the Affordable Care Act to a substantial improvement in early detection of cervical cancer, the Huffington Post’s Jonathan Cohn reports that the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality has released a different study claiming that 87,000 lives have been saved since 2010 from a reduction in medical errors, and guess what’s getting the credit?
