      Transcript
JOHN RAMSEY: FIRST OF ALL, ON BEHALF OF MY FELLOW LOUISVILLE ENDS, THE HEARTFELT PRAYERS. FOR LONN ALI, A VERY SPECIAL PRAYER. WE KNOW THAT MOHAMMED TA WAS — THAT THE THING WAS BLESSED WITH MANY GIFTS, BUT NONE — THAT MUHAMMAD WAS BLESSED WITH MA GIFTS. I’VE GOT TO TELL YOU, WHE I WAS IN THE PROCESSION AND SAW THE PEOPLE AND ALL THE WARMTH AND LOVE A RESPECT THAT WAS SHOWN FOR MUHAMMAD, MY HEART SWELLED I KNOW HE WAS WATCHING FROM ABOVE AND KNOW HE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. SURPRISED.

I THINK MUHAMMAD WOULD SAY, OF ALL-TIME. I’M FEELING GOOD. MAN. I TELL YOU WHAT, HOW CAN WE LOSE [APPLAUSE] FEELING SO GOOD, I THINK I WILL MAKE A COME BACK AND CHANGE MY NAME BACK TO WALNUT THAT’S HOW I FEEL. [APPLAUSE] >> F ME, I ALWAYS FELT CONNECTED TO MUHAMMA, EVEN MAYBE IT WAS THE FACT THAT I WAS A LOUISVILLE BOY. LOVE THE LOUISVILLE CARDINALS, [APPLAUSE] BUT AS OUR RELATIONSHIP EVOLVED, I FOUND A LOT OF PEOPLE FELT THIS PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH MUHAMMAD, AND THAT’S PART OF THE ALLEY MAGIC — ALL THE MAGIC. — ALI MAGIC.

IT WAS THE ATHLETE I WAS ATTRACTED TO. THAT KIND OF SIZE, SPEED, AGILITY, GRACE NOT ONL MADE HIM A HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD THRE TIMES, BUT IT MADE HIM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SPORTSMAN OF THE CENTURY. CERTAINLY IT MADE HIM A BUT I WOULD ARGUE THAT THE COMBINATION OF COMPASSION, KINDNESS, LOVE, AND THE ABILITY TO LIFT US UP MADE HIM A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME PERSON. [APPLAUSE] THERE ARE MANY STORIES ABOUT MUHAMM, BUT THERE ARE COUPLE ABOUT.

I REMEMBER BACK IN 2000, I MADE A TRIP TO THE SUMMER OLYMPICS WI MUHAMMAD, AND ONE DAY HE DECIDED WE WOULD GO SEE A BOXING MATCH, AND I REMEMBER WE WERE RINGSIDE AMERICA WINS, 15,000 PEOPLE ARE CHANTING USA COMING USA! — USA, USA! I WAS FILLED WITH PATRIOTIC PRIDE. THE BOXER CAME DOWN FROM THE RING, TOOK THE OBLIGATORY PICTURE WITH MUHAMMAD. HUNDREDS OF PHOTOGRAPHERS FROM PICTURES.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CHEERING FOR FIGHTER. AND MUHAMMAD LEANED DOWN TO ME, WHISPERED IN MY E, I SEE THE LOSER. I SAID, EXCUSE ME? I WANT TO SEE THE LOSER. OFFICIAL AND LOSER. ROOM? WE GO THERE, THERE IS NOT TENS OF THOUSANDS PEOPLE. JUST A K IN THE CORNER ON HIS NECK. HE’ GOT A BLOODY MOUTH UNDER HIS EYE. THIS HAS TO BE T LOWEST POINT OF HIS ATHLETIC CAREER AT THE VERY LEAST. BUT LIKE HE LET DOWN HIS COUNT COUNTRY.

THE VIBE IN THAT ROOM WAS LITERALLY THE LOWEST OF LOW. BUT WHEN MUHAMMAD WALKS IN, THIS GET RECOGNIZES HIM INSTANTLY, AND IN BROKEN ENGLISH SHE SAYS, MUHAMMAD ALI! MOHAMMAD START DANCING, AND HE STARTS THROWING OUT JAZZ, AND THIS KID STARTS TALKING AND SMILING. COMMON THING GRABS HIM IN A BEAR MUHAMMAD GRABS HIM IN A BEAR HUG A SAYS, YOU ARE A CHAMPION, DON’T GIVE UP. I REMEMBER I WARMED MY HEART HOW HE TOOK THIS KID FROM HERE [APPLAUSE] AND I REMEMBER, I GOT IN THE CAR AN SAID, MUHAMMAD, I TRIED TO BE A NICE GUY, BUT I WAS CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT. I DID NOT GIVE THAT LOSING FIGHTER A SECOND THOUGHT. GREATEST. HE SAID, TELL ME SOMETHING I [LAUGHTER] TO ME, HE IS THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF A HUMAN I HAVE EVER SEEN. GREAT HUMAN BEING I HAVE EVER SEEN.POSSESSES. THAT WAS MUHAMMAD ALI. BUT DON’T FORGET ABOUT THIS. MUHAMMAD WAS THE COOLEST CAT IN THE ROOM.

HE WAS GOOD-LOOKING, HE HAD CHAR, HE HAD CHARISMA. WHAT SWAGGER WAS. I REMEMB ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO, HE WENT IN TOWN TO VISIT HIS MOTHER, AND HE WANTE TO GO TO OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE. BIG MUHAMMAD FAN. AT THAT TIME, THERE WAS A ALL THESE GUYS HAVE THEIR NUMBERS ON THEIR SHIRTS. THESE GUYS LINED UP FOR AN AUTOGRAPH AND I SAID, MUHAMMAD, THE BAD GUY. HE’S LIKE, NO, I’LL SIGN BETWEEN BITES. CAN TELL HE’S A BIG FAN. HE WAS SCARED TO DEATH. HE SAID, I S THE STANCE YOU MADE IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. VIETNAM WAR. I’VE GOT TO TELL YOU, YOU ARE MY HERO. YOU ARE MY HERO.

HAMED SAID TO TH GUY, — MUHAMMAD SAID THAT T GUY, YOU ARE THE REAL HERO, SAVING BABIES, PUTTING YOUR LIFE ON THE YOU ARE THE REAL HERO. QUICKLY. HE SAID, MAN, BUT YOU FOUGHT THE BE. PATTERSON. YOU FOUGHT BIG GEORGE FOREMAN. YOU FOUGHT SMOKING JOE FRAZIER. MU SAID, YEAH, BUT JOE WASN’T [APPLAUSE] A GOOD LINE. THAT DOWN. ABOUT SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS AND KISSING BABIES. NEEDED FOOD IN A THIRD WORLD WOULD TRAVEL WITH A CHECK. IF THERE WAS A CONFLICT AND HE MUHAMMAD WILL TRAVEL.

THERE WERE HOSTAGES TO BE ACTION. ON OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES, AND I THINK IT IS RIGHT HERE IN YOUR PROGRAM, MUHAMMA SAID, SERVICE FOR YOUR ROOM HERE ON EARTH. I JUST WANT T SAY, CHAMP, YOUR RANT IS PAID IN FULL. — FULL. [APPLAUSE] IN FACT, I THINK HE PAID IT FORWARD, BECAUSE HE HAS TAUGHT US TO LOVE, RATHER THAN TO HATE. LOOK FOR COMMONALITIES, RATHER THAN DIFFERENCES. FOR ALL OF US. AS WE ALL KNOW NOW, THE FIGHT IS OVER, BUT I AM HERE TO TELL YOU, UNANIMOUS. BECAUSE OF MUHAMMA ALI, WE ALL WIN, THE WORLD WINS. THANK YOU SO MUCH, MUHAMMAD.

IT IS TIME FOR A MAN OF PEACE TO REST IN PEACE. THANK YOU MUHAMMAD.

  3. Hey Chicas! One of my Twitter pals writes poetry. She’s very good. For your pleasure.

    Ali Answers His Final Bell

    http://mypoeticside.com/show-poem-58389

A giant among men has finally been laid to rest

Father time remains undefeated, but Ali is still the best

He planned out his funeral. Wanted all his fans to attend

Friends and enemies alike. Best time for fences to mend

Thousands came to see Ali off. Couldn’t believe that he was felled

Fought the good fight on earth, but Heaven will answer the next bell

He’ll be buried where the legend started. Hometown Louisville

Dignitaries flew in from everywhere. A great testament to his will

“The Greatest” was not always loved as we’re told by history

His brave stance helped end a bad war we chose to fight overseas

Not everyone appreciated his lip. Didn’t always care for his talk

But no one questioned his steely resolve, or the way he never balked

He had some tough fights and Liston seemed an impossible match

We learned that impossible is nothing. Everything is within our grasp

Gave us a great moment in Atlanta. Lit the huge Olympic cauldron

A signature moment of the ’96 games. That memory hasn’t fallen

Next time you see a young kid sweating. Putting work into the gym

Tell him about “The Greatest.” And how we won’t see another like him

    • Ali Belongs To The Ages

Ali started with nothing and made his name in the sweet science
Louisville not the best place for a Black man not looking for bias

Got into boxing as a good way to channel his youthful energy
Given his background he could’ve easily contracted lethargy

A great opportunity to fight awaited him in the city of Rome
He won a gold medal, but an unpleasant surprise waited at home

Walked into a diner for a meal and the greeting made him quiver
They refused to serve Cassius so he tossed his medal in the river

Turned professional with dreams of becoming heavyweight champ
Had a beast named Sonny Liston waiting at the end of the ramp

No one gave Clay a chance against the big hulking monster
But fear never entered his mind. Wasn’t anywhere on his roster

The young challenger agitated and prodded Liston to distraction
Sonny paid him little mind which seemed to give Clay great satisfaction

The young Olympian talked mucho trash and was a peerless promoter
Spit dope rhymes in the pre-rap era and was quite the TV joker

On fight night Clay frustrated Liston and a new champion was unfurled
He talked about how pretty he was and how he “Shook up the world!”

A few years later he changed his name and refused to go to Vietnam
The government stripped his boxing titles and didn’t seem to give a damn

Ali fought the decision and won while his fans cried real tears
By that time he was past his prime and lost valuable boxing years

A huge fight was arranged where Muhammad would fight Joe Frazier
Many thought Ali still had one left in him and would shock and amaze us

But it was not to be even though the fight has huge social import
Poor Ali had been away much too long and could not hold the fort

Later fought for the title in Zaire. His loyal fans chanted “Ali Bumaye”
Showed us his “Rope-A-Dope” strategy. Prayers were answered on that day

Found out later that Ali was not right and he had fought much too long
Parkinson’s made his hands shake and we knew something was really wrong

He made a surprised appearance and lit the Olympic cauldron to much acclaim
This was a breakthrough. We rarely saw the disabled on this kind of public display

Now here we are at the end and Ali won’t take any more public stages
He’ll be entering a new ring in the sky. For now he belongs to the ages.
