If Hillary is elected, I think we can expect unconditional support for Israel and probably another attack on the Palestinians in Gaza where at least a couple of thousand of them are killed.

Judge throws out case against police officer charged in takedown of Indian grandfather
    Jan 13, 2016

There will not be a third trial.

Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala just threw out the case against Madison police officer Eric Parker, who faced up to 10 years in prison for excessive force in the sidewalk stop of an Indian citizen.

Judge Haikala late Wednesday filed a 92-page opinion, ending with: “The Government has had two full and fair chances to obtain a conviction; it will not have another.”

A team of three federal prosecutors had twice tried Parker last year for the takedown of 57-year-old Sureshbahi Patel on the morning of Feb. 6, 2015. Both trials ended with a deadlocked jury.
    […]
Key excerpts from the judge’s analysis and opinion:

Regarding the check subject call: “The record demonstrates that a reasonable officer in Officer Parker’s position would suspect that the individual who the known caller described was involved in a burglary.”

Regarding Patel, a permanent resident, not having identification: “…Mr. Patel, a resident alien, violated 8 U.S.C. § 1304(e) when he left his son’s house without identification. That is a misdemeanor crime for which Officer Parker could have arrested Mr. Patel.”

Signs of resistance: “The slow motion clips from the Government’s enhanced dashcam video supply objective evidence of resistance. The clips show that immediately before Officer Parker took Mr. Patel to the ground, Mr. Patel took a step to the side with his left foot and turned to face Officer Parker.”

On not speaking English: “Trial testimony indicates that Mr. Patel had the opportunity to become familiar with simple English commands like ‘stop’ and ‘come’ because Mr. Patel had visited his son in Alabama twice before Mr. Patel moved to the United States, the more recent visit lasting eight months.”

THIS is resistance? And not knowing simple commands in English is a legitimate reason for a cop to beat down a frail old man and paralyze him?

Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala should not be a judge, IMO.

    • Liza says:

As you have said, Rikyrah, this is a criminal enterprise. And I pray to God that the perpetrators do not get away with this.

Ultimately this shit proves why Matt Damon’s views are so dangerous to non white folks.

Like do you realize how much of a major undertaking making a fucking film is? And they give OUR creatives LESS to do it with?

Ted Cruz Didn’t Disclose Loan From Goldman Sachs for His First Senate Campaign
    JAN. 13, 2016

As Ted Cruz tells it, the story of how he financed his upstart campaign for the United States Senate four years ago is an endearing example of loyalty and shared sacrifice between a married couple.

“Sweetheart, I’d like us to liquidate our entire net worth, liquid net worth, and put it into the campaign,” he says he told his wife, Heidi, who readily agreed.

But the couple’s decision to pump more than $1 million into Mr. Cruz’s successful Tea Party-darling Senate bid in Texas was made easier by a large loan from Goldman Sachs, where Mrs. Cruz works. That loan was not disclosed in campaign finance reports.Continue reading the main story Related Coverage

Those reports show that in the critical weeks before the May 2012 Republican primary, Mr. Cruz — currently a leading contender for his party’s presidential nomination — put “personal funds” totaling $960,000 into his Senate campaign. Two months later, shortly before a scheduled runoff election, he added more, bringing the total to $1.2 million — “which is all we had saved,” as Mr. Cruz described it in an interview with The New York Times several years ago.

A review of personal financial disclosures that Mr. Cruz filed later with the Senate does not find a liquidation of assets that would have accounted for all the money he spent on his campaign. What it does show, however, is that in the first half of 2012, Ted and Heidi Cruz obtained the low-interest loan from Goldman Sachs, as well as another one from Citibank. The loans totaled as much as $750,000 and eventually increased to a maximum of $1 million before being paid down later that year. There is no explanation of their purpose.

EXACTLY HOW BLACK WAS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S FINAL STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS?

    Damon Young, 1/13/16

Last night, President Barack Obama began the farewell tour of his presidency with his final State of the Union address. It’s already been established that he’s shrouded in a cloak of no fucks; his fuck-drained cape flapping in the wind as he breezes past for one final lap. And, by virtue of being the first — and probably the last for a while — Black president, everything he does at this point is demonstratively and unambiguously Black by default. The only question is the degree of Blackness.

Which brings us back to the State of the Union address. We know it was Black, but exactly how Black was it? On the Blackness scale from one (Rachel Dolezal) to 10 (Marcus Garvey), where did it rate? Let’s see!

It started late: The first Black president starting his last State of the Union on CPT is good for 3.5 Black points.

When he walked in and greeted everyone, I couldn’t help but think of the Key and Peele code switch meet and greet skit: Although President Obama didn’t actually do it, the mere possibility of him doing it — and how tickled that possibility made me — is good for 2.5 Black points.

As Sanders’ support grows, Dems face an unexpected 2016 scenario
    01/13/16 11:20 AM
    By Steve Benen
Iowa Democrats will hold their presidential caucuses in 19 days, and it wasn’t long ago that Hillary Clinton appeared well positioned to win with relative ease.

That’s no longer the case. A Quinnipiac poll was released yesterday that found Bernie Sanders leading Clinton in the Hawkeye State, 49% to 44%. Public Policy Polling released results yesterday showing Clinton ahead, 46% to 40%, though the six-point margin is much tighter than her 18-point lead in a PPP poll in December. (A Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll will be released tomorrow.)

In New Hampshire, meanwhile, most of the recent surveys show Sanders, competing in a state that neighbors his own, well positioned to win the first Democratic primary.

All of a sudden, it’s dawning on much of the political world that the Vermont independent may win both of the first two nominating contests.

In the modern era, how many non-incumbent Democrats have won Iowa and New Hampshire in the same cycle? Just two: Al Gore and John Kerry. Both went on to win the party’s nomination.

The question no longer seems ridiculous: if Bernie Sanders wins the first two states, should he be considered the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination?

The answer is, probably not, though it’s a lot trickier than it seemed a few months ago. Slate’s Josh Voorhees had a good piece on this the other day.
Even if Hillary staggers out of New Hampshire with her second loss in as many contests, she’ll still have the same massive advantages she enjoys today: the campaign and super PAC cash, the ground game, the endorsements, the pledged superdelegates, and the general support of a party establishment that won’t soon forget that her challenger is not technically even a part of the Democratic Party. An unexpected loss in Iowa and a less surprising one in New Hampshire wouldn’t change that.

She’d also have a chance to get back on her feet – and fast. Consider what comes next: Nevada (Feb. 20) and South Carolina (Feb. 27), two significantly more diverse states than lily-white Iowa and lily-whiter New Hampshire.

Alan Rickman, British Film Icon, Dies at 69
    MOVIES | By Joe Otterson on January 14, 2016 @ 5:03 am

“Harry Potter” and “Die Hard” star suffered from cancer, family says
Alan Rickman, a British film and theater veteran, died on Thursday. He was 69.
Rickman’s family confirmed the news in a statement. It read, “The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends,” per the BBC.
Born in 1946, Rickman went to college to study graphic design, but decided after several years in that profession to pursue acting. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and after graduation found work in various theater companies throughout the UK.
His biggest stage role came in 1985 when he landed the male lead in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. When the production moved to Broadway in 1987, Rickman was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance.
However, when the play was adapted into the 1988 film “Dangerous Liaisons,” Rickman was not asked to reprise his role, losing out to John Malkovich.
Rickman’s big break in front of American audiences did come in 1988, however, when he played the villainous German thief Hans Gruber opposite Bruce Willis‘ John McClane in the action classic “Die Hard.”
